With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

I'm not the only one that thought this last part was kinda sexual

That's never happened to me before."
Welp. You were right.
"he is"
Do you have enough straps?"
Kinky.
I suppose… "Would impaling myself work better
Just make sure he preps you.
"then"
"attaches"
"Yes, I heard about Prince Orm's efforts in taking control of Oceanus. Such a waste
Wonder what he considers to be waste.

That he failed or that he used so much power to rely on a god?
Honestly, the fear is a larger factor."

He begins attached the probes to the rest of me. "Why?"
Because you nearly drowned them.
relationship that fix one
"than fix"
. "I'm afraid that that.. sort of thinking has rather fallen out of fashion
Unfortunately it's still in fashion in a lot of places.
Hey!" I pointedly reach down and move his hand aside while he stares at me in confusion. "I'm affianced, you know."

"Someone tattooed it."

"Back when I was single."

He sighs.

"Very well. Your thigh, then."
And we're back to playing doctor.

"Of course. Everyone's a threat to everyone. As far as I know, no one has developed nuclear depth charges, and if they had they'd be hard to effectively deploy.
That's Cold War technology actually, used as an anti-submarine weapon. In Real Life they were withdrawn from service by the nations that possessed them(including the UK) around 1990 partly because of nuclear disarmament and reduced tensions from the Cold War ending, partly because they were being replaced with longer ranged and more accurate conventional torpedoes that did the same job but better and without the scary "nuclear" tag.

Not sure if the existence of Atlantis would cause said nations to not keep the arsenal around or even upgrade it just in case they had to fight Atlantis or keep the switch to more conventional alternatives.

The probe falls from my left bicep and clatters to the ground, Ahri'ahn staring at it in confusion.

"That's never happened to me before."
Well, some men do have that problem, especially after a certain age. Don't worry, I'm sure the ladies won't take it personally. I see why OL's not too worried about the scanning process now, though.

Because he attached it using magic, which my tattoos promptly absorbed because powerful as he us a basic adhesive spell is still a basic adhesive spell.

"I did say."
Heh. I hope Ahri'ahn's got some less intrusive way to measure, because if they're doing that for a simple adhesion spell...

"I had understood that when you said 'environmental' that you meant 'background', rather than including spells placed upon you."

"It's a multi-function defensive measure. I can actually supercharge the absorption feature using my ring. Do you have enough straps?"
Ahri'ahn's mistake for thinking he knew better about something new than the person who's been using them for years now.

"Yes, it's just that I'd rather not use them. I can perfectly account for the effect of my own spells on my readings, but even thaumically deadened straps introduce a subtle disruptive variance… I suppose that it's unavoidable."

I suppose… "Would impaling myself work better?"
Because even a simple strap made by hand with no enchantments would still carry some background thaumic signatures, eh?

"No, that would be even more disruptive, other wise I would.. have suggested it myself." He gestures, and a piece of magically crafted leather precipitates out of the air and wraps itself around my arm. The levitation aspect of his spell dies a moment later, but by them it's already firmly attached. "Three, I think, for an optimal image."
I suppose he'll just have to account for the distortions.

"Carry on, then."

He attached two more probes to the strap, equidistant around the circumference. He then wiggles his right forefinger at it, half-closing his eyes as he tests the connection.
Okay, not invasive enough to set of OL's wardings. On the other hand, the imaging he gets probably won't be so precise...

"Good. Now. How long should we leave it before moving on to the serious part of the discussion?"

I smile politely as he moves on to my forearm. "I'm not sure what you mean by that."
At least Ahri'ahn's savvy enough to get that this is more than a casual examination.

"Clearly, King Orin's allies are concerned about him, and about me and what I've done. Directly confronting me would be ill-advised, so they send a junior subordinate to check things out." He shrugs. "It's a reasonable strategy and I'm certainly not offended by their concern for King Orin's welfare, but this will probably be easier if we discuss things directly."
Politically savvy indeed. And wise enough to want to skip the bullshit too? Man, you're making it hard not to like him.

"They didn't send me-"

He smiles. "Of course."
Plausible deniability, of course. OL can't just say that's why he's here.

"-but I have certain concerns and I suspect that they share them."

Three more probes, and he moves around to my other side. "I am braced. Wherein lie their concerns?"
Do you want the short list or the long one?

"The first is simple. When you raised Atlantis, it caused huge waves to speed towards the coasts all along the Atlantic rim. As it happened the League were on top of things and we blocked it, but that could have gone very differently. Last time it happened, it did go differently."
Though they still won, it was a lot messier.

"Yes, I heard about Prince Orm's efforts in taking control of Oceanus. Such a waste."

"So while there were few injuries -just a few boats in the wrong place- and no one died, a lot of people were very scared."

"Mm." He ducks slightly to wrap a harness around my chest. "And how would they have me amend my conduct?"
Hmm... Angry because of the waste of magical potential, or because he thought Orm had potential?

"If you had notified the League in advance, we could have warned the effected countries and put the shields in place from the start. Or perhaps even have prevented the wave forming. Naturally, we would also assist you in whatever way we could with the actual rising portion."
Of course, that would require him to actually care about other nation's opinion, which I suspect he only worries about as far as they may be dangerous to Atlantis.

"Few people were hurt, you say? Raise your arms a little."

I do so. "Yes. As things stand, with those places worst affected by surges like that still sparsely inhabited since last time, it was very unlikely that the same level of death and destruction could occur. Honestly, the fear is a larger factor."

He begins attached the probes to the rest of me. "Why?"
Ah, he really needs to get up to date on modern international politics...

"I imagine that international relations in your youth might be likened to a huge room sparsely populated by emaciated dwarves. Now it is a small room inhabited by heavily armed ogres. No one can move without bumping into someone else, and sudden and unexpected actions can result in undesirable escalation. While you may well argue that you can act as you wish in Atlantean territory… We're all so close together than one country's problems have a way of rapidly becoming everyone's problem."
An apt analogy. Just leaving out the fact that some of those ogres also have short tempers. Though that probably falls under 'undesirable escalation'.

He nods, eyes focused on the probes. "Are they a threat to Atlantis?"

"Of course. Everyone's a threat to everyone. As far as I know, no one has developed nuclear depth charges, and if they had they'd be hard to effectively deploy. And no one's come right out to say that they'll start unless you say sorry. But it increases international tension at a time when that's really unhelpful. Similarly, undoing the efforts which King Orin made to increase familiarity between nations is also unhelpful. Nations which trade with one another dislike going to war as that disrupts that trade. It's… It's easier to maintain a relationship that fix one that's broken."
Which makes Ahri'ahn coming like a crotchety grandpa grumbling about 'this isn't how it was done in my day.' all the worse.

"I shall bear that in mind. What other concerns do they have?"

"The ethnic cleansing doesn't look good."

"I'd call it 'sorting' rather than 'cleansing'. They are Atlanteans, after all."
Still, other people would call it 'segregation' and that's only slightly less worse than killing them outright.

"Just… Of a lesser type?"

"Yes." He steps back and examines his work, then nods to himself.
The problem is that he doesn't see that attitude as a problem.

I make a point of wincing when his eyes briefly move up to my face. "I'm afraid that that.. sort of thinking has rather fallen out of fashion. The major powers of the world are -at least theoretically- egalitarian. Dividing a nation along tribal hierarchies is generally regarded as something only primitive and unsophisticated nations do. It's as if you're treating the other cities as tributary nations rather than as part of the same nation."
Of course, there are always other things to divide people, that's just the way we are. It's overcoming that impulse that helps us aspire to be better.

"I am. That is the Atlantean way."

"It was the Atlantean way a very long time ago. Atlantis has become more collegial over the last few generations precisely to avoid the disquiet it causes. And yes, it was the Atlantean way for a long time and to you it doesn't have the associations the idea has with the surface world-."
Associations that have most of us readers against him, certainly.

"I am aware of the Nazis."

"It wasn't just them. Killing people whose faces don't fit used to be all too common, and people get very nervous when anyone does anything that even reminds them of that."
Another sad fact of human history, and one that does get people pissed off at you these days.

"They will calm themselves eventually."

"And… Well, I understand that you are the source of the spells used to add piscine components to Atlanteans."
Most of them, as the Sharks probably proudly proclaimed back in the day.

"Yes, most of them."

"Then if you're raising the continent, would it not make sense to undo the bloodline magics and turn them back into normal humans? Purebloods would still have a physical advantage, but it would return any who wanted it to the surface."
Though there would be the issue of accommodating all those now unable to breathe water. Unless they then cast the perfected versions on everyone.

"That isn't simple, even for me. Not for so many. Once things have stabilised I suppose that I could look into it."

"I believe that there was a problem with some of the lesser spells failing on their own?"
So, would they require refreshes every few years or decades, or..?

"Far more simple; I have already provided the masters with the original design and my own notes." He looks down, strap and probe at hand. "It should be relatively easy for them to prevent-."

"Hey!" I pointedly reach down and move his hand aside while he stares at me in confusion. "I'm affianced, you know."
Only one person gets to fool around down there, and she is halfway across the galaxy.

"Someone tattooed it."

"Back when I was single."
...Ow. 😨 Seriously, ow. Good thing you were high as hell on magic at that point. Weren't you, OL?

He sighs.

"Very well. Your thigh, then."
Besides, would you really want to be fooling around with OL's undercarriage?

Well, Mr Zoat said it would get more sexual, and it kind of did. I suspect if this was animated, the camera would stay above OL's waist at all times. And now we see why OL didn't seem worried that Ahri'ahn would slip something past his defenses: Those defences are soul-deep, and highly sensitive. Still, probably worked getting looked over later anyway.

Huh... I can't believe it never came up that he has his dick tattoed, I didn't read the NSFW omakes so not sure if it showed up there. Jade never commented on it?

Besides the funny thing, can't fail to notice that Racist Arch-Wizard isn't really addressing the concerns being presented to him, he's just waiving them away or giving the general impression of "if other people are bothered, that same people need to get over it".

Also, I suppose the Illustres' "plausible deniability" endeavor wasn't as subtle as he thought it was (not that it was all that subtle to begin with), so I'm still baffled why he's so calm getting probed by the possible (most likely) enemy here.

"No, that would be even more disruptive, other wise I would.. have suggested it myself." He gestures, and a piece of magically crafted leather precipitates out of the air and wraps itself around my arm. The levitation aspect of his spell dies a moment later, but by then it's already firmly attached. "Three, I think, for an optimal image."
Just noticed this error. There should be no space there.

Huh... I can't believe it never came up that he has his dick tattoed, I didn't read the NSFW omakes so not sure if it showed up there. Jade never commented on it?
It was mentioned way back during the bit where they were deporting J'aarkin back to Mars I think.

Wonder what he considers to be waste.

That he failed or that he used so much power to rely on a god?
Probably that someone who was so amendable to his goals is no longer in a position of authority within Atlantean society. Orem was a Prince; second or third in line to the throne. I mean if Orm had kept his cover intact until Ahri'ahn had shown up, things could have gone very differently under the shield; potentially to where Arthur and his son die through innocent means.

That should say 'And'.

Wasn't expecting to learn that today, but it's funny nonetheless.
Over time, the archmage grows increasingly frustrated, convinced that the reason he can't quite comprehend how this whole thing works is the lack of readings on that one spot.

Ye-ah, since he did that I can't help but notice that I'm wearing a bunch of leather straps while a man in period dress gently pokes me. I don't think there's any chance of someone accidentally walking into his laboratory and getting the wrong idea, but the experience is a little awkward.

I wonder if Jade-?

"Alright, I think I understand. The process by which the network was created was somewhat crude, but it's about what I would expect from uneducated hedge magicians."

"We can't all be heirs to Kor. Given what they were working from, I don't think they did too badly."

He steps back, gesturing to me-. To the probes with his left hand while his right gestures to an illusion pedestal. Sort of an Atlantean computer monitor cum hologram projector. The result… Ah, it is managing to monitor the flows of magic energy through my body. That's pretty interesting, though Ahri'ahn has naturally gone for the high-information low-intelligibility display.

"But where is it going?"

"Do you want me to tell you, or do you want to work it out?"

He gives me a sidelong glance and a small smile. "Of course I want to work it out. Do you understand how seldom I confront an interesting problem in magic that I can't solve instantly?"

"I'm sorry that we didn't manage more during your absence."

"I wouldn't call mechanical and electronic technology nothing. But it is a little disappointing that nothing really radical has improved since I left."

"Nothing?"

"There has been refinement and expansion, but it's of a sort that I predicted would come eventually. I caught up swiftly. The only researcher who truly impressed me is Professor Sephtian. I believe that you know him?"

"We worked together, yes. Do you mind me asking where he ended up?"

"Of course not. I promoted him for his brilliant work. He should be in Tritonis overseeing their infrastructure upgrade, but with the Dolmen Gate network that's hardly any distance at all. Do you wish to speak to him?"

"Yes, actually. It's not urgent, but there are a number of projects he was-."

"I meant in the interpersonal context, not the professional. I'm afraid that he's going to be fully occupied for at least the next year."

"Ah. Well, I would still like to speak to him. And… Do I talk to you about getting more ammunition created, or is that out of the question for the foreseeable future?"

"That would be your 'mage slayer' rounds, yes?"

"Yes. I.. realise that-."

"That the existence of such devices presents a strategic vulnerability to Atlantis that I would much rather did not exist?"

"You're not the only people who use magic. And to the best of my recollection I haven't ever used them contrary to Atlantean interests."

"If it were simply a matter of handing them out for a particular mission I would have no issue with it, so long as any unused rounds were returned to us."

"That's hardly practical. I don't even always know whether or not the thing I'll be fighting is magic or something else ahead of time."

"I'm not suggesting it for your ease. I'm informing you that it is the only way in which you will get more."

"Have you considered the other drawback of that approach?"

He sets the illusion scan output to rotate slowly. "What would that be?"

"When you withdrew Atlantean support for N.E.M.O. we were obliged to find an alternate source of magicians. We found it. Now, it's certainly more convenient for me to acquire reloads in Atlantis; there are already people here who know how to make them, and I spend most of my time on Earth. But I can tutor magicians from any sufficiently sophisticated magical culture in how to make them. It would take time that I don't want to spend and I'd have to accept a reduction in performance, but it would be a workable solution. The other drawback is that if I ran out then I would have to use the Ophidian more."

"The orange… Elemental."

"Yes. She's good at feeding on things, making them a part of her. I don't draw on her much for much the same reason that you don't beg magic from elementals, but-."

"Why would that bother me?"

"Do you really want me calling up an elemental that powerful, and getting her used to the taste of magic? I honestly don't know what the wider effects could be. I -a lowly Lantern- already have the ability to manipulate the desires of the people around me. She is far more powerful. Perhaps she can do it already… Perhaps she simply hasn't been motivated to."

"How do you contain her?"

"Strictly speaking, we don't. She likes us. We allow her to feel desires in ways she can't. And as long as she's getting what she wants, she's happy to stay in the Orange Central Power Battery and give us all a little boost."

"A desire elemental bound by her own desires. Fitting. You don't have a soul."

"I didn't have a soul. Might I ask you to explain your reasoning?"

"This system is designed to bind power to your 'self'. I had thought that perhaps you were funnelling power into your soul in order to fuel yourself in some way, but you seemed ignorant of the side effects that should follow such an action. And given the permanent nature of these marks… And your generally sound judgement-."

"Quite a few people would laugh at that statement."

"It makes me think that you had something else in mind." He shakes his head. "You made sure that your newly formed soul would be invisible to magic, that it would be indelibly linked to you. How did you know to do this?"

"I didn't, but I knew a man who could cut runes into souls and since a soul is basically a cheap form of immortality I knew that I wanted one."

"I genuinely didn't know that soulless life was possible. I.. can't actually create a theory for how it might have been done."

"Do you want me to tell-?"

His head jerks around. "Don't you dare."

He looks away, taking a moment to steady himself.

"Was there anything else?"

"Well, you appearing from the pages of ancient history and King Orin disappearing looks pretty suspicious. This isn't a matter of another nation interfering in Atlantis's internal affairs; they're friends of his. If he could turn up for half an hour just to set their minds at ease that would be a big help. And because we've had a lot of trouble with mind control lately, I think they'd like it if I could speak to a few people without supervision, so that I could relay back to them that there's nothing amiss."

"I suppose that's not unreasonable. Very well: you can have the run of the city for the rest of the day while I think about your ammunition."

"And try and work out how Hollow Men became real?"

"As much as I intend to try to avoid it." He looks at me closely. "You really are quite interesting."

Is interested?

Would be pissed?

Ha!

You really don't know Paul all that well, Ahri.

Quite a few people would laugh at that statement

And with a lot of good reason.

basically a cheep form

"cheap"

"And try and work out how Hollow Men became real?"

"As much as I intend to try to avoid it." He looks at me closely. "You really are quite interesting

I have a feeling that we'll be seeing soulless zombies soon.

Hm. I think this antagonist is one who Paul will try really hard to diplomance. This is a guy who has potential to be really helpful with Paul's long term goals and seems largely not so batshit insane. Sure there are some short term foibles, but the Paul has straight up shared the knowledge that he is the gatekeeper to an objectively superior form of immortality.
Also given this guy was a straight up antagonist in Renegade's timeline, he's probably gonna end up an ally.

I wonder if Jade-?
Oh, I'm sure Jade would appreciate the aesthetic. Perhaps moreso if she were the one in charge of the situation, with him bound up in front of her. Assuming she doesn't indulge in that sort of thing with OL as it is.

"Alright, I think I understand. The process by which the network was created was somewhat crude, but it's about what I would expect from uneducated hedge magicians."

"We can't all be heirs to Kor. Given what they were working from, I don't think they did too badly."
And often, those with less to work with are far craftier about how they use what they do have. Consider John Constantine's methods before his empowering, and those after.

After all, the subject doesn't need to know what's going on, does he? That arrogance...

"But where is it going?"

"Do you want me to tell you, or do you want to work it out?"
I have no idea which he'd prefer. Probably the latter, since he seems so sure of his skills and knowledge.

He gives me a sidelong glance and a small smile. "Of course I want to work it out. Do you understand how seldom I confront an interesting problem in magic that I can't solve instantly?"

"I'm sorry that we didn't manage more during your absence."
To be fair, Earth did suffer at least one cultural collapse (in the Bronze Age) that likely set the progress of magic back considerably, and then various religious crackdowns verging on purges of magic-users... Those that remained learned to be far more discreet.

"I wouldn't call mechanical and electronic technology nothing. But it is a little disappointing that nothing really radical has improved since I left."

"Nothing?"
I guess he's not counting schizotech amongst those improvements, since many such devices are near-magical in their effects.

"There has been refinement and expansion, but it's of a sort that I predicted would come eventually. I caught up swiftly. The only researcher who truly impressed me is Professor Sephtian. I believe that you know him?"

"We worked together, yes. Do you mind me asking where he ended up?"
Ah, good. I expect this is the only chance he's really had to press the matter with someone who might know.

A surprisingly liberated decision. I half-expected him to have dismissed Sephtian as 'a talented dabbler' or something because of his piscine features. I guess our manta boy impressed him with his work.

"I meant in the interpersonal context, not the professional. I'm afraid that he's going to be fully occupied for at least the next year."

"Ah. Well, I would still like to speak to him. And… Do I talk to you about getting more ammunition created, or is that out of the question for the foreseeable future?"
Huh, that is a reasonable concern. While he hasn't been spamming them, his stocks would have to be dwindling a little, since he can't do all the crafting work himself...

"That would be your 'mage slayer' rounds, yes?"

"Yes. I.. realise that-."

"That the existence of such devices presents a strategic vulnerability to Atlantis that I would much rather did not exist?"
Think of it as a small concession to the world's concerns. They aren't exactly in common use (I expect Alan and all the Greens have a modest stock for special use.) especially amongst the surface world militaries.

"You're not the only people who use magic. And to the best of my recollection I haven't ever used them contrary to Atlantean interests."

"If it were simply a matter of handing them out for a particular mission I would have no issue with it, so long as any unused rounds were returned to us."
OL doesn't always have the luxury of swinging by, getting authorisation from some Atlantean quartermaster and then rushing back to whatever fight he needs them for, you know... Even with a greediport, that takes time.

"That's hardly practical. I don't even always know whether or not the thing I'll be fighting is magic or something else ahead of time."

"I'm not suggesting it for your ease. I'm informing you that it is the only way in which you will get more."
All right, then, he'll have to take other routes to deal with magic.

"Have you considered the other drawback of that approach?"

He sets the illusion scan output to rotate slowly. "What would that be?"
Ah, this should be entertaining.

"When you withdrew Atlantean support for N.E.M.O. we were obliged to find an alternate source of magicians. We found it. Now, it's certainly more convenient for me to acquire reloads in Atlantis; there are already people here who know how to make them, and I spend most of my time on Earth. The other drawback is that if I ran out then I would have to use the Ophidian more."
I expect the quality of the 'bootleg' versions may be a little reduced at first, until the folks he's contracting get used to it.

"The orange… Elemental."

"Yes. She's good at feeding on things, making them a part of her. I don't draw on her much for much the same reason that you don't beg magic from elementals, but-."
Well, when you're connected to it by the soul, as well as by his Rings... It gets a lot easier to do safely.

After all, why impose her desires when their existing ones are much tastier?

"How do you contain her?"

"Strictly speaking, we don't. She likes us. We allow her to feel desires in ways she can't. And as long as she's getting what she wants, she's happy to stay in the Orange Central Power Battery and give us all a little boost."
I suspect that little discovery has made her the cock of the walk amongst the Embodiments. "My servants get me such tasty experiences! You lot should try it, maybe." 😏 At least until Ion points out he's been doing it for millennia as it is.

"A desire elemental bound by her own desires. Fitting. You don't have a soul."

"I didn't have a soul. Might I ask you to explain your reasoning?"
It's a work in progress, but it does what he needs it to do, mostly.

"This system is designed to bind power to your 'self'. I had thought that perhaps you were funnelling power into your soul in order to fuel yourself in some way, but you seemed ignorant of the side effects that should follow such an action. And given the permanent nature of these marks… And your generally sound judgement-."
The age-old difficulties of 'eating an energy field bigger than his head', eh?

"Quite a few people would laugh at that statement."

"It makes me think that you had something else in mind." He shakes his head. "You made sure that your newly formed soul would be invisible to magic, that it would be indelibly linked to you. How did you know to do this?"
At least OL is self-aware about his quirks. And that's an interesting question, considering OL's real sources of knowledge.

"I didn't, but I knew a man who could cut runes into souls and since a soul is basically a cheep form of immortality I knew that I wanted one."

"I genuinely didn't know that soulless life was possible. I.. can't actually create a theory for how it might have been done."
And that's got you extra curious, doesn't it?

"Do you want me to tell-?"

His head jerks around. "Don't you dare."
Spoilers, sweetie. Though he may well be horrified when he works out the possible causes.

He looks away, taking a moment to steady himself.

"Was there anything else?"
Oh, there's a great many things, but one or two stand out more than any other.

You know, talk, reassure them he's fine, let them discreetly check him for mystical mind-affecting control spells... Nothing to major.

"I suppose that's not unreasonable. Very well: you can have the run of the city for the rest of the day while I think about your ammunition."

"And try and work out how Hollow Men became real?"

"As much as I intend to try to avoid it." He looks at me closely. "You really are quite interesting."
Heh. OL has his diplomantic hooks in Ahri'ahn without doing anything more than stripping nude and standing there. Very nicely done.

Okay, that's progress! Getting some face time with Aquaman will definitely let the League work out whether this is a baby version of Anti-Life control, or just Ahri'ahn being foolishly old-fashioned about his cultural traditions. I expect OL will be meeting with Sephtian, Garth and Tula and others for the same reasons. Given how early in the course of thing sit is, there's still a lot of places for things to go hot.

Good to see him alive in this timeline.

To be fair, Earth did suffer at least one cultural collapse (in the Bronze Age) that likely set the progress of magic back considerably

I think the Renegade once mentioned that Ahri'ahn was responsible for the Bronze Age collapse because he thought thet were getting uppity.

A surprisingly liberated decision. I half-expected him to have dismissed Sephtian as 'a talented dabbler' or something because of his piscine features. I guess our manta boy impressed him with his work

This may be "one of the good ones" or "a credit to your people" type of thing.

Or he's trying to manipulate Paul by praising a guy he knows.

I suspect that little discovery has made her the cock of the walk amongst the Embodiments. "My servants get me such tasty experiences! You lot should try it, maybe." 😏 At least until Ion points out he's been doing it for millennia as it is

Plus the Proselyte.

The age-old difficulties of 'eating an energy field bigger than his head', eh?

Paul has a simple solution for that.

He can just make his head gigantic.

At least OL is self-aware about his quirks

Admitting you have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery.

I m afraid once more OL tries really really hard to do things "smart" instead of right. I am always amazed by his belief that his plans HAVE to be composed of a billion steps. Sometime a hammer is all you need. Ancient magician comes back from the dead, upsets a whole nation, enforces a caste system to it people, does shady mind control things. And if OL for a moment believes Arthur, the aquaman is OK with all this without being mind controlled or having a sword of damocles over his head I will it my hat. This is not a problem of coltural differences or somethings that need societal changes. He put a bullet through nabus metaphorical soul for less. The leech has to die

I think being cautious about the archmage who's had months to prepare his plan with no one else the wiser thanks to the rest of the world dealing with the Anti-Life is a reasonable course to take.

If it's good enough for the Sisko, it's good enough for Paul.

"Ah. Well, I would still like to speak to him. And… Do I talk to you about getting more ammunition created, or is that out of the question for the foreseeable future?"

"That would be your 'mage slayer' rounds, yes?"

Huh. I hadn't realized that the Mage Slayers were a resource to be replenished. I honestly thought that after Paul got the first of the production run he'd been replicating them ever since.

For a guy who appears to be setting up as the Next Big Bad (TM), Ahri'ahn seems to be a reasonable guy. He's got his prejudices, sure, but that isn't really surprising for an Archmage, in fact, it's pretty much in the job description.
