With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

I can't really imagine any teenage superhero willingly wearing that, a costume like that doesn't look comfortable to wear. Does Argent have some kind of enhanced resilience because then it might still make a bit of sense.

The actual reason is that DC was creating a new Teen Titans team and Argent was selected to be "the sexy one, like Starfire". She does not have enhanced endurance, other than in the sense that everybody in comic book land can take a few hits more than they realistically probably could.

"Adrianna Tomaz, yes. Her and the goddess Isis, whose power she's channelling. She's increased food availability, shade, ended soil erosion and annual flooding, and generally made a broad swath of the continent a much nicer place to live."

I'm not sure that arbitrarily mucking around with the ecological balance of a continent like that will be without consequences, but I guess few people are sorry to see the desert go.

"Was there an..? External trigger..?"

"Yeah!" She nods. "The Anti-Life! Didn't you get told this stuff?"

Interesting. So she didn't have her canon origin story; the anti-life kicked off her powers early. Meaning there's still aliens in her future. Probably.

Miss Monetti stares at her. "Ah..?"

"Miss Monetti, meet Kara the Course Hazard. She'll be assisting me."

A man without a head just showed up on the scene, and Kara is who she's staring at?! (Well perhaps she hasn't properly registered Ian yet, Kara certainly does attract attention.)

Anyway, new-Kara certainly does have a lot of time on her hands. Well I mean, she's basically a NEET. Not in Education, Training, or Employment. Becoming a teacher course hazard is at least making herself useful in some structured way, rather than flying around aimlessly looking for super work to do.

I'm imagining that Kara got an OMAC-operator handler to suggest missions to her, and it lasted about a day before Mister Atom declared the experiment canceled.

Eyes somewhat recovered, she walks over to the railings and looks out towards the north. "This is the middle of Africa?"

"In the north-south sense, just about."

"I thought this was all… Desert."
Fun fact, this is actually really really bad as the desert provides a number of necessary environmental functions and majorly effects the weather across northern Africa and Europe.

I'm not sure that arbitrarily mucking around with the ecological balance of a continent like that will be without consequences, but I guess few people are sorry to see the desert go.
It would functionally kill the Amazon rainforest by removing the natural fertilization process that keeps it going and cause massive droughts across northern Africa and Europe.

Fun fact, this is actually really really bad as the desert provides a number of necessary environmental functions and majorly effects the weather across northern Africa and Europe.

Yeah, it's not like there is an actual goddess there that can manipulate the environment and fix any such issues.

Oh, wait.

It would functionally kill the Amazon rainforest by removing the natural fertilization process that keeps it going and cause massive droughts across northern Africa and Europe.

Yeah, it's not like there is a super powerful Dryad there that can fix that.

Oh, wait.

Yeah, it's not like there is an actual goddess there that can manipulate the environment and fix any such issues.

Oh, wait.
Actually she can't, she doesn't have that sort of power anymore.

Hell, in Zoat's take of things gods with hundreds of millions of followers don't have that level of power.

Also, that would involve crossing over into the Olympians control, which would get her wiped out.

Yeah, it's not like there is a super powerful Dryad there that can fix that.

Oh, wait.
There actually isn't, Dryad's work within natural processes, not outside of them.

Actually she can't, she doesn't have that sort of power anymore

Except we've seen her do some impressive things with her power, so doing that wouldn't be out of the question.

If you've already forgotten, she managed to terraform an entire desert, so further manipulation of the environment isn't out of the question.

Hell, in Zoat's take of things gods with hundreds of millions of followers don't have that level of power

Except they do, and most of the divinities showed don't have that many followers.

But we know the Khandaqi gods are being revived, and I'm betting that after Adom protected his whole country, and several other countries from the Anti-Life, the worship in his gods has grown further.

Also, that would involve crossing over into the Olympians control, which would get her wiped out.

You do remember that the various pagan gods may be forming a coalition in order to better expand their faiths?

So Heph may be fine with Isis crossing over into their territory, provided she shares the worship.

There actually isn't, Dryad's work within natural processes, not outside of them.
Provide evidence that that's the case in this story.

And that particular Dryad is not an ordinary Dryad anymore.

You know it's Vaermina right? They're winding you up by being deliberately wrong.

Except we've seen her do some impressive things with her power, so doing that wouldn't be out of the question.

If you've already forgotten, she managed to terraform an entire desert, so further manipulation of the environment isn't out of the question.
No, that's not how it works, if you want to claim she can do a thing you need to show her doing it.

Except they do, and most of the divinities showed don't have that many followers.

But we know the Khandaqi gods are being revived, and I'm betting that after Adom protected his whole country, and several other countries from the Anti-Life, the worship in his gods has grown further.
The Hindu Gods had 1.2 billion followers and couldn't do stuff like that.

You do remember that the various pagan gods may be forming a coalition in order to better expand their faiths?

So Heph may be fine with Isis crossing over into their territory, provided she shares the worship.
Heph is barely holding onto power, he isn't going to drive the rest of the Pantheon back to Zeus by bowing his head to Isis.

Provide evidence that that's the case in this story.

And that particular Dryad is not an ordinary Dryad anymore.
If you believe she worked differently then the standard DC Dryad before connecting to the Green you're free to prove it.

Also, I'd point out you actually countered your own attempted point there, because The Green specifically can't sustain nature on it's own power.

No, that's not how it works, if you want to claim she can do a thing you need to show her doing it.

The latest chapter shows the changed environment that she created using her powers.

We've also seen her basically singlehandedly fight off Manheim's monstrosities during the Anti-Life.

The Hindu Gods had 1.2 billion followers and couldn't do stuff like that

We haven't seen the Hindu gods yet, so we don't know what they do in this story.

Heph is barely holding onto power

Since when?

None of the gods have shown themselves to be rebellious to his reign or actions.

Heck, according to a conversation Paul had with Kratos, several of them may not even care to go back to the pantheon because they're more used to working alone now than they are as a group, so Heph can just recruit gods from other pantheons to fill the necessary places.

He already did that when he recruited Tyr, a Norse god, as the new Olympian God of War.

he isn't going to drive the rest of the Pantheon back to Zeus by bowing his head to Isis.

See what I wrote above.

If you believe she worked differently then the standard DC Dryad before connecting to the Green you're free to prove it

There isn't really an explanation for how Dryad work in standard DC comics.

Heck, there's barely a consistent explanation for how magic works in standard DC comics.

And Eutanthe is not a standard Dryad anymore.

Between the power up from Swamp Thing, the Tree of Knowledge branch, and her taking over the Green after the Anti-Life seemingly destroyed the Parliament of Leaves, she can't really be called an ordinary Dryad anymore.

Also, I'd point out you actually countered your own attempted point there, because The Green specifically can't sustain nature on it's own power

Provide proof that it's the case in this story.

"No. But Kara's actually pretty nice-"

Kara beams, clasping her hands together next to her head. "Awww..!"

"-and if you can't cope with being around her, then… You may wish to reconsider your vocation."

Ian clambers off the construct and drops to the deck. "Oof. Hey-."

Miss Monetti stares, pointing at him with her right forefinger. "WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS HEAD?!"

Ian turns to face her, arms wide. "Car crash."

"Huh?"

"The first two cars were okay, just a few broken bones. And then another car drove off the edge of the overpass. And then the shotgun shells in the trunk went off." He lowers his arms. "Why's your skin that color?"

Kara gasps, hands going to her hips and her eyes glaring! "Ian! You can't just ask someone why their skin's that color!"

"What?" / "What?"

"Kara, Kara." I wave my right hand to get her attention. "While I see why you said that, your concern really only applies to typically occurring skin tones."

"But silver's really pretty!"

"Thank you..?"

"Be that as it may, silver is not a skin colour many humans have. Ian was expressing curiosity about her physical uniqueness, not insulting her entire ethnic group."

"I still think he could have said it better!"

"Maybe. But she did shout 'what happened to your head' just before that."

"That was a medical question!"

"Ah, it's fine..?" Ian shakes his.. torso. "It's not like I don't know I don't have a head. My boss is just a head. Ah. Look, I'm sorry if you're sensitive about your skin-."

"No no no, it's-. It's fine, I-." Miss Monetti shakes her head as she snaps out of it. "I should have realised that metahumans can look stranger than… Me."

Kara beams. "And now everyone's friends!"

Ian glances up at Kara for a moment, perhaps concerned that she's about to pick him up again. Then he returns his attention to Miss Monetti. "Actually, before the accident I used to look pretty normal."

"Oh. So..? What-? Do you-? Ah."

Ian tilts his torso back and spits out a gout of fire. Miss Monetti relaxes slightly.

Ian nods. "I was a metahuman before this… And then Doctor Otto von Schadel saved my life after the crash by… Moving some things around."

"Oh. Ah. How is it?"

"A bit weird to start with. But I got used to it. And the Doc did stuff like this to a lot of people. Back in Aberrance I don't really stand out."

"'Aberr-? You're an Un-Man!"

"Yeah!" He smiles. "You heard of us?"

"I saw that guy explode because of you guys!"

"Ah. Which guy?"

"The veteran guy! I was on a field trip to D.C. and the guy just..! Grew and burst!"

"Ah…"

Ah. "Yes, that's why Argonate was refused a licence. He was the first and only person on the trial to have a negative affect like that."

"Why would you need to refuse a license for something that makes people explode?"

"Because it's highly effective at inducing regeneration in patients with otherwise irreparably injuries. The man you saw was a one-lunged paraplegic before he volunteered for the human trials. He was originally going to testify as to how successful the trial was."

She takes a moment to absorb that, steadying her breathing. "Okay."

"I'm sorry, I hadn't realised you witnessed that personally. Doctor von Schadel is a strange man, but he is genuinely trying to make the world a better place."

"Right." She nods. "I'm.. sorry… Ah, Ian. I shouldn't-"

"No, no, I get-"

"-have blown up at you like that."

"-it, that-. Yeah. I get it. Seeing something like that would stick in your mind. Um." He swivels towards me. "Can I tell her about-? You know."

"As far as I'm concerned, certainly."

"Right. Ah. Sorry, what are you.. called?"

"I.. was going to say 'Argent', but the only one using superhero names is Orange Lantern."

"Oh, you can use my name if you like. I'm just physically incapable of saying it. Makes it awkward to bring up in conversation."

"I'm Kara Zor-El!" She waves enthusiastically with both hands. "Hi there!"

"Yeah, I-. Fine, it's Toni. Toni Monetti."

Ian nods. "You see, Toni, we actually had a theft from our laboratories a couple of years ago. Kobra got hold of samples of Argonate and handed it out to some of their cultists. The lucky ones just exploded."

"I'm afraid to say that people exploding is one of the many disturbing things you can run into in this line of work."

Ian nods again. "And I'm one of the others."

Toni shakes her head. "You don't look that bad."

The three of us stare at her, and she puts her hands over her mouth.

"Ah, okay, well this is.. fun, but I think we should get started on the actual training now."

"Oh God please."

"Okay, can you stand on your own platforms?"

"Yess, yes I can."

She holds out her hands, projects two beams of plasma which.. merge in defiance of conventionally understood physics, and expand into a disc in the air. She then steps up onto it, plasma still coming from her hands. It honestly looks like she should be holding herself up, but that's obviously not what's happening.

"And are they safe for other people?"

"Ah, yeah?"

"Okay then, Ian, climb on. The-."

"I'm.. not sure that's a good idea."

I look at him patiently. "You can go with Kara if you-?"

He hops up without further complaint, Miss Monetti stretching it to give him room. I rise up from the landing pad and accelerate northwards. "Follow me."

Kara puts her hands on her hips. "What's wrong with how I fly?!"

clambers

Ah. "Yes, that's why Argonate was refused a licence. He was the first and only person on the trial to have a negative affect like that. I hadn't realised that you saw it first hand."
...
"I'm sorry, I hadn't realised you witnessed that personally. Doctor von Schadel is a strange man, but he is genuinely trying to make the world a better place."
For the second one, insert 'Again, ' before "I'm sorry", otherwise it reads a bit weird.

. Ian was expressing curiosity about her physical uniqueness, not insulting her entire ethnic group

He may have been insulted by her question about his appearance, so he could have been trying to be insulting.

My boss is just a head

Also part hand.

Ah. "Yes, that's why Argonate was refused a licence. He was the first and only person on the trial to have a negative affect like that. I hadn't realised that you saw it first hand."

Most negative effects of drugs just result in a stroke or the throat closing up, but with super drugs, you get explosions.

Kinda reminds me of a scene in Venture Bros where they're reviewing experimental super tech and one of them was a drug that can regenerate a liver, but the side effects is that it doesn't stop, so more livers just keep growing until the subject bursts.

Ian nods. "You see, Toni, we actually had a theft from our laboratories a couple of years ago. Kobra got hold of samples of Argonate and handed it out to some of their cultists. The lucky ones just exploded

I can see a snake cult being interested in a regeneration drug, both for the practical purposes and because it's thematically appropriate.

"No. But Kara's actually pretty nice-"

Kara beams, clasping her hands together next to her head. "Awww..!"
Good god, it's almost parody, the way she tries to be winsome in a 50's way. It'd feel like watching someone today trying to do Japanese animation character tics in real life... Most of which are not attractive or feasible that way.

"-and if you can't cope with being around her, then… You may wish to reconsider your vocation."

Ian clampers off the construct and drops to the deck. "Oof. Hey-."
And really, Kara is the least quirky superhero around, outside of her exaggerated 50's good-girl behaviour.

Miss Monetti stares, pointing at him with her right forefinger. "WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS HEAD?!"

Ian turns to face her, arms wide. "Car crash."
Case in point.

"Huh?"

"The first two cars were okay, just a few broken bones. And then another car drove off the edge of the overpass. And then the shotgun shells in the trunk went off." He lowers his arms. "Why's your skin that color?"
Talk about a conga line of pain.

Kara gasps, hands going to her hips and her eyes glaring! "Ian! You can't just ask someone why their skin's that color!"

"What?" / "What?"
Ah, she kind of misunderstood human racial complexities, didn't she?

"Kara, Kara." I wave my right hand to get her attention. "While I see why you said that, your concern really only applies to typically occurring skin tones."

"But silver's really pretty!"
Yes, but OL means amongst humans. Which generally means shades of ivory, beige, sepia and browns. 🤔 Maybe adding some blue or green in for quirkier Atlantean variants...

"Thank you..?"

"Be that as it may, silver is not a skin colour many humans have. Ian was expressing curiosity about her physical uniqueness, not insulting her entire ethnic group."
Which, to an Un-Man, is more important than simple things like racial origins.

"I still think he could have said it better!"

"Maybe. But she did shout 'what happened to your head' just before that."
Yeah, meeting her energy with like energy.

"That was a medical question!"

"Ah, it's fine..?" Ian shakes his.. torso. "It's not like I don't know I don't have a head. My boss is just a head. Ah. Look, I'm sorry if you're sensitive about your skin-."
It's funny how many head movements translate oddly to body movements...

"No no no, it's-. It's fine, I-." Miss Monetti shakes her head as she snaps out of it. "I should have realised that metahumans can look stranger than… Me."

Kara beams. "And now everyone's friends!"
Wait until you meet some of the Atlanteans.

Not quite the same kind of energy projection, but enough they can probably manage similar tricks outside of constructs.

Ian nods. "I was a metahuman before this… And then Doctor Otto von Schadel saved my life after the crash by… Moving some things around."

"Oh. Ah. How is it?"
I doubt he's going to open up to her like he did OL, given they just met. Still...

"A bit weird to start with. But I got used to it. And the Doc did stuff like this to a lot of people. Back in Aberrance I don't really stand out."

"'Aberr-? You're an Un-Man!"
...Ah, she's familiar with them? That cuts out the need for certain exposition.

"Yeah!" He smiles. "You heard of us?"

"I saw that guy explode because of you guys!"
...Okay, that's new to me.

"Ah. Which guy?"

"The veteran guy! I was on a field trip to D.C. and the guy just..! Grew and burst!"

"Ah…"
Oh, not 'explode' like a bomb. Just... Like a balloon full of meat and blood. Which is probably worse, if less destructive.

Ah. "Yes, that's why Argonate was refused a licence. He was the first and only person on the trial to have a negative affect like that. I hadn't realised that you saw it first hand."

"Why would you need to refuse a license for something that makes people explode?"
An unfortunate side-effect, I take it, or a sign of tampering?

"Because it's highly effective at inducing regeneration in patients with otherwise irreparably injuries. The man you saw was a one-lunged paraplegic before he volunteered for the human trials. He was originally going to testify as to how successful the trial was."

She takes a moment to absorb that, steadying her breathing. "Okay."
A little too successful, it seems. From the sound of it, it triggered rampant regrowth of organic tissues until the skin couldn't, well...

"I'm sorry, I hadn't realised you witnessed that personally. Doctor von Schadel is a strange man, but he is genuinely trying to make the world a better place."

"Right." She nods. "I'm.. sorry… Ah, Ian. I shouldn't-"
Hey, it wasn't his fault anyway. But apologising for tarring him and the good Un-Men with the same brush as the people who messed with the... Argonate? That's worth apologising for.

"No, no, I get-"

"-have blown up at you like that."
...No pun intended. 😏

"-it, that-. Yeah. I get it. Seeing something like that would stick in your mind. Um." He swivels towards me. "Can I tell her about-? You know."

"As far as I'm concerned, certainly."
No need for petty secrets between future teammates and colleagues, after all.

"Right. Ah. Sorry, what are you.. called?"

"I.. was going to say 'Argent', but the only one using superhero names is Orange Lantern."

"Oh, you can use my name if you like. I'm just physically incapable of saying it. Makes it awkward to bring up in conversation."
Nor does it help that he can only really offer his given name, not his full name. So unless they want to call him 'Mister Lantern'...

"I'm Kara Zor-El!" She waves enthusiastically with both hands. "Hi there!"

"Yeah, I-. Fine, it's Toni. Toni Monetti."
Heh, no 'made-up names' confusion here.

I'm guessing it was so destructive because they were in excellent health? With no damage to repair, it went into rampant growth mode... And Ka-splatter.

Ian nods again. "And I'm one of the others."

Toni shakes her head. "You don't look that bad."
Yeah, some of the Un-Men enjoy how they got pummelled with the ugly stick.

The three of us stare at her, and she puts her hands over her mouth.

"Ah, okay, well this is.. fun, but I think we should get started on the actual training now."
Ah, some one-on-one time before they get introduced to the other members of the first class of the program. Gauging their baselines of stuff like power output, versatility and endurance...

"Oh God please."

"Okay, can you stand on your own platforms?"

"Yess, yes I can."
That much we know from the comics. Which means there's some manner of kinetic control aspect to lift stuff.

She holds out her hands, projects two beams of plasma which.. merge in defiance of conventionally understood physics, and expand into a disc in the air. She then steps up onto it, plasma still coming from her hands. It honestly looks like she should be holding herself up, but that's obviously not what's happening.
Certainly, if she was limited to her own physical strength, it wouldn't be nearly so stable. Teenage girl, after all.

"And are they safe for other people?"

"Ah, yeah?"

"Okay then, Ian, climb on. The-."
Quite the weight increase. Seeing if she can handle it now before it becomes critical, of course.

"I'm.. not sure that's a good idea."

I look at him patiently. "You can go with Kara if you-?"
Either way, you're going to have to be in close proximity to a teenage girl, Ian. If that's a problem, best to work on it now.

He hops up without further complaint, Miss Monetti stretching it to give him room. I rise up from the landing pad and accelerate northwards. "Follow me."

Kara puts her hands on her hips. "What's wrong with how I fly?!"
Damn, my google-fu is failing me. I was going to link a picture of various superhero flight passenger-carrying positions. But I can't find any... But the point is, there's only so many ways a girl her size can carry a grown adult without it looking silly or being awkward. Not all of them are comfortable for the passenger, either.

Not the most awkward first meeting of prospective teammates/future colleagues, but it could have been way worse. Does seem like a good plan to start off with the mentor getting a handle on their rough range of capabilities, power-wise. Wonder how the other Team members in mentor positions are getting along with their prospects...

It'd feel like watching someone today trying to do Japanese animation character tics in real life... Most of which are not attractive or feasible that way.

Funny you should mention Japanese animation. I finally pinned down what OL and Kara are doing. It's a manzai routine. Well, not in the formal sense of course, but it's very much a style of comedy you see come up pretty frequently if you watch a lot of anime.

Kara plays the boke, spewing rapid fire nonsense and misunderstandings, while Paul serves as the tsukkomi correcting her errors. They're engaged in a kind of verbal duel. Kara as the boke looks for every possible excuse to misunderstand and misinterpret the situation, while Paul tries to box her in with his explanations, leaving her no opportunities or excuses to misunderstand further. Paul doesn't do the more typical tsukkomi thing of getting openly angry. Instead of slapping her with a paper fan, he sneaks in withering put-downs.

"No. But Kara's actually pretty nice-"

Kara beams, clasping her hands together next to her head. "Awww..!"

"-and if you can't cope with being around her, then… You may wish to reconsider your vocation."

As above. At this point I have to think that both of them are having loads of fun with it. I mean, why would they hang out so much if they weren't both enjoying the banter?
