With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

I don't think he sucked at being a parent. Every parent is imperfect. They turned out ok and successful and capable adults from what I'd seen. So he can't have been terrible. Plus remember Katara raised them too. She was there and bares as much responsibility as Aang.

This might also tie into why only one child was an air bender if the whole air bender spiritualism producing air benders thing was true.

Yes, Aang was an air bender, but he was also the Avatar, so he had to become proficient in other styles and the philosophies connected to those styles, so he was no longer operating on a purely air bender type of philosophy, so combined that with him possibly not knowing all there is to know about air bender spiritualism, his spouse not being an air bender and there no longer being an air bender community to help, his children didn't all inherit his air bending ability.

"I'm not a bender myself, but my understanding of it is that the gestures involved in bending martial arts produce at least a little elemental output, even if the mind and soul aren't properly focused."

"Yes, a small flare of fire for instance."

"Then could you release a pamphlet, demonstrating the basic forms? Or perhaps send out Acolytes to the towns and villages around the Air Temples, and have them run demonstrations?" I shrug. "Perhaps nothing would come of it, but I don't see how it would hurt."
This is too obvious, instead of making the character come off as smart, it just makes everyone else in the world come off as stupid.

So you should either include a bit with the character telling OL why such an obvious thing hadn't been done before, or change it to something that utilizes an idea or technique that just doesn't exist in the Avatar universe.

Avatar: Legend of Azula (part 6)
170 After Genocide, Late winter, later still than day

I stand on the cliff top, slowly running through the kata which Tenzin showed me earlier today. It reminded me a great deal of tai chi, which surprised me a little because tai chi isn't a martial art. It's an exercise routine for old people. Which works for me in this situation, but it strikes me as a strange mnemonic for manipulating the air. Still, I did get a basic introduction to tai chi once upon a time, so I could afford to be a 'quick study'.

Avatar Korra has apparently returned from whatever was occupying her time today, and Tenzin wants to introduce us. I'm not sure where his particular romantic view of spirits comes from, but I do know the roots of his fixation: his father, Avatar Aang. Avatar Aang had three children, and Tenzin was the only air bender. Which naturally resulted in him having the closest relationship with his father, but almost all of that relationship involving the mystical element of air bending and being the Avatar.

Okay, they're there, so he should have a clear view of me. Switch the form slightly, move my right arm like so while turning my hand, and…

And a plume of purple plasma rises off my hand while my head isn't looking that way.

Tenzin stops, staring up at me.

I come out of the stance, giving myself a quick shakedown before making a show of spotting the two of them in the evening half-light. I raise my right hand in greeting while Tenzin keeps staring at me and Korra starts staring at him.

"Hey, Tenzin?"

He blinks, jerking his head towards her. "Hm, yes?"

I slowly walk down the hill towards them, smiling pleasantly. "Ah, Master Tenzin. I really must thank you for teaching that to me. I feel more limber now than I have for years."

Avatar Korra regards me with mild curiosity, but she's more interested in the strange behaviour of her mentor.

"Are you okay?"

He appears to come out of it. "Yes! Ah, Korra, this is Master Renkun. The next stage of your Avatar training-" She perks up. "-is to learn the ways of the spirits." She perks down slightly, but still holds out a little hope. "Master Renkun specialises in pacifying aggressive spirits, and as such has more direct experience in the subject than anyone I can think of."

I give Avatar Korra a shallow bow. "It will be a privilege to participate in your instruction."

"Ah… Yeah. So… Beat up any evil spirits recently?"

"Korra."

"Yes, several. Have you heard of the Dread Wind of Mount Greyspire?"

A slight increase in her curiosity. "Yeah?"

"Well, you won't anymore."

She smiles in relief. "Okay, this sounds like it beats sitting still with my eyes closed all day. When do we start?"

"Well, I.. don't have an evil spirit to fight right now, but if you think you're in the right frame of mind to absorb a little basic information, I can throw in enough exciting anecdotes to keep you awake. How about that?"

She shrugs. "Yeah, okay. Master… Tenzin?"

He's still staring at me, a little spaced out. "Hm? Oh, ah, yes. Dinner will be in an hour or so. Master Renkun, will you be able to join us?"

"I'm sorry, but I arranged to meet up with my disciple in Republic City for dinner. She's trying out for a sports bending team… The Fire Ferrets?"

Korra looks puzzled, and slightly amused. Tenzin just nods. "Breakfast tomorrow, then? She is welcome to join us as well."

That… Could be a problem. I don't know how much a particular Avatar shares the memories of their predecessors. Aang never met me, but he.. did meet Azula. Certainly, she looks different now, but…

Oh, it won't be a huge problem even if she does recognise her. And I doubt that it's something that they'd check for.

I bow again. "Thank you. We would be delighted. Avatar Korra, perhaps if we go to the.. library? A few illustrations might be helpful."

She nods. "Sure, this way." She gives Tenzin one more concerned look, then turns and heads back down the hill. I nod to Tenzin and follow her… About halfway to the library. Then I glance back up the hill as I see the silhouette of Tenzin head to the top of the hill and match my prior posture.

"Ah, Master Renkun?"

I grin, raising my right forefinger to my lips. "Shhshhshhshhshh! Watch!"

I beckon with my left arm and she walks over to my side, frowning at me. "What's-."

Tenzin repeats my gesture, causing winds to swirl around without creating the flash of purple light which I caused.

"What's he doing?" She cranes her neck, frowning. "I don't remember that one."

Of course, in theory, it should be entirely possible to pull the molecules of the air apart using bending. Given the fact that Republic City looks a little like an American city from the nineteen twenties or thereabouts, I imagine that their material science will be advanced enough to consider trying something like that in about thirty years or so.

"I raised the idea that there might be the descendants of other air benders out in the world somewhere, ignorant of their heritage. Then I practiced air bending forms and caused the air around my hand to turn purple. He's trying to work out-"

"What?!"

"-how it happened, because the obvious option is that I'm an air bender."

"Huh? Are you an air bender?"

I reach into my right sleeve, and pull out a pouch. Opening the pouch I show Avatar Korra the purple powder contained inside. "Pigment powder. Not magic, bending or spirits, but very pretty."

She takes a moment to understand. Then she grins.

"You're pranking Master Tenzin?"

"It is always wise to consider one's own assumptions. Master Tenzin has assumed something about me; he saw me making air bending gestures and the air changed, therefore the change must have been from bending. That is not so."

"Are you allowed to do stuff like that?"

"I first communed with a spirit when I was twenty-nine. Before that, ah… I wasn't the most spiritual man."

"Oooh-kay." She nods slowly. "Well… I'm.. not.. either, so hopefully this won't take as long as learning air bending did."

"I suppose that depends on what you want out of it. Spirits can be beautiful and fascinating… And they can be deadly and terrifying. The most important thing to remember -contrary to what Master Tenzin appears to believe- is that spirits are not inherently good. Nor are they-. Most of them necessary to the proper functioning of the material world. They are simply another group of beings who inhabit this wonderful world of ours, and the problems in communications between humans and spirits arises from their fundamental drives being different from ours."

Master Tenzin puts a little more force into the gesture, and this time creates a strong enough gust of air to knock himself over. He scrambles back onto his feet and straightens up, smoothing his robes and checking to see if anyone saw that.

"Now: to the library."

I can't wait to see what kind of interaction Azula will have with Korra.

This should make Korra slightly more interested in Paul now that she knows he's not as uptight as Tenzin. Hopefully Tenzin won't be too mad when he learns it was just a trick.

Considering Paul's beliefs, I'd be interested to see what he'd say to Vaatu. Also, I hope Tenzin and Korra will get to see Paul turn into a glowing orange snake or something, just so that we can see them freak out at Paul's transformation and realization that he's basically a spirit himself.

...Not sure if that's a typo or a pun... 'Pneumonic', mnemonic, who's gonna quibble? At any rate, I rather suspect having a database of martial arts styles would have been handy right now. Match the subtle differences in form, adjust for spiritual power, and bam... Bending 101. :p

Avatar Korra has apparently returned from whatever was occupying her time today, and Tenzin wants to introduce us. I'm not sure where his particular romantic view of spirits comes from, but I do know the roots of his fixation: his father, Avatar Aang. I take it this is happening in the period before Season Two's opening episode, in that six-month gap. Which means things might be a little surprising for Unalaq during the Glacier Spirit Festival...

Okay, they're there, so he should have a clear view of me. Switch the form slightly, move my right arm like so while turning my hand, and…

And a plume of purple plasma rises off my hand while my head isn't looking that way.
Heh. Just like I thought. Faking it using Ring database plus some energy discharges. For what reason, I wonder?

Tenzin stops, staring up at me.

I come out of the stance, giving myself a quick shakedown before making a show of spotting the two of them in the evening half-light. I raise my right hand in greeting while Tenzin keeps staring me me and Korra starts staring at him.
She's probably wondering who the old (and presumably odd-looking, unless he's tweaked his features to seem more asiatic) guy is, and why Tenzin looks like someone just slapped him in the face.

"Hey, Tenzin?"

He blinks, jerking his head towards her. "Hm, yes?"
Heh. He does seem a little distracted.

Wonder if she's curious as to what that purple stuff was, and whether it was Airbending.

"Are you okay?"

He appears to come out of it. "Yes! Ah, Korra, this is Master Renkun. The next stage of your Avatar training-" She perks up. "-is to learn the ways of the spirits." She perks down slightly, but still holds out a little hope. No doubt anticipating more boring stuff like book learning or <shudder> Meditation.

I give Avatar Korra a shallow bow. "It will be a privilege to participate in your instruction."

"Ah… Yeah. So… Beat up any evil spirits recently?"
Fistfighting them is so passe. Though there are a few who could use a good punch in their stolen face.

"Korra."

"Yes, several. Have you heard of the Dread Wind of Mount Greyspire?"
Ah, I see. Doing a bit of spirit-calming to help establish some bona-fides. And helping people for the sake of helping, of course.

A slight increase in her curiosity. "Yeah?"

"Well, you won't anymore."
Heh. That makes it sound so final. I'm sure you just convinced whatever it was to go blow somewhere else that wasn't around humans?

She smiles in relief. "Okay, this sounds like it beats sitting still with my eyes closed all day. When do we start?"

"Well, I.. don't have an evil spirit to fight right now, but if you think you're in the right frame of mind to absorb a little basic information, I can throw in enough exciting anecdotes to keep you awake. How about that?"
And it might well be less esoteric in nature than Unalaq's method. Something a straight-forwards young lady like her can appreciate. She's... Not really one for the spiritual.

She shrugs. "Yeah, okay. Master… Tenzin?"

He's still staring at me, a little space out. "Hm? Oh, ah, yes. Dinner will be in an hour or so. Master Renkun, will you be able to join us?"
Man, that little display has him shaken, doesn't it?

"I'm sorry, but I arranged to meet up with my disciple in Republic City for dinner. She's trying out for a sports bending team… The Fire Ferrets?"

Korra looks puzzled, and slightly amused. Tenzin just nods. "Breakfast tomorrow, then? She is welcome to join us as well."
Well, Bolin's determined, if nothing else. After all, his fame as Nuktuk of the South is still a ways off yet.

That… Could be a problem. I don't know how much a particular Avatar shares the memories of their predecessors. Aang never met me, but he.. did meet Azula. Certainly, she looks different now, but…

Oh, it won't be a huge problem even if she does recognise her. And I doubt that it's something that they'd check for.
...Korra's going to recognise Azula instantly, isn't she, yet not realise how until she takes the time to commune with Aang...

Then I glance back up the hill as I see the silhouette of Tenzin head to the top of the hill and match my prior posture.
...A clever distraction. If that's what his little stunt was.

"Ah, Master Renkun?"

I grin, raising my right forefinger to my lips. "Shhshhshhshhshh! Watch!"
Ooh, the 'smiling old man' comes forth. Do not act incautiously, Korra. :p

I beckon with my left arm and she walks over to my side, frowning at me. "What's-."

Tenzin repeats my gesture, causing winds to swirl around without creating the flash of purple light which I caused.
And just that alone should clue him in that something was off. But no, his hope is blinding him to the alternatives.

If that soon. Other than the spontaneously advanced technology like mech suits, there really aren't many examples of scientific advances in other fields. Then again, this was an adventure series for kids, who probably wouldn't care about Science!

"I raised the idea that there might be the descendants of other air benders out in the world somewhere, ignorant of their heritage. Then I practiced air bending forms and caused the air around my hand to turn purple. He's trying to work out-"

"What?!"
You can excuse Korra's gullibility, she's a teenager and not overly worldly.

"-how it happened, because the obvious option is that I'm an air bender."

"Huh? Are you an air bender?"
No, his 'bending spirit' slot is taken up by a big, orange snake.

I reach into my right sleeve, and pull out a pouch. Opening the pouch I show Avatar Korra the purple powder contained inside. "Pigment powder. Not magic, bending or spirits, but very pretty."

She takes a moment to understand. Then she grins.
She may not be worldly, but she does understand fun.

"You're pranking Master Tenzin?"

"It it always wise to consider one's own assumptions. Master Tenzin has assumed something about me; he saw me making air bending gestures and the air changed, therefore the change must have been from bending. That is not so."
The alternative was something spiritual, but the Airbending is the simplest possibility. I'm sure Tenzin will be fretting about it all night.

"Are you allowed to do stuff like that?"

"I first communed with a spirit when I was twenty-nine. Before that, ah… I wasn't the most spiritual man."
...About the age he began on the Team. The math checks out. :p

"Oooh-kay." She nods slowly. "Well… I'm.. not.. either, so hopefully this won't take as long as learning air bending did."

"I suppose that depends on what you want out of it. Spirits can be beautiful and fascinating… And they can be deadly and terrifying. There are plenty of spirits that are harmful to humans. The Face Stealer, for instance. The hard part is recognising that before interacting with them.

Master Tenzin puts a little more force into the gesture, and this time creates a strong enough gust of air to knock himself over. He scrambles back onto his feet and straightens up, smoothing his robes and checking to see if anyone saw that.

"Now: to the library."
Heh. He's gonna be at that all night, isn't he?

Honestly, Tenzin could stand to loosen up a little. Man is wound crazy tight. And hopefully OL can teach Korra a few things about Spirits that she wouldn't otherwise discover until it was too late. As long as he can keep her on task and avoid letting her get bored. But he's got experience working with teenagers, so he shouldn't have too much trouble on that front.

...but it strikes me as a strange pneumonic for manipulating the air.
Should be 'mnemonic', unless he's having a laugh to himself. :p
...while Tenzin keeps staring me me...
...while Tenzin keeps staring at me...
He's still staring at me, a little space out.
He's still staring at me, a little spaced out.

Just...for the record, Tai Chi Chuan (or Taijiquan (there are accent marks in there I'm not replicating,)) is an actual factual martial art. Certain forms are ALSO used as therapy to retain or rebuild flexibility and muscle tone, and/or a form of moving meditation. But it's root still lies in the ability to do unto others before they can do unto you.

Go to an MMA tournament with tai chi and see what happens.

A martial art doesn't need to be good for an MMA match to be considered a martial art.

In swimming, the front crawl is faster than the breaststroke. That doesn't make the breaststroke not count as a stroke.
Front crawl is faster that breaststroke, but breaststroke will get you there without drowning.

Note: Written BEFORE reading Part 4 of this arc (the one day I take off has to be the day that we get something like this, huh? :D )

Regarding the screw-ups of previous Avatars: Word of God/Bryke is that the first challenge for any new Avatar is fixing the mess left behind by their predecessor's biggest mistake. Thus, for example, Aang's first challenge as Avatar was fixing the massive mess left by Roku trusting Sozin, both in terms of the immediate effects (the war itself) and the longer-term effects (the whole "reconciliation" phase of the peace that follows). Likewise, Korra's first challenge was fixing the problems caused by Aang's biggest fuckup, which was his terribly hamhanded and badly-handled efforts at running the peace postwar (which resulted in, essentially, all of the tribulations she faced during LoK).

Ingratiating himself with the surviving Air Benders, I see. I wonder why specifically. Interest in the family of Azula's former foes? Genre-savvy awareness that they'll end up playing a big role in the events of years to come? Wonder what Korra will make of it when she gets back from the Poles. If it's that early in Season Two, anyway. And Azula's hanging around too...
Chojin, if this fic was in the NSFW section, I'd guess it was a case of OL realizing how long a dry spell it's been and hoping that the timing is right to be able to have a bit of a casual fling with Korra after she breaks up with Mako but before she hooks up with Asami (because literally everybody seems to be down bad for Korra!)... but something tells me that isn't the case here.

I think it's a bit harsh to call either of them 'fuck ups'. Roku fought Sozin as a young man, and was a very old man by the time Sozin killed him. You'd have to argue that he should have killed Sozin without giving him the option of surrendering, and that seems a little harsh.

Similarly, Republic City works. Democracy doesn't exist in Avatar, and the council arrangement was an alternative to restarting the Great War. The rise of bending criminal gangs was something he fought against, both personally and by supporting the police force.

And I firmly blame Kuvira on Reiko. He should have approved her taking over the Earth Kingdom and not tried foisting an obvious incompetent puppet ruler on her.

At this point he's way older than Korra. Even if he didn't look it, even if he could, it would still be morally wrong. And Korra is much less mature than most of his original team mates as a result of the White Lotus closeting her.

Kya, on the other hand...

Thank you, corrected.

She was his patient. It would be immoral. If they were even remotely compatible.

With his tattoos I'm not sure that they could.

He means Kya being a lesbian as implied in the cartoon and confirmed by word of god.

That is why she has no children nor a husband.

I mean, that's kind of like saying that a sword isn't a weapon because if you take a kitchen knife to a gun fight you'll get curb stomped. Tai Chi, historically, was a functional martial art, but modern forms are centered more on the health aspect and have thus adapted away much of the combat relevant portions, whereas the MMA community has been ripping apart various martial arts styles for the past several decades to develop the most effective methods of inflicting violence possible.

Sure, modern tai chi is barely a martial art and even the older forms probably wouldn't stand up to more modern mma styles, but that doesn't mean that the root wasn't a valid martial art which would fit in with the basis of other bending styles.

She can go in the Dumbledore box. If they want characters to be gay, they can have the courage to put it in the main body of work.

Honestly, that's worse for her. That means that she lied to both of her brothers about why she never settled down when they were completely honest and open about their problems to her.

A bit of a risk in violating the Rule 8, but I have to point out that they probably didn't do that for fear of a backslash from viewers which could have impacted how the studio executives had the show proceed.

A lot of fictional works did that.

Nowadays various animated series may show queer characters openly and have them be a part of the main cast, like the Owl House, Vox Machina, Fiona and Cake etc., but even a few years ago that would have been rare and difficult to find or consider.
