With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Any time I read an absolute statement like that I can't help but think 'Future!Zoat will look back at this point in a few years and say "It's at this point he knew, he fucked up" '
Please. I won't even remember that I said it in a couple of years.

About half this thread will, but I won't.

I swear by all fourteen gods of Krypton that it will never come up in this story, but I assume that a bisexual would be rendered asexual.

Ok, now what if you used it on a kryptonian with a sexual attraction to something unrelated to gender, such as either inanimate objects or to a metaphysical concept?

For example, what about a sadist or masochist?

Now, we were having what was nearly a productive conversation. I wasn't looking forwards to convincing Lantern Coutara to go along with it, but we were working towards something that would both basically satisfy all parties, ensure that Lantern Yat had as stable an upbringing as possible and allowed him to leave if it was as bad as I suspect that it was. And it would also preserve my relationship with the Justice League by not get me branded a child kidnapper.

Now, though? Flip that. Lantern Yat stays where he is and the Daxamites go back without their ship. You start a fight during a negotiation and you go home with nothing.

"What-?"

To be fair, Ken Lee looks like he has no idea what's going on. But he's got kryptonian super powers, and I can see where his clothes are tight around his muscles because he's bulked out since leaving his home system. I detonate my lead carbonate pouches with a thought, dust filling the air. His environmental shield activates immediately, though I don't know for certain if that's because of the dust or because that heat vision blast punctured the hull. Unfortunately for him, I know that exact model of environmental shield because I reviewed them while making one for Superman, which means that if I hit it with an electromagnetic pulse like that-

There's a quiet pfz sound as the generator overloads and the shield fails.

"Huh-?"

-then he's going to breathe a lungful of some material that's very bad for him.

"Sit down, shut up, don't move! I-."

"You can't-!"

His eyes flicker red as he balls his right fist, then they dim and his muscles shake. I hear him gasp, an audible yearning for air that for some reason just isn't getting to his lungs. I know what kryptonite does to kryptonians on a cellular level, but I've never really seen exactly what radiation obstruction does to a daxamite.

"What did you do?"

"Fatally poisoned you. I'll fix it before you die-" He collapses to the ground, arms wrapped around his chest. "-but stay down." I fly up towards the meeting room, power armour and construct armour forming around my body. "Arsenal, keep talking."

"Does our interdiction system stop boom tubes?"

"Not even slightly."

Another heat vision shot slashes across the garden, but this time I block it with a construct shield. In the meeting room itself, John has the priest contained in some sort of safe construct that isn't reacting at all to his repeated blows. Arisia is shielding him as he focuses on it while Lantern Coutara is dodging and ducking as Cara Yat smashes up the place with her flailing.

And then my ring shimmers again.

Yes?

Illustres, Daxamites are flying from the ship.

"Understood." Ugh, if they're all got environmental shields then dumping lead in their path won't do anything other than confusing them. On the other hand, E.M.P.ing them in space and then dosing them would probably kill them. "Disrupt their environmental shields with electromagnetic radiation and then throw lead carbonate powder at them. Don't get close enough for them to touch you. Remember they can shoot heat rays out of their eyes. If they grab part of you-"

I wince as a glancing hit from Cara Yat causes Lantern Coutara to hit the metal wall hard enough to crater it. Her armour construct takes it, but fails a moment later.

"-cut if off and flee. Understand?"

Yes, Illustres.

End.

Cara Yat looks around, spotting her son ducking behind Lantern Stewart. "Sodam! Come here at once!"

Now-.

Lantern Yat gives his natural mother both eyeballs. On full power. You don't see Superman do that very often. No thin red beams of barely visible light, no, the actual core of the ray looks white, while there's enough light scatter from the energy output that the red area is significantly wider than his actual eyes. And unlike her son, Cara Yat isn't used to fighting at this level of power and she also hasn't had enough time to build up the sort of resistance that Superman has.

"YRAAAGH!"

The beam hits her face, flesh burning or outright evaporating, fat melting and popping as it slashes downwards, doing the same to her chest. I'd be concerned about her dying if I cared about her at all, but she's still his mother.

"Lantern Yat, cease! Now!"

The beam cuts out and he shudders, blinking repeatedly in an instinctive response to having completely dry eyes. Then he-.

"You didn't do anything wrong." I fly over to his mother… Yeah, that's a mess. Her eyes are both still there but the right one is cooked, the left side of her jaw bone is blackened and there's smoke rising from her lungs through the hole in her upper chest. "But you've done enough. Check Lantern Coutara."

He blinks again, head jerk to where his adopted mother -and we should probably formalise that- is picking herself up and flying over to her.

"U-uh."

I crouch down, scanning Cara Yat. Hm. She could probably still fly like this, and perhaps fight, but that's so counterintuitive that I doubt that she's going to try it. These injuries are severe, but near-kryptonian physiology means that she'll probably heal up eventually.

I fabricate a small pile of lead carbonate powder in my right hand, show it to her one functional eye, then pour it into her chest cavity.

"So, you're dying. You attacked my people. Explain yourself, or I chuck you out an airlock."

"Uuhhh."

"I'm wearing a power ring. If you try to communicate, I'll understand it. Lantern Yat, how is Lantern Coutara?"

"She's okay! Ah, sir!"

"Does she have any injuries that require further treatment?"

"Mum, do-? No, she doesn't!"

"Lantern Stewart, do you need help?"

"If you could make this guy stop trying to get out, that would be great."

I dump a pile of lead carbonate on top of the construct, then generate an electromagnetic pulse generator construct. "Drop it."

"I don't wanna kill him."

"We just need to move him to somewhere with a red sun, then we can get it out of his body. He'll just be crippled until then."

"Just put up a radiation filter-."

"That won't do anything about the power he's already absorbed. He could just fly through it."

He sighs. "Fine. Ready?"

I nod, his construct vanishes, and-

Pfz.

"Ugh."

-he's no longer an issue.

I look down at Cara Yat again, but what's left of her jaw is locked together. I raise my ring my to my ear.

"Sorry about that, Arsenal. What have you found?"

Im sorry, what boom tubes was Arsenal talking about?

Are there new gods involved with the Yat custody dispute?

I suspect it would have been a very uneasy discussion anyway, Coutara wouldn't trust the Daxamites as far as she could throw one without her Ring, and the Daxamites are, well, Daxamites.

Now, though? Flip that. Lantern Yat stays where he is and the Daxamites go back without their ship. You start a fight during a negotiation and you go home with nothing.

"What-?"
Hell, put up enough resistance, he'll ship them home in pieces until he can be bothered to patch them up at Daxam.

To be fair, Ken Lee looks like he has no idea what's going on. But he's got kryptonian super powers, and I can see where his clothes are tight around his muscles because he's bulked out since leaving his home system. Handy, but it goes to show they're still using the same tech as Krypton used to have. Weaknesses and all.

There's a quiet pfz sound as the generator overloads and the shield fails.

"Huh-?"

-then he's going to breathe a lungful of some material that's very bad for him.
Kinda feels bad, he's not really a bad guy in all this. Just caught up in an unlucky situation and trying to do his job...

"Sit down, shut up, don't move! I-."

"You can't-!"
To pull a note from Captain America's playbook: "Son... Just don't."

And apparently it's something like an asthma attack. Or the severe allergic reaction it basically is.

"What did you do?"

"Fatally poisoned you. I'll fix it before you die-" He collapses to the ground, arms wrapped around his chest. "-but stay down." I fly up towards the meeting room, power armour and construct armour forming around my body. "Arsenal, keep talking."
Let's hope he remembers that promise in all the fuss. I take it it's not super-instantly fatal, but still not fun.

"Does our interdiction system stop boom tubes?"

"Not even slightly."
Which isn't great. But The kind of resources you would need to stop one is probably beyond Earth's ability right now.

Not gonna break John's Will with kryptonian strength, that's for sure.

And then my ring shimmers again.

Yes?

Illustres, Daxamites are flying from the ship.
Oh, hell. If they're coming from the edge of the system, it'll take a while for them to arrive, though.

If they grab part of you-"
A necessary risk, I guess. But if they reach the station, that's even more damage it'll suffer.

I wince as a glancing hit from Cara Yat causes Lantern Coutara to hit the metal wall hard enough to crater it. Her armour construct takes it, but fails a moment later.

"-cut if off and flee. Understand?"
That anger Coutara's feeling has to be hurting her combat ability, even if she can focus hard on wanting to keep Sodam safe....

Yes, Illustres.

End.

Cara Yat looks around, spotting her son ducking behind Lantern Stewart. "Sodam! Come here at once!"

Now-.
Like hell he's gonna listen to you, miss bad mommie.

Well, he probably doesn't use them that often, and his adrenaline's pumping hard. is it any wonder he's letting loose this much?

"YRAAAGH!"

The beam hits her face, flesh burning or outright evaporating, fat melting and popping as it slashes downwards, doing the same to her chest. I'd be concerned about her dying if I cared about her at all, but she's still his mother.
Let's not let Sodam murder his own family members, though.

"Lantern Yat, cease! Now!"

The beam cuts out and he shudders, blinking repeatedly in an instinctive response to having completely dry eyes. Then he-.
Not surprised they're dry, since the emitted heat would have evaporated any tears his body was trying to produce.

Stood up to that much heat fairly well, honestly. If she'd hit an unshielded Coutara with a blast like that, Coutara would be an ashen silhouette.

He blinks again, head jerk to where his adopted mother -and we should probably formalise that- is picking herself up and flying over to her.

"U-uh."
Using his Ring? Guess he ran his reserves a little too hard to use Kryptonian flight.

I crouch down, scanning Cara Yat. Hm. She could probably still fly like this, and perhaps fight, but that's so counterintuitive that I doubt that she's going to try it. These injuries are severe, but near-kryptonian physiology means that she'll probably heal up eventually.
At the least, mild treatment with a purple ray will stop her from dying outright. Being patched up in full? She's gonna have to earn that.

I fabricate a small pile of lead carbonate powder in my right hand, show it to her one functional eye, then pour it into her chest cavity.

"So, you're dying. You attacked my people. Explain yourself, or I chuck you out an airlock."
Not that he's actually going to, but let her think that for now.

"Uuhhh."

"I'm wearing a power ring. If you try to communicate, I'll understand it. Lantern Yat, how is Lantern Coutara?"
Yeah, not hard to work out what happened, really. The plan she had is going to be a bit more interesting to learn.

"She's okay! Ah, sir!"

"Does she have any injuries that require further treatment?"
And given that he's very focused on her health right now, I figure Sodam would patch her up in an instant if he could want it enough.

"Mum, do-? No, she doesn't!"

"Lantern Stewart, do you need help?"
Telling, isn't it? He called her 'mum' but Cara, he practically recoiled from and then laser-eyed her in the face...

"If you could make this guy stop trying to get out, that would be great."

I dump a pile of lead carbonate on top of the construct, then generate an electromagnetic pulse generator construct. "Drop it."
Quickly, please, since every second the priest is aware of it is a long time for him to work out how to avoid it.

"I don't wanna kill him."

"We just need to move him to somewhere with a red sun, then we can get it out of his body. He'll just be crippled until then."
Admittedly, they'll have to do it reasonably quick to prevent any long-term damage, but OL isn't feeling too charitable right now...

"Just put up a radiation filter-."

"That won't do anything about the power he's already absorbed. He could just fly through it."
And it can take a lot to force a Kryptonian to drain their cells dry.

He sighs. "Fine. Ready?"

I nod, his construct vanishes, and-
Man, there's going to be so much paperwork about this...

Pfz.

"Ugh."

-he's no longer an issue.
Such a non-issue he gets two words of description.

I look down at Cara Yat again, but what's left of her jaw is locked together. I raise my ring my to my ear.

"Sorry about that, Arsenal. What have you found?"
Well, she's not talking anytime soon, I guess...

Hopefully things aren't too bad on Daxam, and Johnnie isn't on the run after getting outed. Because that seems like the most likely reason for Roy to call OL like this. That or a Daxamite fleet setting off or something. And there's still the question of why Cara went to these lengths to get Sodam back. Why is he so important? 🤔

Couldn't Paul just blast them with artificial red sunlight like he did last time? Or is that slated for retcon-city?

Well.

I'd be worried that Lantern Coutara attacked first - just to generate additional drama - but even the green lanterns are fighting the Daxamites specifically, and it takes a lot to get sense through their heads.

I'll admit that - for reasons of personal bias due to my own experience - I found Sodom Yat's actions immensely cathartic. Thank you for writing this, Mr Zoat. It's something that can't exist in real life, but it's a relief to be able to imagine it all the same.
