With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

A thought. With Ahri'ahn's general attitude, and the way he's affecting everything around Atlantis politically, could he be under the influence of Boss smiley?
It's possible.

While Ahri'ahn is a skilled and knowledgeable mage, he's still just one guy, and a bigoted one at that, so with him in charge magical research on the global scale could be halted.

And with him taking over It's possible that racist elements in Atlantis will feel emboldened.

Yeah, when Paul defeated Orm his supporters were later rounded up. But those were the most violent ones and you don't have to be a murderous nutjob to be a bigot, so even if Ahri'ahn is taken down, the various racist groups could still try to cling to power and relations between the various cities could sour and that could lead to stagnation.

Ahri'ahn really feels like Vivec here, me thinks. Immortal archmage disconnected from reality slipping in and out of time through radically diferent times?

I kind of like how political OL's being here, honestly. It probably will go tits up somewhere because radical changes are a pain in the ass to track over time and this is a daily update story, but it seems very reasonable for a in-character Paul to prefer the velvet gloves after being invaded by Darkseid, considering even a single Ahri'ahn like figure would have done a lot to help defend Earth.

This is pure personal preference, but I'd like to see him ramping up his GEoM desires eventually. I know he's immortal in most ways that matter and is naturally predisposed to do things slow and steady now but it feels like it'd become really interesting to see how his allies would start seeing him considering his innermost desires that I think(?) that he hasn't told anyone.

I m afraid once more OL tries really really hard to do things "smart" instead of right. I am always amazed by his belief that his plans HAVE to be composed of a billion steps. Sometime a hammer is all you need. Ancient magician comes back from the dead, upsets a whole nation, enforces a caste system to it people, does shady mind control things. And if OL for a moment believes Arthur, the aquaman is OK with all this without being mind controlled or having a sword of damocles over his head I will it my hat. This is not a problem of coltural differences or somethings that need societal changes. He put a bullet through nabus metaphorical soul for less. The leech has to die.
While we readers might know that Author Ex Machina means that Paul can just facepunch his way through this if he wants.

From an in universe perspective Paul not just doing so makes at least a little sense since he doesn't know whether Ahri'ahn can do something like pinch his fingers together and completely annihilate him from existence.

There's also the fact that Ahri'ahn brought Atlantis up, so even if Paul did kill him, which he can if he does something like merge with the Ophidian, there's a chance that Ahri'ahn set things up so that Atlantis would sink again if that happened and that would be devastating.

I push the door to the mansion's medical centre open, a smile on my face. "Darling, I was wondering-?"

Anne-Marie has.. leapt into the air and is looking at me nervously, while Henry just looks as puzzled by her reaction as I feel.

"Something..? Wrong?"

She lands, and walks up to me while… Avoiding meeting my eyes. I reach out with my right hand and gently redirect her chin upwards.

"Clearly something is wrong, and I hope you're not going to do anything so mawkish as to make me repeat my wedding vows."

She makes an amused snort, taking my right hand in hers and holding it against her right cheek. "Ah don't think ah'd mahnd hearin' it again, sugah."

"For better, for worse,
In sickness and in health.
And I mean it
. So."

She sighs, nodding. "Ah was wonderin' 'bawt us havin' kids."

I raise my left eyebrow. "Shouldn't you be talking to me about that? As I understand the process I would have to be involved."

She rolls her eyes. "Whether ah can even have kids. Ah can't exactly make a barrier insaad myself."

I frown thoughtfully, left fore finger pointing. "Didn't you..? That time..?"

She blinks, then blushes, knocking my hand away. "Not.. that kinda-."

She glances awkwardly back at Henry, who coughs into his fist and turns away to tidy some paperwork.

"Okay, firstly." I step up to her and wrap my arms around her, before craning my neck down to nuzzle the top of her head. She returns the gesture immediately, relaxing into me. "You can always talk to me about anything."

"Ah know. I jus' ferget sometahms."

"Then I just simply have to start reminding you more often. Though, yes, I don't think the Impact Beam ring can safely prevent you touching a foetus growing in your womb, so don't even think about using it like that."

"How 'bawt yer ring?"

"Ah… There would be adverse psychological affects to you, and you'd have to wear it for at least the nine month gestationary period. And I don't know what that would do to the child, and… It tends to glitch when I recharge it."

She presses her face into my shoulder.

"Oh."

"But I don't think that actually matters. You remember how Sean and Tom Cassidy couldn't affect each other directly with their powers?"

Her head jerks up, narrowly avoiding my chin as I twitch back.

"And how Scott and Alex can't affect each other?"

"Ah, yes." Henry pats his files into a block as we reach a 'safe' portion of the conversation. "It appears that, at some level, the x-gene and its manifestations are able to identify their own genetic code. I suspect it's part of the same mechanism that prevents Scott damaging his own eyes whenever he fires an optical blast. Unfortunately, there aren't enough examples of 'open' mutant families to study the exact mechanism." He looks at me. "But if you're implying that Anne-Marie wouldn't risk draining her child, then you may well be correct."

Anne-Marie shakes her head. "Ah ain't sure I wanna risk it on a 'maybe', Hank."

Huh. And it might just be mutants who get protected. I mean, we can ask Sean if it works like that between him and his daughter, but asking him if he'd mind blasting his parents so we can test a theory seems a bit off. Wanda Maximoff has already blasted Mr. Lensherr, but we're not really clear if that's a mutant power or magic. Same with Cain Marko.

I pull away, and roll up my right sleeve. "I've got an idea. It's a bit morbid, but it should either put your fears to rest or confirm them. And if it confirms them, then…" I shrug. "The Shi'ar Empire has some very nice exo-wombs, which wouldn't be ideal, but it would work."

"Whut ya'll got in mahnd?"

I-.

I bow my head, chuckling.

"Some kinda hold urp?"

"Wrong emotional resonance. I'm going to need a moment for 'love' to fade into the background again." I shrug, smiling at her. "What can I say? You make me weak."

She smiles back. "Thawt ya'll wann'ed t'go easy on the mawkish."

"I should." Clear the mind, clear the mind.

I reach up with my right hand and slap myself.

"Okay, ready." I stare at my right hand as a glove forms around it. "Right. Now turn off the Impact Force ring and take off your glove."

"Am as gunna like the answer if'n ah wai?"

"I made this glove out of cloned skin. I want to see if your power reacts to it." She looks uncertain as I take off my own ring. "A couple of seconds of contact is perfectly safe, and we're already in medical. There's no way to test your power without testing your power."

She takes a deep breath, and I once again fail to prevent myself ogling her breasts. Gosh, if pregnancy makes them bigger we're going to start needing to get bespoke bras. Then she pulls off her ring and puts it down next to mine before taking off her glove. And there's her wedding ring and engagement ring and this is why I usually ask not to be put on the same field team as her if we're dividing in two.

"Right, first test: your skin." She looks a little uncomfortable, but bears with it. I lay my gloved hand onto hers and… Nothing happens.

Henry comes closer, frowning thoughtfully. "Wouldn't a random control be a better place to start?"

"Probably." I touch the power ring with my left hand and change the D.N.A. in the glove to that of Anne-Marie's father. The glove crumbles immediately and I-. I pull my now-bare hand away before I show outward signs of dizziness. Touch the ring, make a glove with the D.N.A. of Ms. Darkholm and touch-. Crumbles again. My D.N.A.? Crumbles, and Anne-Marie is starting to look uncomfortable.

Ring… Scan mine and Anne-Marie's D.N.A. and create a code for a possible child with the x-gene, then make a glove.

A new glove appears, and doesn't crumble. Excellent.

"Who's in this one?"

"A theoretically possible child of ours. One last test…" Without the x-gene

Crumbles.

I clear up the mess, nodding to myself. That's manageable. Our child can't inherit the x-gene from me, but I can check the D.N.A. of her eggs when she ovulates…

"What'd you fahnd out, hun?"

"Combine our D.N.A., and as long as there's an x-gene then there's no problem. No x-gene, problem. So we can have children. When do you want to start-?"

Oh no.

I grab her hands. "I'm sorry, I have to go and have a very unpleasant conversation with Multiple Man immediately."

"Whai-?"

Gogogo!

The scenery flickers around me, the mansion, the sky, the military base X-Factor calls home…

The alarms going off as I appear next to Mr. Madrox. "Sorry!" Guns raising and powers activating. "Sorry, but this couldn't wait."

Alex lowers his hands, exhaling in irritation. "Cancel the alarm! This better be important, Paul."

I nod. "It is." I generate a soundproof shield around myself and… And the closest three Multiple Men. "I'm sorry, but I've got some really shitty news and no way to soften the blow."

They look at each other, then shrug. "Hit me." / "Hit me." / "Hit me."

"X-gene-based powers appear not to work on close relatives who also have the x-gene. We assume that it's because they identify them as being part of the same body. Do you have any children?"

The middle one frowns. "No? What's that got to do with-?"

Left's eyes widen. "Oh." He then puts his right hand on middle's shoulder and gets absorbed.

Middle frowns, then his eyes widen. "Oh."

"I'm really sorry."

"No. No. Thank you for telling me. I… I don't like it, but… Fuck, imagine not knowing."

"Yeah." I nod. "That was my-. What I thought as well. Anne-Marie and I are looking into it, and I'll let you know what we find out."

"Yeah. Thanks." Right shrugs, so middle touches him and reabsorbs him. "Ah. Look. I… Need a moment..?"

I nod. "Right." I dismiss the barrier. "Again, I'm really sorry."

I don't know mutants enough… what's this referring to? Will his children split in the womb if he does or something?
He might absorb any kids he sires that have an X-gene. Better to find out like this now rather than compared to the doctor handing you your kid and his power eats it.

The x gene thinks closely related mutants are the same person. Multiple Man has powers that already operate on him having multiple, separate bodies that may complicate the x gene mechanism that Paul is hypothesized here. MM can create duplicate bodies and then absorb them back into himself, and the alternate bodies have a certain amount of psychic connection to his main body. So, his children might end up psychically connected to him before they're even born, preventing them from ever being a person, or he might accidentally absorb a child into himself. As such, he might either overwrite his children or kill them in a moment of carelessness if the xgene mechanism isn't understood and prepared for.

I read the storyline about that. That was a horrific thing for him to learn. Though he does later end up having a kid that he couldn't absorb, though that might be because his wife relied on magic to protect their son.

He and his friends were partying and got drunk.

A duplicate was created during this and he and the original went to have sex with the two different women.

One of them got pregnant, but because they were drunk they didn't remember who slept with who.

Eventually the baby is delivered and when he touches them they get absorbed into his body, which meant that the clone was the father.

Yeah, I remember reading that thing with Madrox's kid, it was horrifying for everyone involved. Glad it got noted now before it could happen.

Wouldn't it make sense that if the zygote doesn't have the x-gene then it doesn't take getting implanted in the uterine wall and so there's no pregnancy? Because, thinking about it, all her eggs should have the x-gene, but an specific fertilized one might not because instead it copied that section of DNA code from Paul... or something like that. Been a while since I studied this part of biology.

The way the x-gene behaves has little to nothing to do with how biology actually works, so its definitely a concern.

I push the door to the mansion's medical centre open, a smile on my face. "Darling, I was wondering-?"

Anne-Marie has.. leapt into the air and is looking at me nervously, while Henry just looks as puzzled by her reaction as I feel.
I guess things went well with Gambit, then. Hopefully she's not wearing a typical medical gown, or at least had underwear on under it... Then again, her normal suit is practically like a second skin anyway, so Hank might be able to get the usual diagnostics through it fine.

"Something..? Wrong?"

She lands, and walks up to me while… Avoiding meeting my eyes. I reach out with my right hand and gently redirect her chin upwards.
Far too soon for the Miss Marvel stuff to be kicking in. Then again...

"Clearly something is wrong, and I hope you're not going to do anything so mawkish as to make me repeat my wedding vows."

She makes an amused snort, taking my right hand in hers and holding it against her right cheek. "Ah don't think ah'd mahnd hearin' it again, sugah."
Okay, not the Miss Marvel stuff, so it's more likely that she's already thinking of children...

"For better, for worse,
In sickness and in health.
And I mean it
. So."

She sighs, nodding. "Ah was wonderin' 'bawt us havin' kids."
...Yup, there we go. And since she has life-force-absorbing powers, we can guess her big worry.

I raise my left eyebrow. "Shouldn't you be talking to me about that? As I understand the process I would have to be involved."

She rolls her eyes. "Whether ah can even have kids. Ah can't exactly make a barrier insaad myself."
There's always the question of whether her absorption power actually works internally.

I frown thoughtfully, left fore finger pointing. "Didn't you..? That time..?"

She blinks, then blushes, knocking my hand away. "Not.. that kinda-."
That answers a question I wasn't sure needed asking. I'm guessing they didn't check beforehand whether... Insertions count. Then again the skin contact needed for that sort of thing, well.

Joy of being the tall one in the couple. And poor Hank, having to deal with this sort of thing. Wonder how he looks when he blushes through his fur?

"Ah know. I jus' ferget sometahms."

"Then I just simple have to start reminding you more often. Though, yes, I don't think the Impact Beam ring can safely prevent you touching a foetus growing in your womb, so don't even think about using it like that."
Never mind the fact that she'd probably lose its capabilities for any other use if she did, and the difficulty of maintaining the mental focus to do so anyway.

"How 'bawt yer ring?"

"Ah… There would be adverse psychological affects to you, and you'd have to wear it for at least the nine month gestationary period. And I don't know what that would do to the child, and… It tends to glitch when I recharge it."
Plus, he probably tends to feel anxious when he's unable to wear it.

She presses her face into my shoulder.

"Oh."

"But I don't think that actually matters. You remember how Sean and Tom Cassidy couldn't affect each other directly with their powers?"
Ah, yes. The way related mutants cannot affect each other with their superpowers. At least for those with flashy directly physical effects, anyway.

Her head jerks up, narrowly avoiding my chin as I twitch back.

"And how Scott and Alex can't affect each other?"
Having met as part of Paul's little rush-around in earlier chapters. I presume they discovered that in a Danger Room training session.

Or Scott's eyelids when he closes his eyes. Or when he puts his hands in front of his eyes when he looses his visor or glasses. His power doesn't turn off, after all. Unless that little bit of brain damage got repaired.

Cain isn't a mutant, after all. Despite the tendency to make him one in adaptions, his power is drawn from an ancient god, Cyttorak (Also known for his 'Crimson Bands', as used by Doctor Strange.)

Though it would mean that Rogue couldn't touch her own child without protection, depending on x-gene interactions.

I-.

I bow my head, chuckling.

"Some kinda hold urp?"
Oh, hey, been a long time since we saw an Alt!Paul have performance issues due to conflicting emotions.

"Wrong emotional resonance. I'm going to need a moment for 'love' to fade into the background again." I shrug, smiling at her. "What can I say? You make me weak."

She smiles back. "Thawt ya'll wann'ed t'go easy on the mawkish."
I imagine he's very careful about feeling that way in combat situations.

"I should." Clear the mind, clear the mind.

I reach up with my right hand and slap myself.
That's one way to do it. Much to Hank and Rogue's amusement, I bet.

"Okay, ready." I stare at my right hand as a glove forms around it. "Right. Now turn off the Impact Force ring and take off your glove."

"Am as gunna like the answer if'n ah wai?"
...And I though Gambit's Lousiana mushmouth was hard to understand sometimes.

What is it with female mutants and being incredibly beautiful, barring oddball power expression...

"Right, first test: your skin." She looks a little uncomfortable, but bears with it. I lay my gloved hand onto hers and… Nothing happens.

Henry comes closer, frowning thoughtfully. "Wouldn't a random control would be a better place to start?"
Just pick an X-man to clone their skin? Seems a bit wasteful.

Three tries, three failures, yeah. I can see it getting her down, even if she's not getting any mental impacts from it.

Ring… Scan mine and Anne-Marie's D.N.A. and create a code for a possible child with the x-gene, then make a glove.

A new glove appears, and doesn't crumble. Excellent.
Well, that's a good sign.

"Who's in this one?"

"A theoretically possible child of ours. One last test…" Without the x-gene
Because that's entirely possible, especially with his extra-universal origin.

Crumbles.

I clear up the mess, nodding to myself. That's manageable. Our child can't inherit the x-gene from me, but I can check the D.N.A. of her eggs when she ovulates…
Or even go so far as to make use of Ring-based IVF and implant it manually to be certain.

"What'd you fahnd out, hun?"

"Combine our D.N.A., and as long as there's an x-gene then there's no problem. No x-gene, problem. So we can have children. When do you want to start-?"
No need to sound so eager, Paul.

Oh no.

I grab her hands. "I'm sorry, I have to go and have a very unpleasant conversation with Multiple Man immediately."
Ah, yes... The infamous story in which he reabsorbed a child because his power has a phenomenally bad sense of separation.

Remind me, has this alt!Paul worked out transitions yet?

The scenery flickers around me, the mansion, the sky, the military base X-Factor calls home…

The alarms going off as I appear next to Mr. Madrox. "Sorry!" Guns raising and powers activating. "Sorry, but this couldn't wait."
...Kind of, it seems. I guess he panicked enough that he didn't think to call ahead.

Since even if none of them isn't the original, he'll know when they reintegrate with him.

They look at each other, then shrug. "Hit me." / "Hit me." / "Hit me."

"X-gene-based powers appear not to work on close relatives who also have the x-gene. We assume that it's because they identify them as being part of the same body. Do you have any children?"
Not a known factor in the animated series, but it's not unreasonable to assume he's already started the cycle of sending duplicates off to learn skills and return.

The middle one frowns. "No? What's that got to do with-?"

Left's eyes widen. "Oh." He then puts his right hand on middle's shoulder and gets absorbed.
Case in point. I guess this one got lucky with someone, or simply had a different train of thought, which the dupes do.

Middle frowns, then his eyes widen. "Oh."

"I'm really sorry."
At least he knows to be careful now.

"No. No. Thank you for telling me. I… I don't like it, but… Fuck, imagine not knowing."

"Yeah." I nod. "That was my-. What I thought as well. Anne-Marie and I are looking into it, and I'll let you know what we find out."
I hope Madrox will explain it to his teammates, rather than leave them in the dark. While none of them have powers that might cause issues like that, better to know than not.

"Yeah. Thanks." Right shrugs, so middle touches him and reabsorbs him. "Ah. Look. I… Need a moment..?"

I nod. "Right." I dismiss the barrier. "Again, I'm really sorry."
And then make your apologies for busting in. I'm sure they'll understand that your 'power' is emotion-based, so they might excuse the intrusion.

This little plotline promises to have all manner of quirky little consequences for the X-men in the months to come, no doubt. For a start, would Rogue be disadvantaged physically by late-term pregnancy, given flight and superstrength? And which enemies will be watching closely out of curiosity, such as Mystique and Mister Sinister... X-Babies always complicate matters. x3

There's always the question of whether her absorption power actually works internally.

Not something people usually consider.

I know there was something similar mentioned in this story about how a super strong woman could harm her child while she's giving birth because the muscles on her insides are strong.

And I though Gambit's Lousiana mushmouth was hard to understand sometimes.

Just watch some Undead Humor videos on YouTube and prepare to bust a gut.

Charles: Do you want to hear my contingency plan for you, Paul?

Paul: Why not.

Charles: A telepathic attack to induce brain death.

Paul: What?!

Charles: A genetically engineered virus that can bypass your constructs and kill you.

Paul: You made a virus?!

Charles: Fish heads.

Paul: ...what...?

Charles: You heard me. Fish heads.

Paul: How-how would fish heads stop me?

Charles: It's quite simple, really. I'd leave a bowl filled with fish heads that have been soaked in tea on the floor. Once you see them your natural British instincts to eat disgusting food will kick in and you'll be hyper focused on consuming them that your ring won't create a shield around you. But because you're distracted with the horrible food, you'll never notice the anvil that I'm going to drop on your head.

What is it with female mutants and being incredibly beautiful

Doylist and Watsonian reason.

Doylist:

To sell comic books to horny boys and girls.

Watsonian:

Well the two main teams we see, the X-Men and Magneto's crew, either live in a mansion or a country of their own, so they have access to good food and regularly exercise.

And even if they engage in fighting, they're either super durable or can create force fields.

doubt. For a start, would Rogue be disadvantaged physically by late-term pregnancy, given flight and superstrength

I'm reminded of The Fresh Prince when Vivian would crush the hands of various people during her pregnancy.

You could also just make her a power dampening necklace to wear for 9 months.
That could work, or it could easily cause a lot of problems.

If a very big part of her biology is shut down for so long then who knows what could happen later on.

Once the baby is born and she stops using the necklace it could easily lead to the kid being vulnerable to her powers because they didn't experience them in the womb.

There are no negative side effects to X-Men 97 power dampeners.

Has anyone on that show worn one for months on end?

Were they also pregnant during all that time and gave birth with those on?

If not then then there's a chance that it can have negative side effects the way taking certain medication can have negative consequences if they're taken by someone while they're pregnant.

It was designed by Forge, a mutant who's power is that they can make anything technology related they want.

Forge's power is 'Invention' as I understand things. He makes things, but he doesn't quite understand what he's made or how he made it until After he's made it and then tests it and takes it apart to figure out how it works. He's Intelligent without his powers, and even has some magic in his blood line that would let him roll with Dr Strange if he ever really applied himself on that front, but the mutant power itself is a bit ... hit and miss?
