Your Jaune is a mix of competence and stupid that is plausible, engaging, and terribly annoying. So caught up in doing the good thing he inevitably fails when he abandons the right thing to do the moral thing. And I have seen that so many times in the real world, where somebody fails at their goals at the finish line because they stop to do something they think as good that will sabotage all their progress and cause them great pain.
I did actually enjoy your review, as you were on point in capturing a part of Jaune as he is now. He simply isn't ready for the situation that he is put in. But,
It was stated that he is no hero, but a fool. Time and again by the multiverse (author), Armsmaster and even the Outsider. It his thing. If we go by the deck of tarots, the card of the fool best encompasses Jaune and his situation right now. He and by extension Tattletale are at the beginnings of their Journey, where everything ahead will be new, foreign and unknown. They will make mistakes, lots of stupid mistakes but they will eventually learn, adapt and overcome.
as Desu-vult perfectly encapsulated, this is the beginning chapters of this journey, and it is a story told time and again in both the west and the east, whether fantasy novels or anime, that young men and women would venture forth into the unknown; they learn, they persevere, they find their place in the world. And nobody gets it right the first time. Nobody wins it all. That's how adventures go.
Except the Mary Sues. Oddly enough, the stories about people who are simply better than us tend to flop instantly.
And,
Then, this clearly isn't the right thread for you and you should look for something else to read or wait for the author to produce something you'd like to read.
as croaker said, it might just not be your type of story. I do, however, enjoy the sort of take you have, because you understand the why of the characters when you criticize them, recognizing that Jaune and Tattletale are flawed people, and instead of demanding that I make them perfect in the narrative, you just state that you don't like them. It's honest, and not condescending.
Thank you to all three of you for your thoughts.
I randomly came up with a team name for Jaune and Tattletale JT (Jaunt).
I like it, but I think Tattletale would argue for TA, short for team Tattletale.
And Jaune would point out to the girl what else those letters can stand for, to give us an embarrassed, red-faced Tattletale.
In other news, next chapter within a week. Ducking out of my sister's wedding to type this. Someone in the thread got the destination right.
