With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

You'd be surprised how far people are willing to go for the sake of becoming superheroes. Or to escape their crappy lives to get a cooler one. Maybe some of those volunteers are people who hate themselves and their lives, and who see Batman's experiments as their one chance to finally do their part and make their mark on the world.
And that wouldn't be the first time we saw this in the fic.

We saw the same thing with Jevek and Effigy.

Martin hated his life so much that he basically agreed to become a lab rat for a creepy alien that doesn't care that much about him and has him fight a powerful alien empire.

So I'm not entirely certain. Did batman re fear-toxin with smilex binding? I can't quite figure it out despite Batman saying it's what the world needs right now.

Edit: I ask because last time he was dosed like thay, all of his speaking wqs always laced with yellow. Unless he learned to control is a little better?
As it turns out, no. While Batman implied that he just redid what the SI did to his brain (set it to an earlier fear-focused state) in reality he didn't need to. Just being put back into that mindset was enough to make it stick, which means that it can't be easily undone.

No, that's the author forgetting. Rewrite incoming...
The new version fixes the prior issue, but I have to admit it's a little bit sadder. I wonder how long Bruce struggled with that decision, and if he talked it over with Talia, Alfred and/or Richard before going for it?

It's been about a year and a half for us, but less than five months in universe. When did he revert? Was it in response to, say, the Gamemnae thing?

No. Changing the hardware doesn't change the software, and if you've been used to thinking in a particular way it's a lot easier to revert to it. Just ask the version of the SI who used the Evil Formula.

"Okay. Ah. Well, this is going to be strange, but… Good. What do you want me doing to help?"

I suppose next update will reveal one way or another, but to me this reads as:

"What do you want me to say to exit this conversation with my memory and mind intact and then I'll decide what I actually want to do about this?"

In some circumstances, that might be the case. With the SI -as Mr. Is It Worth Starting Reading Again pointed out earlier- there aren't many things which directly threaten him. Batman knows that he died twice, is partially etheric and is trained to resist telepathy. Batman knows that browbeating and guilt tripping are the best routes.

I wonder if anyone will realize that Batman did this and point it out to Paul.

Not really, after all, his survival was guaranteed long before he reached the point of mind ducking himself.

I'm not talking about basic survival. I'm talking about when he first merged with the Ophidian to fight off a (fake) alien invasion. When Paul did that, he knew that merging with Ophidian would screw him up both physically and mentally, but he only did it as a last resort because as far as he knew, everyone else was dead and he was basically the last man standing. And after that, when he finally de-merged himself from Ophidian, he had to mind-screw himself in different way and achieve orange enlightenment to contain the Ophidian so that it doesn't break out of his lantern and go on a rampage. So, yes, Paul mind-screwed himself twice over, but as far as he knew at the time, if he hadn't done it, he would have been royally screwed.

It probably wouldn't matter.
This is more of a Militant Alan Scott situation. Batman is doing things OL agrees with in principle but is too squeamish and fearful of doing which is why this became so tricky for him.

Want the ends, want the means indeed. Maybe he should have thought more about not getting his orange quotes back when he got factory-reset...

Invulnerable War (part 12) New

"Baaaah-h-h-h-h-h."

"…hundred sheep, two-" Invincible frowns for a moment. "-piles of government emergency cheese and thirty industrial pumps. You good?"

Armour Invincible nods, looking up from the damage on his chest plate to check the assembled survival materials. "More would be nice, buuuut honestly it's more than I was expecting." He turns towards Angstrom as Invincible flies off to talk to Local Invincible. "Okay, we already cleaned up most of the radioactive material from New Zealand. Can you open the portal to there?"

"No. My power only lets me open the portals relative to the planet. If you want one in New Zealand, we will have to travel there on this Earth."

I knew this was possible, but I haven't actually done it before. And everyone's.. sort of both horrified and enthralled by the glowing orange Angstrom Levy standing next to me. The Invincibles sort of sneak a look and then pretend that they were looking somewhere else.

Armour Invincible look at me. "You mean you could just have taken the sheep to New Zealand instead of here?"

I shrug. "I didn't know where you wanted them. Why don't you pop back and get things prepared, and I'll take them to New Zealand once we're finished here?"

"Mm-hm. Quick question: how do I know that you're actually opening a portal back to my Earth?"

"Ah… Because it would be far more work for me to do all this than it would be for me to pick a fight with you and then portal you somewhere else when you charged me?"

He tilts his head slightly to the right. "I mean… Yeah…"

I call down the drone I acquired and hand it to him. "Can you interface with that? It used standard Viltrumite Empire protocols."

"Just a sec…" The drone blinks, then does a self check. "Got it. I send this through the portal, it sends telemetry back, and that's how I know I'm home. Okay, open the portal."

I nod, and-

Ssshnnng.

-the portal opens, the drone flying through a moment later.

"What did he offer your Invincible?"

"A chance to kill Cecil Steadman."

"Huh. Seems like a lot of work to kill one guy. Is that what he's doing next?"

I look over to where he's talking to Local Invincible, Atom Eve and a short purple viltrumite who was introduced to me as Oliver. Local Invincible's half-thraxan half-brother, which I guess explains why Purple Invincible is purple.

"Maybe. I'm not sure. But it's his decision."

"Hm." He rises off the ground and flies towards the shipping containers with the pumps. They're wreathed in chains to spread the load when he picks them up, and it should all hold. "You can still watch through the drone, right?"

"Yes. Just hold up a sign when you're ready."

There's a.. decidedly unpleasant screeching-clanking sound as he picks the shipping containers up, and then I breath a little easier as he flies through the portal. I generate a giant sack barrow construct and start conveying the rest of his order through.

Purple Invincible drifts over. It's… A little surprising, but he's not paying any attention to the other purple viltrumite at all. I'd have thought that they'd have.. something to talk about. Or is that racist?

"Cecil, huh? Why Cecil?"

"He holds him responsible for his mother's death."

Purple Invincible shakes his head. "He shouldn't make it so personal. It's self-indulgent."

"What did he offer you, then?"

"I wanted to make sure that he stayed away from my Earth. Thraxan-viltrumite hybrids grow up faster than human-viltrumite hybrids. In my reality, Dad went to Thraxa first. He brought all of my brothers and sisters to Earth. It wasn't really much of a fight. Angstrom was a threat to us…" He looks pointedly at the construct. "And now he's not."

"Do you mean to imply that I am?"

He huffs with amusement. "No. You're not crazy like he was, and neither of us has anything the other one wants. I can go home and tell Dad and my brothers and sisters that it's taken care of."

I nod.

Ssshnnng.

He nods, and heads towards the portal with a wave. "Let's hope we never see each other again."

"Likewise."

He flies through, back to his home Earth, the portal shutting down a moment later.

Ssshnnng.

Still got some more equipment to move, and then I've got to transport these sheep to New Zealand… Which wasn't targetted by any of the Invincibles, so at least things should be relatively calm there.

"Hey…" Local Invincible drifts towards me, awkwardly pointing at Angstrom. "Is that..? Permanent?"

"I believe so. I haven't made a point of turning people into constructs on a regular basis, so I can't say for certain, but…" I nod. "I believe so. I certainly don't feel any sort of mechanism for turning it off."

"Would it work on viltrumites?"

"If I could survive in close physical proximity to one for long enough… Probably."

He looks thoughtful. "I know you said that you didn't wanna join your G.D.A…. But if you had… I mean-."

"I could have killed my Invincible. Probably. Or.. helped someone else do it. The x-ionisation process isn't something that I worked out on my own, but attacks based on mental focus seem like they'd work. And with anti-matter? There'd be a crater in the planet the size of Australia, but I think I might have managed to kill Omni-Man as well. Distinctly possible." He nods slowly. "That wouldn't have helped with the next dozen viltrumites, who'd know what happened and could easily ambush me. Or just throw rocks at the Earth. Or… Any one of a number of things." I sigh, shrugging. "Or maybe they don't have that many people to send after an unimportant place like Earth and it would have been fine. Or at least taken them until I got x-ionisation technology and could outfit other people… Or take on a greater number myself. I don't know."

"Huh." He thinks for a moment, and then nods. "Cecil says that all of the other Invincibles are dead, so it's just the two of you…"

"Baaaah-h-h-h-h-h."

"And the sheep still to go. Do you have a reason to stick around?"

"No. Not really. It's been… Nice to see an Earth that hasn't been stamped on, but this isn't my home."

"You… Can stay. Cecil would love the ability to make portals, and… Learn how 'x-ionisation' works."

"I can hardly abandon my wife or child. And I want to finish putting the planet back together. But… Thank you for the off-"

Bwf-fytt!

Angstrom ripples-. Armour!

Purple Invincible shakes his head. "He shouldn't make it so personal. It's self-indulgent

I remember Oliver's mom saying that Thraxans don't hold grudges.

Guess this one has similar beliefs.

Or maybe they don't have that many people to send after an unimportant place like Earth and it would have been fine

They don't have that many people period.

And unfortunately Earth is a bit more important to them.

"No. Not really. It's been… Nice to see an Earth that hasn't been stamped on, but this isn't my home

The other Earth is less a home and more of a gilded cage.

A bullet slams into the side of my head

I'm guessing that's Best Tiger.

So either Cecil decided that it's better to kill you.

Which is fair since while you did help you did also come with the invading force and work with a guy that's enslaved another Earth, and also have a way to travel between universes, so trusting that you wouldn't invade in the future is not exactly a safe bet.

Or this isn't Cecil's doing and others decided to take matters into their own hands.

A bullet slams into the side of my head!
Damn it, Cecil. You just can't help but make the worst decision, can you? And if there was anything else that could really worsen the relationship between you and the local Invincible, you certainly couldn't think if it, otherwise you would have done that.

Given that Invincible Paul regularly fights Viltrumites for training it's hilarious that they think a bullet would work. This would be like taking a potshot at a Z-fighter.
It can work if the person being shot at is distracted. Just ask Goku after Sorbet shot him in the chest.

"Baaaah-h-h-h-h-h."

"…hundred sheep, two-" Invincible frowns for a moment. "-piles of government emergency cheese and thirty industrial pumps. You good?"
Heh. Someone wants lots of lamb and mutton. Surprised they aren't after other livestock as well. Then again, some parts of the world probably made it out safer than others. Lots of countries without nuclear arsenals to get blown sky-high, after all.

Ah, right, fallout. Even with human super-tech or alien tech to fix it (assuming the Viltrumites have that level of science) it still spreads a long way once it hits the upper atmosphere.

It probably is a terrifyingly out-of-context concept for everyone. And Atom Eve may well be worried that she could be capable of doing that too, since she likely hasn't realised her powers and the Lantern's aren't the same thing expressed differently

Armour Invincible look at me. "You mean you could just have taken the sheep to New Zealand instead of here?"

I shrug. "I didn't know where you wanted them. Why don't you pop back and get things prepared, and I'll take them to New Zealand once we're finished here?"
Hardly a difficult thing for him. Giant livestock pen construct, for instance.

"Mm-hm. Quick question: how do I know that you're actually opening a portal back to my Earth?"

"Ah… Because it would be far more work for me to do all this than it would be for me to pick a fight with you and then portal you somewhere else when you charged me?"
...He has a valid point.

He tilts his head slightly to the right. "I mean… Yeah…"

I call down the drone I acquired and hand it to him. "Can you interface with that? It used standard Viltrumite Empire protocols."
Interesting detail. Suggests the Mechanists or whoever made them acquired them from a Viltrumite reality that didn't wipe out their scientists...

"Just a sec…" The drone blinks, then does a self check. "Got it. I send this through the portal, it sends telemetry back, and that's how I know I'm home. Okay, open the portal."

I nod, and-
Interesting. I wonder if this Invincible would found a new scientific caste amongst the Viltrumites?

Ssshnnng.

-the portal opens, the drone flying through a moment later.

"What did he offer your Invincible?"
I suppose there's not a lot to talk about otherwise while they wait.

"A chance to kill Cecil Steadman."

"Huh. Seems like a lot of work to kill one guy. Is that what he's doing next?"
I mean, when you hate someone that much... They're probably fortunate there's no Red Rings in their home reality.

Ironically, they get less purple as they age. I expect the Invincible is much lighter a tone than young Oliver.

"Hm." He rises off the ground and flies towards the shipping containers with the pumps. They're wreathed in chains to spread the load when he picks them up, and it should all hold. "You can still watch through the drone, right?"

"Yes. Just hold up a sign when you're ready."
What, no audio transmission? Surprising, but I suppose it would have been harder to make this plan if Levy could have heard them talking.

There's a.. decidedly unpleasant screeching-clanking sound as he picks the shipping containers up, and then I breath a little easier as he flies through the portal. I generate a giant sack barrow construct and start conveying the rest of his order through.

Purple Invincible drifts over. It's… A little surprising, but he's not paying any attention to the other purple viltrumite at all. I'd have thought that they'd have.. something to talk about. Or is that racist?
Or maybe he's just accustomed to seeing strange-looking people where he's from?

"Cecil, huh? Why Cecil?"

"He holds him responsible for his mother's death."
And ultimately, he was. By letting a known criminal super-genius to make his killer zombots without proper oversight, by the sounds of it.

Purple Invincible shakes his head. "He shouldn't make it so personal. It's self-indulgent."

"What did he offer you, then?"
I suppose that lack of grudge-holding is natural for a species as short-lived as the Thraxans. Wow, less than a year of life? 🤔 Damn, how did they even reach space? Their first launches must have been multi-generational efforts.

"I wanted to make sure that he stayed away from my Earth. Thraxian-viltrumite hybrids grow up faster than human-viltrumite hybrids. In my reality, Dad went to Thraxa first. He brought all of my brothers and sisters to Earth. It wasn't really much of a fight. Angstrom was a threat to us…" He looks pointedly at the construct. "And now he's not."
And by Thraxan standards, half-viltrumites are practically immortal.

"Do you mean to imply that I am?"

He huffs with amusement. "No. You're not crazy like he was, and neither of us has anything the other one wants. I can go home and tell Dad and my brothers and sisters that it's taken care of."
And with this Levy eliminated the way he was, his backers will probably stay hands-off of any universe with an Invincible...

I nod.

Ssshnnng.

He nods, and heads towards the portal with a wave. "Let's hope we never see each other again."
A very realistic possibility, too.

"Likewise."

He flies through, back to his home Earth, the portal shutting down a moment later.
One more safely home. Any left who aren't future zombots in the making??

Ssshnnng.

Still got some more equipment to move, and then I've got to transport these sheep to New Zealand… Which wasn't targetted by any of the Invincibles, so at least things should be relatively calm there.
Ah, clean-up busywork. The unglamorous side of superhero fights, especially at this level.

And he'll probably be on his way by the time Conquest arrives. So there won't be any help there for the locals...

"Would it work on viltrumites?"

"If I could survive in close physical proximity to one for long enough… Probably."

He looks thoughtful. "I know you said that you didn't wanna join your G.D.A…. But if you had… I mean-."
...Ah, I see Mark's already considered the possibilities of Lantern hanging around, eh?

Especially given that a lot of his skills were learned from Jevek's trade. He wouldn't have been able to fight anywhere near this level if he'd been active back when Omniman first turned.

"Huh." He thinks for a moment, and then nods. "Cecil says that all of the other Invincibles are dead, so it's just the two of you…"

"Baaaah-h-h-h-h-h."

"And the sheep still to go. Do you have a reason to stick around?"
It's not like he can't come visit if he needs to.

"No. Not really. It's been… Nice to see an Earth that hasn't been stamped on, but this isn't my home."

"You… Can stay. Cecil would love the ability to make portals, and… Learn how 'x-ionisation' works."
Eh, Cecil would be badly conflicted between the 'so many new weapons to protect Earth' desire and the 'another super-powerful potential conqueror? Must be Tuesday. Get the guns' reflex.

"I can hardly abandon my wife or child. And I want to finish putting the planet back together. But… Thank you for the off-"

Bwf-fytt!
Oh, this better not be Cecil, thinking he has a shot at Lantern.

Angstrom ripples-. Armour!

"-er."

A bullet slams into the side of my head!
On the other hand, conventional bullets aren't much of a threat to a motivated Lantern.

Whoever's behind this is making one hell of a foolish mistake. Lantern and his Invincible were just about to leave as friends, and some idiot tries to assassinate them out of the blue? Even if this isn't Cecil, it's sure as hell going to look like he backed this, given his reputation. And alt!Mark might get his shot at Cecil after all...

Really Cecil now of all times when they're going home and have absolutely no plans to come back?
Superhero comic rules demand that The Man do something stupid and short-sighted at the worst possible time to justify why superheroes should be allowed to exist without government oversight.

Making a lot of assumptions about who is responsible for that gunshot.
Not alot of people would shoot orange lantern.
Cecil is definitely on that list.
Paranoid and unable to work with reasonable people because he does things like this.

Granted his job is mostly unreasonable normally, but yeah.
There's a good reason why most people blame him for stuff.
He's like if government bare-incompetence got married to disproportionate over reaction.

He's not totally incompetent.
He has good takes and succeeds. But when things matter?
He pulls shit like this.
Cutting losses fuck the consequences.

4D chess but with 2D vision.

Guess its how batman might look like if he lost the super competence part of his skill set.

Batman also knows a number of semi-permenamt ways to deal with beings like that.

@Vaermina is 100% the designated troll and rage baiter of this stories comment section. Do not take anything they say literally.
You're free to point out just how what I said to him was in any way inaccurate.

Really Cecil now of all times when they're going home and have absolutely no plans to come back?
Honestly, this feels more like Robot than Cecil. It's like Robot has a chance to deal with the the worse-Flaxan-invasion from the get go.

It has to be now. If Janissary leaves with the ability to make portals, then he is completely beyond their reach, completely beyond their awareness, and able to return without warning, at will, with whatever forces he can scrounge up in the multiverse. The Invincible War was devastating, but it was also incredibly limited compared to what it could have been due to Angstrom's vendetta against Invincible. Janissary doesn't have that blindspot.

And while Janissary may not have any stated intent to return now, Janissary is also a Janissary to an expansionist empire that just got access to multiversal travel. It may not be his choice whether or not he comes back.

Given that Invincible Paul regularly fights Viltrumites for training it's hilarious that they think a bullet would work. This would be like taking a potshot at a Z-fighter.
Paul is also clearly not a Viltrumite.

If they see how his powers work then they may come to the conclusion that he's just an alternate universe counterpart of Atom Eve.

Eve is powerful but she's not more durable than a human.

And while she can resurrect herself, she probably still needs to be at least a bit conscious, or at least have some brain function left for it to work.

Shooting her in the head is probably the most effective way to deal with her, so they probably thought the same would apply to Paul.
