Esquestria: The House of the Sun - A pony cultist experience

Why, I always believed that doing our own sacraments would be best because it would advance our lore's through our personal view of them instead of taking someone else's view.
Vibes, mostly. And I gotta disagree w/ the "personal Sacrament is best" thing, considering that our personal Lantern Sacrament requires us to eat people and Baldomare's doesn't. And I really don't want to do our personal Grail Sacrament (or Mareinette's, but that's a different issue).

Well if we can use a criminal, then I don't think it matters with Lantern. If needed we can have one of our Luna agents imprison a criminal, say that we are personally interrogating them then do our ritual. Also what exactly is the problem with the Grail Sacrament. I'm forgetting what exactly The Act does to our three minions.

It's safer, you get a master's tutelage and practical experience, and you very likely get an opportunity to advance the personal relationship a little bit. Axe wants us to do an errand, our own method involves trying to figure out how to replicate something that was done with a noose.

Can't help but think that Lantern Sacramenting a Bureau prisoner would be... more than a bit suspicious? Considering the body can't even be used to make a Risen afterwards, and if it's at all analogous to the Lantern process in CS we're going to be basically eating their soul/personality.

I will grant that I'd be willing to do our personal Lantern Sacrament on Copper, but that's mostly because we're probably going to end up killing her at some point regardless.

As for Grail: the Sacrament text seems to imply permanent mega-brainwashing.

Yes it would be suspicious but i'm sure there are ways around that suspicion, like setting up a jail break, or saying the person attempted to use a teleportation magic and succeeded. As for the Grail, The part about brainwashing is kind of strange to me, because if two people care about each other to the core, then you brainwash them int caring about each other to the core. What is the practical difference of the before and after. It honestly completely depends on what the exact effects of the ritual are, and as far as i can find, I couldn't find a cost, DC check or even the outcome.

There's a difference btwn "deeply caring about someone" and "I will force you to longer be capable of even thinking about 'leaving' me NO MATTER WHAT".

I just don't like it, and I don't want to lock that kind of yandere-ness into Velvet's Grail, the same way I don't want Mareinette's Alukite-ness getting into our Grail. Even if that means staying at Grail 4.

Also, I wonder if ingraining ourselves enough w/ the Bureau to the point that they're personally loyal to us (and Luna, probably) specifically could serve as a way to 'launder' the Lores into the Bureau without getting Celestia involved? Though the trail would still lead back to us... but we've also demonstrably been able to initiate someone into the Lores without them necessarily realizing it (Rarity), which should be enough for them to start having Mansus-dreams, iirc. Like not consistently or anything, but still. Maybe enough to justify 'bringing' it to Luna's attention, who can then 'investigate' the dream realm and 'find' the Mansus.

Things to consider, I suppose.

Which means that, as you look around your desk, and then your office, you also realize you really aren't interested in engaging with any of those matters right now.
Well, I would have at least read the letter from Fair Trial, but fair enough.

Well, saying that you are the "problem" seems rather harsh. But still, you would have to be delusional to think that you aren't the "reason" as to why those attempted conversations were all awkward and, well, so very short.

So, sooner rather than later, you decided to end your walk around the Bureau. And you made your way back to your office.

No, you did not have a sullen and defeated look on your face. Stop imagining things.
Well, to be fair she IS not only their boss, but has explicitly authority higher than anyone in the country except Celestia. And, in only SOME respects, Cadance, Midday Dew and Fair Trial, and even that's only in very specific cases/niches.

That desk, you presume, is where all the incoming mail is gathered. And the several "out" boxes on the desk, destined to your office, other desks of the Secretariat, or even to other departments, are a testament to how much information passes through this place. Although the large trash bin, full of triturated letters, also speaks of just how much is filtered.
I'm kinda curious about what gets just destroyed. fanmail? baseless threats? subtle attempts at bribes that are not blatant enough to prosecute? Invitations to Parties?

Surely we don't get ads!

...oh, I just noticed THIS is what we're doing right now

-[X] [COMMISSIONER] The Bureau is more than an institution, it is a gathering of dedicated ponies working towards a unified goal. Ingrain yourself with them. (Establish, increase, or salvage the loyalty of the Bureau towards you personally.)

I forgot it was in the agenda

The mare in charge of your calendar, a smartly dressed white unicorn called Inkwell, gives you a short nod. Although you can tell that even she is slightly relieved that, well, you are about to make sense of your sudden visit here.
...the former assistant to the princess? uh, wiki tells me she's basically just a random no-name background pony in the show. So I assume the "assistant to the princess" thing was basically a fanon/fanfic thing. I've seen it fairly often.

They used to know you from the sound of the magical bell you ring, to summon one of them. Or from one of the piercing yells you let out, whenever you call for the Deputy.

But now, they know you by your name. And you call them by theirs.

You have taken the first step towards knowing the Lunar Bureau better. And towards being better known by them in turn.
It's a first step.

...I wonder if we could reach the point of turning the Bureau to being personal to us over the princess... we probably don't need to go that far, but I wonder...

It would likely take a LOT of work, though. And to do it 100% would be really hard.

However, that book also had terms like "sitting cross-legged" and "keeping your spine vertical" towards the floor.
...Did she somehow get a human (or at least minotaur/bipedal) book?

"… but right now, it just feels like I'm talking to myself. Like there's nopony else in here but me!"
maybe because the other Velvet's she's trying to look through are ALSO attempting to meditate?

[ROLLING 1d9 FOR LORE]
intriguing.

And now I'm wondering if we could get Sacraments from the Other Velvets.

damn, I'd take "SH Sacrament gives you teachers for other Sacraments" as a power!

Because the ground is hard. And more importantly, it is very, very cold. So cold that you can even feel it through your horseshoes.
...winter?

You are currently in a… room of sorts. There is a bed right behind you, but you are definitely not in a bedroom. The walls are made out of stone, as is the floor, and everywhere you look there is a bookshelf full of tomes or a table covered with strange alchemical tools.
forge?

A strange sense of vertigo runs through you, as you look at that. It's just that you haven't seen your right-side cutie mark in so long that…
...does the scar go through that one too?

This guilt, for example, seems to be something that you… that this Velvet carries inside of her, even though her mind just escaped somewhere else.
so, is our SH power to possess other Velvets for some time? That would be interesting, and could give us access to other sources of lores, and maybe even Sacraments.

Question is, where is the local Velvet right now? Is she in OUR History?

-a thought occurs to you. No, not a thought. A memory from just now.

You are looking at yourself. Examining a familiar dress, as you look into a mirror in a familiar room.

Velvet Covers is looking at your body, her expression as curious as your own. Examining the rich room, and then the vista of Canterlot outside the window, with the same amount of wonder.

That is, until she looks at her reflection in the mirror, and gives it a short bow.

That is, until she looks at you, and gives you a short bow.

And the agreement of a time, no more than one hour, is reached-
well, apparently SHE IS.

So we can trade places with another Velvet.

And this explains WHY it's dangerous. What if we trade place with an Evil/Dangerous Velvet? Like a Velvet who might want to kill someone we love, or a Velvet unwilling to come back (for example one that lost her own family).

On the other end... if we could trade places with an Edge Velvet, that could be useful in emergency combat. If we could reach an agreement with a Sacramented Velvet, for her to teach us somehow through the divide...

You seem to be… inside a shop? Yes, this is definitely a shop. The temperature is almost freezing, and you can see hints of fog and icing on a window. One that seems to lead to a street of sorts. But more importantly, you can see several wares placed on wooden shelves. Foodstuff, supplies for the cold, and several items besides that you aren't really familiar with.
I'm starting to wonder... Windigos came and brought the Winter again?

You try to sniff at the air, and you feel… you feel…

You can't feel anything. Nopony nearby, not your apprentice, not even yourself…

Fascinating. You try to close your eyes, but you don't see anything other than the darkness of your eyelids.
intriguing. The Realizations are tied to our original body, apparently. And yet our knowledge of the other Lores is presumably NOT gone...

"Well, actually, somepony did pass by here, Master," he says, but he shrugs as if he wasn't about to say anything new. "That junkie Amore passed by a few minutes ago, begging for another drop. But I shooed her away, no worries."
...Amore?

As in Mi Amore Cadenza?

As in Cadance?

also we're a drug dealer?

Or maybe, it is not addictive at all. Because from what you understand, the only thing that substance does is allow you to look at "another life" of yours.

But… but if your current life is miserable, and drinking from that potion allows you to see a life that is just perfect, how could that potion be anything but addictive to you?
...oh my Glory...

so she's seeing the life of a Cadance married to Shining?!

"No, you don't. Y-you really don't… I… Merry, I was beautiful. I… I saw it, I swear I saw it. I had a horn and… and my dress… and he loved me, Merry… He loved me more than anypony ever loved me in my entire life."
...yep. she saw the MARRIAGE.

damn. to a junkie living under a bridge... that's just cruel.

"And what if I told you that… I can tell you where you can find him. Here, in real life, rather than just in your visions from the bottom of a flask?"

You say that, and you watch as Cadance's eyes go wide in surprise. No, more than just that.

You see in Cadance's eyes something that she hasn't felt in several years now. You see in Cadance something that, just for an instant, flashes brighter than her fears, and her regrets, and even her sorrow and addiction.

You see in her eyes… a glimmer of hope.

"His name is Shining Armor, and you will find him in a city called Canterlot. He is just a bit younger than you, and you will probably find him with a purple unicorn called…"

You tell her everything you know.

You tell her everything you can.

And seconds before your time is up, you hear her promise you that no matter what it costs her, or how long it takes, that she will find him.

"Thank you, Merry Locksmith, I… I will never forget this."
I really hope Shining is alive and will give her a chance here.

Velvet is, as always, very dedicated to her friends' happiness... when she can afford to be, at least.

[SH Sacrament – First Step, cd 110]

[Roll: 61 + 14 (Learning) + 40 (Secret Histories Level 4) = 115]

[Success]

[But did you learn anything from it?, cd 100]

[Roll: 25 72 + 14 (Learning) + 40 (Knock Level 4) = 116]

[Knock re-roll used]

[Success]

You have advanced one step towards your Secret Histories Sacrament. The next step will be harder.

Gained one Knock
scrap of Lore.

Knock-Velvet, the wandering potion-maker who had secluded herself in distant Yake Range, has made amicable contact with you, and perhaps learned a little bit from her foray into your History.

Servant-actions results to follow.

Knock? kind of a shame if it would be possible to share Sacraments somehow. We're well set for Knock.

Knock-Velvet might have enjoyed meeting our Names, I think. Shame for her we didn't have Axe summoned right now.

Also we're now a single scrap away from being able to try for the Knock Sacrament. A Single Lesson from Axe, or us getting lucky in a mansus expedition or another SH sacrament action...

Here's the question, again: We can learn from our experience. Can we learn Sacraments too, if we visit a Velvet's world of the appropriate world? If we trade place with a SACRAMENTED Velvet?

Something else to consider: Next step, and presumably the third too, will be harder. We Roll SH, and then another lore for what we learned.

Should we consider getting an Influence from Baldomare, and doing both actions at once next turn?

Actually, we could probably do something like this:

action 1: SH Sacrament 2
action 2: SH Sacrament 3
Baldomare: SH Influence
Cult Exploration: Tower that leads to the Mansus Moon

beyond that... maybe we should consider searching for books in person too, then? If we could add an AotL we could potentially roll +104 (+25 from SH 5, +40 from influence, + 25 from AotL SH, +14 from Learning).

We could probably find lvl 5 books or above. and... @OurLadyOfWires just to be sure, if we roll sufficiently high in a search can we potentially get books for free or for cheaper than normal?

Still, if we had Rarity take a commission we could probably afford even fairly expensive books.

So add

Rarity: Commission for more bits
Jade or Fluttershy: prepare an AotL ritual circle for us?
action 3: book search in person, range of result should be 105 to 204.

Correct me if I'm wrong but we can't go on an expedition the same turn we discover it right?

If that is the case we need Baldomare to scry for the Frangiclave so we can grab it the turn after, there will almost definitely be high level books there too. We can use one that we don't need or at least won't need until way later to extend her summon.

Plus we can take the Influence the turn after and then do the SH actions.

Slightly concerned about what alternate Velvet might have done in our world.
mh... if next turn we went for a full SH plan (Sacraments, money and book search, AotL, SH influence) maybe we could also dedicate a Confidant or Name action to... escort the new Velvet around, to explain things and keep an eye on them?

A Name could also stop her from doing too much bad.

Oh yeah. I'm not crazy about it, like I have seen online in fandoms, but I really liked some of the songs. Also, Emily is adorable and I really like her.
I really need to watch it sometimes. I only really know two or three songs from it, and that's it.

For Lantern, the big question is if we can use prisoners from our Luna bureau.

answer is most likely no. We agreed with Fair Trial to put the Bureau's prisoner fates in the court's hooves. That means we can't just make prisoners disappear.

Honestly we should just do what we COULD have done to open the Tribal door: use a scrying ritual to find the worst wretched criminal the world won't miss, capture them, and do it to them.

Potentially the same for Mareinette's grail sacrament.

Speaking of Sacraments looking through our list, we can easily do Knock and winter. It would just take some time.

winter is a strong maybe due to moral problems. I'm leaning towards being willing to do it, but I'm hoping Neighnia offers something more palatable.

Grails are the most disturbing, but all things considered I'm more willing to do Mareinette's than Velvet's.

That said, who knows... maybe the SH Sacrament will offer an alternative, and we can learn from a Grail Velvet instead?

Correct me if I'm wrong but we can't go on an expedition the same turn we discover it right?

We might be able to use a conditional? Maybe we can have the scrying happen before we finalize the turn, just like we sometimes did summons before the full planning session.

Read everything now and... Wow. It certainly changes a lot of things.

The first thing is the Bureau getting close to us, would that mean they may find out about our scar? If it does better wait a bit before taking that action again.

The other is we finally found out what the SH Sacrament action does and how high of a cd it has, that is gonna keep getting higher(I think the second will have 130 and the third 150). There is also the chance of lore scraps but I don't know if it is just Knock or if we had that option because that was Knock-Velvet.

Potentially the same for Mareinette's grail sacrament.
Nope. We are not tainting our Grail with the Sacrament of an Alukite.

The first thing is the Bureau getting close to us, would that mean they may find out about our scar? If it does better wait a bit before taking that action again.

I doubt it. We had to explicitly tell Cadance for her to find out, after all, and Velvet is good at hiding things now

Nope. We are not tainting our Grail with the Sacrament of an Alukite.
Still better than permanently brainwashing our very closest friends and allies I think. Though... @OurLadyOfWires could Velvet dedicate time to better understand what the Sacrament will actually do (or alternatively you more explicitly tell us if she already knows) WITHOUT taking it?

As in, can we hear Velvet's understanding of "The Act" in her words? We're no longer in SV, so I imagine it shouldn't be a problem

Damn, I'll go start threadmarking omakes. We got some seriously good stuff waiting in both sites.

…Bird. Bird stop. You can't just tease us with shit like this when we don't even know where to begin looking into it.
I have no idea what you are talking about :V

Why, I always believed that doing our own sacraments would be best because it would advance our lore's through our personal view of them instead of taking someone else's view.
About this small debate, I'll figure it out later but I really have no interest in writing Velvet's personal Knock Sacrament. I'm still thinking if I'll just cross it out or not, but for now eh.

@OurLadyOfWires just to be sure, if we roll sufficiently high in a search can we potentially get books for free or for cheaper than normal?
Not that I remember. Rolling better just gives you more or better options, but not cheaper ones.

Though... @OurLadyOfWires could Velvet dedicate time to better understand what the Sacrament will actually do (or alternatively you more explicitly tell us if she already knows) WITHOUT taking it?
No. The subtext tells you all you need to know, or all you can know.

Sometimes, getting a Sacrament is like jumping into a pit.

eh, if you want to just cross it out it's fine.

You can even justify it as Velvet not being willing to replicate Jade's near-suicide on herself when she has what sounds like a simpler option available.

Oh, I agree.

But this is a tiny peeve I have with myself. I am perfectly fine with seeing a narrative element and bending the mechanical side of the quest to accommodate it. But here, the issue is that we have a mechanical problem (me not being interested in the Sacrament). So, I feel a little more resistant bending the narrative to accommodate it.

I mean, creating narrative explanations is doable. More than that, it's plain easy. There are several reasons as to why Velvet could just decide not to do it. However, the fact remains that, for every one of those reasons, the "better" alternative would be for me to design a different Sacrament that she is willing to pursue.

But that's the crux of the matter. I, uh, just want to write Axe's Sacrament. :V

Also, we got a canon omake in the other site. Fascinating.

It is entirely correct, except for two very specific words. Still, a nail has been hit on the head, even if accidentally.

I don't suppose we could instead get you to design better/different Sacraments for... I don't know... Grail, Winter, Moth... 😇

uh, I'll have to check in a bit.

We can't find and clear an expedition on the same turn. So if we want to try and do Frangiclave expedition T20, gambling on whether it or BtRC2 have a good enough book, we'd have scry it T19.

I'm hoping for some tier 7 books here and you guys think we won't even get a tier 5? The Frangiclaive is going to be on the literal edge of the world, among the most dangerous set of expedition locations. Hell we might even get something for Marinette.

Bird you can't just say this and not elaborate what the words were, my curiosity will kill me.

Oh, delightful! That's satisfying.

It was an interesting piece of Baldomare's perspective to write and I was quite happy with how it turned out. It's nice to know I was successful with it! I do appreciate the little clues to deeper lore you sprinkle in with off-hand mentions in longer chapters.

Are the two words "Watchman's Heirloom"?

A continuation of the Histories
"This Library used to have another section, you know? Or maybe this place is a section of that first Library? Well, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that you are here now, so what can I help you with?"

"No, you don't need a library card. You pay with your time, dear. But then again, isn't that the currency we use for everything else? Well, there is also blood of course, but please don't get blood on the books like some of our patrons did."

"What was that? You want to know what happened? Nothing much, really. Just that same old and tired story. They came with their pitchforks, and their torches, and their anger. And they never really realized they were burning their own land."

"The old address? Well, that is something I can give you. There are still plenty of great books there, but be careful not to anger any of the ghosts!"

[Side-stories, omakes and outright theorycrafts will follow, haphazardly and out of order. Here you will see anything that has been made with love and dedication, and that someone, somewhere, deemed precious enough to commit into eternity.]

[CANON stories will have their titles starting with "What of..."]

[NON-CANON stories will have their titles starting with "In which..."]

[IMAGES will have their titles starting with "A look at..." since we do not have a dedicated media threadmark]

These are two stories from people who participate in this quest of ours that you should definitely take a look at if you have the time!

Thank you for your efforts, and I hope we can have a wonderful time reading your stories!

ok, if I remember right the "What of" omake are the canon (or close to it) ones, so

Bird said it's completely right other than for two words, right?

I'm guessing the two words are "Watchman's heirloom"

and someone said it first!

You know, maybe we should import at least the "What of" omake ones? They're the more important ones after all.

"Copper, you know, ah, I … don't really see you … that way."
Yknow, I won't get into the habit of threadmarking omakes that were already posted in the other site. But this extra ending definitely justified it. This was hillarious.

@OurLadyOfWires: your regular delivery of copyedits :D.
Thank you kindly! Finally got the time to fix them now.

Mareinette does not quite shuffle in place. She does not. She does not. She is a Lady, and a Lady does not shuffle in place. Nope.
I also wasn't going to comment on any of the awesome omakes we got. I like commenting on all of them, but I don't have the time right now as I am threadmarking them.

But boy oh boy, let me tell you. I laughed when I read this part. The image of everyone just freezing as they collectively realized Mareinette had her jaws wide open as she holds Luna's hoof was golden.

Bird you can't just say this and not elaborate what the words were, my curiosity will kill me.
"Bird! Bird! Worshipper of the Hour that is literally based on Agony! Please, release me from this pain I feel!"

Mmmmyess, asking me this is like asking Mareinette to help look for your missing foal. Because how could she possibly be the one who put you in this predicament to begin with?

:V

Still...
Are the two words "Watchman's Heirloom"?
"Marked as insightful" I suppose.

Hope you are all doing well. Glad to get this out of my to-do list.

Whose Heirloom could it be if not the Watchman? The Colonel would leave one of Edge and the SiR Winter. Meniscate maybe? I suppose the SiS is an option too…
Watchpony. He said the words were wrong not the truths they represent, but I could be wrong too.

Sure, I definitely think that it's likely that it would also have high-level books (if not necessarily Level 7, since Frangiclave is there and is the key to a Name's friendship). But then, we also thought it was likely that one of the Blank Plains' locations would give us a Winter scrap ("it's the Winter area! how could it not?"), and we all know how that prediction turned out.

I'll note, on the talk of next turn, that there's a very good chance that Axe will just… go get the key, the moment we find it and tell her. Maybe even force an automatic expedition. I can't really see her going "oh, you know where the thing I need to end my eras long imprisonment is? I guess I can wait a month or two for you to be ready to get it."
