With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Even if Zeus is an actual threat and living lightning... part of technology are things like transformers and surge protectors and batteries. As a craftsman and blacksmith Hephaestus was a thinker and tinker first. Finally getting that gratification of throwing down with someone Heph always had to take it from is intoxicating, but Heph needs to fight smart.

I mean it would be funny to see the buildup for an Olympian DBZ fight only to have it end super quickly with Zeus unleashing his super move and Heph absorbing and reprocessing the energy and grounding or draining Zeus out.

"Hey Zeus. I found you a new wife. She's got fairly godly powers. And she wants you. Hell, she wants everything and everyone. Also she's an animal, which is your kink, right?"
"What kind of animal are we talking? Centipede? Goat? Giraffe? Can she deepthroat? Giraffes can deepthroat."
"Like you wouldn't believe. She's a snake."
"Hot damn. I'd totally do a snake. But didn't you come here to yell at me for cheating and being mean and stuff? Why aren't you worried about me cheating on her or divorcing her or any of the things I usually do?"
"No, not at all. She's a big girl and can take care of herself in that regard. Do you know what a yandere is?"
"That's Japanese, right? I don't have a clue other than that. Not my domain."
"Great! Anyways, let's just say she'll have a way of keeping you around."
"Right, right! The coils! The sexy sexy coils!"
"Y...es. That's what I meant. The coils."
"When can I meet her?"
"I brought her with me."
"Will you be MINE?"

"Sure babe! For tonight at least!"
Assimilation complete. "Long enough."
"
That goes so much faster when they consent."

I assumed that a god changing its name would be Big. Deal.

Dont think -tian works in Ancient Greek though?? Also since he and Vulcan are different entities would it not be more appropriate to take a look at Greek suffixes and prefixes instead?

-aean might be a better suffix, for example. Since it's actually Greek.
I don't know. I did a quick search and ian is used by some Greek names. I think yours looks better. I'll think about it this evening.

Yeesh, I hate to say it, but Zeus kinda got shit on with regards to one of his most fundamental characteristics. IE Xenia. I mean it's so fundamental to who he is it that he was said to be the embodiment of the concept, with one of his titles even being Zeus Xenios.

He gets so outrageously pissed off when it is violated that in mythology that both the Gods and Men abide by it.

To him, it's one of the few things Zeus holds Sacred.

Xenia consists of two basic rules:
  1. The respect from hosts to guests. Hosts must be hospitable to guests and provide them with a bath, food, drink, gifts, and safe escort to their next destination. It is considered rude to ask guests questions, or even to ask who they are, before they have finished the meal provided to them.
  2. The respect from guests to hosts. Guests must be courteous to their hosts and not be a threat or burden. Guests are expected to provide stories and news from the outside world. Most importantly, guests are expected to reciprocate if their hosts ever call upon them in their homes

OL gave Zeus a gift in the form of sacrifice, was allowed into Olympus which is the home of Zeus as King of the Gods, Zeus gave OL refreshments, and so on and so forth. Zeus even gave Paul permission to be blunt, so you could easily argue that he was not being discourteous by expressing his view of Zeus.

Yet then you have Zeus completely violate it by attempting to smite OL?

It feels like there are enough genuine flaws to be found with Zeus, which is why I'm unsure why it was necessary to flanderize him to the extent that he has been and remove one of his defining traits.

As has been made abundantly clear over the last…60ish years? Marvel/DC depictions of mythological characters are not always the most accurate, for better or worse. Anyone got any handy references to how Zeus is depicted in DC comics?

Because then LePaul would have been in the wrong in that scene due to arriving with hostile intentions and attacking first.

Now here is the million dollar question, does anyone have any artwork that could fit Hephaestian? Personally I'm imagining a mix of the Warframes with Viktor from League

Well, politeness went right out the window. Though Zeus kind of started that little dickwaving contest. Time to see if Phaeste 2.0 is up to the task of removing his father from power. And oh, hey! A prophecy is fulfilled by his doing so! Man, Zeus is really in for a hell of a time tomorrow...
What Prophecy?

Mr Zoat ?
I've been thinking about the Ring Of WAAAAAAAAGH!!! idea since I mentioned it to you...but I am barely a toe in the WH40K lore. What would a WAAAAAAAAGH!!! Enlightenment look like? Act like?

I don't think there would be one. Orks are just too straightforward to have anything to overcome. All Orks exist in harmony with WAAAAAAGH. The closest thing I can imagine is the Ork in question becoming consciously aware of their precise place in the greater whole, rather than just going with it.

Because then LePaul would have been in the wrong in that scene due to arriving with hostile intentions and attacking first.
OL did not attack first. He arrived with hostile intentions sure, but Zeus absolutely attacked first by showing off a form that he knew tended to fry mortal brains. Then there was the lightning blast. In fact, OL still has not attacked.

While I'm still betting on Hephestus 2.0 isn't Zeus connected to every titan in the Underworld meaning he can call on a bunch of varied abilities he usually doesn't use? Can Heph 2.0 win this without help? Is Paul going to summon the Ophidian and break Olympus? Cause while Zeus and Ares deserve it I don't think everyone else who lives there deserves to be homeless.

In the myths it was stated that Zeus would have a son that could overthrow him and that said son would be connected to the goddess Metis.

Metis helped Zeus in freeing his siblings from Cronis, so Zeus married her.

After he found out about the prophecy, he devoured Metis.

Later on he had a headache and Athena was born from said headache.

In this story the prophecy has been fulfilled, albeit jn a fairly convoluted way.

Hephaestus is a son of Zeus and was helped in his current ascension by Athena, so he's connected to Metis.

Can Zeus even actually access the abilities, essence/natures or whatever of the Titans he's connected with? From what I understood: he's using them as batteries, same as Hades is doing with Erebos and Poseidon is or was doing with Oceanus, meaning he has more raw power and more mojo in general; I didn't think he could call on their innate powers.

I thought he just primarly usurped Aether (maybe Ouranos too?) from his initial empowering at the beginning of the Titanomachia or something of the like.

ZEUS: So you've got a power-up? Big deal! Why should I be worried?

HEPHAESTIAN: Have you SEEN what technology is capable of these days? The mortals wield tools and weaponry that even gods should be wary of! Take this wand, for example, created by the brother of the one named "Weather Wizard." As it is, even without being enchanted, it's a genuine marvel of mortal engineering, capable of manipulating the weather as one pleases. But when upgraded by your's truly to work on the conceptual/figurative level as well as the literal one....

OL did make a threat, so Xenia stopped applying. Smiting is on the table.
"Since I got my ring, I've learned to live in accordance with my desire, unhindered by fear. I've not quite gotten to the point where I'd rather die than back down, but if something-" I smile. "-or someone tries to stop me or mine living how they want, I start working out how to stop them being a problem."
I lean towards him.
"And you're being a problem."
WANT.
"You should have been removed as king when you lost Greece to a Jewish architect. Instead, everyone followed your lead and just gave up. You are incompetent. This incident hasn't changed my mind about you; it's just made dealing with it more urgent."

No, LePaul just goaded Zeus into attacking by being as aggressive and hostile as possible in a way almost tailor made to get Zeus to attack.

"Hah! I honestly can't remember last time a mortal spoke-. No, anyone spoke to me with such disrespect. What makes you think I won't erase you from existence, mortal?"

"Why would I think you're more skilled at erasing people than you are at being king?"

"Oh. Okay."

LIGHTNING RETRIBUTION SMITING CHASTISEMENT!

The simple fact is, it would have been easy to actually get Zeus to release Diana from her duty.

Act humble, butter him up further with praise and gifts, then humbly claim Diana's Olympian granted strength is desperately needed on Earth and ask if there is some task you could accomplish for Zeus in exchange for reassigning her there.

Wham, bam, Zeus is now in a position where the only way he can say no is by functionally admitting his people aren't the best. A thing Zeus will almost never do because one of his defining traits is his ego. And even if he would normally still consider saying no and taking the hit to his pride. He has an out that would appear to him to be the best of both worlds.

That's right, one of Zeus's classic favorites, the nearly impossible task.

Which he would almost surely jump on with relish, because one of Diana's friends suffering, and best case to Zeus dying, to free her would be a much better "see what happened because you said no" then being stuck in a very boring job.

But of course LePaul can't die and anything he suffers is easily fixed, so the almost impossible task becomes an easily accomplished one.

To everyone saying that Paul broke hospitality with Zeus, here's my response.

Paul may not care about it.

Think about it; he doesn't need to worry about it very much.

He's allied with the guy that will probably become the next king of Olympus, so Heph can just decree that Paul is not to be touched or harmed for breaking it.

Heck, Heph can just get rid of that law if he wants.

Paul also has other options for gods or afterlives.

One of the reasons he chose to start worshipping the Olympians was that so he could have a decent afterlife for himself should he die.

That's not so much of an issue anymore.

He's connected to the Ophidian, so if he dies he could just go to the Plane of Avarice and exist as some avarice elemental.

He also has a good relationship with the ruler of Hell, so he can just go there if he dies and will most likely be guaranteed a comfortable existence.

Paul doesn't need to worry about breaking any sacred laws here.

What I was getting at was not Paul not caring. He kind of has a history of that. But more of Zeus apparently not giving a shit when hospitality is one of the things he takes most seriously.

And from most of the DC I've read, we're supposed to associate the Greek Pantheon more or less similarly to their canon features. The broader, more fundamental elements are suggested to be the same. The wiki is hit or miss, and there is a wikipedia article on them too which I'm not sure how much to trust, but absent of anything else both of those say the same thing.

..That seems to be right after Zeus threatened OL;

"Do you think that the lightning I threw at you is the limit of my power?"

"Oh, no. I know perfectly well that you aren't weak. I can see your power. Feel it. I know that you're no weaker now than you were three thousand years ago. I just don't care."

"Are you living each moment as if it were your last? Or do you want to die for your princess?"

"Since I got my ring, I've learned to live in accordance with my desire, unhindered by fear. I've not quite gotten to the point where I'd rather die than back down, but if something-" I smile. "-or someone tries to stop me or mine living how they want, I start working out how to stop them being a problem."

Heck, I'd argue that OL's words aren't even a clear threat, given OL's long history of compromising, deals, and bribes, even with people he dislikes.
