"I don't know for certain. I could probably get access to the files if I asked, but I don't see the point. They probably knew that the camps existed, that Black people were being rounded up and moved to them, but I doubt that the Confederates were going to give clear answers if they'd asked what it was in aid of." I sigh. "I'd like to remind your American viewers is that Britain is the reason why the Confederates freed their slaves in the first place, and the reason why Africa and the Middle East don't have slavery. Or… Didn't. I understand that our waning influence has resulted in the practice resuming in some places."

Take two pictures drawn in different art styles. Tear a strip out of one and stick in over the front of the second. Except the one at the back is in three dimensions and has a finger sticking out. A big finger. Or-. No, it's more like many translucent images draw in different styles are stuck one on top of the other, and the finger reaches through all of them. The tip is about four feet fall and the finger nail is disconcertingly sharp, but worse, behind and above it I can just about make out the glowing, glowering yellow eyes of S'ivaa himself. The eyes are only open a crack, but…

Not every Asian on Earth 10 is gone. The Nazis decided to help Japan defeat China but didn't have a lot of manpower available due to the need to occupy Europe so they deployed a bioweapon that targeted the Han Chinese. It wasn't as precise as intended and also wiped out most of India's population, with the only surviving Indians being those who were in more remote/isolated areas.

The Indian sub-continent is primarily being colonized by the British and I assume China is being primarily colonized by Japan.

Overman didn't mention any other groups being wiped out by the bioweapon. Just Han Chinese and Indians.

Though sending any hypothetical children of Paul and Jade to Earth 10 would still probably be pretty weird.

So she's exactly the kind of horrible dictator the Thanagarian's claim.
I do get what you mean but, well, it's much easier to be a non-horrible dictator when you're a supreme ruler like she is compared to something like Thanagar's police state that encourages lots of bastards.

Kind of like Reinhard is a machiavellian bastard but he's still much better than the rest of the nobles he's walking over in LoGTH.

Scan for Hawkman… He's back in their home city. So he probably doesn't know that she's here. And while we could have a huge row in full view of the public…

I raise my eyebrows and point upwards with my right hand. Without altering her expression, she flaps her wings down hard and launches herself into the sky.

Jade and I look at each other.

"I can handle-." / "Do you want me-?"

I smile. "Yes."

She looks unimpressed. "To accompany you?"

Tactically, it's unwise. While Hawkwoman can't do much to me unless she's substantially upgraded her arsenal, an Nth metal mace would make a mess of Jade's exo-mantle and Hawkwoman is probably better at aerial combat than Jade. Politically, having a functionary with me might underline my political significance… But it also might look like I'm… Ganging up on her? That I'm so psychologically weak that I feel the need for reassurance? So, no. And organisationally… Are there facts that it might make sense to keep her on hand to keep me appraised off? I can't-.

"Are you working out the best way to say 'no'?"

"No, I'm giving due consideration to whether including you is a good idea or not."

"You'll still be in maser range and I can use your armour to listen in."

"Right." I lean forwards, lightly touching her jaw with my right hand as I kiss her, then don my armour and fly upwards.

[Which way were you leaning?]

"I was leaning towards 'no', but I wanted to consider everything."

[I think that would have been the correct choice. I'm going to go get a coffee.]

I get sight of Hawkwoman… Her mace is still on her belt, but she's clenching her right fist around the grip.

"Exo-mantles record, right? I might need a witness."

[Yes, they record and they back up those recordings to Maltus.]

"Neat. Going quiet now."

[And I've sent a message to Hawkman.]

Mm. Reasonable.

I smile as I pull level with Hawkwoman. "Alright, let's hear it."

"You murdered one of our admirals and stole four of our planets, and then you just came back here like it was nothing?"

"Yes."

"How long were you planning this?"

"I wasn't. It was all off the cuff."

"Millions of thanagarians are now enslaved to Hyathis, our EmpireBroken, and you're going house-hunting."

"Hawkwoman… What part of my diatribe after I killed Nabu led you to conclude that I was okay with slavery?"

"We don't own slaves!"

"I mean… You personally don't, no. But the aboriginal inhabitants of the worlds Thanagar conquered end up that way."

"They serve the Empire!"

"Yes. As slaves. To remove all room for doubt, I wasn't going to do anything about the Thanagarian Empire because I'm busy with more important things. The Psions, the Reach, the Spider Guild, the Dominion and Apokolips are all far worse, and Earth's my home, but that's not the same as being willing to ignore it when it's happening right in front of me."

Her breathing regularises slightly, and her grip loosens. Loosens to her normal weapon-wielding grip, but at least she's being more rational now.

"Did Batman approve that?"

"I don't actually work for Batman."

"Did he?"

"I haven't discussed it with him."

"Interstellar relations are part of the Justice League's remit."

"Ah. Feel free to bring that up at the next meeting. I think that everyone knows that the power ring means that I work for someone else."

"The Controllers approved this?"

"The Controllers like order. And they don't like it when pissant primitive would-be empires decide to make everyone's life difficult."

"Then they are enemies of Thanagar."

"Oh, please declare war on the Controllers. It will make my life much simpler."

[Hawkman's heading this way, fast.]

"I mean, you were basically assigned to Earth in the first place to spy on us."

"That wasn't the mission!"

"It totally was. I mean, what is this? What did you think you were going to get out of confronting me?"

"I like to make it clear how I feel about someone."

"You already made that clear with that ridiculous duel."

"That wasn't the same thing. That was proving that I wasn't weak. This is a declaration of enmity."

"Did that sound better in your language?"

"If I see you away from Earth-." She bites her tongue.

"What, kill me? You can try. And since I like Katar I probably wouldn't kill you in retaliation. We don't work together, Shayera. I don't get anything from you, and you don't get anything from me. The idea of fighting you is laughable to me-"

In the corner of my eye I see Hawkman approach, slowing from what I know to be his maximum speed… Probably because he sees that we're not fighting.

"-and did you know that Alstair has no equivalent to downside? If she ever took Thanagar no one would have to grow up in those conditions again."

Her right shoulder tenses, and Hawkman's there with his right hand on her left shoulder. She takes another moment before shrugging him off and flying away with a growl.

Hawkman watches her go for a few moments. Then he turns back to me.

"Orange Lantern."

"Hawkman. I suggest keeping her-."

"We were considering requesting asylum."

"Huh?"

"We are not unaware of the failings of Thanagarian society, Paul. And the things I have discovered about the cults-."

"That your government supports them while it tried to work out how they make Nth metal?"

"You knew?"

"It was a bit obvious."

"I.. see. Before your… Intervention, they might have let us go. Now, we would have to sleep with our eyes open."

"Why?" I raise my left fist. "They've got more admirals."

Yeah, she really wasn't thinking this through.

Did Paul know Hawkwoman grew up downside? Because that statement probably hit her in a way she hasn't been hit in a long time.

Hopefully Hawkman's ability to reamain civil with Paul like this will keep his wife from doing anything rash against him in the future.

I raise my eyebrows and point upwards with my right hand. Without altering her expression, she flaps her wings down hard and launches herself into the sky.
Yeah, best not to have any conversation like this anywhere public. I doubt Shayera is going to keep her voice down, and there's probably people filming as it is.

Jade and I look at each other.

"I can handle-." / "Do you want me-?"
Jade, you know with an opening like that...

I smile. "Yes."

She looks unimpressed. "To accompany you?"
...Yeah, OL, this is not the best time.

I can't-.
Even phasing wouldn't help much because Nth Metal. But having her nearby, keeping her distance might be helpful.

"Are you working out the best way to say 'no'?"

"No, I'm giving due consideration to whether including you is a good idea or not."
The last thing he wants is her getting mauled by Shayera, certainly.

"You'll still be in maser range and I can use your armour to listen in."

"Right." I lean forwards, lightly touching her jaw with my right hand as I kiss her, then don my armour and fly upwards.
I doubt Shayera's going to go for him, though, anger or no anger. Letting her cool down a moment is going to help.

[Which way were you leaning?]

"I was leaning towards 'no', but I wanted to consider everything."
And really, would Jade want to have to fight a nominal ally?

[I think that would have been the correct choice. I'm going to go get a coffee.]

I get sight of Hawkwoman… Her mace is still on her belt, but she's clenching her right fist around the grip.
At least that shows she wants to talk. If she reverses her grip to pull it out, though...

"Exo-mantles record, right? I might need a witness."

[Yes, they record and they back up those recordings to Maltus.]
Although if it's running through his armour, it might be limited to audiovisual only.

"Neat. Going quiet now."

[And I've sent a message to Hawkman.]
Definitely a good plan to get him on this.

Mm. Reasonable.

I smile as I pull level with Hawkwoman. "Alright, let's hear it."
If only to see how badly she's been misinformed.

"You murdered one of our admirals and stole four of our planets, and then you just came back here like it was nothing?"

"Yes."
Killing the admiral, yes, that's on him. The Antares worlds were never really theirs, and if they only had four planets flip to Alstair rule, they got off lightly.

"How long were you planning this?"

"I wasn't. It was all off the cuff"
Honestly, if they hadn't tried to kill him, he'd have simply come home no hassle.

"Millions of thanagarians are now enslaved to Hyathis, our EmpireBroken, and you're going house-hunting."

"Hawkwoman… What part of my diatribe after I killed Nabu led you to conclude that I was okay with slavery?"
Besides, how do you know what their living conditions are like? Just being ruled by Hyathis isn't instantly going to see them bound in chains and put to work by some nebulous overseer.

"We don't own slaves!"

"I mean… You personally don't, no. But the aboriginal inhabitants of the worlds Thanagar conquered end up that way."

"They serve the Empire!"
Oh? How's their pay situation, then? What's the minimum standard of living amongst the working class?

"Yes.
And again, they tried to kill him just for being there. They poked the bear, they get the claws.

Her breathing regularises slightly, and her grip loosens. Loosens to her normal weapon-wielding grip, but at least she's being more rational now.

"Did Batman approve that?"
Good to see she's not in fight mode anymore. Maybe now she'll listen to rational arguments instead of relying on cultural dogma.

"I don't actually work for Batman."

"Did he?"

"I haven't discussed it with him."
There'll probably be some exasperated grunting, but by and large, what would he have had OL do differently?

"Interstellar relations are part of the Justice League's remit."

"Ah. Feel free to bring that up at the next meeting. I think that everyone knows that the power ring means that I work for someone else."
Admittedly, an organisation he helped create. Though the Greenies probably don't get watched as much as he is.

"The Controllers approved this?"

"The Controllers like order. And they don't like it when pissant primitive would-be empires decide to make everyone's life difficult."
Like triggering a stellar expansion by one local planet to wipe out three others (which would also have empowered chaotic dark gods.)

"Then they are enemies of Thanagar."

"Oh, please declare war on the Controllers. It will make my life much simpler."
Though it'd be a distraction from the Reach front.

[Hawkman's heading this way, fast.]

"I mean, you were basically assigned to Earth in the first place to spy on us."
Even funnier when you remember that the Silver Age versions were cops, and they hung around after their case on Earth was done mostly out of duty and amusement.

"That wasn't this mission!"

"It totally was. I mean, what is this? What did you think you were going to get out of confronting me?"
If she were a more intemperate person, she might have tried beating his head in. It might have made her feel better.

"I like to make it clear how I feel about someone."

"You already made that clear with that ridiculous duel."
No affection gained between them since then, either.

"That wasn't the same thing. That was proving that I wasn't weak. This is a declaration of enmity."

"Did that sound better in your language?"
What does their thanagarian language sound like anyway? Bird-calls as rendered by a humanoid throat? 😏

"If I see you away from Earth-." She bites her tongue.

"What, kill me? You can try. And since I like Katar I probably wouldn't kill you in retaliation. We don't work together, Shayera. I don't get anything from you, and you don't get anything from me. The idea of fighting you is laughable to me-"
Given the difference in power scale between a winged woman with a 'magic' mace and the Illustres of the Orange Lanterns, pretty accurate.

In the corner of my eye I see Hawkman approach, slowing from what I know to be his maximum speed… Probably because he sees that we're not fighting.

"-and did you know that Alstair has no equivalent to downside? If she ever took Thanagar no one would have to grow up in those conditions again."
I wonder, if they had been fighting, would he have tackled Shayera off of OL?

Her right shoulder tenses, and Hawkman's there with his right hand on her left shoulder. She takes another moment before shrugging him off and flying away with a growl.

Hawman watches her go for a few moments. Then he turns back to me.
...Or would he have joined in and flanked him.

"Orange Lantern."

"Hawkman. I suggest keeping her-."

"We were considering requesting asylum."
...Okay, that's unexpected.

"Huh?"

"We are not unaware of the failings of Thanagarian society, Paul. And the things I have discovered about the cults-."

"That your government supports them while it tried to work out how they make Nth metal?"
Desperate needs make for strange bedfellows. And in this case, dangerous ones.

"You knew?"

"It was a bit obvious."
Catching a Cultist helping the Mosteelians did raise a big red flag, yes.

"I.. see. Before your… Intervention, they might have let us go. Now, we would have to sleep with our eyes open."

"Why?" I raise my left fist. "They're got more admirals."
It's not the damage done, OL, it's the perceived insult.

Well, that went well. OL isn't having to heal back a mace-shaped dent in his armour or his head, for a start. Sadly, I don't think Shayera likes him any more than she did before, but that's kind of a foregone conclusion in any timeline where he isn't boosting Thanagar, isn't it? Hopefully that's the end of it for now, anyway...

"The day I used a singularity projector on the bridge of your admiral's ship was the most important day of your life...but for me, it was Tuesday."
it should be Tuesday to you too

you been on Earth for like 4 to 5 years now

this shit is a typical work week :V

"The day I used a singularity projector on the bridge of your admiral's ship was the most important day of your life...but for me, it was Tuesday."
The only rebuttal that might even work is that it was a sunday when he did it, which might make it worse, might be better. I do not know.

What I do know is that correcting that quote on the semantics of what day of the week it was is not a very witty rejoinder.

He. I caught the subtle symbolism. The Thanagarians are not a good empire by any measure. They're just not on the priorities list.

History of her previous rule literally shows you are wrong.
Hyathis took advantage of the lingering effects of the equalizing plague to train the Thanagarians into soldiers, as far as I am aware she did not discriminate the Thanagarians into a caste system.

The much larger concern is her known history of using her telepathic and empathic powers to manipulate people's minds.

Well, ln the plus side we might have a backup candidate for a red lantern if Paul ever needs to go white again?

Did Paul know Hawkwoman grew up downside?
Yes.
"Hawkman"
"They've got"
Thank you, corrected.

I'm not sure where you're getting this from?

It's nice to see him not pussyfooting around her willing blindspots. People sanewashing psychotic, openly malevolent or monstrous people/actions in the name of Both Sides/Golden Mean fallacy is exhausting to me, so the alternative is quite refreshing.

I suspect he's read the report, realized that the cultists his government sponsored tried to kill OL and feed a star+star system's worth of souls to Onimar Syym, and actually recognized that that's why OL reacted the way he did. Like a person with a brain and not a fascistic mindless soldier-robot! Good for him!

"I.. see. Before your… Intervention, they might have let us go. Now, we would have to sleep with our eyes open."

"Why?" I raise my left fist. "They're got more admirals."

…I mean. The obvious (well, more obvious) part of this statement is that he's willing to kill people to make a point, and that he views Thanagar as 'crushable at will.' But the part I'm hoping Katar noticed was OL basically just said they're under his protection, and that he'd cripple their government if it or it's supporters hurt them.

I will say that the idea that Batman has any say on the action of the Illustres of the Orange Lantern Corps while in the execution of his job is laughable.

See Aquaman trying to order OL around back when Manga Khan came to Earth. The fact that he's an independent, rich, post-scarcity, politically significant on a galactic/universal scale person and not just a sidekick who will obey orders… well, he looks young and trained under them, so it probably won't sink in… ever.

People are dumb. Especially when they want the world to operate as they think it should. This relates to her, so Batman should restrain him, right? She should be able to assume he won't bother Thanagar without Te Authorite slamming down on his stupid impulsive kiddy face, right?

Ignoring that, again, her government sponsored cultists that tried to kill him, even if they did so by… trying to hurt her government. Even if Paul's own affairs aren't part of Batman's remit. Even if… and so it goes.

She's not being rational, or reasonable, and she's not going to start. Probably ever. Even once Thanagar inevitably tries to conquer/destroy the universe, because she's already committed; it's good to be part of the Empire! Facts be damned.

People will reason themselves into any corner if it allows them to avoid admitting to having been wrong, and facts won't ever come into it. Why do you think cults can be successful?

"I.. see. Before your… Intervention, they might have let us go. Now, we would have to sleep with our eyes open."

Even ignoring Paul's reaction should Thanagar try anything near Earth, the league is quite capable of beating back moderate sized invasions without either lantern corps.

"The day I used a singularity projector on the bridge of your admiral's ship was the most important day of your life...but for me, it was Tuesday."
Objection! It is very rare that Paul's singularity projector actually hurts the things he fires it at. It was at least a once-a-month thing for him.

Someone else did the tally, the singularity projector has a near flawless record against static emplacements and ships, its only failed against people/magic gods.
