With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Maybe don't be so enthusiastic.

Aside from how you handle a combat scenario, this can also show how you handle opponents that aren't exactly standard people.

Casually killing someone that may be intelligent is not a good look.

No worse than the actual Justice League did. Remember Wally's first trophy, or Black Canary trying to outright execute Duke when he was already defeated?

Yah, a demerit for not considering the possibility of sapient robots, but otherwise they're doing a lot of things right. Risk plays the frat boy but has a sharp brain, and Nmandi is playing to his strengths, and together the two of then make a good team it seems.
I don't think they're doing enough damage to the robots that they would get irreparably damaged, assuming their CPUs are located in their heads. More, after roundhousing one of them, it exploded, which means it's disposable, faildangerous and probably not sentient

I may be getting the cultural context wrong, but Risk grew up in a trailer park and has never even thought of going to college. He isn't a frat boy.

Not sure exactly how BR549 meant it, but 'Frat Boy' is a general purpose slur meaning the kind of young man who appears to be coasting on a single personality trait in. Going to college has nothing to do with it other than the origination of the slur.

It could also be an AI, in which case: still murder.

Feels like you're reaching for a reason to criticize them here. While it's true actual AI have rights, it remains the fact that:

1. AIs are very rare, while non-intelligent robots are very common (by superhero standards). If a some low grade attack bots are rushing at you like a human mooks, it's fair to make the assumption that they are not in fact AIs. You'll know it's an AI when they start ranting at you.

2. Robots are resilient opponents who, much like zombies, can get back even when heavily damaged. It's dangerous to leave an operational one behind you, and Nnambdi made a point of saying how he's not even bullet resistant. Making sure to very thoroughly destroy them is good sense, not savaging a downed opponent for no reason.

3. Robots can also report back through networks, so yes you ideally would like to destroy their processing center.

Now yes it is theoretically possible that some party could produce an army of AI mookbots who all have genuine people personalities with inner lives, and then you don't want to kill them. However no one is known to do that, so the risk is low. If it becomes a known thing, our heroes would reevaluate their approach. In the meantime, smashing up some robot soldiers seems only good sense.

Unfortunately, fraternity membership is not required to become a frat boy. Nor even college attendance, though that helps a lot.

'Frat Boy' is a general purpose slur

And here I thought "'stupid' is a slur" was the worst take I'd ever hear on the subject. Most insults are not slurs, you ninny.

I'm not sure anymore how many people know that 'slur' is not a synonym for 'insult.' EDIT: It may depend on what dictionary you're using, though, since the one I checked just now suggests that it is basically a synonym for 'insult' ('a disparaging remark').

I can't sleep.

I sit up in bed, pushing the duvet off me. And I close my eyes for a moment to feel the mood of the house. Dad's asleep, thank God. I know he was worried about how my first day would go… Honestly, I was in a Justice League base. I was safer there than here. Tibbet the Brownie is using the magical silent vacuum cleaner to tidy up the living room. None of my mentors are lurking anywhere, which…

I kind of feel that they were trying to throw me in the deep end. Total immersion learning, like going to France to learn French. And it didn't kill me or anything, but I feel a lot better about having an actual structure to learning magic. Having an actual mentor who can set homework and check that I'm doing things right and safely. A carousel of weirdos in trench coats who turn up for a day or two a month isn't what I want.

So what is it? Left over excitement? A bit, but they'll all be there for our next lesson. Apprehension? Molly's going to want to know everything. But given what we had to do to keep the Anti-Life off a few streets-.

Wait a second.

I wave my right hand, and my mirror shoots from one side of my room to the other, leaning against the opposite wall like it had never been anywhere else. Shaking my head, I get out of bed.

There's a knock on the inside of the mirror, but it's muffled.

I slide on my slippers, pull a little starlight down from the night sky through my bedroom window and walk across the room.

Inside the mirror, Toyman prods its surface with… Something that looks like the wire loop from a wire maze game.

I frown at him. "Why are you here?"

He says something, but it's backwards and upside down and I can't understand it. Hm. Well, Tibbet didn't react to him being in my house, so he probably doesn't mean me any harm. I-.

What's he doing?

He's gotten a pair of mirror shades out of one of his pockets, and he's holding it up and turning around…

"Did you copy that from Mirror Master?"

Toyman is still talking nonsense, but the little Toyman in the reflected reflection is talking normally. Just quietly, because he's not very big.

"No. Mirrors contain the reflections of things. There's not as much difference between a reflection of a thing and the whole of the thing as people think."

"Will you let me out, great sorcerer?"

"I don't know. Sneaking into my room in the middle of the night's a bit weird."

"You were not asleep."

"That doesn't make it less weird." But it's not nice to keep someone in a mirror if they're not actually attacking me. Other mirror…

I walk over to my cupboard and open it, revealing the mirror on the side of the door. Angle it so that I can see the wall mirror, then stick my arm in and pull.

I step back as Toyman falls onto the floor.

"So?"

He sort of looks around, coughs, then jumps up. "How did you know where I was?"

I shrug. The full answer would be something like 'weird old men threw magic at me until I could just feel everything' but… Do Japanese martial arts master actually blindfold people and do stuff like that?

"Magic."

He frowns and opens his coat… Where he's got a lot of strips of paper with Japanese writing on them. I don't speak any Japanese, but there's a tiny amount of magic…

"I thought these would protect me."

"Why? They're just paper."

"I copied them perfectly."

"Unless you've made a deal with some sort of calligraphy spirit, that isn't enough to make them work. You need to actually imbue them with magic."

"Oh." He lets his cloak fall shut. "I thought that part was just trade protection."

"If you drew them perfectly and left them in a shrine for a few years, then they might start to work."

"How is your vacuum moving on its own?"

"It's not. Tibbet just didn't want you to see him." I should be asleep, I've got school tomor-. Today. But he comes from Japan. I can't just kick him out. "Look, we've got a spare room. Do you want to sleep here, and go home tomorrow?"

"It is already tomorrow in Japan."

"It's already tomorrow here. Shouldn't you be more tired than me?"

"I have drunk seventeen cans of energy drink. I will not sleep for two days."

His aura does seem a bit… Wobbly, as he walks over to the window and looks out.

"We should fight crime."

"I don't know if that's a good idea."

He turns back to me. "You don't fight crime?"

"Not really." I shrug. "I've only just started learning how to use magic properly. I've never fought anything that I didn't take by surprise. You?"

"I spend most of my time in a workshop. The Anti-Life granted me freedom to do what I like for the first time I can remember."

I smile. "Maybe I should introduce you to Molly. After school."

"And now?"

I don't feel even slightly tired. I could make myself go to sleep, but it wouldn't be hard to just push my tiredness into other people…

"I suppose it won't hurt to walk around for a bit." I click my fingers, and my pyjamas swap places with my messing around clothes. And then I give the star its light back. "Come on."

"No robes? Or a suit, like Mister Zatara?"

"No." I give the sound from our footsteps for the next hour to any fey that wants it, and walk silently towards my bedroom door. "I didn't get into many fights, and I didn't know how to make anything that would help with the fights I did get into."

"I haven't been in any fights at all."

I lead the way down the stairs, heading towards the kitchen. "Really?"

"I make robots. I have to stay in my command centre, otherwise I wouldn't be able to control them properly. But I want to."

I frown. "Why?"

"I want to make friends. I can't make real friends from behind a computer screen."

"Okay." I open the bread bin and take out the bag of loaf heels. "I suppose fighting with people could help with that." I walk towards the back door.

"Why do you have bread?"

"To pay for information. Stool pigeons love bread."

Is this the guy from the future who's learning magic?

Timmy here and talk of magicians and magic users in general brings to mind a question. Good old Paul off the top of my head has permanently killed the Chaos Lord, basically wiped out the majority of the leadership of hell, Stop the invasion from heaven, and I'm pretty sure he took out one of their major players. Oh and he also basically bitch slapped Zeus to mortality, and casually decided which God would be in charge now. Also before that got Hera to divorce Zeus.

I'm sure there's more than I'm not remembering at the moment, the question is how do the magic users of the world besides Constantine and Zatara view Paul?

Well that's...one way to fulfill your dreams.

I'm reminded of a story I read a few years ago about how Covid actually improved someone's health.

The person in question had been feeling aches and pains for years and just assumed it was their age, but when Covid broke out, they got a lot more careful about their health and saw a doctor.

Turns out that their organs have been failing, so they had treatment for that.

You forgot some of the divine shenanigans he got up to during Anti-Life, or going through a Dream Storm and I think I remember him taking down the guy who created Atlantis's magic traditons.

I'm sure there's more than I'm not remembering at the moment, the question is how do the magic users of the world besides Constantine and Zatara view Paul?
At this point, anyone who doesn't have him at the top of their Do Not Fuck With list has their heads shoved so far up their own asses that they can see daylight out the other side.

Not sure how much of that is known even among the 'magical' public. The other events were basically completely in the open. Oh and what he did to Doctor Fate as well.

I know he was worried about how my first day would go… Honestly, I was in a Justice League base. I was safer there than here. Tibbet the Brownie is using the magical silent vacuum cleaner to tidy up the living room. None of my mentors are lurking anywhere, which…
From context (and other posts,) this would be the erstwhile Tim Hunter. Basically 'Harry Potter if he were in DC' (but he was made several years before the first Potter novel, I believe.) Destined to be either Humanity's greatest magical guardian... Or it's worst magical tyrant.

Given his canonical mentors were basically the Trenchcoat Brigade of John Constantine, Mister E, Doctor Occult and the Phantom Stranger, that's an accurate way to put it.

So what is it? Left over excitement? A bit, but they'll all be there for our next lesson. Apprehension? Molly's going to want to know everything. But given what we had to do to keep the Anti-Life off a few streets-.

Wait a second.
Molly being his childhood neighbour and girlfriend. Evidently not suffering quite as badly here as she did in the comics... Yet.

I wave my right hand, and my mirror shoots from one side of my room to the other, leaning against the opposite wall like it had never been anywhere else. Shaking my head, I get out of bed.

There's a knock on the inside of the mirror, but it's muffled.
Ah, a trap, I see. One of the mookbots? No, they wouldn't be tapping on it.

I slide on my slippers, pull a little starlight down from the night sky through my bedroom window and walk across the room.

Inside the mirror, Toyman prods its surface with… Something that looks like the wire loop from a wire maze game.
It probably is the handle for a wire maze. And quite likely a sensor and a stun baton, depending on design. They're usually electric in some way.

I frown at him. "Why are you here?"

He says something, but it's backwards and upside down and I can't understand it. Hm. Well, Tibbet didn't react to him being in my house, so he probably doesn't mean me any harm. I-.
Only drawback of a magical confinement system.

What's he doing?

He's gotten a pair of mirror shades out of one of his pockets, and he's holding it up and turning around…
He is a super-genius, of course he's going to work out the trick and counteract it quickly.

"Did you copy that from Mirror Master?"

Toyman is still talking nonsense, but the little Toyman in the reflected reflection is talking normally. Just quietly, because he's not very big.
I suspect Evan would be amused to see the blatant trick copying. Possibly slap Tim around a bit if he could, but chuffed.

"No. Mirrors contain the reflections of things. There's not as much difference between a reflection of a thing and the whole of the thing as people think."

"Will you let me out, great sorcerer?"
Hard to tell if he's being deferential or sarcastic, isn't it?

"I don't know. Sneaking into my room in the middle of the night's a bit weird."

"You were not asleep."
You still snuck into his room. Just because he's aware of the intrusion doesn't excuse it.

I assume if they were hostile, he'd be a little warier about freeing a captive from it.

I step back as Toyman falls onto the floor.

"So?"
Yes, please do share with the crowd as to why you were creeping in a prospective teammate's room late at night?

He sort of looks around, coughs, then jumps up. "How did you know where I was?"

I shrug. The full answer would be something like 'weird old men threw magic at me until I could just feel everything' but… Do Japanese martial arts master actually blindfold people and do stuff like that?
...Maybe? I mean, in the DC Universe, that actually can awaken the kind of sixth sense it's reputed to.

"Magic."

He frowns and opens his coat… Where he's got a lot of strips of paper with Japanese writing on them. I don't speak any Japanese, but there's a tiny amount of magic…
Ofuda. Sadly, I suspect Hiro still has a lot to learn about the mystical applications of his culture...

"I thought these would protect me."

"Why? They're just paper."

"I copied them perfectly."
...A lot to learn.

"Unless you've made a deal with some sort of calligraphy spirit, that isn't enough to make them work. You need to actually imbue them with magic."

"Oh." He lets his cloak fall shut. "I thought that part was just trade protection."
Unlike, say, the Light's scry wards, there does need to be a little outside application involved.

Roughly the opposite side of the planet, basically.

"It is already tomorrow in Japan."

"It's already tomorrow here. Shouldn't you be more tired than me?"
I suppose Zeta Tubes are remarkably useful for avoiding Jet lag. What's the bet Hiro hacked the one he has access to, for wider access?

"I have drunk seventeen cans of energy drink. I will not sleep for two days."

His aura does seem a bit… Wobbly, as he walks over to the window and look out.
Surprised he isn't vibrating.

"We should fight crime."

"I don't know if that's a good idea."
Because it's a school night, for a start. And this region of Britain probably doesn't see much in the way of street crime.

He turns back to me. "You don't fight crime?"

"Not really." I shrug. "I've only just started learning how to use magic properly. I've never fought anything that I didn't take by surprise. You?"
Admittedly, surprise is a good way to deal with a lot of magical threats. Often with the classic 'half a brick in a sock' trick.

"I spend most of my time in a workshop. The Anti-Life grated me freedom to do what I like for the first time I can remember."

I smile. "Maybe I should introduce you to Molly. After school."
I imagine the squeeing would be considerable.

"And now?"

I don't feel even slightly tired. I could make myself go to sleep, but it wouldn't be hard to just push my tiredness into other people…
Like, say, Hiro? Make him sleep off those energy drinks?

"I suppose it won't hurt to walk around for a bit." I click my fingers, and my pyjamas swap places with my messing around clothes. And then I give the star its light back. "Come on."

"No robes? Or a suit, like Mister Zatara?"
'Messing around' clothes being jeans, sneakers and a tough jacket, I expect.

"No." I give the sound from our footsteps for the next hour to any fey that wants it, and walk silently towards my bedroom door. "I didn't get into many fights, and I didn't know how to make anything that would help with the fights I did get into."

"I haven't been in any fights at all."
That is a good point. Most things with magic don't get overly bothered by mundane armour. I expect OL will help him correct that before long. A spell eater, some combat armour...

I lead the way down the stairs, heading towards the kitchen. "Really?"

"I make robots. I have to stay in my command centre, otherwise I wouldn't be able to control them properly. But I want to."
And hanging around super-babe gynoids can only be entertaining for so long.

I frown. "Why?"

"I want to make friends. I can't make real friends from behind a computer screen."
Admirable. But you could go about it a little less creepily.

"Okay." I open the bread bin and take out the bag of loaf heels. "I suppose fighting with people could help with that." I walk towards the back door.

"Why do you have bread?"

"To pay for information. Stool pigeons love bread."
And he's probably not making an analogy there.

Science and Magic, battling side-by-side. I assume mookbots will be showing up shortly to harass them. Still, it's going to be an odd friendship there. Young men fated to be masters of their respective fields. What'll be interesting to see is if they can work together and cover each other's weakness well...

I'm sure there's more than I'm not remembering at the moment, the question is how do the magic users of the world besides Constantine and Zatara view Paul?

I have to imagine it's not terribly different from how non-magical people view him, to be honest. Paul is one of the most powerful Orange Lanterns in the universe, very likely in the top dozen non-Maltusian spectrum users altogether, and is not shy about hiding who he is or what he's done. He has so many outrageous accomplishments under his belt both magical and non that it doesn't really matter if you are familiar with only part of his work. Is killing Demon Lords more insane than ending entire civilizations? Is entreating with the Endless more impossible than recreating the Orange Lantern Corps? Is overcoming an angel jihad more impressive than baking a giant cake?

Regardless of your magical aptitude, if you're in the know about Paul, you know he is incredibly powerful, very hard to kill, not to be fucked with without massive amounts of preparation, and generally a fairly pleasant if quirky bloke.

Magical people don't have the they also have no idea what a Lord of Chaos or Order is. Most normal people probably still believe that the Greek gods aren't real. So the only real in your face thing Paul did as far as the regular public is concerned is the giant cake.

I would think it would be awe and terror, but that dipshit henge mage behind the Magical drugs didn't seem to have that big of a reaction to trying beat Paul.

Would anyone be able to point out the chapter where Paul and Kalmin are talking about the weaponizability of emotions and Kalmin scoffs about Hope, before Paul points out that it was the emotion that had fueled his entire career?
I just cannot seem to find it, my google-fu is too weak!
