With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

He took Timofey with him to space of course.

There is now a confused russian military warehouse worker that will be dragged along on OLs adventures, just passively floating along, occasionally bithching about things.
I'm pretty sure he just took Timofey to where Dr. Balewa called them over, then left him there...but that would be pretty funny.

"Orange Lantern Illustres to interested parties. The ClusterShip is near Pluto. Manga Khan's already gone after it and I don't think he's amenable to reason. Batman, how would you like me to proceed?"
Oh... I remember this storyline...

There was a giant starconqueror warship buried in one of the moons of Pluto.

"Okay, so you see how the memory of him clocking in today doesn't have anything like the same number of attachments as the other memories?"

Koriand'r's are glowing brilliant orange as she tries to see what I see.
Oh, he's teaching her advanced tricks with Empathic Vision? I suppose it's useful to have a second pair of eyes checking his work...

"I…" She shakes her head. "Do not think so."

Okay, perhaps if we…
Unfortunately, she can't just do it the way he did, that would require her merging with Ophidian-chan and then achieving enlightenment from it... I don't think that's gonna work so well...

I turn to the site manager who has been assigned to assist us.

"Excuse me. Would you mind assisting me in a training exercise?"
Might be a bit above his paygrade. or maybe beneath it, depending on his opinion of it...

"Ah…"

"You just have to clock in and out and then stand there for a bit."

"Oh. Ah, sorry, but I need to stay here. Timofey!" One of the warehouse workers stops pushing his trolley and looks around. "Help Orange Lantern."
Ah, the fine art of delegation. Even in Russia, managers know how to fob work off on people...:V

He shifts his trolley to the side so that it won't get in the way, and as a former warehouse operative myself I find myself nodding in approval. It's considerate. I float towards him and Koriand'r follows me.

"Lantern Koriand'r is-"

And despite the coat, it's pretty clear which of us he'd rather be looking at.
I doubt it can do much to hide her curves... I'm not sure there is anything that could manage that...

"-learning to identify altered memories. Please show us where you clock in."

He nods. "This way."
And all the while, he's thinking "Damned weirdos... But at least the woman's hot."

We follow him through the warehouse, and I note that there don't appear to be any more soldiers around than there were when we arrived. I suppose that there are only so many highly vetted soldiers around in any one place. Perhaps the Director decided that bringing more people in was a bigger risk than having fewer people on guard? Then again, this warehouse does supply Russian military facilities across the region. If they tighten things up too much people might not get fed and… Heh, every society is three meals away from chaos.
And some societies less than even that...

"Timofey, have you worked here for long?"

"Four years."

"Excellent." I turn my head to look at Koriand'r. "Timofey will have all sorts of memories associated with the action while I have next to none. You will observe carefully as we both form memories and note the difference."
Even though these are fairly atypical circumstances? I'm pretty sure Timmy won't be feeling the usual things he does...

She nods uncertainly.

"I understand, but I do not think that I have the accuracy to perceive the memory forms as you do."
It's just a matter of wanting to. I suppose her less restrained emotional states make some things easier, others harder...

"That could be." I nod. "I mostly teach ways of thinking. Lantern Xor wasn't much for subtlety, and my own progression was… Rather atypical. I really don't know what it takes for another Lantern to see things as I do."

"Were you able to see the desires of other people before you joined with the Ophidian?"
Somehow, that's not an experience many Lanterns would want to repeat... I doubt most of the soldiers receiving rings are that into the esoteric side of the art.

"Yes… But it was much harder to work out exactly what was going on. I could see drives, but I never learned to see exactly how they related to individual experiences. So this is a learning experience for both of us! You're learning to do it, and I'm learning what it takes for you to learn it!"

Timofey stops next to a somewhat dated computer system with a barcode scanner attached.
Ah, the techonological kludging of old tech and new. The joy of long-running projects. I'd be amazed if it were anything newer than a Pentium or the Russian equivalent.

"Um. You're looking at my desires?"

"Just the ones associated with clocking in and out every day. And… Think of us as proctologists. You haven't got any shit we haven't seen before."

"Ah-." Another glance at Koriand'r. "Okay?"
Yeah, he's more worried about her seeing what desires he has towards her, methinks. The joy of telepathy, or at least the strong empathic abilities Lanterns can exhibit. But I'm sure nothing he's imagining could embarrass her.

Quick check, nothing too specific, just getting a general overview… Yes, nothing I haven't seen before. The orange light associations with the act relate to ingroup affirmation and financial reward. This won't have quite the same associations as this is just a demonstration, but he's been doing it every working day for the last four years so it should be bedded in.

Koriand'r's eyes glow as she tries to see the parts of Timofey's psyche that I'm referring to.
And hopefully nothing else. For Timmy's sake, if nothing else.

"Okay, if you could please clock out?"

He smiles slightly nervously.
Honestly, he has nothing to be worried about, this is nothing invasive.

"You'll tell my supervisor why I did this, right? We're so backed up now that they're going to be on our-. Cases about timekeeping."

I nod. "Of course."
Ah... Just explain that he was helping the superheroes. That usually covers any number of sins.

He unclips his name tag from his overalls and waves it in front of the barcode reader, which beeps its acknowledgement. As expected, the associations trigger more weakly that they normally would, but they're still there. I'm a little worried that we're throwing things off just by being here, but we're just killing time until Dr Balewa finishes anyway…

"And now I do it."
Cue the good Doctor calling them in the middle of things.

"But I cannot see you."

Oh. Right.
Scrying defences strike again.

"The eye thing is psychosomatic anyway. Just connect a filament to me."

She raises her left hand and closes her eyes, a strand of orange light attaching her to my environmental shield. I fabricate a copy of Tomofey's name tag and scan it.
Hopefully clocking him back in, then? This is the perfect moment for Murphy to...

"Did you see-?"

"Orange Lantern!" The three of us look around as Dr Balewa shouts. "I have them!"
...And there goes Murphy! He's off and running!

I transition back to him, taking… A somewhat confused Timofey with me.

"And where are they?"
"Erm... Are we done? I.. kind of have to.. get back to work..."

"Take me to where the ships disappeared, and then I will tell you."

"Rightoh. Koriand'r, we're-" She flies into view. "-going up."

I attach a filament to Dr Balewa and the universe flickers as we reappear in space.
o_O Even his transition technique is faster than hers? Does his avarice affect it that much?

"Yes, I see." He looks around as Koriand'r catches up with us. "Clever, and not an approach that most people would use. But… With a small application of power…"
I take he's cracking open whatever concealment method the ships are under?

My rings chime, and a short distance away Lord Comic King flares with orange light!

"Hold on, L-Ron! I'm coming!"
The 'man' wants his stuff back, huh? Never mess with an Orange Lantern's things, it never goes well for you.

And he's gone. Ring?

I see the ships-. Well, the ClusterShip at least. It's keeping station near Pluto. No sign of damage, no active weapons…
...Wait, is it really going to be some Pluto-based culture? Are we going that obscure?

"Orange Lantern Illustres to interested parties. The ClusterShip is near Pluto. Manga Khan's already gone after it and I don't think he's amenable to reason. Batman, how would you like me to proceed?"
I don't think the Bat-Shuttle's gonna cut it for this. The League really needs to get on proper long-range craft at some point...

Let's hope OL can get there before Manga Khan does too much damage, it's going to be hard to make peace with him foaming at the mouthpiece. And I notice no mention of the Russian ships... Hopefully they're aboard the ClusterCorp craft... We'll see tomorrow, I hope.

No. The company I work for has most of us working from home, but one administrative assistant needs to be on-site. That's usually my colleague Caroline, but she's on holiday today and Monday. That means that I have to get up and leave the house at a specific time to get the train, rather than just being awake at my computer at 0900. Extra fun: British trains (which are no model of reliability at the best of times) at on an all-week Sunday timetable at the moment.

Also, it's too hot in Hampden Park at the moment.

Think that they may be romantically involved maybe?

I mean Pepper Pots loves Tony Stark.
No. That would require Manga Khan to feel love, and we haven't seen that from him. His feelings for L-Ron are pure orange:
"Do you have any way of tracking the ship?"

"Yes, of course. L-Ron!"

He's… Looking around.

I'm actually feeling a little sad.

"I'm assuming that he was on the ship?"

"Yes, I-. Yes."

"Okay, does he have a locator beacon of some k-?"

"L-RON!"

Orange energy bursts out of him in a high-power scan wave, and I spot Lantern Savenlovich hurriedly throw up a shield as the orange light cascades through local space. Leonid's ship actually overcharges its shields in response to what the mostly reassembled tactical computer thinks is an attack.

I'm actually a little impressed with that. Not only was it powerful, I'm pretty sure that would have bypassed most forms of stealth and phasing. I was pretty sure that wasn't what had happened here, but it's nice to be certain.

Khan… His armour is just armour, so there's no body language to read. His gaseous form on the other hand is Brownianing with alarming ferocity and I.. don't know what that means. I don't know if he knows what that means. And then-.

A construct L-Ron appears besides him. His helmet swivels a hundred degrees right and he stares at it for a moment. Then it bursts.

"L-Ron doesn't get sick days or job-share. I'm going to find him so that I can dock his pay."

And he actually wants him back. There are ways to mislead my empathic sense, but using power rings requires the real thing.

I hope that's the case. I hope next chapter, Timofey will just raise his hand and say, "Um, can I go home?"

And OL will startle, remembering that he took a military warehouse worker with him, and possibly facepalm. And then - hopefully - Timofey will gain Badass Normal status by saving the day.

Hi Mr Zoat. I remember that you recently decided to go with the official spelling of Tamaranean. May I ask if you will edit the old ones? If you will, here are a few I found in the story only thread.

No Tamaranian ships, of course. They haven't had any since they went from client world to… Not sure what you'd call them now. 'Resource extraction source', perhaps. Or 'dehumanisation practice centre'. That's my next stop, but I want to take a look around, first.

A little too hard apparently. The second Aellan glares at the first for a moment, then notices me. And now she's staring as well. Okay, I suppose… If they've never seen a Human before I do look a bit like a bleached Tamaranian. I drop the posture, waving my right hand as I turn away towards the closest exit. A flick of my hands and three Praexis Demons drop from the rings, floating just behind me as an escort. These three aren't.. ones I've named. After what happened to Teekl-.

"Destroying the Citadel would not bring the Tamaranian dead back." I raise my right hand, generating a construct-globe showing Tamaran. Local data networks are gratifyingly open to power ring intrusion, and I've been using that fact to update myself. "It would not restore their fleet or their industry."

An image appears in my mind. One… Space station at a Lagrange point. An old Tamaranian shipyard seized after the last war, uparmoured and upgunned. It has interdiction field generators, but they're not set up to stop any form of FTL I use. Three clanships, modified for launching kinetic torpedoes. Orbital strike weapons that most people around here don't bother with because they're next to useless in ship-to-ship combat. Just the thing for killing thousands of unprotected civilians, though. Nothing I can't.. take…

Tamaranian life signs on the station. I'll need to make sure they're safe before taking aggressive action.

I went with a different color because there was already red there. There are more, but in case you aren't going to edit it, I will just start with these.

Thank you, corrected.

If you tell me what you think needs changing and what it needs changing to, I'm almost always happy to change it.

I mean, I'm probably not going to go back and change how I capitalised species names early on even if someone was crazy enough to go and list them all. But pretty much anything short of that.

Are we going to see more of the alternate version of Paul this episode, like the He Man version, or Avengers, hell maybe even the MCU version?

Should be "Timofey"

And poor sod. This is the kind of thing that will end up with him stranded on an alien world, inadvertently saving the indigenous medieval (or earlier) analogue culture while just trying to survive long enough for a Lantern to come find him, and becoming a figure of divine myth in the far-future of the civilization as he gets misrepresented in the ensuing holy texts/histories as an angel-equivalent/lower-'g'-god/demigod brought back to the heavens once his task was complete.

Darn it, I thought I got all of those.

As amusing as this might be, the SI left him back in Russia.

Now I really wanna see Marvel Paul dealing with Wade.

I d much rather have Wade/Deadpool as a friend then an enemy. I like his comics, so I realize that being around him would make my life difficult, but he tends to go out of his way for his friends and family. Plus making an enemy out of the unkillable insane assassin is a horrible idea.

I was thinking of dealing with him as more like a teammate.

Remember that Paul can assimilate people and renegade was able to assimilate Savage.

Now I really wanna see an episode where Paul loses his ring and then goes on an 'advenrure' with the Creeper. :D

Thing is, with his current level of Enlightenment and all, the only way to cut him off from his ring is to toss one or the other into another reality where he can't just call it to him.

And if he's still somewhere that's connected to the Orange Light, he can just call on any local versions of orange power rings anyway.

I want to see OL in The Dreaming. He's been to Heaven, he's been to Hell, he's been dragged to other realities, and fought his way back. The Dreaming?

I'm sure that would be no problem. :)
