Interlude I: Early Spring 4711 Part 3
Valerie occupied the head of the table, but admitted that Harrim might as well have been in her seat, at least for today. The cleric of Groetus might have worshipped the 'wrong god', but he was still a cleric, and more importantly he was responsible for the actual council position of managing the day to day religious affairs of a kingdom with a great variety of religious representation.Harrim had been left in charge of religious affairs, and supported a set down list of codified laws. They had originally been transcribed in Common, but she'd seen a number of copies begin to circulate in Draconic. She could understand why, the clerics of Iomedae who had travelled from Mendev had spoken of silvers dragons who were apart of Iomedae's church. Their response to Shaoyu had as a result been somewhat more mild than she expected the clerics and paladins of Shelyn might have been but then it was similarly possible these were simply inured enough to dragons in general.
Whatever the case was the draconic translation of the law code had found its way into the hands of the kobolds, who were something of a nuisance in their presence and their seemingly unending questions about watching a 'big person' kingdom unfold. That was what was happening, a kingdom was taking shape before their eyes. It was going to be a religiously diverse one. No, it was a religiously diverse one. That was clear as Tristian returned to the chamber, with Jhod who was himself followed by a handful of other Erastilian faithful, and a smaller cloister of related faiths.
Erastil wasn't the issue, not old dead eye nor his wife, even though there had been grumbling about the farming institutions put in place in the baronial administered farms, but they had been soothed enough by the fact that those changes only applied to the baron's personal lands, not to those of traditional farmers and croft communities. No, the issue at hand was Pharasma's lot. Maybe if it had just been Jaethal it would have been one thing.
If it had just been the mid wives, and various minor village clergy dedicated to Pharasma they'd have probably heard less complaints. They had less of an issue Jaethal, or Davik Nettle being undead than clerics from Rostland, or for that matter from Pharasman visitors from further south. Of course Nettle's patron deity was Abadar, which was sure to be less controversial than Jaethal having been directly reanimated by the Pallid Princess... and well it wasn't as if Kyonin was precisely thrilled. Though that, could be just as much Jaethal's position at court as it could be the elves issue with her undead status.
Harrim grunted in excessive surly-ness as he sat down.
She glanced from the Mendevian delegation of Iomedae's church to those from Cheliax far to the south. Iomedae had been a Chelish noblewoman before she had ascended, but that had been before the present infernal monarchy had come to power, and there was a diaspora of those who the church was helping to resettle away from the infernal dominated courts of the nation. The problem was the Iomedae clergy didn't want to deal with her or Harrim... they would work out religious matters with the dwarf if they had to but, the truth was she gathered they wanted to wait.
Any doctrinal issues that might have existed between the southerners and the crusaders or Eire's branch of the church were secondary to just venerating the same goddess. It was no secret that the baron was an immensely powerful cleric, and his first significant building project had been the cathedral rather than a castle, or palace.
"The worship of Pharasma is not proscribed," Harrim grunted a bit louder than normal, as he banged his hand on the table looking at the elf across the table from him, "The dead one hasn't managed to start a plague and if we're being frank about it her goddess doesn't talk to her any more than I hear from Groetus but even if she did the laws are written down, we've all agreed to follow the barony's laws. Sentient undead are still people." He grunted.
She doubted the argument was convincing the elf, but they'd only really been complaining since Eire had left... and actually that was probably why. "Jaethal's position as advisor to the coronet is not up for discussion. She fought against the corruption that occupied the temple of the elk as well as against the stag lord, and is even now charged to the destruction of a group of evil fae." She declared in her best regent voice hoping that would be enough to put an end to the matter.

A flurry of archons whirled through the air firing rays of holy light at the fleeing willowisps who had realized that the messengers of heaven were immune to their electricity. Shaoyu dropped back to the ground folding her wings beside him looking around.
He glanced around. They were making progress, even if it was slow going. The fires had to be controlled. It would have been so much easier if they had wanted to just scour the whole island with an inferno, but that wasn't the goal. Small controlled burns cleared swathes of nettles and thorns bit by bit.
... and of course once they dispelled the malignant aura and destroyed the wisps they could bring in horses to plow the grounds with steel plows to churn through the burned soil, but that was getting ahead of themselves. They weren't to that stage yet.
A stream of ectoplasmic... gunk bled from the flying skulls side as the archons convreged in for the kill down the hillside Short of just spamming magic missile , and since willowisps could fly simply setting the terrain around them wasn't practical, summoning was his best method of countering them. Calling entire flights of archons in had the added advantage of they served as excellent scouts and seeing what needed to be burned in addition to ferreting out the willowisps infesting the island.
They were slowly making progress clearing a traversable, with horses, path to to the summit where the iobarians had built ... whatever it was the tower and ruins surrounding it had been in the time before the starfall. He was eager to go over the ruins, even though they had likely long been stripped of any valuable easily transportable items. The ruins would let them side step around starting from scratch. Enough of the ancient curtain walls, and the tower appeared at least from a distance to be intact that repairing them should be easier, and more importantly was the simple geographic location of Candlemere.
"I think we'll need another few days," He announced, tonight would be the flood moon, which might encourage an attack from the remaining willowisps, or they might choose to remain away. Whether they stayed away or attacked they weren't in a position to mount a final approach to the summit yet. Once they approached he wanted to be sure he had enough time to not simply cast Dispel Chaos, and sanctify the grounds, but take other precautions, and part of that included being in a position to do that only after all the willowisps had been killed or at least driven off... and as the archons were certain they weren't there yet.
"How do you think Jaethal and the others are doing?" Linzi asked.
"I'd hope they're done already, but I'm sure either way they're fine." It was the larger of their two parties, and he was relatively sure that Perlivash and Tyg would be of some use. "The bigger issue on their end is the distance overland," and the river's noxious smell due to its tendency towards algae blooms making it difficult to travel it by barge made part of the journey by horse all but a requirement. It was also through the countryside, any elven path or other civilized concourse had long since been broken up and overgrown... and making new roads or bringing old roads back into service required a much greater work force, labor pool, whatever as well as organization than he could afford, so overland travel was going to have to do without the luxury of paved roads for the time being.
"and," Scribble scribble, "What do you think Harrim is doing right now?"
.... probably cursing being made head priest of the kingdom...

Notes: Alright so we will be going into the original planned lead into spring 4711 next week, but more or less this is as a chapter an example of the AP's explore the hexmap and see what your people find, carve out territory and make your kingdom.
