With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Maybe this episode will be about her getting used to the ring.

My bet's on the Life Entity. Week=7=Colors of the Emotional Spectrum, 3 on Earth right now, we haven't seen any sign of red lanterns in Paragon but everyone else is somewhat accounted for, so assembling a White Ring the 'traditional' way may be in the cards.

That would mean that he never improved his kingdom, and that is at been stuck at a communist dictatorship with draconian laws for decades. That would be an example of him utterly failing to actually uplift the society.

No, it wouldn't. If he massively improved their tech level and standard of living, it wouldn't necessarily reduce the harshness of the government. Sinestro was equally draconian on Korugar at a very high level of technology.

You have a warped view of what "uplift" means. It means to make things better, not more technologically advanced.

Or it could mean that he succeeded in uplifting his society, but started out doing that with some brutal methods.

So at the point things stand, LP is either evil or incompetent?

Or he's a good and competent guy.

Who could have guessed? :D

Oh, right. :p

Paul guessed that she would be a good fit for a blue ring after he rescued her. He just didn't have one.

Both would be my guess.

After all, he contracted with the Ancients Spirits of Evil, and a key word in that Title is Evil.

And Paul once merged with the embodiment of avarice, and yet he somehow managed to stay a good and highly competent guy.

You have a warped view of what "uplift" means. It means to make things better, not more technologically advanced.

It is also possible that he stopped using his more brutal methods on Thundera now, because civilization can function without such methods.

Earth Bet civilization is slowly falling down the toilet and some brutal methods may be necessary to make it so that it has even a small chance of success in surviving.

And improving tech can make a place better.

Things like advanced medicine and agriculture by way of tech would make things better.

None of what is actually causing earth bet civilization to die can be laid at the feat of random criminal gangs. He isn't going after the endbringers or actual threats. He isn't addressing the water crisis, the damage done from endbringers, or anything. He is rearranging the decks on the titanic because trying to rub in how superior his methods are gives him a hard on the size of the ophidian.

"Oh?" Alan smiles at Lantern Koriand'r. "I hadn't realise you spoke English."
Ha, she was probably capable of speaking English within five minutes of meeting OL. Depending on how soon she could get skin contact.

"Yes!" Koriand'r is.. just about keeping herself from jumping up and down in excitement. Which is probably just as well, because her top doesn't look very supportive and Alan's not a young man. "Tamaraneans can learn languages by touching people!"

"Ah." Alan frowns in puzzlement. "How does that work?"

"I have no idea!"
She's just so... Infectious, isn't she? She feels like that other new Blue Lantern YJ SI, and it's lovely.

Alan raises an eyebrow in my direction, but I just shake my head as well.

"My best guess is that it's a modification the psions made to X'Hal so that they wouldn't have to learn her language, but I've got no idea how it operates."
Some kind of specialised telepathic link that specifically requires skin contact? I wouldn't be surprised if it was intended as some form of conditioning tool too.

I've got Lantern Koriand'r's ring in my pocket, along with former Lantern Comic King's. I suppose that instead of keeping it to issue to someone else I could just give it to Koriand'r to extend her battery life-. No, no, Komand'r would hate that, and the two of them are cooperating reasonably well at the moment.
Yeah, I don't think Komy would appreciate the apparent favouritism. Even if you didn't mean it like that, she'd probably see it that way. Now, if you gave it to her, she'd probably be fine with it.

"Guess we.. might as well get started."

Alan gently removes his ring from his middle left finger and hesitantly hold it out to her.
Heh. Feels like something else, doesn't it, Alan?

"Now, be careful. I know-"

Koriand'r doesn't grab it, but I can see the effort it's taking.
Amazed she isn't vibrating with glee and anticipation... Then again, that's be kind of obvious...;)

"-that you're used to using an orange ring, but from what I can tell it's a whole lot less… Direct, I guess."

He takes a breath. Understandable, really. I think this is the first time he'll have been without it on since I gave it to him. And while he might accept death as an old man, I imagine that having your vitality renewed encourages a person to reconsider the matter.
Don't worry, Alan, you've got a few more years in you now. And this is only a loan. Unless something comes up.

"But flying's pretty intuitive, so-" He offers her his ring. "-if you wanna take it for a spin, go right ahea-"

Koriand'r plucks it from his hand and slides it onto her left ring finger, a wave of blue flowing over her outfit and replacing the orange sigil with a blue one.
Much nicer than the orange. She certainly looks better in blue, at least. A natural contrast...

"-d."

Koriand'r beams excitedly as she floats into the air."
Safe to assume she's actually using the ring for flight here. After all, she can fly without it...

Alan nods. "You seem to be getting the hang of-"

Koriand'r turns her head towards the western horizon and then she's gone.
Like a kid with a new bike. If she isn't back by dark, worry.

"-things…" Alan turns to the west and watches the glowing trail. "Is she coming back?"

"Yes, but I suppose that answers the question of which colour suits her best."
Ultimately, the only orange she needs is her skin colour.

"You sure you can't get her another blue ring?"

"Sure? No. I'll definitely be asking Kalmin about it after we're finished, but…" Hm. "You know that Lanterns are perfectly capable of making new-"
Kalmin: "Ugh, another one of those things? Fiiiine."

He's shaking his head.

"-rings, right?"
Is Alan capable of feeling Hope that strongly for that long, though? Especially without enlightenment,

"I don't… Can Gardner do that?"

"I… Don't know, actually. I haven't asked."
If he could, everyone would know about it. He'd be crowing his 'victory' over Jordan to the heavens.

"He doesn't seem like the sort of fellow who'd be slow to tell you if he'd learned to do something he thinks you can't do." He frowns slightly. "You can't, right?"

"I haven't yet. I probably can. But… I can get as many orange power rings as I want, and I can't make a new ring without already having a ring. Making a lantern is useful because I can do it when I have some charge but don't have access to my personal lantern, which is.. why I learned to make one."
And I doubt anyone's considered implementing some kind of deputy ring protocol. Too... New 52... GL comics.

"So you can't coach me."

I shrug. "Sorry."

"Oh, no. I could be an interesting change of pace. You know, back in the forties, Ted asked me how my ring worked. I guess he thought I made it myself."
To be honest, it was simple enough back then, it probably could have seemed like a magic artifact.

I frown. "Ted Grant, or-."

Alan shakes his head. "No, no, Knight. I let him run a few tests, but we didn't really learn anything." He shakes his head. "After that, I just figured it was beyond human science."
Although... Ted did create the Cosmic Rod, which some continuities treat like a power ring of sorts...

"And now?"

"I'm only just getting back into this whole thing. Kinda awkward asking Diana to explain how the League's computer equipment works."
Don't worry, Alan, most older people feel that way about 'newfangled' technology...

"Why?"

"When she first came to the US, Jay and I ended up showing her how a whole lot of things worked. She's nice about it, but I can tell she's enjoying the role reversal."
I'll bet. I wonder how many times they pranked her back then?

"I thought that was Major Trevor's job?"

"He was her official… Liaison, but I think half the reason for that was because the army didn't know if everyone else on Themyscira was as strong as her so they wanted to be a bit careful. He sure couldn't go with her on mission or train with her or anything." He looks away for a moment. "Hah!"
Yeah, probably why their relationship didn't work out. Kind of uneven power balance.

"What?"

"Oh, I just remembered the first time Hank had a practice bout with her. He got his-" Alan points to his right forearm. "-arm bent in half. Diana was horrified because she didn't know it was a prosthetic."
Man, that would have been a sight.

"Was he alright?"

"Oh, he made a joke out of it! Got hold of a regular uniform and started pranking some of the…" He glances down, his smile fading slightly. "Some of the kids. Pretending it was his real arm."

Yeah. The thing about hitting ninety is that a good few of 'the kids' have probably predeceased you.
The joy of outliving all your old buddies. Even Jay isn't a spring chicken himself. Still, a little hope goes a long way.

"Oh, hey, are you alright about the big.. starfish thing? Guy said he was going to talk to you…"

"I'm not shy about killing people who deserve it. But I'd rather not kill people when there's a reasonable alternative, and I really don't want to kill someone-. Something that doesn't deserve it." I shake my head. "With the Star Conquerors, I've seen their records. I know what they do and how dangerous they are. But the Mother Star didn't even seem that hostile. I can't reconcile the desires I saw with their recorded behaviour, and that… That makes me uncomfortable that it died on my mission."
Seeing the lights go out would probably hurt, yes. I expect that'll haunt him for a while.

"So what did it want?"

"In the short term it wanted dreams to feed on. Or.. possibly watch or experience. I'm not sure. I mean, it was capable of complex behaviour… I don't even really know why the Star Hunters were digging it out. And I don't really think that the Green Lantern Corps is going to continue with an investigation."
It's dead, what's to investigate? That's probably their rationale...

"So? You want to go to Oa and talk to them about that?"

"No. It's not worth it just because I'd like a 'clean' ending. If we follow up with-."
Sometimes, you need to do things. You may not think you need to, you may not want to, but sometimes, they can make you feel better for doing them. It's part of adulthood.

A beaming Lantern Koriand'r appears, carrying three large teddy bears and a bicycle.

"I like this ring very much!"
...Yeah, I think she likes it. OL, get on that Blue set, now. We need more Blue Lantern Koriand'r, stat!

I'm not even going to ask about the teddy bears, much less the bicycle. Still, that's another project for OL to get working on. One of many, I expect we'll see him going around checking in on.
As for the Worm stuff... Can we please just let it rest? Yes, Lord Protector's coming in like a brick in a sock. We know, the Worm-verse always gets worse. Let's leave the power-level wankery to SV and relax before someone gets really red-ring-tier angry? We'll see what happens later.

Not sure if correct or you meant 'missions'...

The criminals aren't exactly making things better for Earth Bet civilization, and he may deal with those other issues once he's dealt with the worst criminal offenders. The criminals are just the simplest and easiest to deal with right now.

Ha, she was probably capable of speaking English within five minutes of meeting OL. Depending on how soon she could get skin contact.

She actually got knowledge of English from prince Karras, the noble she was supposed to marry and the one that kissed OL when they first met.:D

She's just so... Infectious, isn't she? She feels like that other new Blue Lantern YJ SI, and it's lovely.

If you're talking about the one from 'I'm Blue' then yes, yes she is.

Now I really wanna see those two meet.

Adara, embodiment of Hope, might take a shine to Starfire for better or worse. Troubling.

I'd say it would be for the better.

Adara is a sweetheart compared to the other embodiments.

An additional 2 minutes of research would bring up the endbringer truce and the fact that the endbringers are such a big threat that allowing the existence of supervillains just to have additional bodies to throw at them is the point where they are at.

Adara is a sweetheart compared to the other embodiments.

I mean, I'm pretty sure it would still fuck Koriand'r up to merge with the hopes and dreams of the entire universe, it's just that instead of bunkering down and going "fulfill the desires of those I care about and facilitate my desires in ways consistent with the before", she would immediately start flying around the universe solving problems, pulling a veritable Scion (tbf, she would probably be able to prioritize a little bit based on what hopes are the strongest and hoped by the most people, but still).

Probably not.

OL spent some time mastering his ring and the orange light before he merged with the Ophidian, so if Kori also does that then I'd say it's a good bet that she may end up like Paul, enlightened and with a new best friend in the Hope Entity.

PDV: And he has years and possibly decades of practice being a necessary dictator handing out draconian justice, and it working. Of course when he enters another world and finds it to be even more of a mess - technologically more advanced, but a bigger mess nonetheless - he isn't going to look too hard for alternatives.

That would mean that he never improved his kingdom, and that is at been stuck at a communist dictatorship with draconian laws for decades. That would be an example of him utterly failing to actually uplift the society.
Darko: Or it could mean that he succeeded in uplifting his society, but started out doing that with some brutal methods.

Darko, at least pay attention to what I am replying to. As is, the pro-LP side has a bunch of conflicting reasoning where some of his actions can possibly be excused but not all of them.

I am.

You said that he never improved his society because he used draconian laws.

I said that he may have started out using such laws, but stopped using them when his society no longer required them, even if he used such laws for decades.

Now that he's in a world where society is falling apart he may view it as necessary to use his draconian methods to solve some of the problems, but would stop using such methods when they are no longer required.

Only down side to this Kori? She didn't learn English by kissing Dick.

Think that's more of a downside for him.:D

Don't know how to leave a link, sorry.

You can just click on the young justice tag at the top and look for a story titled 'I'm Blue'. It should be at the very top.

That or you can just search for the authors name, Zarori, on google.

Coincidentally, another long running DC fanfic has recently given their version of Starfire a blue ring. It's called I want to play a Game. It can also be found in SV. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see another good Lantern fanfic, please check it out. Also, that Starfire legitimately owns the blue ring; I hope this one can get one as well and help start up a Blue Lantern Corps. Side note, is there a chance of any version of Paul helping to create a Corps that is made up of different colors like in I want to play a Game?

If Paul keeps on doing some of the things he is doing now, like getting Kori a blue ring, then he may just make more than one Corps.

The same goes with renegade when he had that red ring made.

And Paul once merged with the embodiment of avarice, and yet he somehow managed to stay a good and highly competent guy.
Good? I guess I will give you that.

But Competent? I mean, maybe if you had said skilled I would agree. But Paul flits from one shiny thing to another far to much to be considered competent.

27.2 has Number Man estimate that in 14 years, the max time for Scion going off according to Dinahs precog, theyd have anywhere between 53% to 2% of the available forces they had when Jack set him off so considered it happening when it did a best case scenario.

Okay, fair enough. However, those numbers are derived from an analysis done on Earth Bet as it is in canon. If LP actually sticks around, his presence would likely mitigate the damage done by the threats Number Man listed.

If his previous rational was being brutal because he had to be,

His brutality here can still fit into that mindset. The strength of a yellow lantern's constructs is influenced by fear, by casually massacring some of the more powerful capes in the city with a lot of flash and spectacle, he ensures that others in the future will be more afraid of him than they otherwise would be.

He isn't addressing the water crisis, the damage done from endbringers, or anything

Fixing those sorts of things would be more of a long-term project. Dealing with the crime problem is a fairly long-term project too, but he only really needs to deal with some of the bigger players, the ones like Lung who local law enforcement struggles to deal with. Take care of enough of them, and the police and PRT can get a grip on the rest. He could then use the publicity from this to increase his profile and leverage that to help him in endeavours like providing drinking water and revitalizing the economy.

Button at the top of the reply box, same section as the image, video, and insert table buttons. Button for links looks like a couple of links of chain.

His battle record and skill in wielding his ring, plus his wins against powerful opponents proves that he is highly competent.
