With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

"Well enough. Diana appears to be enjoying training with Knockout. I don't suppose-?"

"I've thought about it. I think maybe we could have them join the team. Eventually. But not yet. And I'm sure they're due some parental leave."

Wait, who are they talking about? I'm pretty sure that the Lords won't be joining stormwatch, but I don't know anyone but John and Shayera who could be considered new parents that Richard would know about.

"I'm… Curious." Kanto watches me cautiously as I study the five hundred year old mortal remains of Claudia Romanus. "You were not in attendance at Darkseid's court when I gained my god-name. Kanto Thirteen hadn't the whit to speak of my time on Earth. I chose not to, and I never heard Lord Darkseid do so. So how did you know of it?"
Oh-ho, this is something I'd not known. Kanto was basically wooing Lucrezia Borgia? So the Renegade is reviving her now?

Sinestro?

I'm sure that you can come up with a convincing lie on your own, Lantern Grayven.
Thank you, best AI Snark.

I meant, with the reconstruction.

The basic structure is simple enough. However, without a portrait, it simply isn't possible to recapture the specifics.

"Are you sure that you don't have a portrait?"
I thought there were images of Lucrezia? Or am I misremembering from Assassin's Creed games?

"It would have been hard to explain to her brother why I, a lowly page of insignificant birth, wanted a picture of his sister. I intended to have one commissioned after the wedding, but alas that proved impossible."

I can still see where Kanto 13's bomb tore open her abdomen; the damage to the bones of her ribs and pelvis is quite significant. The metallic residue suggests that her mortician more or less had to use some sort of metal corset to make the corpse stay in one piece. I hope that she lost consciousness quickly.
Ow.

"If you don't mind me saying, you're being surprisingly easygoing about this."

"I don't mind you saying that at all." "You heard what Lashina said when Granny died?"

I smile. "Alright then. Have you considered the possibility that Cesare Borgia wrote something about his most unusual page, the man who married his sister?" "Yes, of course."

"Considered. And dismissed. He wouldn't write anything so frivolous. One of his courtiers might have done, but the chance of it surviving for so long is… Slender." "She was bound to Granny Goodness, as I was bound to Lord Darkseid. With his death, some of the truths he impressed upon me seemed somewhat less true."
Heh, a fun reminder of where Kanto learned his courtly Swagger.

"I spent some time is a parallel universe, far more removed from this one than the one where I now make my home. There, I read it in a comic book."

"Hm. And how did the author know, I wonder?"
Hmm, so blase about it. Who in Renegade's timeline knows the comic book thing (that he knows of, at least?)

"Pass. Look…" I gesture to Claudia's corpse. "I've got a full genetic work-up, and the analysis of her bones gives me enough information on her general state of health and diet that I can mostly repair her body. But without a visual guide to work from it won't be exactly the same, and even as an aristocrat her health would have been less good than that of a modern human."
I'm sure you can make adjustments afterwards...

"Your alter ego's entire reason for taking Earth was to turn humans into New God lieutenants. And if learning such a technique was within his grasp, then it puts a new spin on the abilities of this Sector's former Green Lantern."

"Yes, thanks to the Father Box of Desaad Sixteen, I know how to do it. But perhaps we should give her a little time to adapt to being alive once more before revealing that her beloved is an alien god-assassin."
Bets on her having already suspected something?

"And of course you'll need to decide what you want in return."

"No. That isn't how I conduct my affairs." I theatrically hold my hands over the bones and begin. Restoring the bones to pristine condition is simple enough, though if there were any older breaks in the time-eaten parts those will be vanishing. Then comes cartilage and connective tissue. "Spend time with your wife, live the life that Kanto Thirteen and Darkseid denied you. And then, at some point in the future, if you actually want to work with me, then get in touch."
Ah, Renegade. Working your Godly ways of Acquisition.

"What happened to you, to make you this different? Or am I similarly liberated in the universe where you make you home?"

"I've never met Kanto Sixteen-." I frown as I reassemble Claudia's muscles and organs. "You know, given how Kantos used to be numbered, using 'universe numbers' to refer to the different versions of you is a little confusing."

"I know who you mean."
It's in the inflection, I expect.

"Well, him. So I've only got Desaad's old notes to tell me about his behaviour. But nothing there suggests that he's all that different to you. But consider the issue: the bonds binding you to Apokolips exist in your soul, tied to your god-name. The core of your identity is indelibly imprinted with that way of life. So if you want to leave…"

Kanto frowns at me, then his eyes widen and he actually steps back. "You would have to destroy-! You did that?"
Yes, not so brave about that, is he?

"From what I remember, yes." Nerves, veins and arteries, brain… No way to actually make the neural connections that she would have had in life, but I can create an unspecialised network. Skin and hair… And a dress where it won't matter if it gets coated in Lazarus goop.

"I'm impressed."

"Putting a person back together isn't that hard with a power ring. Even the Green Lanterns can sometimes manage it."
"Though I doubt that many have the required lack of squeamishness to do so..."

"No. Your determination. Your single-mindedness. You destroyed everything you were in order to becomes yourself."

"If I could have killed Father instead, I would have." I cut off the flow of yellow light to the now-repaired corpse. "Does she look like you remember her?"

"As close as I could expect a lifeless corpse to." He reaches forward and picks her up. "Still confident that you can deliver on your bargain?"
And so tender with her, even now. Amazing there's no trace of violet in him...

"More confident that I would be about having you coming after me and mine."

I lead the way over to where Sunset and Richard are checking over the Apokoliptian device I created for this process. The local version of Ra's al Ghul apparently didn't have quite the degree of knowledge that my version had, and even though it meant taking the construct-Lantern out of the basement where I'd had him writing his memoirs I felt that the increased reliability was worth the mental discomfort. But neither my Ra's nor the records Richard had access to via Batman could explain what this thing did to recapture the soul of the one it resurrected.

Which is why in place of the pool or a sarcophagus, the gently-bubbling goop fills one of Grayven 50's modified Sarcophageuses. Those things are designed to play about with souls, and with my Mother Box plugged into it to provide a link to the Source… That should be enough to return her soul. I still don't know enough about mind-soul interfaces to know how much she'll remember… Well. If this fails thenI'm sure that Sunset will embrace the challenge of improving the system.
Oh, dear, a kludge of human tech, magic and New God tech? There's no text big enough for the kaboom if this goes badly.

Speaking of-.

Ping.

Good show. "Now, Kanto, I must warn you that people resurrected by the Lazarus Pit are usually somewhat insensible for a time. And that there is no guarantee that we will succeed on our first try."
I'm sure he can keep her from hurting someone.

"I understand." He reverentially lays her in the goop bath, then steps back at Sunset presses the button to submerge her.

Hm. I should probably stick around, but this whole process could well end up taking hours. I sidle up to Richard.
Hoo, boy. Murphy's phone is ringing as we speak...

"How are you and Timothy holding up?"

"I still can't really believe that he's dead."

"I realise that you're not certain of your own feelings towards him, but he had a major impact on your life. It's only natural-."

"No, I literally can't believe that he's head. He had a minute between the boom tube opening and the Watchtower being destroyed. There are dozens of contingencies he could have activated in that time."
Indeed. This Batman is the second-most abused example of memetic Bat-god preptime fuckery (The ninteies/noughties version is number one).

I nod. "I see. I hope that you're right."

"How are the Lords settling in in your mountain?"

"Well enough. Diana appears to be enjoying training with Knockout. I don't suppose-?"
Heh, romance in the air or is Diana-50 too straight?

"I've thought about it. I think maybe we could have them join the team. Eventually. But not yet. And I'm sure they're due some parental leave."

I nod. "I'll pass that on." We watch the goop for a moment. "Hey, is there any chance I could take the ship off your-?"

"No."
Ah, Stormwatch get their own Carrier? How appropriate.

Seriously, though, I foresee the whole Kanto situation backfiring somehow. I'm sure we'll find out, though...

Godspeech discussion:
"I don't mind you saying that at all." "You heard what Lashina said when Granny died?"

I smile. "Alright then. Have you considered the possibility that Cesare Borgia wrote something about his most unusual page, the man who married his sister?" "Yes, of course."

Well kind of disappointed in Gravy's response to that question.

But I suppose an answer along the lines of "Oh, because they made you and your history. Every bit of pain in your life, including the death of your beloved, was crafted to make you an interesting bit of fiction for an audience intended to be comprised primarily of children" would be a bit cruel.

Which reminds me, Kirby showed up in a Sandman story. Kirby's Sandman, not Morpheus.

Sandman was fighting an army of demonic creatures to protect a young boy, and suddenly a figure appears from the the boy's imagination. A figure with a very Thor/New God look.

So with this new found ally Sandman succeeds, and then at the end of the story it's revealed that the young boy was Jacob Kurtzberg, the future Jack Kirby.

Oh-ho, this is something I'd not known. Kanto was basically wooing Lucrezia Borgia?

She was named Catherine in the comics, so either Zoat is going for something a bit more historically accurate, or he had a spare sister in this universe.

If this is the wrap-up then, awesome, it was a pretty good episode overall. Feels a bit weird that the other Stormwatch members didn't show up again but whatever. Another hard won victory for our Grayven... and it was just an errand at the beginning.

Also, are they talking about Grayven 50's ship at the end there? Because if they are, that ship is the Renegade's by right of Conquest, isn't it? It should obey him just like one of his weapons, and I don't think they can get a lot of use out of it, what with their 'Superhero'-style. And really, what right would they have to deny him his hard earned loot? He practically saved them all and they wouldn't have been able to do anything without him there; that's twice they owe him and not even a 'Thank You' card. They're lucky he likes his brother (this Barda feels more antagonistic, I'm fairly sure he would let her hang).

Oh-ho, this is something I'd not known. Kanto was basically wooing Lucrezia Borgia? So the Renegade is reviving her now?
No. One of Lucrezia's less important younger sisters.
After all the they're not letting Graven keep the ship? Seems kinda unfair. They can't even use it to the full extent that he can.
Scott can, once he's gotten used to it. Barda would probably find it easier.

Still seems rather churlish and ungrateful, given that Grayven-16 came here on a whim, took the brunt of the damage (again!) in order to fix a screw-up on the Lords' and Stormwatch's parts, and is now being given nothing but a swift kick in the ass to start him out the door.

Claudia was an Italian during the renaissance period.

Which means she would be in the Silver City, which means under the stories previously listed rules about such things you can't resurrect her with a Lazarus Pit.

Unless of course Zoat re-writes his own previously established rules about such things. :p

Mandatory religion does not mean that everyone is devout. Maybe she's in hell.

Or, you know, how he explicitly mentioned that he used apokolypse tech to connect directly to the source let him bypass that.

Not why he connected to the source. That was just in case there needs to be something like a soul attached to the body to resurrect. The way he's doing it now wouldn't have the same connection. There's no mystical link between the new body and the soul, that would likely be there for the recently deceased.

Also, did he say no resurrection from the Silver City? You may be right, I just don't remember when.

No, but being related to the Pope does. :p

You do realize in the best case of that actually working like you suggest, it would be quickly followed by the Silver City coming down and murdering them all for stealing a soul from their care? o_O

Justice Lord shenanigans aside, I wonder if Lord Batman has a better relationship with his adopted sons than Justice Batman did?

For rather obvious reasons, the Joker of the Lords universe never would have had the chance to traumatize the Bat Family the way he did in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

Really, the superhero game is probably a lot less stressful in general with the way the Lords just straight up lobotomized (or killed) all their villains.

Fascinating imagery... Goes to show you who he worries about.
Is it just imagery, or something more?

When he used the anti-life against Grayven and his wench woman, it seemed to give him actual information for their past about times when life did equal pain for them. Like as the counterpart to the source, has universal scope in its area, and can show established and relevant examples of how it is true, that actually did happen.

It's like weaponised Depression. You just don't feel like you have the energy to do anything... It's just so much easier to lay there...
That description made me think of this, and thanks I didn't need to sleep tonight.
It made be think of the Tyrant's Blade from the Book of Swords, Soulcutter.

I toss Granny Goodness's Mother Box to her.
Not a Mother Box.
The response is immediate and obvious. Lashina attaches the Mother Box to her
Again, not a Mother Box.

The Renegade hasn't heard that specific one referred to as either Mother or Father.
No, but he did refer to it as a Father Box when he took of off of her soon to be corpse.

Also, there is an element of logic involved, since there seems to be actual differences between Father Boxes and Mother Boxes in programming/loyalty, what with him smashing the Father Box he had after finding out it was unfaithful to him. Or Barda not being able to use a captured Mother Box before Renegade/Paragon (cannot remember) convinced it to in the story. On knowing the person who makes Mother Boxes is an enemy of the Elite oppressing the lowlies.

But mainly, internally thinking about a probable Father Box as a Mother Box seems like a really bad idea, unless you know it is one, from a 'Is this New God AI predisposed to act against my interests or not' perspective.

Ah. Well, let's say that Grayven doesn't know and so isn't being consistent.
Ok, I get that you are probably just indulging your inner prat here, but Mother/Father Boxes are New God Tech designed to interface with and be receptive to New God Magic. And they feel different from each other. That is why they have different sounds when they speak. Father Box was like *Plong* and the Mother Boxes we have seen are like *Ping*

So even if you couldn't tell just from it talking, (and since you know whether it is a Mother Box or a Father Box, might want to make sure that *Ping* it made earlier is correct...)

I dart towards her and grab her Father Box before she can call up a new boom tube. Mine Now. Then I grab her by the hair and hold her up.
He should have been able to tell when he used his New God Powers to claim ownership of it.

Wouldn't be the first time.
Yeah. Future Zoat, fuck that guy! He's probably a real asshole, deserves everything he's got coming to him...

The Sword of the Fallen automatically reincarnates anyone stabbed by it as a fully grown being.
Minus all their cool powers. Which means the Omega Beam falls out of the Bag of Spilling and is now up for grabs however those things are determined.

"Hey, is there any chance I could take the ship off your-?"
Is this the New God Battleship they are talking about? Why are they even talking about this? Is was Grayvens battleship. Who Grayven killed. This is not just "Kill the bad guys and take their stuff," murderhobo logic, it is an actual War Trophy here.

I can't even parody something that stupid.

yeah when the Rebirth initiative started the writer of Heroes in Crisis was good, but recently hes been going off the deep end in his writing, and through the floor.

it doesn't help the dude who started rebirth has more or less jumped ship to the movies.

Except Honor Guard aren't actually higher ranked then Sector Lanterns.

The difference is that they have authority in all sectors instead of just the sector they are assigned to.

So technically speaking Paul has equal authority to the Sisters.
wut? paul is the Illustres, not an honour guard I said that that (honour guard) was the highest rank the sisters could have.
And the honour guard act as NCO's in combat.

You do realize in the best case of that actually working like you suggest, it would be quickly followed by the Silver City coming down and murdering them all for stealing a soul from their care? o_O

You do realize A. Grayven doesn't give a fuck, and would probably rejoice at all the free angel stuff he gets from theirs corpses. B. If it's coming from the Source (like they mentioned it was) they're literally incapable of questioning it and C. Is it true you're just angry because you want to bang Paul and Zoat is forever out of your reach?

No, but being related to the Pope does.

No it doesn't. Not even the most hardcore of Catholics would contend that mere blood relation to a Pope has any bearing on whether or not you get into Heaven, and Jesus himself said that not all Christians will make it. She could very easily be in Hell.

Which....several hundred years in Hell....that's perhaps not a soul you want to bring back.

You do realize A. Grayven doesn't give a fuck, and would probably rejoice at all the free angel stuff he gets from theirs corpses.

I dunno. ParaPaul got curb stomped by angels. Gravyen's stronger, but not THAT much stronger.

Can- can he even get it back to his universe? 0_o A ship is quite a bit larger than what we've previously seen dimension hop.

I believe it was mentioned that his version of the dimension hopper uses a boom tube for increased efficiency... and that the battleship was capable of creating boom tubes for both it and it's support fleet.

Who cares? Sure, he'd like to take it back with him, but the Justice Lords need a new home. And he can study the technology inside. Desaad wasn't all that interested in things that couldn't scream.

Being the Pope's daughter sired out of wedlock while he was Pope probably doesn't help.

Grayven probably wouldn't have the entire Host arrayed against him. He could take a single chorus.

Really, the main problem I see is that she might already be a demon, or just destroyed by hell, and any type of soul resurrection is too late.

Not unbelievable, mind you. It's more unbelievable that no one else can. Come on people, it's just a bunch of wet nanotech. Lots of people use dry nanotech, and they had to design that from scratch. You can figure out how to put together some wet nano.

You need to know what you are doing, that means having medical knowledge of the human body or whatever alien you are fixing.

Self healing? The ring AI helps a lot, so us way easier.

Healing others? Not so easy.

They talked more about ship-sized boom tubes in the episode Excavation. Boom tube power requirements scale with size, and the Renegade straight up didn't have a power source good enough to make ship-sized boom tubes in that episode, which was less than two months ago in story. It's been mentioned that a parallel universe traveling boom tube takes a lot of energy too. So, combine the power requirements of a ship sized boom tube with a parallel universe traveling one, and it's probably not in the cards.

Or they could just use the solution they used in that episode, which was to use magic portals instead.

Yes, though it depends on how little you're working from. Whatever is doing the fixing needs to know what it's doing, and extrapolating a body from bones and nothing else would be substantially more difficult than fixing minor injuries. But the latter, and maybe even the former, is nothing that a high-tech expert system couldn't handle. And a power ring is that and then some.
