With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Paul is blessed by Eris, the goddess of chaos. And Discord is sorta ok working with graven. I guess chaos beinf automatically equivalent to evil or entropy are setting specific.
Chaos is the ultimate Eldritch being in Sailor Moon...

It's DC equilivant would be The Great Darkness, an existence so far above everything else in existence that there is nothing above it outside of The Source.

Singularity beam.

In a stretched out second I see her eyes widen a little before she draws her right hand across her face and… Batters the graviton beam away. Great, dark energy can do just about anything, and she's got a planet's worth to work with. Or maybe it's a magic thing, don't know.
Real talk, does the singularity beam ever work ? You'd think that firing a small black hole at people would be at least somewhat effective, except that I struggle to remember a single time when it wasn't countered or outright ignored.

Thank you, corrected.

Discord wasted an episode mostly just to mock Grayven.

I think it worked against the Reach a couple of times.

Yup, and Metalia is an incarnation of Chaos, basically a lesser piece of it that ended up on Earth for whatever reason, presumably sent there to target Sailor Moon in an attempt to nip that future threat in the bud.

Real talk, does the singularity beam ever work ? You'd think that firing a small black hole at people would be at least somewhat effective, except that I struggle to remember a single time when it wasn't countered or outright ignored.
The singularity beam suffers from the narrative issue of being an instant-win if it ever works, with very little room for anything less. So if it works then the fight is just instantly over which is unsatisfying, so it usually doesn't work.

Singularity Beam is OL's "Spirit Bomb".
It sits right at the farthest edge of the fourth logarithmic of power levels.

Fucked the sea Titan physical form real good, but didn't stop it, so I dunno where would stand in your scale.

I'm waiting for the moment where at least two Paul's get to team up and get along. Have a nice discussion and share ideas…. Or just hate each other for petty reasons…..

Out of curiosity I decided to look into all the previous firings of the beam singularity projector and categorise them by whether they succeeded, failed, or partly succeeded in severely injuring the target. I counted instances in which it was fired multiple times against the same target, or on multiple targets that were similar (such as in fleet battles) as one instance. I do not count instances where a singularity projector is considered as an option but decided against.

Assuming I haven't missed any, it has been used 22 times. There were 10 successes, 10 failures, and 2 partial successes, for approximately 45.5% successes, 45.5% failures, and 9.1% partial successes.

This would seem to indicate that the singularity projector actually has a fairly high success rate. However, it's important to note that the success rate changes drastically if we separate the data by whether or not the target was humanoid.

14 uses (approx. 63.6%) were against humanoid targets, and there were 2 successes (14.3%), 10 failures (71.4%), and 2 partial successes (14.3%).
8 uses (approx. 36.4%) were against spacecraft or stations, and 100% of these uses were successful.

Notably, both of the successes against humanoids were when it was fired at nameless elves (a sheeda warrior, and a bunch of Laundry Files elven knights).

For a list of every instance I counted, see below.

Oceanus: Partial Success. It injured/stunned him, seemingly giving Poseidon an opening to attack. First ever use. It was previously considered against the Huntsman, but was deemed to cost too much power.

Mordru: Failure. No effect due to magic.

Oh El: Failure. Dodged. Fired by the First Citadelian. I'd forgotten this fight.

Renegade: Partial Success. It punched a hole through his torso, but didn't seem to significantly impede his ability to fight. Fired by the First Citadelian. Not explicitly a beam singularity from what I could tell, but with it being a black beam fired by a telekine who manipulates space and creates black holes, I imagine it is essentially the same thing.

First Citadelian (boosted by Captain Comet): Failure. No effect due to telekinetic spatial manipulation.

Gravity disruptor in Ranx: Success.

Vandal Savage: Failure. No effect due to temporal displacement. May have caused the Toba catastrophe in that timeline.

Devlos Ungol: Failure. No effect due to Anti-Monitor-derived armour.

Devlos Ungol's research station: Success. Cut the station in half to destroy the transition jammer.

Krona: Failure. No effect due to power ring spatial manipulation?

Sheeda warrior on Witchworld: Success.

Juluuni Reach fleet: Success.

Reach Scarab: Failure. Deflected by spatial defences.

Reach ships: Success.

Grayven: Failure. Intercepted by Omega beam.

Dominator capital ship: Success.

Reach dreadnought: Success.

Laundry Files elves: Success.

Laundry Files elf artillery palanquin: Failure. Deflected by magic.

Reach station: Success.

Apophis' fleet: Success.

Queen Metalia: Failure. Deflected by magic/dark energy.

Well there was the big crossover where OL worked with Time Trapaul.

A bit opposite of what you suggest but you randomly got me thinking about Grayven meting Tangseid. Doubt they'd get along.

That's only when Sailor Moon is still alive to bring them back.
I'm not familiar with the series but I do remember the Silver Crystal being mentioned in this story. While I also remember you saying that only Usagi can truly use it to its fullest extent as a deus ex machina, is it truly impossible for it to help bring them back in this circumstance? Is this universe doomed to be grimdark forever now?

Unless Mr Zoat changes how things work in the universe, yes.

The Sailor Scouts don't even operate under normal resurrection rules because you need to restore their Star Seed to actually bring them back.

Petals fall as the three of us appear inside D Point.

"Uh?"

Some sort of youma polar bear stares at us in confusion. I could let Venus blast it and preserve plausible deniability-

I raise my right arm and throw a black-green blade, which flies across the room and embeds itself in the creature's forehead. It stares forwards, shaking as its mind adapts to the fact that the brain sustaining it can't any longer, and then it collapses to the ground.

-but I don't.

Yesterday, I'd probably have found that funny. Yesterday, when I was Kunzite, most powerful of the Heavenly Kings. One of the most powerful people on Earth. And now…

Zoisite… No, Ao, nods at me and smiles uncertainly before vanishing in a rain of petals. It's… Funny. We only met after Beryl restored our memories. Kunzite and Zoisite were lovers in-. Our past lives. Neither of us really hesitated to resume their relationship, but now we've regained the memories of our current lives…

I want to stay together, I do, but it's… Awkward. How much of what we feel comes from lives we didn't live, thoughts that aren't our own. I haven't been Sebastián Marín for years. I barely remember what it felt like-.

"Come on!"

Grey light crackles around my body as I reform my defensive shield, and then I run after Sailor Venus. There aren't many youma in D Point, because why would there be? Beryl… Metalia, had no real use for them, not after the Sailor Guardians were…

Killed.

Just children, really. That damned cat didn't even give them their past life memories back.

There's nothing to do here, no one who can do a damn thing to protect it from… She could stop Ao teleporting us in easily-. So this could be a trap, or Orange Lantern 2 is holding her attention…

Or she just doesn't care.

That's more likely.

"Can you feel it? If the crystal-."

"Yes!" A luckless puffin youma walks around the corner ahead of us and-. Venus throws her sword-chain and slices off its head just before my dagger reaches it. "It feels-. Wrong!"

"Of course it feels wrong. Metalia's using it to pollute the entire planet with dark energy. You're attuned to it."

"Do you know why my compact is taking longer to recharge?"

I frown. "Yes. You don't?"

She glances back at me, clearly annoyed. "No! How would I?"

No, that-. "Each of the Sailor Guardians had a castle on their world. When Beryl corrupted the Crystal, she fed enough dark energy into it to make it flow back into their control systems. I don't know exactly how much damage it caused, but she boasted about it completely destroying the fortresses. Any equipment your previous incarnation stored there will have been destroyed, and anything you have which relied on them to work will gradually fail."

"Castle on other worlds?"

"Why did you think you were called 'Sailor Venus'?"

"After the goddess?"

"The Romans didn't start worshipping Venus until millennia after Metalia destroyed the Moon Kingdom. They named their gods after our-. The Moon Kingdom's names for the planets."

"Was Venus inhabited?"

What? "Is this really important?"

"I didn't get the past life memories you did. I've only been doing this for a couple of years." We slow down as we reach the heavy door leading to what used to be Beryl's throne room. "If we're going to die, I'd like to know what we're dying for."

"Yes, all the worlds of this system used to be inhabited. I don't know why they're not today. Kunzite died during the fighting between Earth and the moon. I occasionally wondered if the other planets were still inhabited and avoided Earth because they remembered Beryl."

"I think NASA would have spotted that."

"They could be hiding with magic. We-. They, used to use it for a lot of things."

"What-?"

I stride up to the door and run dark energy through it in my usual pattern. "If you want to know more, make sure that we win. Anyone waiting for you?"

"My parents, but… My boyfriend is… Probably here somewhere."

I wasn't sure, but I'm not surprised. "The Lantern?"

The door unlocks with a clank, and then starts to open. Venus nods, a little guiltily, but it's not like that's important now. "We thought we were the only superheroes in the world. I didn't even know that the other Guardians existed until… It was too late."

"If there's any chance to free him, it's with the Crystal. I can't use it. It must be you."

"Right."

The door opens wide, and we strike in, weapons and magic at the ready-.

"Hello, Kunzite."

I stare at the green-skinned man standing guard by the plinth over which the Silver Crystal floats. He glances our way for a moment, and then goes back to admiring it.

"Jadeite. I thought you were dead."

"No. The crystal magnified the affect of the dark energy upon me. I understand Queen Metalia's will better, now. No more weakness. No more distraction. No more ego. Just her will to my action."

I frown, memories from two lifetimes intruding, my brother in arms, the… Bitter, violent monster he became-. We all became. Now… I didn't even think to ask his name in this life.

"Jadeite, we can remove the dark energy. You could-."

"Why would I want to remove it?" He turns away from the plinth and starts walking towards us. "I feel a wonderful completeness now. And I can bring you back to our-."

"Crescent beam!"

BWOOF!

Jadeite looks contemptuous for a moment before… The beam passes through the space he was standing in. "Illusion."

I conjure knives, setting them spinning throughout the throne room. He always was better at illusion than me, but he still needs to pass through space to attack. Venus sprints for the plinth but I already know that it's pointless. Sure enough, the moment her hand reaches for the crystal, it vanishes because it was never there.

Venus stares the space for a moment, and then turns to me.

"What do we do now?"

"If there's any chance to free him, it's with the Crystal. I can't use it. It must be you."
Yeaah. Nice idea, not going to work. Minako might be blond, but she's not actually a member of the Moon Kingdom Dynasty and only they can use the Silver Crystal. Usagi was literally the only one who could use the Crystal. Hence why I said that with her dead they were all just completely fucked.

The Silver Crystal won't work for anyone else, its bloodline coded.

Just children, really. That damned cat didn't even give them their past life memories back.
Thats not a power they have.

Just so everyone is aware, this is a Zoat Nerf.

I mean the millenium Silver Crystal is a giant reset button, I'm just wondering who Pluto will have ready to use it.
Pluto wouldn't have awoken yet, so she would be dead just like everyone else on Earth.

Ah, Kunzite, Zoicite and Sailor Venus infiltrating, while OL plays the main assault route. Presumably their goal is the Silver Crystal, though I don't know how well she could use it compared to Usagi...

I raise my right arm and throw a black-green blade, which flies across the room and embeds itself in the creature's forehead. It stares forwards, shaking as its mind adapts to the fact that the brain sustaining it can't any longer, and then it collapses to the ground.

-but I don't.
Cruel, but it's probably better off dead. I don't know what a youmafied animal's instincts would drive it to do, but it wouldn't be good.

It just felt completely natural, didn't it? The same way Mamoru Chiba - Tuxedo Mask - and Usagi just sort of settled into a relationship once the whole Dark Kingdom battle was finished. And then their daughter from the future drops on their heads... 😄 (Though they didn't realise that at the time.)

I want to stay together, I do, but it's… Awkward. How much of what we feel comes from lives we didn't live, thoughts that aren't our own. I haven't been Sebastián Marín for years. I barely remember what it felt like-.

"Come on!"
Ah. I'm guessing French or Algerian? I suppose it helps explain stuff like Nephrite's easy assumption of a human identity (Masato Sanjouin in the Japanese, or dub fans may recognise the name Maxfield Stanton.)

Grey light crackles around my body as I reform my defensive shield, and then I run after Sailor Venus. There aren't many youma in D Point, because why would there be? Beryl… Metalia, had no real use for them, not after the Sailor Guardians were…

Killed.
Which is amusing, given that scenes in the Queen's throne room, in the 90's anime at least, always had a large crowd of shadowy 'courtiers' hanging around.

Just children, really. That damned cat didn't even give them their past life memories back.

There's nothing to do here, no one who can do a damn thing to protect it from… She could stop Ao teleporting us in easily-. So this could be a trap, or Orange Lantern 2 is holding her attention…
Or it's is simply too overconfident to assume mortals could overcome it's protections around the Crystal...

Or she just doesn't care.

That's more likely.
Yeah, pretty much.

"Can you feel it? If the crystal-."

"Yes!" A luckless puffin youma walks around the corner ahead of us and-. Venus throws her sword-chain and slices off its head just before my dagger reaches it. "It feels-. Wrong!"
Such an amusing image. Such a pathetic little thing. Would have been hilarious if it had gained some terrifying power but it never got the chance to employ it.

"Of course it feels wrong. Metalia's using it to pollute the entire planet with dark energy. You're attuned to it."

"Do you know why my compact is taking longer to recharge?"
Well, I guess that's how they plan to use it without Usagi. Won't be nearly as powerful or easy compared to the Princess, if it works at all, but she could use it to revive Usagi...

I frown. "Yes. You don't?"

She glances back at me, clearly annoyed. "No! How would I?"
Because the Senshi have no idea about any of this, especially without the guardian cats. Hell, in the original plot, they only regained their past memories mere hours before facing Beryl and Metalia for the final battle.

Well, that doesn't bode well for the future, unless they can somehow restore them.

"Castle on other worlds?"

"Why did you think you were called 'Sailor Venus'?"

"After the goddess?"
In nearly every continuity (Except the 90's dub) the Silver Millennium era predated recorded human history. The dub dragged it to 'one thousand years ago'... 🤔

"The Romans didn't start worshipping Venus until millennia after Metalia destroyed the Moon Kingdom. They named their gods after our-. The Moon Kingdom's names for the planets."

"Was Venus inhabited?"
Funnily, that's something the original manga kind of hand-waved. It suggested they were, I believe, with the Senshi as 'Princesses' of each world.

What? "Is this really important?"

"I didn't get the past life memories you did. I've only been doing this for a couple of years." We slow down as we reach the heavy door leading to what used to be Beryl's throne room. "If we're going to die, I'd like to know what we're dying for."
A somewhat painful couple of years, no less. Not even in middle school (at first) and fighting for her life against demons...

"Yes, all the worlds of this system used to be inhabited. I don't know why they're not today. Kunzite died during the fighting between Earth and the moon. I occasionally wondered if the other planets were still inhabited and avoided Earth because they remembered Beryl."
I know at least one fanfic (Sailor Moon Z) that took that route, giving each world fantasy populations (Mercury's were Dwarves, Venus had Elves... I think Mars was dead, though.)

"I think NASA would have spotted that."

"They could be hiding with magic. We-. They, used to use it for a lot of things."
Or simply have lived where the probes couldn't spot them. Imagine if all the Mars probes simply landed out in the wilds, and we simply didn't spot the actual cities...

"What-?"

I stride up to the door and run dark energy through it in my usual pattern. "If you want to know more, make sure that we win. Anyone waiting for you?"
Good thing there was no reason for the security to reset their passwords. Who could imagine them being cleansed of dark energy, after all? 😏

"My parents, but… My boyfriend is… Probably here somewhere."

I wasn't sure, but I'm not surprised. "The Lantern?"
But did the local Paul return those feelings? We know OL was sort of icked by the idea of dating Zatanna, who is only a little older than Minako...

Eh, the timelines are wonky about their active periods. If the 'Codename: Sailor V' Manga was anything like the 'Sailor Moon' history, then Minako basically lived in the same 'county' as the rest of them.

"Right."

The door opens wide, and we strike in, weapons and magic at the ready-.
Pose like a boss...

"Hello, Kunzite."

I stare at the green-skinned man standing guard by the plinth over which the Silver Crystal floats. He glances our way for a moment, and then goes back to admiring it.
...Because shit just got real!

"Jadeite. I thought you were dead."

"No. The crystal magnified the affect of the dark energy upon me. I understand Queen Metalia's will better, now. No more weakness. No more distraction. No more ego. Just her will to my action."
So he's little more than a finger puppet himself. Shorn of what little independence he previously had.

I frown, memories from two lifetimes intruding, my brother in arms, the… Bitter, violent monster he became-. We all became. Now… I didn't even think to ask his name in this life.

"Jadeite, we can remove the dark energy. You could-."
Certainly, he never used the same alias twice during his run in the 90's anime.

"Why would I want to remove it?" He turns away from the plinth and starts walking towards us. "I feel a wonderful completeness now. And I can bring you back to our-."

"Crescent beam!"
Sadly, I doubt this is going to turn out like his defeat in the manga (a barrage of magically enhanced ofuda to the face...)

BWOOF!

Jadeite looks contemptuous for a moment before… The beam passes through the space he was standing in. "Illusion."
Because the would-be chessmaster would never expose himself unless he was certain he could defeat his foe...

Metalia probably has it jammed into it's core. Or is piggybacking Usagi's bond to it via her maybe-corpse. Might also explain why it's working so slowly for it - maybe something of Usagi is blocking it's full access...

Venus stares the space for a moment, and then turns to me.

"What do we do now?"
Find Lushun? He should be here somewhere, right? Though that'll also mean facing the local Paul.

Well, at least they're not idle while OL is out facing down the final boss. Going out there to help him would just result in them becoming targets, and expose the fact OL can cleanse people of dark energy. So I guess they get to go hunting for the other living captive we know about: Lushun...

Good thing Metalia just reanimated her, then...
Reanimating a body doesn't restore its Star Seed, and that's whats needed to use the Silver Crystal.

Or simply have lived where the probes couldn't spot them. Imagine if all the Mars probes simply landed out in the wilds, and we simply didn't spot the actual cities...
Sailor Saturn was supposed to have wiped out all traces of the Moon Kingdom outside of the Moon Palace.

True, but they didn't tell the Heavenly Kings that. He just assumes that anyone in the inner circle of the Moon Kingdom would have access.

Oh, that wasn't an animal. It just looked a bit like one.

Secondary School, in her case.

@Mr Zoat, I was rereading the Gamemnae episode and was reminded that Manitou Raven and Dawn Raven are around. What are they doing to occupy themselves?

[Reaches behind himself]

[Pulls out answer]

It says, 'help integrate tribal peoples living in land Kahndaq has acquired into Kahndaqi society'.

At least they have Adom who can understand what it feels like to be a fish out of temporal water. If they're lucky, Dawn won't cheat on Manitou.
I don't think he really cared that much about that.

He apparently married her because he didn't want her to become an outcast, but that was it.

Once she slept with someone else he didn't really have a problem with that.
