With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

After a reread, I concur that we've had 3 near-full pages out of the story only 87 of the SI trying to get back to earth immediately after investigating boss smiley. The SI needs to get back on track, or his "perfect memory" is flawed

Gosh, sure hope there's nothing else to distract him after he returns to Earth. Like the Batman OMAC situation finally exploding or something.

The thing is, 'getting back on track' would involve him ignoring the collapsed state of human civilisation, the potential that Zor is still active, the war with the Reach, whatever is going on with Batman and... Everything else. Also importantly, Boss Smiley almost certainly isn't trying to make things worse at the moment.

Weapon was positron ray.

Partially deflected by my armour's force field and it still burned a line across my shoulder. Positron beams aren't light speed weapons, but at this range they're close enough for most purposes. This armour isn't rated against Scarab Warrior-level opponents.
Is there a reason Paul doesn't have a suit of Maltusian-made armor?

Is it because he realizes he can't really corrupt anyone if all forms of government are still trying to set themselves back up? Or are the other members of the Light leaning on him to not do anything for now?

Yeah! After all, if he wants to make things worse all he has to do is sit back and let Orange Lantern keep going like he has been. 😂

Hinon nods to herself. "Oh, that's where he went."

Ayeadjujguh-!

"'Oh, that's where he-'." I make an 'exploding head' gesticulation with both arms. "Hinon, it was the Spectre!"

She looks at me like I'm being a little dense. "Yes, you did explain that at some length. I said that I didn't have much information on the planet, and that was why I hesitated to recommend it."

"My grandfather build a monument to his victory out of destroyed ships and their surviving crews!"

"Grayven, do you have any concept of how many places Yuga Khan built things like that?"

That brings me up short. It's not like Father liked talking about Grandfather, and most of the senior New Gods of his generation weren't really involved with him prior to his enwallment. I… Actually don't know how common it was, either from my own memories or Other Grayven's.

"Nno? How many?"

She time she actually sighs. "Grayven, I was in a coma for millions of years. I didn't even know that your grandfather existed until recently."

I frown. "I know… Scale can be an issue, but wasn't Apokolips in general worth a briefing? Given our relationship and the Anti-Life?"

"Those two things are the only reason why I know at all. Grayven, do you understand how large a galaxy is? And how long a million years?"

"Yuga Khan was the most powerful being in the material universe."

"Was. I didn't look into him in any detail because as we both know, once a menace to civilisation ends up upon the Source Wall, they're no longer an active element in galactic civilisation, no matter how powerful they were before."

"The recording said otherwise."

"Yes, and while that was an uncharacteristically modest statement on the part of Yuga Khan, I'm not prepared to accept it as literal truth." But at least she's thinking about it. "Do you know of any other beings like the Spectre?"

"Jesus Christ."

She gives me an odd look, then nods. "Ah, you're being literal."

"Not that I expect you to have good records on him-"

"Good, because I don't."

"-but there aren't many things with that sort of link to the Source that aren't New Gods, and if Grandfather could use a New God then there'd be hundreds of escape routes." I smile faintly. "And Father would have spent more time working out how to disarm them."

"Do you intend to tell him?"

"Go to Apokolips voluntarily? Heck no."

"It may be worth doing. If I recall the briefing correctly, his own father is the only thing that Darkseid fears. He may actually feel grateful."

"Yes. Getting another piece of the Anti-Life Equation injected into my soul is exactly what I need."

"Yes? You have friends, now. If I understood your explanation of Equestrian magic correctly, that's all you need."

"All I need if I want Father to start actively investigating something that apparently deletes the Anti-Life at will. Once he could accept. More than that and he's going to start trying to work out how to Anti-Life all of Wilson. Or just destroy it with a fleet."

"Hm. Alright. So if we can return to the purpose of this exercise, will you be using the planet?"

"Probably. The Knights of Passage are passing messages around their command, but initial signs are positive."

"What about the rest of the device?"

"Yeah, I'm calling Izaya in on that one. If he wants someone else to look at it, that's his-." No. Wait. "I'm calling Scott in on that one, given that escapology is his thing. And if he can't help, I'll-" I smile. "-get in touch with Orion and see what he thinks."

"I doubt that will improve your relationship with your brother, but I suppose that's your problem."

"Winding each other up is a very brotherly thing to do."

"Doesn't he want to kill you?"

"It's more of a ground state of being than a desire. Do you want to look at Yuga Khan's setup?"

"What part of me knowing nothing about Yuga Khan makes you think that I want to look at his defanged escape mechanism?"

"Because you've identified a hole in your knowledge and naturally want to correct the failure of your education?"

"Grayven, I'm overseeing the Orange Lantern Corps' war with the Reach. My powers are immense, but my throughput is limited. And if there's nothing else, I'd like to get back to my actual job."

"Yep, we're done. See you next time one of us needs something from the other. Mother Box."

BOOM!

"Must you?"

I smirk as I step through the boom tube, activating my aero-discs as I emerge in space near to the Knights of Passage base nearest… My new planet that needs a new name. Acquire census data and scan for discrepancies.

None found.

Hm.

BOOM!

The krendek homeworld. They'll pick me up in a minute or two, but that shouldn't matter. Acquire census data and scan for discrepancies.

Subject found.

Down we go, then.

The Spectre's new mortal krendek body glowers at me. "You."

"You have no grounds for complaint. I disarmed Yuga Khan's trap, saved your host and saved you, actually. And I'm not even going to kill you here, which is going to create extra work and risk for me and grant me absolutely no benefits. But hey, you got your own body and a way back into the Silver City."

"I will rejoin the Knights of Passage. I will fight evil and earn my place. Apokolips will burn."

"That's redundant. Apokolips has fire pits; it's always on fire. But- and I don't expect you to listen, but I thought that I'd try- do you think maybe it might be worth using this opportunity to learn the more peaceful virtues? You could. You don't have divinely appointed responsibilities any longer. And they didn't let you back in, no matter how many evildoers you horribly tortured to death."

He pulls his green rag cloak more tightly around him-. I fabricate some civilian clothes and deposit them next to him.

"Your words are the medium by which the poison in your soul escapes into the universe."

"Well, I tried. Mother Box, let's go home."

"Ping."

Is it because he realizes he can't really corrupt anyone if all forms of government are still trying to set themselves back up? Or are the other members of the Light leaning on him to not do anything for now?
It's more because he's realised that humans getting wiped out by something outside of the system would be very bad for him.

Yeah! After all, if he wants to make things worse all he has to do is sit back and let Orange Lantern keep going like he has been. 😂

Keep in mind, Smiley doesn't want to destroy human civilisation. He wants stagnation and corruption above all else. He doesn't care how advanced humanity gets as long as we keep being dicks to each other. Orange Lantern is a threat to Boss Smiley's plans, because he wants to make society less corrupt by making it more advanced and efficient. Smiley realized that Paul's goals are the opposite of his own, and that unlike many others who came before him, Paul may actually have a chance at succeeding in the long run. And why wouldn't he? After all, for better or for worse, Paul literally has the power to change the world on his finger. Hence why Smiley wants Paul either gone, or working for him.

Why does the specter and that Green lantern lord knight feel like best buddies even if they've never met?

Hinon nods to herself. "Oh, that's where he went."

Ayeadjujguh-!
Ah, the Angrish. That's when you know he's truly too frustrated to even properly swear. Though from the sound of it, Hinon wasn't aware of the Spectre's presence on-planet, even if she did know of his existence.

Let's not play 'exact words' here, granny. Did you have any suspicion of it?

"My grandfather built a monument to his victory out of destroyed ships and their surviving crews!"

"Grayven, do you have any concept of how many places Yuga Khan built things like that?"
...Maybe true, but how many of them were supposedly backdoors out of Source Wall imprisonment?

That brings me up short. It's not like Father liked talking about Grandfather, and most of the senior New Gods of his generation weren't really involved with him prior to his enwallment. I… Actually don't know how common it was, either from my own memories or Other Grayven's.
I wouldn't be surprised to find all of his old guard were promptly removed with extreme prejudice due to concerns about their loyalties.

"Nno? How many?"

This time she actually sighs. "Grayven, I was in a coma for millions of years. I didn't even know that your grandfather existed until recently."
...Honestly? That's fair. There literally aren't enough hours in the day for her to read even brief summaries of matters.

I frown. "I know… Scale can be an issue, but wasn't Apokolips in general worth a briefing? Given our relationship and the Anti-Life?"

"Those two things are the only reason why I know at all. Grayven, do you understand how large a galaxy is? And how long a million years?"
Something writers tend to struggle with, certainly. I suppose it's a side-effect of our monkey brains not being able to comprehend numbers that large.

"Yuga Khan was the most powerful being in the material universe."

"Was. I didn't look into him in any detail because as we both know, once a menace to civilisation ends up upon the Source Wall, they're no longer an active element in galactic civilisation, no matter how powerful they were before."
Unless it's the will of the Source that they somehow get free because it makes for an interesting story.

"The recording said otherwise."

"Yes, and while that was an uncharacteristically modest statement on the part of Yuga Khan, I'm not prepared to accept it as literal truth." But at least she's thinking about it. "Do you know of any other beings like the Spectre?"
Earth's got a whole cosmology of them, albeit not nearly so casually powerful.

"Jesus Christ."

She gives me an odd look, then nods. "Ah, you're being literal."
He did say he suspected the carpenter from Nazareth might have been a self-awakened New God... Or at least some manner of experience in the same by the Presence.

"Not that I expect you to have good records on him-"

"Good, because I don't."
No shame in that, Earth itself doesn't have the best records either.

"-but there aren't many things with that sort of link to the Source that aren't New Gods, and if Grandfather could use a New God then there'd be hundreds of escape routes." I smile faintly. "And Father would have spent more time working out how to disarm them."

"Do you intend to tell him?"
Not unless it can be done from a very, very long distance away.

"Go to Apokolips voluntarily? Heck no."

"It may be worth doing. If I recall the briefing correctly, his own father is the only thing that Darkseid fears. He may actually feel grateful."
His gratitude isn't much better than his ire, you know...

"Yes. Getting another piece of the Anti-Life Equation injected into my soul is exactly what I need."

"Yes? You have friends, now. If I understood your explanation of Equestrian magic correctly, that's all you need."
Yes, but running to them every time he gets an Anti-Life booboo smacks of carelessness and neediness.

Admittedly, the hard part of sending a fleet would be determining where in the universe Wilson even is. Or beside it, given that a system where a tiny sun, moon and stars orbits a planet would have attracted some interest without very good concealment from a certain Lord of Chaos.

"Probably. The Knights of Passage are passing messages around their command, but initial signs are positive."

"What about the rest of the device?"
Heh. I guess their command structure is somewhat distributed about their pilgrimage routes.

And Scot can more easily call in Izaya, given he has a better relationship with New Genesis than the maybe-son of the arch-enemy,

"Winding each other up is a very brotherly thing to do."

"Doesn't he want to kill you?"
He can try. That doesn't mean he would succeed.

"It's more of a ground state of being than a desire. Do you want to look at Yuga Khan's setup?"

"What part of me knowing nothing about Yuga Khan makes you think that I want to look at his defanged escape mechanism?"
Come on, granny. Not even the tiniest bit curious? Surely you've looked over the Orange Ring's scans of the place by now?

"Because you've identified a hole in your knowledge and naturally want to correct the failure of your education?"

"Grayven, I'm overseeing the Orange Lantern Corps' war with the Reach. My powers are immense, but my throughput is limited. And if there's nothing else, I'd like to get back to my actual job."
Huh. I suppose OL's better-organised Corps makes things much easier for his Hinon.

"Yep, we're done. See you next time one of us needs something from the other. Mother Box."

BOOM!

"Must you?"
Well, if you're going to be grumpy towards him... A little temporary ringing in the ears never hurt anyone, right?

I smirk as I step through the boom tube, activating my aero-discs as I emerge in space near to the Knights of Passage base nearest… My new planet that needs a new name. Acquire census data and scan for discrepancies.

None found.
Surprised the Knights never named it. Or would he prefer a name not tinged by tragedy and regret?

Hm.

BOOM!

The krendek homeworld. They'll pick me up in a minute or two, but that shouldn't matter. Acquire census data and scan for discrepancies.
It fits, as that was the race of his host.

Subject found.

Down we go, then
.

The Spectre's new mortal krendek body glowers at me. "You."
And there's the fellow himself. Probably a very pale specimen, I bet.

"You have no grounds for complaint. I disarmed Yuga Khan's trap, saved your host and saved you, actually. And I'm not even going to kill you here, which is going to create extra work and risk for me and grant me absolutely no benefits. But hey, you got your own body and a way back into the Silver City."
No extra work right now. In true Renegade fashion, that will come a long time from now, probably at the worst possible time for him.

Sadly, most Angels like him don't have much room in their soul-structures for anything but the Word that defines them. And we've seen what happens when the Spectre is forced to embody Redemption during Hal Jordan's tenure. It did not end well.

He pulls his green rag cloak more tightly around him-. I fabricate some civilian clothes and deposit them next to him.

"Your words are the medium by which the poison in your soul escapes into the universe."
Such a gloomy fellow. Literally unable to see the good in anyone for the sins.

"Well, I tried. Mother Box, let's go home."

"Ping."
"About time. This whole affair has been rather annoying." If he doesn't want to listen, then you can't force him to... Not without breaking some fundamental aspects of his nature.

About how I expected it to go, really. The Renegade can't do much more than yell at her, given how vital she is to the anti-Reach war efforts. As for the Spectre, if he embodies Vengeance so intently, it's no surprise he won't consider softer paths such as redemption, except via suffering. At least now the Renegade can go get some consolation smooches from Luna or something... 😘
