I didn't think Paul has forged rings yet. He forged a lantern and also pulled Kronos' ring out of the Holden of Avarice, but making a new ring with all the functions that Malthusian imbue in their rings I don't think Paul has done that yet.
I rather suspect any defence Kalmin has is likely to be somewhat inimical to organic matter. So best to poke him with a long stick. Like, say, a ten-foot-pole. Or better yet, a twelve-foot-pole, just in case the traps have an eleven-foot radius.
