With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Wouldn't Paul still be able to heal them, though?
Orange Light is an inherently corruptive force, so realistically it would be resisted like any other type of corruptive force trying to alter them.

That said, it is Zoat's story, and as shown with Mazikeen hand waving the Silver Crystal he can just write them doing it anyways.

If the orange light is being used to heal and repair their bodies I don't think their nature would inherently resist it. If he tried to mind control them or change the template of their bodies from their starseed souls (like making them older, or turning them into men) that is a very different issue.

Usagi should be capable of restoring everyone that has died since they got taken out, traumatic memories being optional, so everything should end well until the next Chaos God comes to the Solar system to destroy everything.

Makizen, the Litch King and OL now get to open a new portal into another universe, I wonder where are we going next, hopefully not DBZ or somewhere equally ridiculous like Muv Luv earth after the evacuation.

It's a non-sentient passive defense, it doesn't care about intentions, just energy type.

"I have been studying-."

"Don't bother." I sigh. "I should have realised that a random Dark Elf wizard wouldn't have access to Sandro's notebook. So you're Sandro, right?"

"I am indeed." He considers me for a moment as behind him the Guardians hug one another. "I thought that you would be more perturbed."

I shrug. "My people's God of the Dead is one of my favourite deities. And I don't know how notorious you are on Ashan, but I've never heard of you… Because I come from a different world. Lying to me…" I sigh again. "I've done worse for less cause. You didn't tell me any important lies, and you've given me the help I asked for. And you honestly thought you were going to be destroyed there-."

"Ahh. That… Not entirely. A necromancer of my experience will usually have a technique or two to avoid Final Death. Though it would have been inconvenient, for both of us. Oh, ah, your surmise as correct: the woman you call Mazikeen was indeed below, and in rude health when I left her."

I nod. "Good, thank you. Still on board for finding Angelica?"

"Certainly! Though I should recover the rest of my artefacts. If you will excuse me?"

"By all means. I've got a few things to check up on, too."

He nods, and then turns away and heads towards the entrance to D-Point.

"Hghhrrr-hghhrrr."

I look around-. Huh. I wasn't sure-. I transition over to the woman in blasted rags lying on the arctic snow, extend my environmental shield over her and fabricate some clothing over her dangerously cold body.

"Is your name actually Beryl, or something else?"

She staggers to her feet, bent over, arms hugging her torso. "W-what?"

"Sebastián and Ao prefer to use their names from this life, rather than their past life. But I don't know which set of memories stand out more to you."

"Beryl… That's my actually name… In both lives."

"Huh. Funny how that worked out." And while I think the Silver Crystal probably purged her of dark energy, I'm going to take a look… Yes, looks like she retained her past life memories in the same way that the Heavenly Kings did, but like with them, it's less… Spiky? Now? I see images of things I think are from her current life shuffling back to pre-eminence, with her first life fading into the wings. "So, official story: you were possessed, you hate everything that happened, and as an act of restitution you're happy to put your new magic skills at the service of the Earth."

She nods stiffly.

"Anything we need to know right now?"

"The-. The cats are alive, in a cage in the dungeons. Prince… Endymion… He's dead. I-. Beryl-. Wanted to keep him, but once Metalia took over fully…"

"I understand. Best go and give the girls the news."

I glance over at the Pillar of Bones, where Ao is waiting… I wave my right arm at him in an attempt to signal that he can-. He waves back, and then vanishes is a shower of petals.

"Hey, thanks for-." Guardian Moon pulls away from the Guardian huddle to face Sandro. "-the-. AH!"

They stare at each other for a moment, Japanese superhero and walking skeleton. And then Guardian Moon brandishes her tiara and the other Guardians adopt combat poses-.

"Oh, knock it off!"

"Ehh?!" Guardian Moon stare at me is if I've taken leave of my senses. "What do you mean, 'knock it off'?" She points at Sandro. "That's a walking skeleton!"

"Technically speaking, it would be more accurate to refer to me as a liche. 'Skeleton' is usually used to refer to animated bones without a sophisticate intelligence."

"Oh." She nods, then points at Sandro again. "That's a walking liche!"

"This is Sandro, and he's at least fifteen percent of the reason we're all alive right now. He's the one who drew out the dark energy so that your Crystal could purge it."

Planetary scan, summarise casualty figures.

Compliance.

"And -Guardian Mercury, if you would please confirm the general state of the world- I think you'll find-"

Guardian Mercury fiddles with her goggles.

"-that the death toll from this was mercifully low. Despite the billions transformed into Youma, the population now is not all that much lower than available census records say it should be."

Mercury stares at the flashing lights inside her goggles for a moment, and then sags in relief. "I was afraid to look."

Guardian Moon doesn't look convinced. She frowns for a moment, then turns to Guardian Mars. Mars stares at Sandro for a moment, and then shakes her head. "He doesn't feel evil."

Sandro shrugs. "Honestly, I'm as surprised as you are. May I continue?"

Guardian Moon frowns, but appears to accept that. "I guess…"

Sandro nods, and continues towards the D-Point entrance. "Have a pleasant day, dear girl."

"Huh, that was-." She sees who's standing next to me. "That's Queen Beryl!"

Beryl shrinks back slightly, and I shake my head again. "Beryl had her brain rewritten by Queen Metalia the first time she came here. You've never actually met the real her."

Guardian Moon sort of sticks out her head to stare a little closer at Beryl, and then turns towards Guardian Mars. The other Guardians do the same, though Venus gives me a quizzical look first.

Guardian Mars frowns at Beryl for a moment. "She doesn't feel evil either."

"Whaaaaaaat?!"

Beryl relaxes slightly, but I close my eyes for a moment. "I'm glad to hear that your death and reanimation had no long term psychological consequences. Beryl says that the cats are still alive, so we can head in and pick them up, and then I can fly you all back to Japan."

"Um." Beryl looks awkward for a moment. "I'm from Canada. I don't know… It's been years, everyone… Probably thinks that I'm dead…"

"I can drop you off first, it's no problem. I suggest telling them that whatever happened to cure everyone resurrected you, but you could try the truth if you like."

"I… Don't think that would be a.. good idea."

Warning! Avarice detected!

And… My alter ego runs out, construct armour covering his body. A little more simple than what I use, but I suppose that I've had actual power armour to draw inspiration from. He scans the environment, orange lights strobing over the arctic landscape. Apparently satisfied that there's no immediate threat, he slows, walking towards Guardian Venus.

"Paul!" She runs over to him, and the two of them embrace…

Ah… Given what happened with Zatanna, I can't really criticise him for hugging her after a life and death situation…

I'm not here to police his personal conduct anyway. Finish up, grab Mazikeen, and then go and find Angelica.

Ah… Given what happened with Zatanna, I can't really criticise him for hugging her after a life and death situation…
Does it really matter when she has two lifetimes worth of memories and experiences? From what I remember of reading the manga years ago I'm pretty sure her first life makes her noticeably older than Paul.

It's one of those sketchy morality talks that I don't think qq would like us talking about.

Does it really matter when she has two lifetimes worth of memories and experiences? From what I remember of reading the manga years ago I'm pretty sure her first life makes her noticeably older than Paul.
That's the thing: she doesn't. It's been mentioned a couple of times, but to spell it out, the local SI has made it pretty clear that he thinks the idea of getting 'past life memories' is sketchy as heck, particularly when you look at what happened to the Heavenly Kings. You're basically overwriting your brain with someone else's thoughts and memories. Sure, we know that he's objectively wrong, but it persuaded Sailor V and as such she's been trying to avoid remembering things she didn't do herself.

"The-. The cats are alive, in a cage in the dungeons. Prince… Endymion… He's dead. I-. Beryl-. Wanted to keep him, but once Metalia took over fully…"
Welp, the Universe is going to be destroyed by Chaos in 2-4 years then.

Because without Endymion and the Golden Crystal its impossible for Sailor Moon to reach the level needed to stop Chaos.

And nothing else in the universe can stop Chaos.

Orange Light is an inherently corruptive force, so realistically it would be resisted like any other type of corruptive force trying to alter them.

That said, it is Zoat's story, and as shown with Mazikeen hand waving the Silver Crystal he can just write them doing it anyways.

Orange light isn't corruptive, None of the seven lights are corruptive. Sure, some of them have horrifying side effects and can drive you crazy, but as a whole, the emotional spectrum is neither good or evil. It's neutral at worse. It's something that exists beyond paltry human concepts of morality or good/evil. Thus, the emotional spectrum would not be resisted.

Calling the orange light corruptive is tantamount to calling life itself corruptive, because it represents an isolated fundamental aspect of life, and all it does is to take the desire and avarice that already existed inside you to bring it to the surface. Yes, the orange light sometimes drives you crazy, but as we've seen in most of the OL corps in this story, that's not always the case, and it's perfectly possible to wield the orange light without going insane.

"I have been studying-."

"Don't bother." I sigh. "I should have realised that a random Dark Elf wizard wouldn't have access to Sandro's notebook. So you're Sandro, right?"
Good to see OL is smart enough to work it out too. Honestly, he fooled most of us, especially those not familiar with the 'Might and Magic' settings. I suppose the clues would be subtle if anyone went back and looked for them...

That is true. And OL knows of weirder DC Heroes. Like Deadman, who is a literal ghost who possesses people's bodies to affect the living world. A skeletal being who's still walking around is nothing.

"Ahh. That… Not entirely. A necromancer of my experience will usually have a technique or two to avoid Final Death. Though it would have been inconvenient, for both of us. Oh, ah, your surmise as correct: the woman you call Mazikeen was indeed below, and in rude health when I left her."
Like I said: Any good mage worth their salt makes themself very hard to kill. Lichedom being only one option. Pretty sure at least one Forgotten Realms villain used the 'possess pre-made clone' method, even.

I nod. "Good, thank you. Still on board for finding Angelica?"

"Certainly! Though I should recover the rest of my artefacts. If you will excuse me?"
Tracking her will be a little trickier, though, since OL doesn't really have any useful thaumic samples of her, does he?

"By all means. I've got a few things to check up on, too."

He nods, and then turns away and heads towards the entrance to D-Point.

"Hghhrrr-hghhrrr."
Oh? Sounds like someone got revived who we didn't expect to see.

I look around-. Huh. I wasn't sure-. I transition over to the woman in blasted rags lying on the arctic snow, extend my environmental shield over her and fabricate some clothing over her dangerously cold body.

"Is your name actually Beryl, or something else?"
That's a good question, given her reincarnate nature.

She staggers to her feet, bent over, arms hugging her torso. "W-what?"

"Sebastián and Ao prefer to use their names from this life, rather than their past life. But I don't know which set of memories stand out more to you."
Honestly, I'd have been surprised if Metalia didn't simply wipe her mind entirely when it moved in. Unless the Crystal took care of that.

Though she will have been missing for several years or so, so picking up her life might be tricky.

She nods stiffly.

"Anything we need to know right now?"

"The-. The cats are alive, in a cage in the dungeons. Prince… Endymion… He's dead. I-. Beryl-. Wanted to keep him, but once Metalia took over fully…"
He was dead when last you looked. Sailor Moon's spell probably sorted that out, even if she didn't know she had to. Open-ended wishes are like that.

"I understand. Best go and give the girls the news."

I glance over at the Pillar of Bones, where Ao is waiting… I wave my right arm at him in an attempt to signal that he can-. He waves back, and then vanishes is a shower of petals.
Probably headed to give Sebastian a big victory kiss... 😘

Ladies, please. This is surely not the strangest thing you've seen in your careers.

"Oh, knock it off!"

"Ehh?!" Guardian Moon stare at me is if I've taken leave of my senses. "What do you mean, 'knock it off'?" She points at Sandro. "That's a walking skeleton!"
Accurate, yet so very wrong. Typical Usagi, really.

"Technically speaking, it would be more accurate to refer to me as a liche. 'Skeleton' is usually used to refer to animated bones without a sophisticate intelligence."

"Oh." She nods, then points at Sandro again. "That's a walking liche!"
..And so is that. Honestly, if I didn't know there was a thousand years or so between them, I'd never believe this ditz would become queen of the world.

"This is Sandro, and he's at least fifteen percent of the reason we're all alive right now. He's the one who drew out the dark energy so that your Crystal could purge it."

Planetary scan, summarise casualty figures.
I suppose the Crystal did a lot of the heavy lifting, though Venus and the Kings can take a good chunk of the credit too.

Compliance.

"
And -Guardian Mercury, if you would please confirm the general state of the world- I think you'll find-"
Assuming her computer still works, if Metalia burned their power stations.

Guardian Mercury fiddles with her goggles.

"-that the death toll from this was mercifully low. Despite the billions transformed into Youma, the population now is not all that much lower than available census records say it should be."
Thank goodness for casual reality-warping princesses. Hopefully none of their families were impacted.

Because Mars is a mystic, with supernatural senses good enough to pick up youma sneaking around Tokyo.

Sandro shrugs. "Honestly, I'm as surprised as you are. May I continue?"

Guardian Moon frowns, but appears to accept that. "I guess…"
Oh, hush. Be nice, dear, and thank the elf Liche.

Sandro nods, and continues towards the D-Point entrance. "Have a pleasant day, dear girl."

"Huh, that was-." She sees who's standing next to me. "That's Queen Beryl!"
...And here we go again already.

I mean, she's maybe familiar with her Paul giving people the benefit of the doubt, but this would be an extreme case.

Guardian Mars frowns at Beryl for a moment. "She doesn't feel evil either."

"Whaaaaaaat?!"
Ah, yes. Good thing the Senshi have magically toughened bodies, or Usagi's yells would get uncomfortable.

Beryl relaxes slightly, but I close my eyes for a moment. "I'm glad to hear that your death and reanimation had no long term psychological consequences. Beryl says that the cats are still alive, so we can head in and pick them up, and then I can fly you all back to Japan."
Notice that he made no comment about Endymion. Hopefully he turns out to be fine, otherwise Usagi is going to go ballistic...

Given all the other weird shit in the last few... Days? Weeks? I suspect that settling back in will be easier than she thinks.

"I… Don't think that would be a.. good idea."

Warning! Avarice detected!
...True, keeping mum about her part in things would be smart. If anyone even believed her, given it would sound insane...

Presumably running on fumes, given that he's, you know, running. Hopefully OL can give him a top-up or something.

And it's really not that unusual in this setting. Admittedly, the Mamoru/Usagi age-gap was only a couple of years...

I expect we'll see a brief reunion with Luna and Artemis the space cats, and find out if Mamoru is among the living or not. Although between Usagi and Sandro, they can probably do something to fix it if he's still dead. And then Sandro will have to work out how to locate Angelica. Wonder where she ended up?

You mean the DC main character Paul? Because we haven't heard shit from the local SI Paul from Sailor Moon?

Meh if she's old enough to fight for the survival of humanity, she's old enough to drink, she's old enough to drive, she's old enough to vote, she's old enough to fuck. For the record I only support this outside of a fictional world if we are also fighting alien energy vampires for the fate of humanity.

I mean, this is a weird mashup universe. So it might be anime Galaxia who's possessed by Chaos and just needs Usagi's brand of "talk no-jutsu" to purge Chaos from her and let it naturally disperse into the universe like it's supposed to be.

Orange light isn't corruptive, None of the seven lights are corruptive. I generally treat it as corruptive. I mean, it's not dhar or anything, the light doesn't have a mind of its own, but being empowered by something that rewards an increasingly extreme mindset would be corrupting by itself, before we get into the fact that it actively encourages that mindset directly. Self-discipline will let you control it and self-reflection will ultimately enable you to master it, but it does change you.
Ladies, please. This is not the strangest thing you've seen in your careers.
At this point in their careers and not counting past life memories, it may well be.
Thanks goodness for casual reality-warping princesses. Hopefully none of their families were impacted.
That's not what they were doing. Remember, none of the people involved in the planning actually knew how bullshit the Silver Crystal is. They were just aiming to substitute the dark magic in the coverted youma with its power for long enough to make sure people didn't die.
Oh, hush. Be nice, dear, and thank the elf.
What elf?
You mean the DC main character Paul? Because we haven't heard shit from the local SI Paul from Sailor Moon?
I think Venus mentioned it in her point of view section.
Meh if she's old enough to fight for the survival of humanity, she's old enough to drink
That's 20 in Japan, so she's not. Sure, it's something like 5 in Britain, but we're an outlier.
she's old enough to drive
16 for a small motorbike in Japan, so no. 15 and 9 months in Britain for some reason, so that's actually possible.
she's old enough to vote
20 in Japan, 18 in Britain.
she's old enough to fuck.
So, no. Glad to hear it.
For the record I only support this outside of a fictional world if we are also fighting alien energy vampires for the fate of humanity.
I firmly support abstinence for energy-vampire fighters too. Though since the Japanese national age of consent is 12, that part might not actually be illegal.

Sailor moon can probably revive him as well if she tries hard enough, all that needs to happen is for Sandro to hear them talk about it like if they ask him for help before he goes away and for him to point out that their own revival is 90% their own work because what he did was temporary.

Eh, from what we have seen he isn't even in the worse half of people Paul has worked with. Helps that he is both polite and efficient. Not like Paul doesn't also have a plan to kill everyone he meets.

"Oh." She nods, then points at Sandro again. "That's a walking liche!"
Cute. And very much on point for her character.

I'm not here to police his personal conduct anyway.
No, but you could let him make an informed decision rather than continue to be manipulated. Especially if you are going to dump tech on him as is the usual practice when meeting another Paul.

"Sebastián and Ao prefer to use their names from this life, rather than their past life. But I don't know which set of memories stand out more to you."

"Beryl… That's my actually name… In both lives."
'stands'
'my actual'
or
'actually my'
I glance over at the Pillar of Bones, where Ao is waiting… I wave my right arm at him in an attempt to signal that he can-. He waves back, and then vanishes is a shower of petals.
'in'
"Technically speaking, it would be more accurate to refer to me as a liche. 'Skeleton' is usually used to refer to animated bones without a sophisticate intelligence."
'sophisticated'

I'm not here to police his personal conduct anyway.
I mean, he already knows that Blue Lantern Paul, for example, is married to Zorina. And I don't think the Illustres knows that this version of him is unaware of Venus's actual age, or even that they're actually together. Besides, the Illustres is just passing through.

No offense, but you've already kind of undermined your own point on that one. Out of all the orange lanterns that we've seen in this story, the overwhelming majority of them have no trouble wielding the orange light. Sure, we've seen a few examples of people succumbing to it, but the overhelming majority of OL corps members are perfectly fine, and you haven't shown them actually struggling with the orange light's influence on-page.
