With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

"I'm sorry, you're calling yourself what?"

Hey lots of people in the superhero/Villain community take on other names.

Naming himself after one of the most recognisable alien monsters in cinema is a whole lot better then when Tim Drake changed his superhero name to Drake.

Drake is a type of duck.

New God's also change their names when they get their power.

Paul may also just call himself Illustres in the future, and not just as his title and occupation, if that chapter in the MLP verse during the first April Fools was any indication.

Rankorr also just sounds like the coolest name to call yourself if you become a Red Lantern.

He and Paul also have several things in common.

Both are British guys that were just average Joe's before they got their rings, are able to wield a light that typically drives people crazy in a relatively safe manner and brought changes to their respective Lantern Corps.

They also disabled the leader of their respective Corps. Paul captured Larfleezes, Rankorr killed Atrocitus.

Pretty sure Paul and Zoat have both said multiple times that all the wielder has to do is want something enough and the ring fills in all the details if they are creating a machine of some kind, but it still requires the wielder to be able to utilize the orange light safely.
They fill in the details via the AI handling them.

The premise of this fic is to show how something that can be used for evil can be used for constructive purposes, like wielding a greed powered tool to improve society, and showing how supervillain tech can be used to improve society. The premise of this fic is to basically subvert the superhero genre in a rational way. Instead of heroes and villain creating tech to fight and crate crime they can use it to better society and enrich themselves, societies actually learning and adapting from various crises, like accepting magic is real after a mass murder caused by magic etc.
The only Paul that applies to is the JLAU one.

For all the others it's just face punching.

Reyner still wielded the orange ring without going insane and the fact that he was still able to wield all those rings without going crazy proves that the various lights can be wielded without someone suffering insanity.
Also that "not going insane" lasted for roughly 5 seconds and then we got.

mGfCorA.png

Rayner being overwhelmed and going crazy.

The only reason he ended snapping out of it, was being blasted by the Violet light, which in canon, pretty much just shuts down Orange to the level of being able to even briefly return Larfleeze to sanity.

"Why are you spending time with people you clearly despise rather than following through on your own grudges? Why have you not sought advice from any of this planet's many superheroes? Why did you keep the ring if not to enact vengeance? Why is your head on fire?"

No, you're thinking of the Green light of Will. Orange light simply requires that you want the construct enough.
I can't help but feel like even this is not a true, inherent limitation of the Green light. If Orange light can work by just wanting the end result (and knowing what method it requires), then there's no reason Will can't do the same kind of thing with AI support (Willing the end result, so long as you know the method). It would simply be a matter of the ring's AI support covering for all of the actual details/intricacies of the constructs you're willing into existence. Fundamentally speaking, it makes no sense at all for Orange power rings to be able to have the AI handle all of the details (so long as they're known to the ring AI) while Green power rings, even with the same level of AI, could not. It would seem far more likely to me that the ring AI for green power rings are simply less developed in this regard, possibly due to neglect or lack of imagination on the part of the Guardians (since they can probably do all of the complex detail work/multi-processing required for complex green constructs themselves without AI support, and so never really comprehended the problem or how to fix it for other races...and maybe because they wanted to maintain an inherent advantage against any Green Lanterns they made, both to maintain their authority and standing and to be able to put any of them down if they ever got sufficiently uppity). Paul's ring never had that problem because Hinon designed her ring with the explicit understanding that it would need to work well for someone without any guidance or Maltusian allies to fall back on.

Because if it really was an inherent limitation, then AIs would be inherently VASTLY superior Green Lanterns (Guardians excepted), with the ability to focus extensively on a vast array of parts/things simultaneously and maintain Will for all of them, allowing for extremely complex constructs (and many of them, simultaneously) with no loss of focus unless directly damaged.

The inherent advantages of Green light are that you can use it very deeply all the time without losing your sanity (even if you aren't enlightened), and partly as a result of that, you have an advantage in the sheer strength of your constructs in almost all circumstances. By contrast, without enlightenment, most other colors struggle to operate at all when feeling substantial amounts of other emotions whilst in action (or just not feeling enough of their respective emotion--see Paul struggling to heal dying children after the first bunch because he was too overwhelmed by compassion and couldn't maintain avarice).

I wonder if he exchanged light use philosophy files with the other Pauls after the crossover, and if that would make a difference - if nothing else, I'm sure that Alan would appreciate any blue light theory that any Blue lantern Pauls were able to not down, and Kalmin would probably appreciate notes on the rest of the spectrum.

Pretty sure that only three people have used orange rings in the comics, Larfleeze, Luthor and Reyner.
There may have been more, but Reyner was able to use the ring without going crazy. A handful of people going crazy by wearing something powerful doesn't mean that everybody that does that will go insane.

I'm pretty sure that Guy Gardner was shown to have mastered every color Ring (except Black and maybe White) in one comic.

They fill in the details via the AI handling them.

The only reason he ended snapping out of it, was being blasted by the Violet light, which in canon, pretty much just shuts down Orange to the level of being able to even briefly return Larfleeze to sanity.

Yes the AI provides them with knowledge of how a machine works and its internal structure and the Lantern uses their skill in their respective light to create and maintain said construct.
That's what I said, you didn't understand me?

Renegade and paragon have gotten several people to use their talents in more productive ways, introduced advanced tech and magic in the market, created systems that allow superscientists to get necessary help by setting up foundations to help them, have introduced laws that help society, giving rights to robots and non human organics, have forged peace treaties between various groups etc.

Lord Protector has been protecting his subjects from Mumm Ra and has been governing them, giving them advanced tech and having them taught how to use it.

Warhammer Fantasy one has organised several different groups to cooperate and is bringing the knowledge of an ancient civilisation to other civilisations.

Sybarite is introducing advanced tech to wider use and has turned Africa from a barely functioning shit hole into possibly the most advanced continent on the Earth.

Saul is reforming Vaught American and has healed thousands of children.

He Man version has helped someone recover their ability to use magic and has gotten a new potential mage for the good guys.

Fallout one is rebuilding civilisation in a post apocalyptic world.

The ones that are not doing these things, Baul, Anti Green, Raul, is because their rings don't lend themselves to such things or they couldn't do it even if they wanted to for one reason or the other, like Baul basically having a really low charge and being surrounded by people that are much stronger than him and won't hesitate to kill him.

Just because a handful of people that have wielded an orange ring have gone insane that doesn't mean that everyone that wears one will go crazy.

"Why are you spending time with people you clearly despise rather than following through on your own grudges? Why have you not sought advice from any of this planet's many superheroes? Why did you keep the ring if not to enact vengeance? Why is your head on fire?"

Just because he's not a raging animalistic berserker it doesn't mean all his decisions will be rational.

The guy had several of his closest relatives murdered in short order, with his brother in front of his eyes by the police, was given a ring that can drive him crazy and has probably been suppressing his rage for most of his life if I remember correctly, so that's just a whole bag of issues.

He may have lost some faith in the enforcers of justice after watching his brother get killed by cops and superheroes in the comics have a tendency to attack red lanterns and people that look like their evil. A glowing red guy that has fiery hair and can spit acid just screams evil.

I also think he had a romance thing with Bleez and was helping her deal with Atrocitus.

He may have kept the ring because it was one of the only things that gave him some power in his life.

Considering all the shit life threw at him I can see why he would make some subpar decisions.

It's incredible he turned out as well as he did.

As for the fire hair, well red rings do the most physical changes to their wearers, plus he may hate his hair.

Green Lanterns create constructs by focusing their will on what they're trying to create. If they can't mentally picture what they're trying to do then it isn't possible for them to focus on it. No focus, no construct. That is why they favour simple constructs, because any idiot can picture a beam of light while you have to have a more advanced education to picture, say, magnetic fields.

Orange ring users have the opposite problem. They get premature actualisation, where the ring generates something they want but hadn't consciously decided to generate.

Guardians do not like giving rings to AIs due to the whole Manhunter thing.

John Moore didn't go insane. And it's not completely clear that Atrocitus did either.

I didn't know that Rankorr was able to regain sapience on his own (my main experience with Red Lanterns is the Guy Gardner run), as for Atrocitus I thought that he made the other rings with the maddening function and not his own, or he kept monopoly over the lake of blood, or something?

That's not true in this story, and it's certainly not true in any of the animated series or comics.

That's patently false, and I've no idea what to say except actually read the story you're talking about.

No, the premise of this fic is "Self Insert given a Orange power ring and thrown into Young Justice".

Guys, stop feeding the Vaermina. They're just on their period this week and thrive on negative attention. That's why Zoat blocked them, and why he got kicked off SB.

They're intentionally wrong to rile you up. Ignore them.

I'm pretty sure that Vaermina isn't an intentional troll. I engage with him because I like debating, nd even then I only do so when he isn't making insane troll logic statements.

Even if he was a troll, that just means he's feeding me. Fear me, for I am the he who Trolls the trolls!

The Queen's throne room looks a little different to how it was last time I was here. The computer equipment looks slightly more sophisticated, and the room is generally a bit more tidy… In a way which the Guilders I've spoken to said that they don't usually bother with. It definitely has a more sci-fi office tint. Amalak's influence, I wonder?

"Mummy!"

The young Guilder scrabbles at her bubble again as the Queen gives her her full attention. I place the bubble on the ground and dismiss it, prompting the girl to scuttle across the ground towards the Queen.

"Daughter."

The Queen shifts position slightly, causing her midwifery team to hurriedly move in order to field her next egg. I scan it, but it appears to be a regular Guilder. The Queen then picks our her daughter up and bends to deposit her upon her thorax. She takes a moment to make sure that her miniature self has a grip on her carapace, then returns her attention to me and Koriand'r.

"Illustres. I assume that Lantern Koriand'r informed you of my daughter's existence."

"Yes. Aren't.. almost all of the female Guilders around here your daughters?"

"I am their surrogate. With most of them I have little to no genetic relationship. And similarly little social one, other than as their ruler. This one is based on my genetic template, and I am ensuring our long term social compatibility by spending time tutoring her, rather than dosing her with obedience hormones."

The small Guilder-.

"What's her name?"

"She doesn't have one yet. Informally, we call her 'Princess'."

"And not, I'm assuming, when representatives from other Nests are around."

"We have fallen far enough that they do not condescend to speak with us."

"That must be convenient."

"Yes, immensely. I think that some of the closer ones are waiting for us to beg for their aid. So long as they believe that we are being compelled at gunpoint they will not attempt to intervene on their own initiative, either to aid us or oppose us. Once we have paid off our treaty obligations, things will change. I am presently designing a puppet Hive Father type so that we will be able to resume diplomatic relations with our fellows at some point in the future. I will raise him myself as well."

"Good to know that you're thinking ahead, and investing in regional stability."

"Potential aggressors are monitoring us so closely that -perversely- they feel absolutely no need to raise arms against us. Once our treaty obligations are concluded, I may well permit the monitoring to remain in place. By that time Amalak's military forces should be potent enough to ensure that we will simply not need a substantial military to ensure our safety."

"That's surprisingly… Trusting."

"Amalak strikes me as rational in most areas. If I continue to make it clear in word and deed that we are not threats to him, it is almost certain that he will not attack us just because."

I nod. Good to hear. And… In the very long term, this is a potential avenue for reforming the entire Spider Guild.

"Why did Princess address me as 'Daddy'?"

The Queen reaches back with one arm, and Princess rubs herself against it.

"A great deal of what I have relayed to her concerns you and your outlook. Since she does not have a biological father in the conventional sense, you are the closest to a male role model that she has. Spider Guilders do generally form monogamous pairs for the purpose of raising their young… Perhaps she felt the lack."

I look inside her and let my ring's body language analysis systems dissect every part of her behaviour in search of deception. It's a little difficult. I can see desires and things people have strained to work towards regardless of their desires, but I can't see things they just did without any strong feeling at all. I suspect that the Queen knows why Princess did it, but as far as I can tell she wasn't specifically tutored-.

I half-turn.

"Lantern Koriand'r, exactly how much information on Earth culture have you shared with the-? With anyone?"

Because while I obviously didn't specifically mention that either 'Superboy' or 'Superman' were kryptonian in my book, that information obviously exists on the ring-based records Koriand'r and Komand'r both hold. I don't want Amalak knowing about our kryptonian residents until I'm ready for it.

Koriand'r doesn't appear to know what I'm getting at.

"Some information on your cultural practices." She smiles. "I have made a study of Earth's computer games ever since you told us that you were making one about Vega. I am greatly enjoying Harvest Moon."

Fortunately, Vega doesn't recognise Earth copyright law.

"Koriand'r, while you're welcome to review the entire database yourself, I would rather that you hesitate before sharing its content with anyone else. I'm already dealing with.. one interstellar mercantile company which our political structures are struggling to cope with. I'd rather not add to that for a decade or so."

The Queen leans forward slightly. "We don't have spare ships to send to your home. And even if we did, it would take them a considerable time to get there. Such distances may be small to Lanterns, but to our ships they are more substantial."

Koriand'r nods.

"Adam Blake has not hesitated to tell us about human culture. Tamaran knew the location of Sol in the sky long before your arrival."

"Oh, I trust Tamaran near absolutely. It's the people who could get that information from you that I'm less inclined to trust." I lock eyes with Princess. "Like the young Guilder who decides to use what she knows about our social structures to manipulate me into taking her on as my apprentice. I did not appreciate that."

The Queen takes a firm grip on Princess, picks her up and lifts her out in front of her.

"Princess. The Illustres is not your Daddy. You know full well that you are only related to me."

"Yes, Mummy. Sorry, Illustres."

"Remember this, Princess. You must consider how your desires interact with the desires of others. You wanted to spend time with me and you took what you thought was the route most likely to make it happen. You failed to consider my likely response to that, despite knowing about human family structures and my own interpersonal relationships."

"But… You were angry that Kal-El didn't spend any time with Kon-El."

Koriand'r shared that bit. Marvellous.

"Kon-El didn't have a parent or caregiver. You do. I came here immediately to say this to your face where Kal-El simply avoided Kon-El."

She nods jerkily, and I move my attention back to the Queen.

"Alright, one awkward situation dealt with. Is there anything you need from me, or is everything working here?"

"Between our own resources and those of our partners, we are meeting our needs."

"Glad to hear it. Koriand'r, are you available for detached duty?"

"Yes. Why, is Earth-" She smiles excitedly, her environmental shield brightening slightly. "-in need of my aid?"

"It usually needs something, but I think that having at least one Tamaranean with direct experience might be helpful. If you can spare a few days, I'll escort you there myself."

You switched from Koriand'r to Komand'r twice in the segment. These should be Koriand'r i believe.

Or maybe she's gotten her hands on a bit of Earthly fiction?

"Mummy!"

The young Guilder scrabbles at her bubble again as the Queen gives her her full attention. I place the bubble on the ground and dismiss it, prompting the girl to scuttle across the ground towards the Queen.
A closer relationship than most Guilders would have a with a Queen, I see.

"Daughter."

The Queen shifts position slightly, causing her midwifery team to hurriedly move in order to field her next egg. I scan it, but it appears to be a regular Guilder. The Queen then picks our her daughter up and bends to deposit her upon her thorax. She takes a moment to make sure that her miniature self as a grip on her carapace, then returns her attention to me and Koriand'r.
How maternal. I suppose she's enjoying the chance to mother one of her offspring directly.

"Illustres. I assume that Lantern Komand'r informed you of my daughter's existence."

"Yes. Aren't.. almost all of the female Guilders around here your daughters?"
Well, that depends on your definition on 'daughter', really. Yes, she birthed them. But were they bilogicvally hers, or donated from other Queens as seed material, which Spider Guilders do?

"I am their surrogate. With most of them I have little to no genetic relationship. And similarly little social one, other than as their ruler. This one is based on my genetic template, and I am ensuring our long term social compatibility by spending time tutoring her, rather than dosing her with obedience hormones."

The small Guilder-.

"What's her name?"
Please don't be something like 'Pauline'. That would just be... No...

"She doesn't have one yet. Informally, we call her 'Princess'."

"And not, I'm assuming, when representatives from other Nests are around."
Could be just a little awkward, yes... Don't want them screaming about 'heresy' or improper behaviour...

"We have fallen far enough that they do not condescend to speak with us."

"That must be convenient."
Indeed. I get the feeling they already don't like her group that much.

"Good to know that you're thinking ahead, and investing in regional stability."
Like a proper Orange Lantern, to some degree. Definitely like a proper leader.

Indeed. Amalak is one step up from a Pirate Warlord, after all. He's got only the slightest smear of legitimacy covering up all manner of wrong-doings...

"Amalak strikes me as rational in most areas. If I continue to make it clear in word and deed that I we are not threats to him, it is almost certain that he will not attack us just because."

I nod. Good to hear. And… In the very long term, this is a potential avenue for reforming the entire Spider Guild.
On the order of centuries, I would expect, as her modified behaviour filters through other nests....

I... Can see that happening...

So she came up with it on her own? Precociously sneaky little lady, isn't she?

I half-turn.

"Lantern Koriand'r, exactly how much information on Earth culture have you shared with the-? With anyone?"

Because while I obviously didn't specifically mention that either 'Superboy' or 'Superman' were kryptonian in my book, that information obviously exists on the ring-based records Koriand'r and Komand'r both hold. I don't want Amalak knowing about our kryptonian residents until I'm ready for it.
Yeah, that could be... Worrying. Depends on how cooled down Amalak is when he hears about it.

Koriand'r doesn't appear to know what I'm getting at.

"Some information on your cultural practices." She smiles. "I have made a study of Earth's computer games ever since you told us that you were making one about Vega. I am greatly enjoying Harvest Moon."
She has good taste, certainly.

Fortunately, Vega doesn't recognise Earth copyright law.

"Komand'r, while you're welcome to review the entire database yourself, I would rather that you hesitate before sharing its content with anyone else. I'm already dealing with.. one interstellar mercantile company which our political structures are struggling to cope with. I'd rather not add to that for a decade or so."
Especially one like Amalak...

Well, Tamaran isn't a threat to Earth, especially not militarily. They'd get along gangbusters culturally.

And the little sneak learns a useful lesson... Be sneakier.

Well, she can't see emotions like you can, after all.

"But… You were angry that Kal-El didn't spend any time with Kon-El."

Koriand'r shared that bit. Marvellous.
<facepalm> Goddammit, Kori...

Yes, got to get back to Earth and explain to the Amazons that no, he did not lay the spider.

"Between our own resources and those of our partners, we are meeting our needs."

"Glad to hear it. Koriand'r, are you available for detached duty?"
Oooh, road trip. I bet this will go some way to helping his rep with Themyscira.

"Yes. Why, is Earth-" She smiles excitedly, her environmental shield brightening slightly. "-in need of my aid?"

"It usually needs something, but I think that having at least one Tamaranean with direct experience might be helpful. If you can spare a few days, I'll escort you there myself."
Perhaps a meeting with a certain young bird-themed sidekick down the line? ...Yes, I ship that.

Okay, situation defused. And Koriand'r gets a visit to Earth as well. This promises to be interesting...

...and deed that I we are not threats to him...
...and deed that we are not threats to him...

This version of Kori may be a young adult rather than a teenager, and Dick is still a teenager at this point, so while he may be attracted to her I don't think he'd try to pursue a romantic relationship.

The ones in the animated show were both teens and the comic version of Dick was older.

The Queen leans forward slightly. "We don't have spare ships to send to your home. And even if we did, it would take them a considerable time to get there. Such distances may be small to Lanterns, but to our ships they are more substantial."
It's 25.3 light years... That distance is small to anyone with FTL travel...

"Yes. Why, is Earth-" She smiles excitedly, her environmental shield brightening slightly. "-in need of my aid?"

"It usually needs something, but I think that having at least one Tamaranean with direct experience might be helpful. If you can spare a few days, I'll escort you there myself."
Here's hoping Starfire is smart and trades her orange ring in for one of Alan's blue one's.

Here's hoping Starfire is smart and trades her orange ring in for one of Alan's blue one's.

FTL may not be able to magically transport people from one point to the other in the blink of an eye and the Guild may not have all that advanced tech.

Paul mentioned it was going to take months for a LEGION ship to get there and those ships are probably made by Maltusians, who are super advanced.

She has probably gotten used to using her orange ring now and may not want to do that.

The SI may not suggest it seeing as they only have one blue ring and Alan could die without it.
