Jade and I consider the house with the 'For Sale' sign in front of it.

"Hm."

"I'm not keen."

"What's wrong with it?

"Well, it's brick-built, which is good-."

"That's not what's wrong with it."

"No, but I think we should talk about what we're looking for as well as what we're not."

She rolls her eyes, and then allows me to continue.

"But it's not big enough."

"How many children were you planning on having?"

"In total, or per decade?"

That earns me a frown. "'Per decade'?"

"Ah." I nod. "Two seems reasonable."

"So, four in total?"

"If four is what you want, then-."

"No, why-?" And then she gets it. "I'm not getting older."

"Well, no, I worked out that you probably wouldn't want to look nineteen forever-."

She nods, more or less to herself. "Decay, right, that's your thing."

"No, it's the opposite of my thing. I hate decay."

"So we could keep having children."

"Yes, though I suppose it could make things awkward, having children of different generations. Maybe we could ask Nyssa or Talia how their father handled it?"

She snorts quietly. "Why not just ask one of Vandal Savage's kids?"

"I did have a look, but the only one I know about, I only know her supervillain name and not her real name and she's not using it at the moment." I make a gesture of helplessness with both forearms. "Genetic scans are pointless because just about everyone on this planet is descended from Vandal Savage to a degree."

Even the Amazons, which was a surprise. Not Diana or Donna, obviously, but all of the rest.

"Didn't come up a lot in the comics..?"

"I know Vandal's original name was Vandar Adg of the Blood Tribe, but I think we only really see one of his children. Only one who got any characterisation, anyway. And aside from her girlfriend's pet name, she was just called 'Scandal' by everyone."

"'Scandal'."

"Yes, Cheshire?"

That earns me an elbow.

"I picked Cheshire because I was disappearing from somewhere I didn't want to be. And because I liked the idea of knowing what was really going on when no one else did. Was Scandal a journalist?"

"No-." I frown. "You don't think it was her actual name, do you?"

"We know a guy called 'Magnificus' and a girl called 'Beautia'."

"Yes, but Savage wouldn't name his daughter after a small crime. I mean, you wouldn't name someone 'Larcenia', would you?"

"It's better than Scandal. And I don't think 'Murderie' or 'Tratoria' would be better."

"There's a Fury called 'Gilotina'."

She frowns dubiously. "Alekto, Megaera, Tilphousia… And Gilotina."

"No, the… Apokoliptian Furies, not-."

A car horn sounds behind us, and we both turn around-.

A surprised looking Warren Crock waves at us from his car window.

I haven't… Really spent a lot of time-.

Jade's already walking over to him, so I hurry after her.

A lot of time with the Crock family. The point of meeting them in the first place was to help Paula, Artemis and Jade with social relationships. But I've really only seem them since with Jade…

"Hey Uncle Warren. What brings you here?"

"I was driving home from work." He cranes his neck, looking past us. "Are you looking at a house?"

"Paul was trying to explain what was wrong with it, but we got distracted."

"Oh, hey." He turns to me. "If I'm blocking you-."

I smile as Jade closes her eyes for a moment. "Not that kind of distracted, Uncle Warren."

"Okay, okay. So what's wrong with it?"

Jade turns to me. "That's what I asked."

"Between the fortifications we're going to need to add and the space we'll need for a workshop, it's not big enough, and…" I half-turn back and gesture to the garden area around it. "The plot size isn't big enough to expand it as much as it would need to without destroying the garden. And it's part of the Home-Owner's Association, so that's an automatic 'no'."

Jade's eyes narrow slightly. "I don't think H.O.A.s in Wisconsin are run by the Skeevers Family."

"No, just the biggest busybody in the neighbourhood, and that's if you're lucky. There's no way that we could get approval for the modifications that we'll need."

"Ah, yeah." Warren nods. "He's right about that. You wouldn't believe the fight I had over window boxes a couple of years ago. Anything structural? You're outta luck."

"Hm."

"But you're..? Seriously moving to the area?"

Jade nods. "Not right now, but in a few years that's the plan."

He beams. "Well that's great! Why-"

Alert!

"-don't-?"

I throw up a shield around the three of us as-.

As Hawkwoman pulls out of her dive to glower at me.

"You."

"Ah, they told you, then."

Jade glances at her uncle, hands already on her concealed blades. "Uncle Warren, we'll catch up with you later."

"Ah… Sure thing, Jade." He puts his car in gear as I allow the shield to evaporate. "I'll let you get on with things."

"Ah… Sure thing, Jade." He puts his car in gear as I allow the shield to evaporate. "I'll let you get on with things."
Are we sure this isn't Paul's uncle? There's something dryly English about this response to a couple becoming encased in an orange bubble while an angry bird-person superhero swoops down onto them.

Or maybe having a sports-themed assassin as a brother and living in the DC universe in general just inures one to such things.

Hawkwoman now have experience Paul making a mess in her home when he by himself and Paul making a mess in her home when she was with him

if Paul ever go near Thanagar again, she is gonna cuff him to her

I am excited to see Hawkwoman express how much she hates Paul right now, as well as Hawkman's thoughts on the subject.

I'm really hoping the League is mostly on Paul's side here, because "I stopped an expansionist Empire from conquering another Empire and [redacted] most of the people living there." is something you'd think they'd support, even if they like Shayera.

He unintentionally helped Queen plant lady pull a Reach on a Thanagarian planet and then refused to fix it.

Under Orange Lanterns own logic she would be perfectly within her rights to kill him right now.

Yeah, the fact that he was in favor of helping them get Nth metal until now, but decided that prior plans took a back seat to "No summoning demons by feeding entire solar systems to them by blowing up a sun, but their slaves peacefully voted to leave and I didn't consider that something that needed the same level of active intervention" is pretty easily defended, here...

Jade and I consider the house with the 'For Sale' sign in front of it.
Ah, house-hunting, eh? And with an episode title that could tie back to the Hyathis thing or be a reference to something on Earth. If nothing else, OL and Jade are looking to put down roots. 😏

"Hm."

"I'm not keen."
I'm guessing this one is going to be a fail somehow. let's see what the happy couple's opinion is.

"What's wrong with it?

"Well, it's brick-built, which is good-."
Certainly gives a homey feeling, yes.

"That's not what's wrong with it."

"No, but I think we should talk about what we're looking for as well as what we're not."
Like minimum sizes, perhaps. Or sufficient rooms to have several kids rooms and a home gym or workshop...

She rolls her eyes, and then allows me to continue.

"But it's not big enough."
Just what I was thinking.

"How many children were you planning on having?"

"In total, or per decade?"

That earns me a frown. "'Per decade'?"
You are engaged to someone who can give mortality the middle finger. A long life in not unreasonable.

"Ah." I nod. "Two seems reasonable."

"So, four in total?"

"If four is what you want, then-."
And what combinations do you want? All boys? All girls? 50/50? Given OL, it's a natural certainty that he can fiddle with genes. Heck, he can even Danner them in the womb.

"No, why-?" And then she gets it. "I'm not getting older."

"Well, no, I worked out that you probably wouldn't want to look nineteen forever-."
And every time he gives her a heal, he's resetting her biological timers. Never mind life-extension treatments she can get as a Darkstar.

She nods, more or less to herself. "Decay, right, that's your thing."

"No, it's the opposite of my thing. I hate decay."
And she can look forwards to always having a young, attentive beau not matter how she ages.

"So we could keep having children."

"Yes, though I suppose it could make things awkward, having children of different generations. Maybe we could ask Nyssa or Talia how their father handled it?"

She snorts quietly. "Why not just ask one of Vandal Savage's kids?"
He's not exactly the best role model as a father or the founder of a dynasty. I bet a lot of them were the results of one-night stands.

"I did have a look, but the only one I know about, I only know her supervillain name and not her real name and she's not using it at the moment." I make a gesture of helplessness with both forearms. "Genetic scans are pointless because just about everyone on this planet is descended from Vandal Savage to a degree."
Scandal Savage might well be her given name. Easy enough to hide it by calling herself Scandy or something.

Even the Amazons, which was a surprise. Not Diana or Donna, obviously, but all of the rest.

"Didn't come up a lot in the comics..?"
For obvious reasons, of course, them not having any biological parents, more or less.

"I know Vandal's original name was Vandar Adg of the Blood Tribe, but I think we only really see one of his children. Only one who got any characterisation, anyway. And aside from her girlfriend's pet name, she was just called 'Scandal' by everyone."

"'Scandal'."
Given some names in this universe, it's not even that on the nose.

"Yes, Cheshire?"

That earns me an elbow.
To be fair, Paul, most people know you as ''Orange Lantern'.

"I picked Cheshire because I was disappearing from somewhere I didn't want to be. And because I liked the idea of knowing what was really going on when no one else did. Was Scandal a journalist?"

"No-." I frown. "You don't think it was her actual name, do you?"
More of an adventurer-mercenary, really.

"We know a guy called 'Magnificus' and a girl called 'Beautia'."

"Yes, but Savage wouldn't name his daughter after a small crime. I mean, you wouldn't name someone 'Larcenia', would you?"
That's an awkward name anyway. Magni and Beauty are at least virtues.

"It's better than Scandal. And I don't think 'Murderie' or 'Tratoria' would be better."

"There's a Fury called 'Gilotina'."
Because 'Poor literacy iz kwel!'

She frowns dubiously. "Alekto, Megaera, Tilphousia… And Gilotina."

"No, the… Apokoliptian Furies, not-."
With such evocative names as Lashina the whip-user, Stompa the stamper or Bernadeth the thermal-knife wielder. Ah, Kirby...

A car horn sounds behind us, and we both turn around-.

A surprised looking Warren Crock waves at us from his car window.
Well, you were looking at houses in the family hometown.

I haven't… Really spent a lot of time-.

Jade's already walking over to him, so I hurry after her.
Let the missus handle the social stuff here, OL.

A lot of time with the Crock family. The point of meeting them in the first place was to help Paula, Artemis and Jade with social relationships. But I've really only seem them since with Jade…

"Hey Uncle Warren. What brings you here?"
Well, if you settle down here, you'll probably get guy time with her family.

"I was driving home from work." He cranes his neck, looking past us. "Are you looking at a house?"

"Paul was trying to explain what was wrong with it, but we got distracted."
Ah, neatly dodging the intimation that they're planning to move here.

"Oh, hey." He turns to me. "If I'm blocking you-."

I smile as Jade closes her eyes for a moment. "Not that kind of distracted, Uncle Warren."
TO be fair, they probably seem like a fun pair of newlyweds.

"Okay, okay. So what's wrong with it?"

Jade turns to me. "That's what I asked."
Perfect cue to explain.

Not unless you go underground, and then you run into trouble with the water and power routing.

Jade's eyes narrow slightly. "I don't think H.O.A.s in Wisconsin are run by the Skeevers Family."

"No, just the biggest busybody in the neighbourhood, and that's if you're lucky. There's no way that we could get approval for the modifications that we'll need."
I suspect no HOA's going to put up with superheroic shenanigans.

"Ah, yeah." Warren nods. "He's right about that. You wouldn't believe the fight I had over window boxes a couple of years ago. Anything structural? You're outta luck."

"Hm."
Still a strange concept to me, being Australian and not living in a planned suburb...

"But you're..? Seriously moving to the area?"

Jade nods. "Not right now, but in a few years that's the plan."
We'll see how accurate that plan is then...

He beams. "Well that's great! Why-"

Alert!

"-don't-?"
Really, this is why a suburban house is probably not a good place for them.

I throw up a shield around the three of us as-.

As Hawkwoman pulls out of her dive to glower at me.
Ah, she got the update from home, eh? Time to face the music.

"You."

"Ah, they told you, then."
And evidently she's quite tilted.

Jade glances at her uncle, hands already on her concealed blades. "Uncle Warren, we'll catch up with you later."

"Ah… Sure thing, Jade." He puts his car in gear as I allow the shield to evaporate. "I'll let you get on with things."
A very human reaction, not wanting to get caught in the crossfire. And remaining very calm to avoid drawing the birdwoman's ire.

And this is why I suspect a suburban lifestyle really isn't for them. I bet the HOA would take a dim view of random 'freaks' showing up out of nowhere with a nark on for OL. And god forbid if someone pulls up in orbit and drops a strike on their house. Sure, it might amazing defences, but what about the neighbours? 😏

This could be interesting if Paul plays it right, because I wonder how much of the story does either of the Hawks know?

I'm really hoping the League is mostly on Paul's side here, because "I stopped an expansionist Empire from conquering another Empire and [redacted] most of the people living there." is something you'd think they'd support, even if they like Shayera.

They were going to genocide the people of Alistair via sustained bombardment and maybe conquer the people from Dhor and Mosteel if they could swing it, when it comes to the factions involved in the war they were only better than Mosteel.

Edit: I see you added the missing context. Anyways the entire league would be against Thanagar on the argument, even their dislike of Hyathis is a little suspicious because the plant woman is arrogant, but she rules a multi species polity fairly, and has no problems making allies with reasonable people. Her enemies are Dhor the guys that invaded earth because they thought they could get away with it, and Mosteel the guys that though turning their star into a red giant killing everyone else in the star system was a good plan.

Hyathis is probably going to drop MAD plants on their planet as insurance now, if they try to be cute again the plants releases steel eating spores and their homeworld becomes a living hell for them.

Honestly, the Thanagarian approach may well be to put the main blame on Mosteel as Hyathis's ally: 'Hyathis's ally recruited escaped traitor-cultists and tried to kill everyone in the system with a star destroyer' could fit their desired narrative without having to lie about anything or even necessarily remind people that magic works and most Thanagarian magic is evil.
