The Rif war was ongoing in 1926 and fighting in the Russian Civil Wars would exist until 1928, the warlord years in China are still ongoing even after Chiang 'unifies' the republic, Latin America and Mexico are both having stuff and things going onGreat chapter, and great job showing the "moral" dilemmas of an evil Dumbledore, and a realistically evil Dumbledore
I wonder if there was was a war in 1926 for Tanya to have participated in? Dumbledore seems to be assuming it was simple reincarnation and that she was a normal witch in her previous life, but if he looks into it and finds there was no war what is he going to assume? That Tanya got the year wrong? That the entire thing was an act? Something else?
I misspoke - I wonder if there was a war with Trench warfare and either aircraft or magical aerial attacks for Tanya to have participated in 1926. Not sure about the Rif war or the Latin America conflicts, but neither the Russian civil war or china's wars at the time involved trench warfare. The Rif war was ongoing in 1926 and fighting in the Russian Civil Wars would exist until 1928, the warlord years in China are still ongoing even after Chiang 'unifies' the republic, Latin America and Mexico are both having stuff and things going on
Yeah, with all of the mystery and danger Tanya presents, from a purely pragmatic position it could be argued he did the right thing. At the same time there are many principles that woudl condemn him for it. This is an actual example of a man making a hard decision.Albus' moral dilemma, written… actually, really well!
This is the ideal "Greater Good" Dumbledore, when not intentionally being a parody.
Hopefully having a clear explanation will trigger Tanya's rational complex so she calms down when she inevitably goes into panic mode about having her mind messed with.Don't remember but with the whole Being X thing, it may be a hot topic button.
She mentioned the Rhine, specifically, by name IIRC.I misspoke - I wonder if there was a war with Trench warfare and either aircraft or magical aerial attacks for Tanya to have participated in 1926. This is hardly a Dark Dumbledore. This is an old man feeling nervous about history repeating itself and working up the nerve to check and see if his worries are founded or not when after the last time he had these same worries and ignored them a civil war broke out. He is absolutely in the wrong, but what he did was hardly evil. He asked a few questions, learned that his worst fears are not happening and stopped all questions regardless of how curious he might be.Ah, good to get confirmation we're dealing with a Dark!Dumbledore.
Looking forward to Tanya killing him.
He could just handwave it as being a colloquialism for the soldiers at the time. She mentioned the Rhine, specifically, by name IIRC.
Dumbledore's either going to conclude many-worlds theory or something *spectacularly* fucky, because there wasn't Trench warfare that brutal or horrifying around the Rhine River in Western Germany in 1926
That seems like the least likely explanation of all his available options.
I think he would largely not care about the specifics, he finally can file her in a box, especially with verbal confirmation of her motives in Hogwarts, and if reincarnated ex-soldier is a little strange its not the type of strange he's worried about. She mentioned the Rhine, specifically, by name IIRC.

the greatest and most persistent fanfic, is that our leaders and authorities are competent and moral. And when they aren't, it feels like a betrayal, for which they must be punished. The thing with Dumbledore many people don't seem to understand is… he's HUMAN. He makes mistakes either short term or long term on occasion, and often for good reasons either be it because he's listening too much to one side of morality or pragmatism. But in the end all he wants is true good for people both muggle and magical.
Edit; It's why I despise evil manipulative Dumbledore in fics because it's so badly misrepresenting the character. Especially when MCs in fics that would arguably be more evil than canonical Dumbledore if this Dumbledore wasn't flanderized to hell and back
What's worse is, that Dumbledore IS competent and moral. But sadly his competence is tanked both by being a character in a children's book series forcing him to not live to his potential because how else would the protagonist get into the adventures and conflicts they do, and because he's holding too many jobs and positions and if he were to abdicate them sadly the ones to fill them would be immoral.the greatest and most persistent fanfic, is that our leaders and authorities are competent and moral. My view of canon dumbles, is that he's "The Folly of the Experts" in competence. That being, he's so incredible in his field, both he and everyone else have been tricked into assuming his competence in everything else, when really he's kinda a bumbling idiot, outside of his field.
As for his morality... he's very french, when everyone is thinking he should be english, an when it's shown he's not, they assign him as german.

It is a rather fetching gay robe. And he has several, so always rather stylish. Elton John would have been an incredibly amusing Dumbledore.Eh, I view Canon Dumbledore as being basically five+ caricatures standing on each others' shoulders and wrapped in a flamboyantly gay robe.
