With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

An amusing example, given Supes probably made his 'Kal-El' name public, but people assume he wouldn't have a secret identity anyway.

The fact that he doesn't wear a mask could lead people to assume that he doesn't have a secret identity, unlike Batman or the Flash, who both dear masks.

Or the priests are in on this. Which is quite a bit more worrying.
Well we know that gods don't get much respect, so maybe their priests also don't get it.

And they want to take over.

OL? Try 'richest man on Earth' if he felt like it. Only reason he hasn't is a reluctance to crash the market for exotic materials, and making people dependant on him for it. I wouldn't try gouging him for more pay, though. You boys are already getting the equivalent of thousands of pounds.
Rich enough to offer to finance a project for Lex Luthor and tell him he'd want to see receipts.

Is this the first time we've had third person POV?
No, though it's pretty rare

"No, Miss Zatara. I haven't seen anything like that."

Zatanna frowns as she flicks through a tome purporting to be from ancient Atlantis, cell phone floating next to her right ear. Which isn't a great description because it could be anything from a few hundred to a few thousand years old, or even older. And that's assuming that it wasn't a medieval European wizard using the name for advertising.

Paul likes visiting people in person when he wants to talk to them, but she didn't really need to visit Sanderson when a simple phone call would do. And unless Morpheus did give him a vision of what was happening, there wasn't… Much point in getting him involved.

"Is that something Morpheus would send you a vision about?"

"Oh, he sure would. It's usually small scale violent crimes or just about anything involving the Dream."

"So why do you think he didn't send anything this time, he just doesn't want you involved?"

"People being in a trance doesn't prove that what happened involved the Dream or Dream-related magic. It could be hypnosis, or mind control, or it might even be a result of sleep deprivation."

And this chapter is on… Atlantean raiding parties attacking coastal towns? Ugh, would it have killed someone to add an index to this stuff?

"Wouldn't that count?"

"No. Dream isn't-." He pauses, thinking for a moment. "He doesn't consider himself obliged to people. He gets annoyed when people use his realm improperly, but he doesn't care about little things and he certainly isn't interested in proactively protecting people. I don't think he'd make a point of telling me just because something was preventing people from sleeping."

"Can you feel it when someone uses Dream-magic, or do you just get visions?"

"I can feel Dream sand. Things from the Dream that enter the real world usually do so using small amounts of it they've found, and magicians can trade for it. But I'd have to be close to it."

"What about spells?"

"I.. don't think so. I mean, I haven't yet. It's not very common, so it hasn't happened very often."

"Okay."

"I'm.. sorry I can't be more help…"

"No, that's fine. I wasn't sure that it was something to do with the Dream, but I needed to make sure. And now we know that it's not, we can cross that off our list."

"In that case, I'm glad that I could help."

Oh, that's not-.

"Ah, yeah, thanks. Speak to you later. Gnah pu."

The cell phone turns itself off and floats over to a side table, slotting itself into its charging cradle as she focuses on the book. Because this part is supposedly a copy of an older scroll which…

"Etalsnart."

Which was a recording made for the Kahndaqi archives of negotiations between Teth Adom and Queen Gamemnae about Atlantis's borders and their military cooperation. Ah… Lot of stuff about kingdoms that don't exist anymore… And-.

Huh.

They knew that she raised… Part of Atlantis-.

Another Zatanna walks in, a book on magical uses of clay floating next to her.

"Found anything?"

She shakes her head. "Not unless we think they're all golems."

"Do golems have body parts inside them?"

She grabs the book out of the air and shows her a page. "Apparently they can."

That's a.. lot of intestine.

"No, that's-"

She nods. "-too specialised. Those were mass produced. I don't think whoever did it made them one at a time."

She nods, agreeing with herself, and… Thinking that maybe Dad was right about spending more time with the girls from school. But when you're the best magician in your age group, who else are you going to do research with?

"Sanderson says that it's probably not the Dream."

"I don't suppose they just conjured huge amount of clay and propped Atlantis up on that?"

Could..?

She shakes her head. "Normal conjuration couldn't make that much and opening a portal that big to the Plane of Earth would have set off every detector the League has and knocked out every magician on the planet, including us."

"Unless Ahri'ahn is actually strong enough that he can conjure that much rock."

"If he was that strong it would be easier to just make Atlantis fly or something."

"But he's trying to restore it to the way it was. Even if he could make it fly, he wouldn't want to."

"So… What does he want to do?"

She glances back at her own book. Apparently, Queen Gamemnae used prisoners as slave labor, which isn't too odd. But according to the official Atlantean history, they weren't criminal-prisoners so much as anyone who disagreed with her. Which isn't strange for human history but was against Atlantean tradition. And if she hadn't had people who supported her then she wouldn't have been able to rule.

"Everyone knows that he made the spells that remade normal humans as Atlanteans. But even after all this time we don't know how or why the Sinking happened."

She nods. "So he didn't reverse it for the good of Atlantis. He reversed it because it was a personal insult. Because he couldn't stop it."

"Maybe. But it's not like anyone else really cares if Atlantis is on the surface or not. The only people who'd really object are other Atlanteans."

"That's got to annoy him."

She frowns. "It's been thousand of years. He can't be mad at them for not caring about something their ancestors went through."

"Or he could be really mad about it."

She raises an eyebrow. "Mad enough to attack his own people with zombies?"

"They didn't really attack his people. Just us when we started looking into it. I don't know-."

The communicator beeps, and they both look at it.

"Egrem." / "Egrem."

She takes a moment to calm herself from the shock of having two sets of slightly divergent thoughts running on her brain… And then they integrate, two sets of memories integrating perfectly by her magic and the flexibility of the human brain. Then she picks up the communicator.

"Zatanna."

"Hey, Zatanna."

"Oh, hey Megan. What's up?"

"Cornwall Boy's friends found some clay zombie wizards. They were working on a rune but no one here recognises it."

Zatanna nods. Strange that Atlantean wizards would be working on something that other Atlanteans didn't recognise… "I can take a look?"

"Sending it now."

An image appears on the screen… She must have drawn it, because it's not a photograph, which means that she can't be sure that it's exactly right. She looks around the library for a moment, and at the whole section on runes and sigils from hundreds of different cultures.

No.

"Tahw si siht?!"

The stacks rumble for a moment, then a single slim book flies out and lands in front of her, open at a page… Yes, that's the rune.

Oh.

"Apparently it means something like… 'Joy'."

"Oh. That doesn't sound so bad."

"Forcing people to enjoy what you want them to is a pretty successful form of mind control. I'll read up on it and tell you more later."

"And I'll get King Sha'ark to put a strike force together. I'll let you know how it goes."

How often does Zatanna use this spell? Because I imagine overuse could have adverse side effects. Also, that should say 'sets'.

"Apparently it means something like… 'Joy'."

Does this mean they now believe Ahri'ahn is behind this? Or are they only going to attack the zombies?

Hm… could also be attempting to tap into the Emotional Spectrum. They've had a recent example of just how powerful that can get, and how possible it is to convince the embodiments of certain emotions to just let you do whatever you want with their power.

A brief google indicates that Joy actually does have a canonical "Gold" Lantern in the League of Superheroes as well, but the guy who wrote that apparently actively avoids learning the lore and just does whatever the fuck he wants so a lot of people understandably dislike his works.

Oh, ho? A Chapter of third-person omniscient involving Zatanna's perspective? This is a rare treat. can't write first-person all the time, after all. And it looks like she hasn't been idle in her research process.

I suspect he likes to be able to see their emotions as he talks. Even without looking deeper, he can sense the most surface-level spikes, after all. And it ensures that he's talking to the person he needs to rather than some flunky...

"Oh, he sure would. It's usually small scale violent crimes or just about anything involving the Dream."

"So why do you think he didn't send anything this time, he just doesn't want you involved?"
...Though I doubt Sandy would fob something like this off on anyone else.

Wouldn't be much use unless it was a compilation of much older documents. ...Which it probably is, given the comment. Maybe they wanted people to exercise their minds while they studied?

"Wouldn't that count?"

"No. Dream isn't-." He pauses, thinking for a moment. "He doesn't consider himself obliged to people. He gets annoyed when people use his realm improperly, but he doesn't care about little things and he certainly isn't interested in proactively protecting people. I don't think he'd make a point of telling me just because something was preventing people from sleeping."
And really, having him personally obligated to you can be as terrifying as his anger. Because he takes that shit deadly serious.

"Can you feel it when someone uses Dream-magic, or do you just get visions?"

"I can feel Dream sand. Things from the Dream that enter the real world usually do so using small amounts of it they've found, and magicians can trade for it. But I'd have to be close to it."
And given that even small quantities of it can be like a powerful, reusable narcotic, it's likely people take considerable care with it if they know what they're doing.

"What about spells?"

"I.. don't think so. I mean, I haven't yet. It's not very common, so it hasn't happened very often."
Since by its nature, the Dreaming and its essence are so capricious that the spell might not do want you want by the time you finish casting it.

"Okay."

"I'm.. sorry I can't be more help…"

"No, that's fine. I wasn't sure that it was something to do with the Dream, but I needed to make sure. And now we know that it's not, we can cross that off our list."
And by eliminating what it isn't, you get closer to what it might be.

"In that case, I'm glad that I could help."

Oh, that's not-.

"Ah, yeah, thanks. Speak to you later. Gnah pu."
Nice of her to be polite even with the apparent misunderstanding.

The cell phone turns itself off and floats over to a side table, slotting itself into its charging cradle as she focuses on the book. Because this part is supposedly a copy of an older scroll which…

"Etalsnart."
Ah, what some archaeological scholars wouldn't give for that spell...

Which was a recording made for the Kahndaqi archives of negotiations between Teth Adom and Queen Gamemnae about Atlantis's borders and their military cooperation. Ah… Lot of stuff about kingdoms that don't exist anymore… And-.

Huh.
Still interesting, given the people involved.

I knew that she raised… Part of Atlantis-.

Another Zatanna walks in, a book on magical uses of clay floating next to her.
...Self-duplication spell? Because I suspect that's more than a few people's fantasy.

"Found anything?"

She shakes her head. "Not unless we think they're all golems."
Not impossible, given how many OL and Nommo just fought. I'm guessing OL hasn't thought to update them yet, has he?

"Do golems have body parts inside them?"

She grabs the book out of the air and shows her a page. "Apparently they can."
The skeleton alone would save a lot of energy spent on structural integrity.

That's a.. lot of intestine."

"No, that's-"

She nods. "-too specialised. Those were mass produced. I don't think whoever did it made them one at a time."
The drawback of having another you to talk to is that because you think the same way, you tend to agree with each other a lot.

She nods, agreeing with herself, and… Thinking that maybe Dad was right about spending more time with the girls from school. But when you're the best magician in your age group, who else are you going to do research with?

"Sanderson says that it's probably not the Dream."
...That's just a little bit depressing. At least she's getting contact with other supers her age with the Team, at least?

"I don't suppose they just conjured huge amount of clay and propped Atlantis up on that?"

Could..?
I shudder to imagine how weak a foundation that would be, even if it hyper-compressed instantly...

She shakes her head. "Normal conjuration couldn't make that much and opening a portal that big to the Plane of Earth would have set off every detector the League has and knocked out every magician on the planet, including us."

"Unless Ahri'ahn is actually strong enough that he can conjure that much rock."
...Or he recalled it from wherever it had been sent back in the day.

"If he was that strong it would be easier to just make Atlantis fly or something."

"But he's trying to restore it to the way it was. Even if he could make it fly, he wouldn't want to."

"So… What does he want to do?"
That seems to be the biggest question. Ahri'ahn has a very specific idea of what Atlantis should be like, and he or someone else is trying to make it be the way he wants it to be.

Which would be a modest part of why she's so reviled, I expect.

"Everyone knows that he made the spells that remade normal humans as Atlanteans. But even after all this time we don't know how or why the Sinking happened."

She nods. "So he didn't reverse it for the good of Atlantis. He reversed it because it was a personal insult. Because he couldn't stop it."
Short of asking him directly, it's hard to guess at that sort of thing.

"Maybe. But it's not like anyone else really cares if Atlantis is on the surface or not. The only people who'd really object are other Atlanteans."

"That's got to annoy him."
The atlanteans have had three thousand years or more to adapt to the situation. The biggest objection they have is that he doesn't seem to be accounting for any of it, because 'that's not the way we did it.'

She frowns. "It's been thousand of years. He can't be mad at them for not caring about something their ancestors went through."

"Or he could be really mad about it."
...What if he's so mad he isn't even aware that he is? Some subconscious part of him is doing all these things? Because a mage that old (actively living or not) is bound to have some very peculiar quirks.

She raises an eyebrow. "Mad enough to attack his own people with zombies?"

"They didn't really attack his people. Just us when we started looking into it. I don't know-."
As far as he's concerned, maybe the clay zombies are protection? A contingency in case of external threats.

The communicator beeps, and we both look at it.

"Egrem." / "Egrem."
...What happens if one of her doesn't decide to merge? I mean, both of her think the same way, but... That would be a very strange battle of wills.

She takes a moment to calm herself from the shock of having two sets of slightly divergent thoughts running on her brain… And then they integrate, two sest of memories integrating perfectly by her magic and the flexibility of the human brain. Then she picks up the communicator.
Ah, repression and willpower. Always useful for overcoming psychological problems... (Not entirely, really.)

"Zatanna."

"Hey, Zatanna."

"Oh, hey Megan. What's up?"
Right, from one end of the trouble to another.

"Cornwall Boy's friends found some clay zombie wizards. They were working on a rune but no one here recognises it."

Zatanna nod. Strange that Atlantean wizards would be working on something that other Atlanteans didn't recognise… "I can take a look?"
It could be something kept deeply hidden from the mainstream. Some mystery cult working on their own plans...

"Sending it now."

An image appears on the screen… She must have drawn it, because it's not photograph, which means that I can't be sure that it's exactly right. I look around the library for a moment, and at the whole section on runes and sigils from hundreds of different cultures.
Right. Magic time. Split again, or...

No.

"Tahw si siht?!"
...Ah, the magical equivalent of reverse image search. Modern wizards!

The stacks rumble for a moment, then a single slim book flies out and lands in front of her, open at a page… Yes, that's the rune.

Oh.
Hmm... Interesting that it's so small. Some personal journal no-one ever bothered to inspect before, I wonder?

"Apparently it means something like… 'Joy'."

"Oh. That doesn't sound so bad."
That depends on what it's influencing people to consider joyful.

"Forcing people to enjoy what you want them to is a pretty successful form of mind control. I'll read up on it and tell you more later."

"And I'll get King Sha'ark to put a strike force together. I'll let you know how it goes."
Let's hope they aren't jumping the gun here... But everything does point to this being bad stuff.

Good to see everyone else isn't just sitting on their hands waiting for OL's return. It's something many a tale forgets: Things still happen when the main character isn't around. In this case, we may find King Shark's resistance group causing the collapse of whatever influence this rune (and however many other such are around) while OL investigates their source...

So he's half-perfect for elseworlds and oddities like timeline zigzagging. The other half of elseworlds stories generating fangasms and acclaim when things line up closely with existing canon, character behavior, etc. Or he'd be fun for fanfiction, though that kind of snobbish attitude would really hamper building up a fan following.

No, the Gold Lantern being powered by joy is from a fanfic page that also has cast listings for DC movies that don't exist that have Matt Bomer as Superman and Emmy Rossum as Catwoman for example.

While never explicitly stated in his comics appearances, the Gold Lantern is probably powered by Justice going by various hints.

Like for example the Gold Lantern is blind, because comic book writers are not above finding that clever.

Apparently they can."

That's a.. lot of intestine."

Either remove or add a " in the second sentence.

If he was that strong it would be easier to just make Atlantis fly or something."

"But he's trying to restore it to the way it was. Even if he could make it fly, he wouldn't want to."

Plus if he left a lot of rock under it then even if he somehow falls, the rock may still be there.

And if she hadn't had people who supported her then she wouldn't have been able to rule.

Not necessarily.

She was an extremely powerful wizard, so she may have been able to just force them.

because it's not photograph

"not a"

A few tense slip-ups (not surprising considering 99.5% of the story is first person!):

"In that case, I'm glad that I could help."

Oh, that's not-.

If this is supposed to be Zatanna's thoughts vis-a-vis the narration, it should be italicised.

I knew that she raised… Part of Atlantis-.
Either this entire line should be italicised, or 'She knew-'

The communicator beeps, and we both look at it.
'they'

Zatanna nod. Strange that Atlantean wizards would be working on something that other Atlanteans didn't recognise… "I can take a look?"
'nods'

An image appears on the screen… She must have drawn it, because it's not photograph,
'not a photograph'

which means that I can't be sure that it's exactly right. I look around the library for a moment,
'she'

Damn.

So:
We got a Zatanna PoV chapter. That only took ten years. :)

Zatanna has a Splintered Gale Shintai equivalent.

There's a plane of Earth, so D&D epic wizard shenanigans may be possible with enough arcanotech/archmages.

This was fantastic, Mr. Zoat. You're spoiling us!

"…you click on this-"

I can't help but smile as Dr. Balewa and I are led into the… Classroom? Office space? Where Prince Jivan is showing Rama Khan how a computer works. I'm getting flashbacks to me doing something similar with my grandparents.

"-and the program opens up."

Rama Khan nods indulgently. "I see. And this teaches you things, does it?"

"Yes, Grandpa Khan! You can learn just about anything you want about anything! Pick a subject! Anything at all!"

He glances at us for a moment, then goes back to looking at the screen. "Jarhanpur, of course."

"Ah, well, there's not much about us." He brings up a search engine and types the word in. "Jar-han-pur."

He presses 'enter' and a number of links appear, though no images at all.

Jivan frowns. "You should let people come and take pictures, so people know what we look like."

"Why would I want people to know what we look like?"

Jivan rolls his eyes before turning to face his tutor. "Because everyone does it! Not doing it is weird."

"Ah." Rama Khan nods. "Of course. How silly of me."

And at that point Jivan notices that we've been escorted into the room. He jumps off his chair and runs over to us-. Over to me, smiling broadly.

"Orange Lantern! And…" He looks blankly at Dr. Balewa. "Um."

Dr. Balewa raises his right hand and briefly causes us all to be enshrouded in fog. "I em called Doctor Mist."

Jivan tries bending so that his head's outside the mist while his body is still inside to see if he can still see himself. Then he looks up at Dr. Balewa. "Are you a wizard?"

"Yes, I em a wizard." He clenches his right hand and the mist vanishes, and Jivan's attention is momentarily drawn to the armoured rakshasa who moved up behind Dr. Balewa the moment the mist appeared. "But I em afraid that we are here to speak to your… Grandpa."

"Is it about something important?"

"Yes, it is."

"Like Atlantis coming out of the water?"

Dr. Balewa nods. "Yes, thet exactly."

Jivan looks back excited at 'Grandpa Khan' as he walks over, a more serious expression on his face. "Are you going to be a superhero again, Grandpa? Are you?"

"No. But it seems that those who are superheroes wish to ask for my advice." He gestures to a.. mat laid out on the floor nearly. "Please, sit, and I will give you what advice I can."

I walk over, lower myself down and… Sit, legs crossed. Dr. Balewa adopts a more relaxed position next to me. Rama Khan's matches my own posture, though I note that his joints seem a bit slower to bend than mine. He did say that he expected to start aging now. Jivan joins us too, sitting next to his mentor and carefully mirroring him.

"Jivan should hear this, as part of his education."

"Did you know that Doctor Balewa is actually older than you?"

Rama Khan looks mildly surprised. "Is that true?"

"I established the Kingdom of Kor, though I heff preferred more modest positions since then."

Rama Khan nods respectfully. "Before it fell, it was a centre of magic learning. I believe that Queen Gamemnae mentioned it as the source of Atlantis's magic tradition."

Dr. Balewa shakes his head. "No. They surpassed us long ago, even before her reign. Orange Lantern appears to be of the opinion thet you should have invited me to join your team."

"I'm not saying they should, I'm just saying that it would have made sense."

"Had we known of you, we may well have done. But we did not have these-" He angles his eyes at the computer. "-all-knowing machines. There could have been a dozen heroes of note within a short distance of our borders and we would not have known of them."

"That's why you need pictures, Grandpa. How can people tell you things if they don't know who you are?"

Rama Khan lays his left hand on his heir's shoulder. "Very well, Jivan. We shall have pictures. I will speak with Adom and Adrianna about-" Jivan sort of twitches, then controls himself. "-how it should be done."

"Not to blow my own trumpet too hard, but I did public relations for Adom while he was getting himself situated. Or I can recommend an agency."

"Thank you, but that is not why you are here."

"We were wondering if you heff any objects imbued with Queen Gamemnae's magic. The magics which heff been used to raise Atlantis appear to be based on theh system which she used, and I wish to know how safe they are. Or if you know in detail how her system worked, then I would be pleased to hear it."

Rama Khan looks increasingly concerned. "What is happening?"

"We are not certain. At the moment, we want to gather as much information as we can. In particular, we heff been attacked by animated corpses whose bodies are partially restored with clay."

"And we're not sure if Ahri'ahn is being suspicious or is just a man out of time. We'd have gone to Adom, but given what happened to him I was pretty sure that he wouldn't be able to help."

"Restored with clay?"

I glance at Jivan… And then take out a hologram projector and play the part of the fight where I sonic blasted the gorillaman.

"Like that."

"That is a spell that I could do. I would not, as it violates the cycle of samsara, and I could only use the soil and dead of Jarhanpur, but it is within my power."

"Do you recognise it, or do you simply understand how it could be done?"

"No, I know it. I taught it to Gamemnae myself." He looks awkward for a moment. "I was not as devout in my youth as I am now. I thought that… Since her people had no respect for the cycle that it was not a bad thing. Or that was what I told myself. She was very beautiful, and powerful."

"Were you married, Grandpa?"

"No. If she had not been a queen in her own land I would have asked her." He sighs. "And I would have been a fool."

"And why-?"

"She murdered our allies. Sela, Anointed One and Tezumak died so that she could take their power. She would have murdered the rest of us as well had the spirit of Jarhanpur not showed me her treachery." He sighs. "I do not know why. But I do know that it was not a spur of the moment decision. She had planned it for some time. If my mentor had not been dying and so required me to return home more frequently, she may have killed me as well."

Two out of three were total monsters, but it was still a pretty unpleasant thing to do.

"I have a small charm which she gave to me. You are welcome to it, if you believe that it will help you. I would only ask, for my own peace of mind, that you tell me what her involvement was when your investigation is concluded."

I nod. "Thank you, and certainly. One last question. Where did you put her body?"

I think that should say 'no'.

And here I was under the impression that Gamemnae's allies weren't aware of her vile nature, mostly because Adom seemed to speak fondly of her as he did of his other comrades.

Instead, I'm suspecting that Adom suffered Shazam's betrayal just before Gamemnae could execute her own treasonous scheme and that was the fall of the Ancient League.

Could somebody remind who were all the members?

So there is a non-zero chance that Ahri'ahn accidentally woke up undead lich Gamemnae when he raised Atlantis and she is up to no good
There is a chance it wasn't accidental as well and instesd Ahri'ahn, when researching how to raise Atlantis, found out about her (if he didn't already know her) and resurrected her to assist him with all of this.

"…you click on this-"

I can't help but smile as Dr. Balewa and I are led into the… Classroom? Office space? Where Prince Jivan is showing Rama Khan how a computer works. I'm getting flashbacks to me doing something similar with my grandparents.
I take it he's adopted some modern infrastructure in the year or two since Jivan entered his apprenticeship. Unless the computer is powered by a tiny storm elemental or some such, and linked to the outside world by sympathetic magic internet. 😏

"-and the program opens up."

Rama Khan nods indulgently. "I see. And this teaches you things, does it?"
In a way, it's a modern kind of magic. Click the thing, it does a thing. Most people don't know squat about the programming and calculations and communications done behind the scenes to make their Facebook appear in their browser, or whatever they're doing...

"Yes, Grandpa Khan! You can learn just about anything you want about anything! Pick a subject! Anything at all!"

He glances at us for a moment, then goes back to looking at the screen. "Jarhanpur, of course."
Heh, like an indulgent grandfather. I see he's enjoying himself now.

"Ah, well, there's not much about us." He brings up a search engine and types the word in. "Jar-han-pur."

He presses 'enter' and a number of links appear, though no images at all.
Ah, of course it's a local site. Not sure things like Google even exist in the DC-internet. It's hard to actually search for that sort of thing, it just brings up official and fansites for DC the company. 😒

Jivan frowns. "You should let people come and take pictures, so people know what we looks like."

"Why would I want people to know what we looks like?"
Because the world is far more connected these days, and you cannot squat in your valley forever, elder. Satellite scans can probably detect it from thousands of miles above, beyond the range of any concealment spell. Or if they work on it, then software can recognise errors in the geography where it is concealed. Better to manage knowledge of your existence yourself, than let someone else do it.

Jivan rolls his eyes before turning to face his tutor. "Because everyone does it! Not doing it is weird."

"Ah." Rama Khan nods. "Of course. How silly of me."
Ah, the social media generation. The next age of superheroes is going to be an online one, I suspect.

And at that point Jivan notices that we've been escorted into the room. He jumps off his chair and runs over to us-. Over to me, smiling broadly.

"Orange Lantern! And…" He looks blankly at Dr. Balewa. "Um."
Heh. Little kids around people they don't know. I doubt it's the first time he's seen anyone as dark as Nommo, but it's not impossible. Plus if he's in his fabulous superhero outfit...

Dr. Balewa raises his right hand and briefly causes us all to be enshrouded in fog. "I em called Doctor Mist."

Jivan tries bending so that he's head's outside the mist while his body is still inside to see if he can still see himself. Then he looks up at Dr. Balewa. "Are you a wizard?"
Well, making a mist is a decent superpower, especially if they can control other kinds of vapour or even aerosols... 🤔

"Yes, I em a wizard." He clenches his right hand and the mist vanishes, and Jivan's attention is momentarily drawn to the armoured rakshasa who moved up behind Dr. Balewa the moment the mist appeared. "But I em afraid that we are here to speak to your… Grandpa."
...Right, performing even a simple spell like that in the presence of both the ruler of the country and his heir might have been a little much. Good thing you have OL to vouch for you.

"Is it about something important?"

"Yes, it is."
Ah, children's questions. I wonder if he's expecting to be sent off to study or something so 'the grown-ups can talk'.

"Like Atlantis coming out of the water?"

Dr. Balewa nods. "Yes, thet exactly."
Well, he's certainly up on his world affairs. Though I suspect his magical training was far along enough for him to have been aware of it.

It's good to see he's mellowed out a bit since his first run-in with modern superheroes.

How cute, he's trying to seem mature. x3

"Jivan should hear this, as part of his education."

"Did you know that Doctor Balewa is actually older than you?"
Interesting choice to start off with a little small talk like that.

Rama Khan looks mildly surprised. "Is that true?"

"I established the Kingdom of Kor, though I heff preferred more modest positions since then."
Too much hassle to be in charge, eh? Or just a general sense of 'people can govern themselves without me poking my nose in.'

I suspect it was a case of just missing each other, taken on the scale of decades rather than minutes.

A good point. The world was a lot less open then, more compartmentalised by the nature of ancient kingdoms to prefer smaller territories to some degree.

I wonder what the sub-continental nations will think of learning of a powerful magical nation hidden away between their borders? If nothing else, Rama Khan's bearing and character might appeal to some cultures.

"Not to blow my own trumpet too hard, but I did public relations for Adom while he was getting himself situated. Or I can recommend an agency."

"Thank you, but that is not why you are here."
Heh. Sidestepping the courtesies with direct action. His right as their host.

"We were wondering if you heff any objects imbued with Queen Gamemnae's magic. The magics which heff been used to raise Atlantis appear to be based on theh system which she used, and I wish to know how safe they are. Or if you know in detail how her system worked, then I would be pleased to hear it."
As good a cover as any for the League's investigation. After all, considering the upheavals it made when it rose, just imagine the trouble if it sinks a third time.

Rama Khan looks increasingly concerned. "What is happening?"

"We are not certain. At the moment, we want to gather as much information as we can. In particular, we heff been attacked by animated corpses whose bodies are partially restored with clay."
And that should be significant to him, certainly.

"And we're not sure of Ahri'ahn is being suspicious or is just a man out of time. We'd have gone to Adom, but given what happened to him I was pretty sure that he wouldn't be able to help."

"Restored with clay?"
Adom is probably still recovering from his ordeal during the Anti-Life, and setting matters right within the region.

I glance at Jivan… And then take out a hologram projector and play the part of the fight where I sonic blasted the gorillaman.

"Like that."
He's a little kid, he's probably gonna find the violence cool.

"That is a spell that I could do. I would not, as it violates the cycle of samsara, and I could only use the soil and dead of Jarhanpur, but it is within my power."

"Do you recognise it, or do you simply understand how it could be done?"
Because there is a definite distinction between the two. Knowing how it's done will make it easier for it to be undone.

"No, I know it. I taught it to Gamemnae myself." He looks awkward for a moment. "I was not as devout in my youth as I am now. I thought that… Since her people had no respect for the cycle that it was not a bad thing. Or that was what I told myself. She was very beautiful, and powerful."
Ah, lured by the pretty face and golden locks. Many a man's downfall.

"Were you married, Grandpa?"

"No. If she had not been a queen in her own land I would have asked her." He sighs. "And I would have been a fool."

"And why-?"
That would have been an interesting alternative setting. But she was just too damaged to make a happy family.

Founding members of what the wiki calls the 'League of Ancients'. Sounds like Rama Khan got lucky.

Ooh, good thinking, OL. Never assume someone is dead until you confirm their body is properly dead. And even so, there's always necrourgy.

Hmm... I'm with @Neruz on this. There's too many coincidental-seeming links for it to be anyone other than Gamemnae, but we can't set anything in stone until she or whoever is responsible appears on screen. At least Rama Khan is being helpful, and it looks like Jarhanpur got through the Anti-Life without too much trouble, even if he's having an interesting time getting to know technology.

Could somebody remind who were all the members?
The League of Ancients, as seen in the 'Obsidian Age' story arc of Justice League. Sela, the Anointed One and Tezumak were an african warrior demigodess, a sort of proto-superman from a pre-abrahamic hebrew faith and an ancient South American blood-powered warrior, respectively.
There was also the Whaler, a pre-eskimo fellow with energy constructs and a gregarious nature, and Manitou Raven, the amerind shaman who was sort of an update of Apache Chief. Plus Gamemnae and Rama Khan.

Winder how he felt the first time he heard that.

know what we looks like."

know what we looks like?"

"look like"

that he's head's outside

"his head's"

"Had we known of you, we may well have done

I think the first time Paul met him, Rama told him that he's heard of Mist.

Granted, that could have happened after he went back to his kingdom.

people had to respect for the cycle that it was not a bad thing. Or that

"had no respect"

I think that should say 'no'.
Thank you, corrected.

Yes, basically.
Could somebody remind who were all the members?
These guys plus Adom. I also shifted them back 2000 years so that they were closes to the end of green North Africa.
"look like"
"his head's"
Thank you, corrected.
Ah, the social media generation. The next age of superheroes is going to be an online one, I suspect.
Goodness me I hope not.
Found another error. That should say 'if'.
Thank you, corrected.

There is a chance it wasn't accidental as well and instesd Ahri'ahn, when researching how to raise Atlantis, found out about her (if he didn't already know her) and resurrected her to assist him with all of this.

Or she came back on her own, resurrected Ahri'ahn as her puppet, and has been behind this from the beginning.

It's nice to see Rama Khan doing well and raising Jivan. Has Jivan's mother stopped causing problems or have her views on magic changed at all since we last saw her?
