With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Well...Barring from the Black Ring in the Buffyverse, this is our first alt confirmed dead. Guess we need a term for the Actively Unalive class of Pauls to separate from the more....stationary ones.

I think so e versions of him died during the fight with Krona.

Or he at least thought that not everyone was going to make it out alive.

Forgotten Realms gods use Divine Power, not magic.

And that's different compared to the various divine entities Paul has encountered in what way.

Really? And what did the Endless think of that? Because that's basically what the Forgotten Realm's Greater Dieties are.

But it gets worse! Because their equilivant of the Source said the one and only time they can use their full powers is to smite intruding beings like Orange Lantern.

And do they interfere every time something like that happens?

No, they don't.

Cool, that's new. I wonder if Oh El will make an attempt to resurrect this bloke. Might be excessively difficult given the presumed lack of a soul, though.

Not necessarily.

Anti-Green Paul lacked a soul but the Lazarus Pit still worked for him.

"I remember, Senator, that you have a rather different answer prior to your…" he points to his face. "Empurata and mnemosurgery."
'had'?
The SI doesn't know, but if you look at what Zor's magic did in Seven Soldiers you can sort of work it out.
Because of this I looked into Zor a bit, and apparently he transformed Zatanna into Zorina, and that was the origin of antimatter Zatanna's name in this story, which was alluded to with Oh El feeling he knew the name from somewhere when he first heard it. I just thought that was neat, I'd never given much thought to where the name came from.

Also it seems like Zor might be some sort of metafictional entity. There's an obvious line to be drawn between that and Oh El appearing in a video game setting, but I'm not able to see any specific explanation.
Not necessarily.

Anti-Green Paul lacked a soul but the Lazarus Pit still worked for him.
Oh yeah, forgot about that. I don't know if his Lazarus Pits work the same as Oh El's, but if they do that's an easy rez.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. I don't know if his Lazarus Pits work the same as Oh El's, but if they do that's an easy rez.
Those pits are a limited renewable resource, which Paul's likely inclined to limit the use of to his friends. Or a solution to unusual problems which basically require a revival.
Unless Paul learns that this Paul is trapped in hell due to his death, I don't think there will be a revival.

….So can other Paul be resurrected? Would two be better than one or no soul no dice?

Back Here

OL was taking some time off work to play in a game of 40k with Zatanna and some folks, and he decided that he'd be 'in character' for the whole thing....as a Demon of Slannesh....complete with accouterments.

Yes but the bit I'm missing is how OL and Zatanna cosplaying related to OL ending up in Heroes of Might and Magic now. It's two franchises I know almost nothing about so I look like this at the moment.

Is this another thing like the power rangers segment? Something from what Ambush Bug did to him?

So OL traded places with a dead him? does that mean Blaze and the demon girl also traded places with other selves?

Its this dead Paul about to become a new Grundy?
Maybe? But I feel like my poor wording might have confused you, from what I can tell Zor didn't do any universe trading to transform Zatanna in the comics, he just used reality warping magic.

There could be some place trading going on here but I don't think there's any strong reason to believe so, particularly given the presence of the corpse. The corpse probably isn't an illusion given that it appears real to ring scans, though for all I know these people are capable of making perfect illusions like that, I'm not familiar with the setting. And of course this entire place could be an illusion of some sort based on Oh El's memories.

You don't really need setting knowledge here. There's no plot-relevant link between those things. The chain of logic is thus:

Oh El is transported to Ashan by presently unknown means, which are presumably related to Zachary Zor's magic and maybe Boss Smiley since Oh El was talking about him -> Minotaurs in Heroes of Might and Magic V have pierced nipples -> Oh El sees a minotaur and is disgusted by the nipple piercings -> Long ago, Oh El costumed as a daemonette, which involved piercing his right nipple -> Therefore it is claimed that it is hypocritical of Oh El to be disgusted by nipple piercings.

Pretty sure the Ambush Bug things happen only on 1 April, and this is in August. From reading a bunch of blog posts and wiki articles I get the impression that Zor might be some sort of metafictional entity though, so there is some similarity there.

The divine entities Paul has encountered so far are all powered by dream/magic.

In the Forgotten Realms Divine Power is distinctly different from magic.

And do they interfere every time something like that happens?

No, they don't.
Actually yes, which is why the prime material plane even still exists.

Huh. Okay, lil weird, but okay.

Also it kind of makes sense? He was cosplaying a daemon, they're supposed to be fucked up. I guess it's a bit like somebody who hates makeup putting on makeup to act a part.

Apropos of nothing, I hate makeup.

I did my own reseach into Zor, and I think Chaoswind talking about Paul turning into Grundy has something to do with Zor turning into Grundy in the comics.

Zor was apparently part of a group called the Time Tailors who maintain the fabric of the universe, but he rebelled and created the Sheeda. After Zatanna beat him, they captured him and altered reality so that he became Cyrus Gold. I guess in the comics this is supposed to work as an explanation that Grundy's power and repeated resurrection has something to do with his true nature as a Time Tailor, but I'm not sure.

The question I have is, has he been defeated like this in this universe yet, or is that what this episode is leading up to? I checked his other appearances, and apparently after he was trapped by his own paralysis spell, in the comics he escapes 2 issues later. Zoat could have been alluding to that when Paul said that trapping him in his own paralysis spell sounded like a bad idea.

The Time Tailors were also drawn to look like the writer of the Seven Soldiers comics, Grant Morrison, so if they show up and Zoat decides to do something with that then this episode has the potential to get pretty meta.

Oh, that's my bad, I thought your WTF was over the nipple ring joking going on. Separate tracks to the multiversal travel going on. My referring back to the Zatanna stuff was about the joke, rather then the current location, hence the confusion. The fact that Zatanna was involved in that bit, and any lore of this Zor has with her is, I assume, complete coincidence and can be ignored.

Leaving that bit of insanity behind.

Given how Krona was dealt with at the end of the Crisis of Infinite Pauls situation with the solution of 'stuff him in a universe where his BS doesn't work' I would suggest that whomever dealt with this Zor fellow may have had a similar idea about shipping this Wizard / Time Tailor /Fallen Angel.....or what ever he really is....off the reservation in a similar manner, given the apparent powerset we're dealing with (with reality warping and 'goes toe to toe with the Spectre' being worrying levels of BS to deal with)

Might and Magic is off the DC grid, just as much as the Fallout universe would have been, and likely has different local magical powers and physical rules....OL here notes when he FEEDS on the magical cell containing him that it doesn't feel quite the same as when he's done that back home so the local powers appear to have a different....Flavor, for lack of a better term. Likely if Zor was sent here he'd have had to work his way back up from a reduced level of power, if he is still about. I think the multiverse got lucky with Krona popping up looking down the barrel of Fallout-Paul and his Psychic WMD, and I'll assume that this Zor is still up and about.

Given that there is a Local Paul, having had interactions with the local knife ears (long enough that he'd gotten a few good rants in if they recall his opinions of terminology of Kingdoms without Royals) It does put them in a tangential connection. We don't know if this version of Paul showed up in the grand pile of Pauls from the Krona Crossover thing. Some do appear to have missed out on it, Renegade and the DCAU Peter Wynn for example.

I am not in anyway experienced in the Might and Magic series of games or the universe it involves so anything further is just idle speculation on my part.

Hm.

One obvious drawback about getting an Apokoliptian warship is that I am not a God of Engineering. And goodness knows that the Amazons are no help in that direction. So unless I can find someone who is, there's a limit to what I can do with the Absolute Dominion. Repair it, certainly, restoring things to specifications is what Grayven the First did using gordanian labour. But-

I feel a predictable burst of envy as one of the E.D.F.'s cruisers… The Monte Carlo, just flies right up to a Reach listening post and slaughters the entire crew with precise bursts from its purple death rays. Didn't even show up on their sensors. Unless they were faking, which is possible. It sounds like Reach people are pretty fanatical on those few occasions when it would matter.

I aim the Absolute Dominion's main gun at the Reach fleet I caught undergoing repairs on the opposite side of the system. Normally they'd be outside of engagement range, but… When your gun fires faster than light on its own… Strike Hard, Strike True

A battlecruiser disintegrates, and the docking frame it was resting in loses about a third of its mass. What's left starts spinning and shattering, collapsing in a few moments as the Absolute Dominion realigns and targets its nearest neighbour. Debris is mostly caught by the shields of the other frames and ships, but a few smaller vessels are hit by larger fuel-carrying fragments and are crippled or consumed.

"Grayven to Spider. What news?"

"The intelligence briefing was correct. The people here are fully acculturated, but they have no particular resistance to telepathy. Should I tell the genomorphs to give them new personalities?"

I shrug to myself as another docking cradle bursts, along with its cargo. No visual between ground and fleet, of course. Mr. Near nearly rolled his eyes at the very idea, though his practical argument that a transmission with more data would be more easily detected eventually won the day. Normally I'd hate the idea of mentally scrubbing people like that, but they won't be able to function without their Reach masters unless we do. And I know what trying to avoid executing her Citizens is doing to Diana. Sometimes you just can't help people in the way you'd like to help them.

"Not up to us. Offer that service to the Controllers. If they want it, they can negotiate with the genomorphs themselves."

"M."

"Any of those Scarabs around?"

"There was. I can report that when the Scarab is inactive the host is no more resilient than a normal member of their species. Also, Scarabs appear to be 'alive' for the purpose of purple death rays."

I nod. "Worth knowing. Good work."

I hear a very deliberate… Not a sigh, but a slow intake of breath before the channel disconnects. He reprogrammed the pickup just so I'd hear that. The sheer amount of work he's prepared to put in to delivering a mild near-insult…

Ah? Looks like that was a fuel hauler. Explosions in space aren't a big deal, not unless things are right next to each other and the explosion is very radioactive or exotic. Still a blow to them-.

Huh.

The ships near the one that just exploded are… Disintegrating.

Ah…

And so are the ones a little further away. That doesn't chime with anything I know about space warfare. The only thing that comes to mind is nanotech, but that wouldn't act so fast.

Log and report, I guess. I-.

Ping.

Of course they do. But I suppose that there's no sense passing up an opportunity to spread misinformation. Put them on.

Ping.

The holographic image of a Reach Negotiator appears before my command throne. Due to the fragile ego of Other Grayven, the Negotiator appears both smaller than she is in reality and below me, meaning that she has to look up while I remain sitting down. Something about the system replicates the effect on the communication system of anyone who sends messages to me. You Are Beneath Me

It's so petty that I smile every time I use it.

I steeple my fingers and wait patiently as the last battlecruiser dies.

"Lord Grayven. I was under the impression that you had left."

I smile broadly, something that immediately makes her uncertain. Old Grayven never did that, I bet. "I always have time for old friends."

"You appear to be attacking one of our research stations."

"Yeah. Using brains as computers? I honestly thought that your command of electronics was better than that."

"Ping."

"We find them suitably efficacious."

"Might need to find a new solution now."

"That was hardly our only production facility."

My smile broadens to manic levels. "I know! Your people are marvellously industrious." I shake my head. "I wouldn't expect to hear from their garrisons again. I haven't read the reports yet, so I can't give you feedback…"

"You do realise that will impede our ability to fight the Controllers' operatives far more than it will impede our ability to fight you."

"Yes? Oh! Sorry. I don't care about you."

"You did seem to care when you launched your invasion."

I shrug. "Had a bit of a rethink. Frankly, Vega had more to offer me, and I can probably just trade for the parts of the Reach that I actually want from the Controllers after they win. Which will be easier now that they aren't spitting their attention between you and me."

"You've come to terms."

"I got out of my own way. Thank you for assisting with that personal breakthrough."

"With the Controllers." She considers me for a moment. "You've changed."

"If we ever meet, I'll give you a wooden spoon."

She blinks. "What?"

I shake my head, waving my right hand dismissively. "Cultural reference. A prize of no great value, usually awarded for last place or to someone who got no points." I lean forwards slightly. "So, yeah. I'm not trying to take and hold your territory for myself, just degrade your war fighting capacity for someone else. And since I don't need to prove myself to anyone, I'm happy to just fly from target to target annihilating them as I go."

Mother Box, message Kara would you?

Ping.

"Or send someone else on my behalf."

The Negotiator's eyes widen as the alarms in the room she's in start to go off.

"You're fortunate; the flagship of the Kryptonian Stellar Navy hasn't seen action -barring a minor policing action- for over a century." She turns to flee… Too late, I suspect. "I'll send the spoon to your next of kin!"

The hologram shuts down and I sit back, pleased.

"Has Mister Near evacuated?"

"Ping."

"Good show. Then let's head back to Maltus and find out what else they want us doing."

Hmm, so they may be partially organic, or since the Purple Ray is partially magical in nature, maybe it can also affect AI if they're sufficiently advanced that they'd develop something like a soul.

She'd probably have to do that if you met in person since you're so tall.

"makes her"

Frankly, Vega had more to offer me
So, good chance the Negotiator was transmitting a stream of this conversation back to other Reach stations. Which means a Reach retaliatory strike on Vega is now likely. Yes, they're being pressed by the Controllers, but a couple scarabs, or even just unmanned, interstellar missiles aren't a huge investment. Telling the enemy what you find valuable isn't super smart, especially when you spend most of your time on either Earth or in another universe entirely.

Modifying it is clearly right out of the question unless you want to deal with Apokalips or New Genesis, of course. Which means you're stuck with the default settings of the last owner. šŸ˜ He wasn't a 'Taskbar on the right edge' sort of freak, was he?

I feel a predictable burst of envy as one of the E.D.F.'s cruisers… The Monte Carlo, just flies right up to a Reach listening post and slaughters the entire crew with precise bursts from its purple death rays. Gotta love weapons that only affect organic matter. Leaves all those useful devices intact to claim later.

I aim the Absolute Dominion's main gun at the Reach fleet I caught undergoing repairs on the opposite side of the system. Normally they'd be outside of engagement range, but… When your gun fires faster than light on its own… Strike Hard, Strike True
...The enemy is dead before they even realise you've shot them. A pleasant trick.

A battlecruiser disintegrates, and the docking frame it was resting in loses about a third of its mass. Messy work. If all that falls out of orbit, the planet is about to have a bad day.

"Grayven to Spider. What news?"

"The intelligence briefing was correct. The people here are fully acculturated, but they have no particular resistance to telepathy. Should I tell the genomorphs to give them new personalities?"
Sending his super-spy in to raid their systems? Very sensible indeed.

I shrug to myself as another docking cradle bursts, along with its cargo. No visual between ground and fleet, of course. Mr. Near nearly rolled his eyes at the very idea, though his practical argument that a transmission with more data would be more easily detected eventually won the day. And I know what trying to avoid executing her Citizens is doing to Diana. Sometimes you just can't help people in the way you'd like to help them.
In this case, they probably would be better off dead, than trapped in their blind obedience to masters that would happily exterminate them. Or getting their minds wiped in favour of a more pliable mindset as suggested.

"Not up to us. Offer that service to the Controllers. If they want it, they can negotiate with the genomorphs themselves."

"M."
Wonder if any of the Controllers have been taking an interest in the noteworthy biology of the Genomorphs?

"Any of those Scarabs around?"

"There was. I can report that when the Scarab is inactive the host is no more resilient than a normal member of their species. Also, Scarabs appear to be 'alive' for the purpose of purple death rays."
That's an interesting discovery. Then again, we've seen that Orange Lanterns can attempt to assimilate them as if they were living beings rather than smart technology.

I nod. "Worth knowing. Good work."

I hear a very deliberate… Not a sigh, but a slow intake of breath before the channel disconnects. He reprogrammed the pickup just so I'd heard that. The sheer amount of work he's prepared to put in to delivering a mild near-insult…
And it probably annoys him that the Renegade doesn't take it as such.

Ah? Looks like that was a fuel hauler. Explosions in space aren't a big deal, not unless things are right next to each other and the explosion is very radioactive or exotic. Still a blow to them-.

Huh.

The ships near the one that just exploded are… Disintegrating.
...Let me guess, Qwa-Matter? Since the Reach in this timeline wouldn't have had anyone interfering in those research plans that OL disrupted.

Ah…

And so are the ones a little further away. That doesn't chime with anything I know about space warfare. The only thing that comes to mind is nanotech, but that wouldn't act so fast.
Or a form of matter inimically hostile to nearly all other forms of matter.

Log and report, I guess. I-.

Ping.
"Done. Also, the Reach are hailing us. Do you want to gloat?" I'm sure some Controller is going to find all that data very fascinating.

Of course they do. But I suppose that there's no sense passing up an opportunity to spread misinformation. Put them on.

Ping.
"Connection opened. Do try not to be too smug, dear." I see he's quite certain they're going to be relaying whatever he says to the Reach command.

You Are Beneath Me
And of course, he probably can't change that if he wanted to, so he's stuck with it. Probably amuses him a little when dealing with foes, but it would be a little insulting towards allies.

It's so petty that I smile every time I use it.

I steeple my fingers as wait patiently as the last battlecruiser dies.
The difference between the Renegade and the Reach? Presentation!

"Lord Grayven. I was under the impression that you had left."

I smile broadly, something that immediately makes him uncertain. Old Grayven never did that, I bet. "I always have time for old friends."
I suspect Grayven was more of a 'sit upon his throne with stormy frowns under a troubled brow' or at least affected that sort of image.

"You appear to be attacking one of our research stations."

"Yeah. Using brains as computers? I honestly thought that your command of electronics was better than that."

"Ping."
"Quite disgusting, using living things as mere calculators." Well, there's a familiar idea. OL dealt with that in the main timeline, if I remember right.

"We find them suitably efficacious."

"Might need to find a new solution now."
You assume he's only crushing this one site? Think again.

"That was hardly our only production facility."

My smile broadens to manic levels. "I know! Your people are marvellously industrious." I shake my head. "I wouldn't expect to hear from their garrisons again. I haven't read the reports yet, so I can't give you feedback…"
The Earth Fleet proving quite efficient, I suppose? Or Darkstars and Lanterns, more likely.

"You do realise that will impede our ability to fight the Controllers' operatives far more than it will impede our ability to fight you."

"Yes? Oh! Sorry. I don't care about you."
Nice, turning a confident boast into a pathetic one with a single implication.

Which would have been unthinkable for the original Grayven. Someone else operating outside of his control in his territory? Heresy!

"You've come to terms."

"I got out of my own way. Thank you for assisting with that personal breakthrough."
It's more that they're pointing their guns in the direction of a mutual foe first. Though the Renegade isn't likely to turn them back on the Controllers afterwards until they make the first foolish move.

"With the Controllers." She considers me for a moment. "You've changed."

"If we ever meet, I'll give you a wooden spoon."
It would be tres embarrassing to be the first player eliminated in a 4X game this quickly.

She blinks.

They do make such nice pops when they explode, after all.

Mother Box, message Kara would you?

Ping.
"Sending the request now. Doomsday acknowledging and taking action."

"Or send someone else on my behalf."

The Negotiator's eyes widen as the alarms in the room she's in start to go off.
I bet she's not even in the same system as he is.

"You're fortunate; the flagship of the Kryptonian Stellar Navy hasn't seen action -baring a minor policing action- for over a century." She turns to flee… Too late, I suspect. "I'll send the spoon to your next of kin!"

The hologram shuts down and I sit back, pleased.
And that will put a cat amongst the pigeons of the Reach High Command. Kryptonians on the move? Most concerning, I would imagine, assuming they know of them...

"Has Mister Near evacuated?"

"Ping."

"Good show. Then lets head back to Maltus and find out what else they want us doing."
"Naturally. And being quite irritable about the 'ease' of the operation." I bet the Renegade's work looks more impressive than it actually ends up being...

Some impressive gains for Maltus ahead, possibly as much as the Paragon managed in the first year. No doubt the Renegade's method will have drawbacks, though. Letting his interest in Vega slip, for a start... That could invite reprisals, though it is heavily defended by his Lanterns. I'm sure we'll find out what the Reach do in time...

So, good chance the Negotiator was transmitting a stream of this conversation back to other Reach stations. Which means a Reach retaliatory strike on Vega is now likely. Vega has at least half a dozen combat flotillas from multiple species, a cloning facility for Kryptonians with multiple combat users plus the doomsday and a local Orange Lantern Chapter. Their ability to tank a reach punitive attack is much higher than earth, hence why Grayv said he would use the opportunity to spread misinformation.

Hmm, I do remember that renegade met with that Qwardian leader and that the guy seemed to be trying to be friendly to him, but if that was all of their conversation then he may be selling qwa matter to the Reach.

Connection opened. Do try not to be too smug, dear." I

I think she'd understand by now that it's impossible for him to not be smug.

Yep.

Him and Effigy.

Paul even gave one of them their body back, but found out that a part of them is still altered to serve the Reach.

And it gets worse if you don't remember.

Apparently, in order for the brains to be developed in such a way as to be useful they need real experiences.

They can't just hook them up to a VR system and then cut out the brains; they let those people live out real lives on planets they controlled and then made them think that they're just going to get jobs on a different planet before putting them in computers.

"There was. I can report that when the Scarab is inactive the host is no more resilient than a normal member of their species. Also, Scarabs appear to be 'alive' for the purpose of purple death rays."
I imagine it'll be a pain in the arse for the Reach to fix that vulnerability. Though maybe it's easier than I expect.

What's fantastically advanced magitech for, if not this?
"You're fortunate; the flagship of the Kryptonian Stellar Navy hasn't seen action -baring a minor policing action- for over a century." She turns to flee… Too late, I suspect. "I'll send the spoon to your next of kin!"
'barring'

To be clear, the Reach have no idea where Vega is or what kryptonians are.

They knew that Grayven went somewhere, but they couldn't infiltrate his fleet or follow boom tubes. They haven't gotten far enough to have good information on that part of the galaxy. They've never encountered kryptonians at all.
Thank you, corrected.

That's hilarious.
Its so petty. So insecure.
I love it.

We have reason to suspect the Kryptonians were infiltrated by the the Reach or by the Dominators.
That Krypton was so feared by these people that they sent a memetic virus to induce systems drift into self destruction.
Now we shall see if they shit their pants....
Looks like they're still scared.
Guilt is confirmed.

VENGEANCE FOR ZOD!
JUSTICE FOR KRYPTON!

In the Renegade timeline, Zod's still alive. In the Phantom Zone, but in one piece. And Amalak's dead.
