"Bold of you, sirrah." The knight in power armour regards me with an air of amusement. He's wearing a tabard split vertically between the red and white of the Order of St. George and the green and yellow of the Kingdom of Manitoba. "Approaching us in the dark of the night."
Ah, Krono's made contact with the Manitoban Knights, I see. Though they're rightfully suspicious of a voice in the dark. Let's hope his talent for fast-talking can convince them to help with the Immortal's defeat.

I take a moment to move the chains around my arms. And then the ones around my legs. "I felt a degree of urgency."

"Art thou a thief, knave? A spy, perhaps?"
Well, they're definitely not taking any chances with him, are they? A pity Krono's telekinesis can make short work of any locks holding the chains together...

"No-. Oh. Actually, yes, I am a spy, I'm just not here to spy on you."

"Oh? Truly! Who is it that you are going to spy on in the middle of my camp, if not me?"
Don't be foolish, sir knight. Who are you to have such an ego, hmm?

"I was spying on the Washington Brotherhood. I then gained useful intelligence, assassinated a high value target and evacuated with a number of their slaves."

"Are they in your cloak?"
Ha, that's be a fine trick. Folded space like that would make Krono's job so much easier. Just carry around a platoon of power-armoured soldiers in a pocket and throw them at people when a fight starts. 😄

"No, they're up in the mountains a little way. I came here because I want to talk to you."

"The folk in the mountains have a poor reputation. The shop-workers of Calgary describe them as ruthless raiders."
Don't tar everyone with the brush of a single reputation, sir knight.

"Would those be the Miscounts?"

"Something of that order."
The now-destroyed Miscounts, if I remember right.

"They say much the same of them. A raider gang they forced out of Washington State decades ago, before they themselves were forced out by the Brotherhood."

"And why are you here as their embassy?"
He's such an unassuming, non-threatening fellow, of course.

"Because they're short of supplies and people and can't afford to risk anyone to come down here and try this themselves."

"And how doth it feel to be so expendable, sirrah?"
I'd have said it was an ordinary Tuesday for Krono, but it turns out the date is a Wednesday.

"I haven't even noticed the change."

"Ho! At least thou hast a positive attitude! And what is the purpose of thine embassy?"
True, this is an average diplomatic encounter. Sometimes they go great... Sometimes, Krono has to exit, pursued by a Deathclaw.

"The surviving Wardens of the White would like to petition to join the Kingdom of Manitoba, and to be recognised as a new knightly order."

"My word."
The first part is probably easy, the latter not so much.

"I don't suppose that Grandmaster Daniel is around, is he?"

"No, he is in the capital. Hast thou met?"
Ah, damn. That would have made this much easier if the Prince Consort was handy. Then again, why would he be out here on the western border right now?

"Yes, I was introduced at court a little over two months ago. Krono, Ambassador of the New California Republic."

"Ah! Now I remember the missives! You're the wizard!"
Of course their fantasy-clogged logic would fix on that.

I nod. "That is one of my jobs."

"I hath long thought that our order was lacking in the fact that we have no wizard. No ancient diviner who can guide us in the hidden mysteries of the world, or enchant our weapons to allow the pure of heart to strike with more than mortal force."
The real magic would be couching their information in the terms of the locals.

"Oh, you shouldn't. We're very rare. The Brotherhood of Steel is over two centuries old and they haven't ever had even a single wizard."

"Dost thou have an apprentice?"
Such is the drawback of a scientific world-view. Although the alternative would probably be some kind of tech-priest, and we know how badly that could go.

"The strange geometries involved in true magic are somewhat unhealthy for the human mind to perceive. My apprentices are merely psychic. Though they could probably do the arcane guidance if you wanted."

"Excellent! So, a spy as well as an ambassador?"

I shrug. "It's essentially the same job. The difference is what you get caught doing."
Well put, Krono. Well put indeed.

"Hum! Well, I can't help them become a knightly order. Those are usually founded by the king. We've never had one formed of outsiders be recognised as such. But if they wish to talk peaceably, then I swear by God and the Queen that I shall not be the one to start a fight."
Ah, I didn't think it'd be that easy. At least they're getting to talk fairly.

"And trade?"

"We do not interrupt lawful traders, sirrah! But by my understanding, the lands on the far side of the mountains are controlled by the very Washington Brotherhood you are intriguing against."
Not for much longer, if Krono has any say in it.

"Indeed they are. How do you feel about slavery?"

"Tis an ungodly practice! No man may be the chattel of another!"
Good, at least you're sensible about that stuff.

"And implanting machines into a man's brain so that his will is no longer his own?"

"The devil manifest! We have fought such evils before, sirrah, and will do so again!"
Well, then. They're not going to be happy to hear what the Immortal's scientists were doing...

"Using nuclear ordinance to attack Russian and China?"

"T'would be madness! Even now we encounter the weapons of our foolish forebears in our own country! Who knows what fresh horrors there will be in Asia! And even if there is nought but normal men, I doubt that they will take an assault from America with equanimity!"
An entirely reasonable response, given that they fight radiation-mutated creatures among other foes.

"The leader of the Washington Brotherhood even now holds fort in the far reaches of Alaska with the majority of his Black Paladins. But his hinterlands are lightly defended, and inhabited with people who hate him."

"An ideal target. But I cannot help you."
A little out of his personal jurisdiction, I suspect. It'd take orders from the crown to send a crusade out that way.

"Ah."

"I am Sir Griffin, the Seneschal of the Grand Duchy of Saskatchewan and Master of the Order of Saint George. I have authority in local matters, but invading another nation would require the blessing of the queen. At most, I can call for a muster while she deliberates."
Yup, just as expected. I'm sure it won't take long for word to reach the capital, especially if Krono goes airborne.

"How about reconnaissance?"

"I… Suppose, so long as we did not penetrate too deeply. And I were simply confirming what you claimed… That would be acceptable."
Still a fair distance to travel, as it's several hundred kilometres from their current location to the Alaskan border, isn't it?

"I can call for a deputation from the Wardens of the White to approach now, if you are agreeable?"

"Yes. And I shall relay your words to Langenburg for their consideration. We are fortunate: there is little interference between here and there. Our radios will reach the capital easily."
Good, Krono doesn't even have to go there himself. Let's hope the Queen and her Prince are sensible about this.

I nod. **Abel, he's agreeable, and would like to meet the leaders of the Wardens.**

I feel his relief at hearing from me. **I'll pass that on.**
No need to carry a fiddly radio when Krono's got mind-speech. The big limit being range, without access to the Sky Walker choir.

"But if we are to be allies, it is hardly right that you remain bound. Guardsman, remove-."

The chains fall off me, and I stand up calmly.
Ah, Telekinesis. Great time-saver.

"How..?"

"I am a wizard, Sir Griffin."

"That is why the chains were cold iron… Most vexing."
Sadly, that's best against Fey, and Krono is anything but. He's certainly not elvish in the slightest. Nor Elvis-y.

I shrug. "I can only suggest you don't believe everything that you read. Now, I've sent a message to the Wardens-."

"How?"

"Mind to mind communication. So they'll be heading down-."
Given how accepting they've been of the magic, I'm not surprised they didn't comment on that part.

"Then I shall go forth and meet them! Sir Nicholas, Sir Clarence!"

Two other knights step forth.

"With me! And wizard?"
Walk where they can see you?

"Yes."

"You're going first. Just in case."
Very sensible precaution indeed. Makes it easier for them to cut him down if there's any treachery even if an unexpected attack didn't hit Krono.

Well, that went well. We'll see if the Knights and the Wardens can get along, but for now, Krono can keep the peace long enough to smooth any initial dislikes, at least long enough to get the Manitobans moving on responding to the Immortal's moves. I at least hope they can cross the distance quickly enough to head off any subsequent tomfoolery from the bad guys...

…so is there a specific reason the Order of St. George keeps a supply of cold iron chains on-hand?
It's stronger than copper while being easier to make than steel. Manitoban technology goes up to about the 1950s, which means that a lot of the rural areas are somewhere in the 1850s.

A single crumbler round wouldn't destroy an entire ship, but it could down their shields on one facing and let the sniper destroy a larger ship. There's nothing so far to suggest that the sniper is ignoring shields, merely that they're able to use enough force to shoot through at least some shields.
Huh, it was established early on that crumblers work on lantern constructs and shields for some reason, but where were they shown working on other forms of energy barriers?
Anyhow, a pre-activated crumbler round could have a simple timer, or be built to burn out after a few seconds if he's worried about collateral.

A margave battleship moves to cover one of its fellows whose shields have taken a battering. Now that Shayera's chained up in an infirmary, our sniper has no chance to get away. And if it turns out that it's Bedovian then I'm going to have to go after Sinestro in earnest. Heh, perhaps Batman would appreciate having a few hundred Lanterns under his command.

I probably shouldn't joke about that.

"I am struggling to detect the attacker. One moment I get a faint reading, and then it is gone."

Some sort of exotic matters bursts against my construct armour. It didn't trigger the kinetic barrier, but it isn't powerful enough to get through my other defences. Tool using is still an advantage in Lantern-versus-Lantern combat, but you have to have the right tools. Otherwise you're better off with constructs.

"Illustres to sniper. Gig's up. Surrender or-"

Incoming.

I generate a point defence construct, which fires and destroys… A crumbler round. Since I'm multi-layering my constructs that wouldn't have worked, but maybe it was intended as a test? I'm a little concerned about those becoming more widely known, though. They're certainly effective against less experienced Lanterns.

"-die. You can't do any more damage and we'll track you if you try leaving the system."

"I'm not going anywhere."

And just like that, any hope of dealing with this peacefully evaporate.

"High Mor."

"Not any longer."

"One last mission?"

"I consider the fact that things have gotten this far to be a failure on my part. One I will do my best to rectify."

"'Rectify' as in 'the Thanagarian Empire recognises that greater internal development and improved standards of living should be the aim of the new High Mor'?"

"The is about more than trivial policy differences. This is about remaining masters of our own destiny as a people. A species. If they do as they are told then there is no difficulty."

"There's a difficulty if their desires lie in other areas."

"Not for Thanagar. And that is my only concern. The more control we give to others, the less we have to ourselves."

"How in control do you feel right now?"

"I am in precise control of my own destiny. For nearly another hour, at least."

Why would-? Ah.

"The more aggressive you are, the more others see you as a threat to them. A slightly less expansionist and more open-handed approach would have preventing this sort of alliance even being feasible while still allowing you to be dominant."

"Not dominant enough."

"So, you don't think that Queen Hyathis is dominant? Because she allows-."

"I don't care how she attends to her own domain. I wish her dead because of what she tried to do to us. You know our duelling customs, don't you Paul?"

"Yes. And I don't really respect them because I think they're stupid. Shayera Thal is still alive, by the way."

"So be it."

"What-?"

He appears, construct mace forming as he swings at-

Railguns, crumbler rounds.

-the battleship for a moment before my crumbler rounds hit the construct and shatter it. Guarn tries to lasso him, but he breaks free in an eruption of power.

He parries the two crumbler rounds that I send his way with small shield constructs.

I fire more but he dodges, launching an energy pulse at the ship which is struggling to draw a bead on his with its secondary turrets.

I transition forwards, orange light slamming down on him as I try draining his energy.

"Where did you get an antithesis ring?!"

He turns his helmeted head towards me, smiling. "Qward."

He tries another energy eruption but all that does is feed me faster. Realising that it's not working, he draws his sidearm-.

I swing my right fist, punching through his environmental field and hitting him in the gauntlet. His jaw tightens as the Nth metal pieces contain most of the crumbler field but can't quite stop it eating through the weaker material of his gun and hand.

"I know the man who made those. We might be able to keep you alive."

"I didn't come here to live."

He presses something-. His armour explodes! My hold on him is gone, and he's flying at me with an Nth metal knife!

Guarn tethers his arm and pulls him into a construct fist, momentarily stunning him. I generate two crumbler rams, slamming them into his front and back and wrecking his hurried construct defence.

And then I bring them together again.

His torso disintegrates, legs and arms and.. head floating away, environmental shield guttering and failing[/color]. The ring itself shimmers for a moment before flying off his hand.

I grab it with a construct hand and shove it into a strong box. Kalmin told me that without a wearer their flight systems aren't that strong, so that should be enough. I clamp it to my armour instead of putting it in subspace, though.

Guarn floats closer. "Is that it?"

"I didn't see any sign of anyone else. We'll do a sweep to be sure, but I expect that it is."

"They were powerful."

I nod. "Red rings give up everything -including rationality- for offensive power. Antithesis rings overload the user's brain for a power boost. Even though he'd have had it for less than a day, he could fight with the strength of a veteran."

"But not the skill."

"He did have less than a day to practice."

He makes a blink of acknowledgement. "What now?"

"After the sweep?" I tether the body parts. I don't know if he has a family, but I should return them anyway. Lord Hades wouldn't have it any other way. "We need to complete the conference."

@Mr Zoat, did the Qwardians have another antithesis ring lying around? Or did they find a way around whatever safeguards the Guardians put to prevent more of them being created?

I fire again, sending thick strands of orange in the wake of the crumble rounds. The outer layer of shielding breaks again, but this time I generate an armoured construct cylinder in the place it used to be. The shield tries to flow back in from the sides even as the next crumbler round takes down the second layer and I extend the construct inwards. Tethers vanish as whoever's controlling the drones works out what I'm doing and I have to work to establish new ones faster than they can be destroyed. Come on… Yes! Three layers only, the next shot hit the hull directly.
'crumbler'
"The more aggressive you are, the more others see you as a threat to them. A slightly less expansionist and more open-handed approach would have preventing this sort of alliance even being feasible while still allowing you to be dominant."
'prevented'

I liked how he had a bunch of desperate tricks. I'm guessing the sidearm was a Qwardian anti-construct weapon, and so wasn't quite as pathetic an attempt as it looked.

I generate a point defence construct, which fires and destroys… A crumbler round. Since I'm multi-layering my constructs that wouldn't have worked, but maybe it was intended as a test? Guessing the Free Lancers are still selling things.

"How in control do you feel right now?"

"I am in precise control of my own destiny. For nearly another hour, at least."

Why would-? Ah

So he has Anti-Green ring.

I'm vaguely exasperated that Paul didn't assimilate the head while it lived (a few seconds, but with the ring overloading him and then suddenly disconnecting, that could be doable). Grayven at least responded to the Corpse by making these suicidal assassination attempts more costly than just the lives of the disposable idiots sent on them; who knows what interesting data on the next dumbass scheme he had?

You'll notice that Paragon has become a lot more scrupulous about trying to ensure that even enemies can go on to an afterlife of some sort. He hasn't drawn any hard lines, but he generally seems to reserve assimilation for either situations where there's a precessing necessity, subsapient enemies, or beings so morally abhorrent that he feels they have it coming. Not just because he'd like another ring wraith slave who might know something useful.

Paul thinks the former High Mor has extremely bad ideas about what is best for Thanagar and a distressing lack of concern about the welfare of other species, but the guy at least has an ethos. So no casual assimilations.

Grayven at least responded to the Corpse by making these suicidal assassination attempts more costly than just the lives of the disposable idiots sent on them

Renegade will be renegade; this is Paragon.

This isn't a qwardian assassination scheme. It's a Thanagarian one. And a preety dumb one at that - going for Paul directly and not trying to, say, nuke or otherwise destroy the planet Vulcan is on - do a 9/11. Make Hyathis unwilling to accept a peace treaty because they commited war crimes - especially if they're worried about the internal continuity of their own culture being defined around imperialism. Paul attacking wiping out the leadership would be ineffective then. Look at the historical playbook of certain middle eastern countries.

True. Except that he knows that shaping effects can be undone, such as by New Gods. It may be top tier stuff, but given his wondering if he should close the 'hole in my strengths' back with Canis on Witchworld, him getting caught out by stuff like this still frustrates me. (Though I agree that he can't have Highfather/Darkseid undo it, here)

Additionally, a thanagarian could be a backdoor for Onimar Syn or other devils to infect the Orange Light (or attack Paul). Paul doesn't live in a setting for "chumps and Darkseid," he's in a setting where he expects the Orange Corps could exist in the Setting's equivalent of the Legion of Superheroes (30th and 31st centuries). Plenty of time for old problems to fester into something disastrous.

And if it turns out that it's Bedovian then I'm going to have to go after Sinestro in earnest.
Buddy, Sinestro has spanked you every single time you've confronted his plots.

I'm gonna call bullshit if the conference works out given the Thanagarians just proved they would all be dead without Orange Lantern.

Ah, yes, the one that had a sniper duel with John Stewart during the War of Light. Not sure how 'eyes capable of seeing three sectors away' would work. But batman as head of a Lantern Corps? Scary idea...

I probably shouldn't joke about that.

"I am struggling to detect the attacker. One moment I get a faint reading, and then it is gone."
Wouldn't be much of a sniper if you could track them from a few shots.

Though against an average Lantern with no personal protection, that might have worked.

"Illustres to sniper. Gig's up. Surrender or-"

Incoming.
Well, looks like that's your response: "You die first."

I generate a point defence construct, which fires and destroys… A crumbler round. Since I'm multi-layering my constructs that wouldn't have worked, but maybe it was intended as a test? Which says whoever fired it knows about his personal arsenal. Which did influence the Orange Lantern Corps' loadouts.

"-die. You can't do any more damage and we'll track you if you try leaving the system."

"I'm not going anywhere."
Except whatever afterlife they prefer, presumably.

And just like that, any hope of dealing with this peacefully evaporate.

"High Mor."
Which we'd guessed quite quickly.

"Not any longer."

"
One last mission?"

"I consider the fact that things have gotten this far to be a failure on my part. One I will do my best to rectify."
Killing OL won't do much, nor will breaking up this conference. His chance to impact the flow of events has more than passed.

'Destiny'? Very arrogant of him. Given that at one point, their Destiny was to be enslaved by the Equalism Plague...

"There's a difficulty if their desires lie in other areas."

"Not for Thanagar. And that is my only concern. The more control we give to others, the less we have to ourselves."
Ah, and there it is. He's afraid of a return to an era like said Equalist Plague.

"How in control do you feel right now?"

"I am in precise control of my own destiny. For nearly another hour, at least."

Why would-? Ah.
He's on a suicide run, then. Falling on his sword wasn't good enough, he's going to force the Lanterns to take him down instead. With all the reputation hit that implies.

"The more aggressive you are, the more others see you as a threat to them. A slightly less expansionist and more open-handed approach would have preventing this sort of alliance even being feasible while still allowing you to be dominant."

"Not dominant enough."
In other words, if Thanagar isn't at the top of the roost, the cock of the walk, then he'd rather pull it down..

"So, you don't think that Queen Hyathis is dominant? Because she allows-."

"I don't care how she attends to her own domain. I wish her dead because of what she tried to do to us. You know our duelling customs, don't you Paul?"
At least it'll stop him shooting.

"Yes. And I don't really respect them because I think they're stupid. Shayera Thal is still alive, by the way."

"So be it."
And if OL can manage it, you won't be dying either.

"What-?"

He appears, construct mace forming as he swings at-
Been a long time since we saw that colour! Anti-Green on the field.

Railguns, crumbler rounds.

-the battleship for a moment before my crumbler rounds hit the construct and shatter it. Guarn tries to lasso him, but he breaks free in an eruption of power.
Not the best matchup, especially if the anti-green can absorb the Green's charge.

He parries the two crumbler rounds that I send his way with small shield constructs.

I fire more but he dodges, launching an energy pulse at the ship which is struggling to draw a bead on his with its secondary turrets.
Economical construct use. Bare minimum size shield, precisely placed. That's a concerning display of skill.

I transition forwards, orange light slamming down on him as I try draining his energy.

"Where did you get an antithesis ring?!"

He turns his helmeted head towards me, smiling. "Qward."
Goes without saying, really. But it settles the question of who he called, I suppose.

And since he doesn't plan to survive, the injury is irrelevant unless it's his ring hand.

"I know the man who made those. We might be able to keep you alive."

"I didn't come here to live."
Not unless OL pulls something drastic to end this non-lethally.

That's one way to shed a Lantern's grip. Sadly, there's two here and only one of him.

And then I bring them together again.

His torso disintegrates, legs and arms and.. head floating away, environmental shield guttering and failing. The ring itself shimmers for a moment before flying off his hand.
At least OL can take lethal options Guarn can't. And as the late High Mor said, this was only going to end one way.

I grab it with a construct hand and shove it into a strong box. Kalmin told me that without a wearer their flight systems aren't that strong, so that should be enough. I clamp it to my armour instead of putting it in subspace, though.

Guarn floats closer. "Is that it?"
Not going to collect his head for some manner of necromantic information-scanning?

"I didn't see any sign of anyone else. We'll do a sweep to be sure, but I expect that it is."

"They were powerful."
Aw, it wasn't that bad. ...Okay, a few delegates and their entourages died, but you got the baddies. Sadly, you probably won't get to keep Shayera.

I nod. "Red rings give up everything -including rationality- for offensive power. Antithesis rings overload the user's brain for a power boost. Even though he'd have had it for less than a day, he could fight with the strength of a veteran."

"But not the skill."

"He did have less than a day to practice."
He still gave everyone a mauling. Never mind what Shayera managed with just a mace and plasma blood.

He makes a blink of acknowledgement. "What now?"

"After the sweep?" I tether the body parts. I don't know if he has a family, but I should return them anyway. Lord Hades wouldn't have it any other way. "We need to complete the conference."
That may have to wait for replacement delegates in some cases.

One live capture out of two isn't terrible, and at least it was the one he'd prefer alive. Still, this might well spook the prospective members of the intended conference. Even if the High Mor only managed to get those two rings out of the Qwardians, the invitees don't know that. They might well suspect there'll be others lurking about...

Paul is the one talking here, so the text shouldn't be completely orange at the end.

I'm curious about what Qward's policy is here. Are they just giving out rings to anyone who wants them just for the purpose of testing them?
