With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

In a comic book, usually when this many Z-listers get gathered up in a group to go on a mission with the main character, it's so they can all get slaughtered in entertaining ways.

Heh-heh-heh-heh. And a crew that more has it coming I can't imagine. (I actually wouldn't put it past The Bat to do it on purpose, which is to say deliberately bringing along some problem children he's had difficulty controlling so they can 'heroically' die on a mission to another world, so sad.)

True, It's usually done as a way to show how dangerous the situation is by having some characters die in it, but the characters are fairly minor so you don't risk the readers quitting because you killed their favorite character.

And I doubt these guys are anyone's favorites.

Plus it could be a way to gather data on how dangerous the other side is.

Thank you, corrected.

When the ACTUAL NAZIS think you're a bunch of out-there weirdos, it's time to reconsider your life.

After the war, a puppet government was set up with American colaborators. The problem was that Nazi Germany was overstretched. They had the tecnology to defeat anyone, but they didn't have the manpower to occupy the whole world. This left the puppets without much support, and eventually things... Shifted. Full Federal democracy was sort of restored, with the frontrunner being a party that was heavily involved in the most racist areas of the country before the war and indeed once fought a civil war in defence of slavery.

Um.

[Looks nervously at the moderators]

I fully accept that people and organisations can change, and that it isn't fair to judge a group that exists now by the behaviour of their distant predecessors. But I'm going to avoid naming them anyway.
I'm gonna guess that the American Nazi Party is probably also one of the major political parties, George Lincoln Rockwell was never assassinated by a former ANP member like he was in the OTL, and he probably got elected President at some point?

Atom Man takes a moment to look down at the state of central Europe.

"It's strange. I've never thought what it would be like if Overman turned his wrath on us."

"Your suit has kryptonite lasers."

"Yes. But that was to prepare for a theoretical risk. Seeing it in person is different."

"You could treat this as a trial run. If you can kill an Overman fortified by magic, you can probably beat the actual one."

"Yes, I just… It's Overman. The idea that anyone could beat him-."

"It can be done." Diana's voice has a hard edge to it. "It has been done before and it will be done again."

"I've got some gold kryptonite if you can switch the crystal?"

"That is not possible. We-."

Alert! Incoming-.

A roar of displaced air hurricanes past us, and then Overman, Superman and Angelika are-

"Angelika!"

-there, Baroness Reiter flying over at high speed to embrace her friend. Angelika enthusiastically returns her affection, pulling her into her chest with a smile.

"Gisela!"

Overman smiles in a slightly strained manner as he floats down towards the ground bound members of Axis Germania.

"Gentlemen. Ladies. Brothers and sisters in arms. Thank you for coming."

The Bat smiles. "Overman. I assumed that you would survive, but it is reassuring to see it directly."

Overgirl and the Baroness drift down towards Ms. Brauer, while Diana flies towards Superman. He proffers the spear.

"Can you do anything with this?"

She watches him for a few moments, studying his face-.

Superman shakes his head. "I'mSorry, I'm not him."

"No. But it's nice to be reminded of what he was, before…" She glances around. "This. I can't do anything with the Spear, but we're hoping that the Crusader can."

"I don't know if I like handing this over to a Nazi."

"No." She shakes her head. "Crusader is from this Earth. He's not a Nazi. He's just a devout Catholic who made an unfortunate choice with his name."

"Oh." Superman nods. "That's a little more reassuring. Who's in charge here?"

Overman raises his right arm to beckon Superman and Diana down. Superman nods, and the pair of them join him and The Bat for a discussion.

Didn't see much of Central Germany the first time. I don't know if Demon Superman bothered converting local superheroes. Actually, I've been assuming that was him, but actually it might just as well have been Wolf Krieger who did it. That could mean that the problem will resolve itself in short order, which would be nice.

Except that it might just make it easier for Truggs to loot the place, since he wouldn't have to worry about Demon Superman taking exception, or any of the other demonically-twisted crazies. Is that something he'd-? Yes, yes it is. Sic the superheroes on the problem, take advantage when everyone relaxes. But there's not much-.

Bats swarm in the sky to my left, eventually resolving into Count Berlin. He makes sure that he has my attention for a moment and then points eastward.

"There. Lantern. Can you see?"

I scan in that direction. "Looks like a refugee caravan. Or it could just be a caravan. Given all the changes to the atmosphere, farming has become quite difficult."

"No. The smell is wrong."

"How so?"

"Like another vampire, but… Different."

"I say ag-."

"I do not meet other vampires frequently. Only a few times. I have little to compare it to, but it's… Off."

"Orange Lantern to everyone. We might have a dozen or so vampires of indeterminate power heading this way."

"Count Berlin." Overman looks around, his eyes pointing in the direction they're coming from. "Take Orange Lantern and speak with them. We have no interest in fighting them, but will do so if necessary."

"Yes, Overman." He doesn't bother looking at me, instead heading towards their current location at moderate speed.

I fly alongside him.

"How does the Reich treat vampires generally?"

"They are exterminated. I was exempted due to my war record and loyal service." His eyes narrow slightly as our target gets into visual range. "But we are not here to destroy subhumans. Just to end a threat to the Reich."

"A valiant sacrifice on your part?"

"I will not talk about it with you."

He swoops down, and I hang back slightly to offer support without crowding some refugees. In densely populated cities vampires can make arrangements for blood. Heck, it wouldn't be hard for me to set up a synthetic blood still for them. Ms. Barr has been living off it for over a year at this point.

One of the vampires pulls his horse to a stop and waves.

"Hello, cousin!"

"State your business. We're busy."

"We're here to feed on the surviving humans of Germany, of course! Pickings are getting rather thin out east."

"You are from Russia?"

"From Markovia."

"Then return to there. Germany is not for you."

The other man looks mildly affronted. "You're claiming all of Germany as your feeding ground?"

"I'm claiming all of Germany as my Fatherland. Is your night vision so bad that you cannot see the swastika?"

The Markovian vampire looks puzzled.

"You're actually a Nazi? I thought it was just for decoration."

"I am a proud National Socialist and a loyal son of the Fatherland."

"Then perhaps you should be concerned to know that I have left followers in every town that I have passed. They are ordered to send a supply of blood to sustain us… But they can be ordered to-"

Time for Paul to show off a little for the arrogant and ignorant Nazis. Hopefully a demonstration of what he can do will get them to think twice about any potential ideas of betrayal or multiversal invasion. I'm sure at least some of the idiots that they have are thinking of it.

Be glad he's not of a mind to. That is a truly compassionate man, under the National Socialism crap he was raised on. It's a pity we usually only see alternates like him during Crises or as villains in crossovers. Then again... He is still a Nazi, as disillusioned as he is with the ideals...

"Your suit has kryptonite lasers."

"Yes. But that was to prepare for a theoretical risk. Seeing it in person is different."
Good to see someone in the Nazi leadership was properly paranoid. Unlike most of them, who were just irrationally paranoid.

"You could treat this as a trial run. If you can kill a Overman fortified by magic, you can probably beat the actual one."

"Yes, I just… It's Overman. The idea that anyone could beat him-."
Heh. I suspect that reputation will come into play if or when Karl wants to try and reform the party line.

"It can be done." Diana's voice has a hard edge to it. "It has been done before and it will be done again."

"I've got some gold kryptonite if you can switch the crystal?"
Then again, you might need to tweak it for the local variant. Only problem is, this one won't give you time for a second try.

"That is not possible. We-."

Alert! Incoming-.
What's impossible? That there can be different colours of Kryptonite, or the possibility of reconfiguring the guns? On the latter, I'm guessing they're not really designed to be user-servicable.

A roar of displaced air hurricanes past us, and then Overman, Superman and Angelika are-

"Angelika!"
Hmm... How long has it been since they've seen her in-universe, again? Months?

-there, Baroness Reiter flying over at high speed to embrace her friend. Angelika enthusiastically returns her affection, pulling her into her chest with a smile.

"Gisela!"
x3 Aw, it's almost sweet enough to make you forget the racism...

Overman smiles in a slightly strained manner as he floats down towards the ground bound members of Axis Germania.

"Gentlemen. Ladies. Brothers and sisters in arms. Thank you for coming."
At least he can manage to put on a brave face, no matter how he feels.

The Bat smiles. "Overman. I assumed that you would survive, but it is reassuring to see it directly."

Overgirl and the Baroness drift down towards Ms. Brauer, while Diana flies towards Superman. He proffers the spear.
Right, let the ladies catch up. On to other business, then.

"Can you do anything with this?"

She watches him for a few moments, studying his face-.
It'd be interesting to see a comparison between the two Supermen. Outside of obvious things like artstyles, there's bound to be subtle differences in their face, their voice...

Superman shakes his head. "I'mSorry, I'm not him."

"No. But it's nice to be reminded of what he was, before…" She glances around. "This. I can't do anything with the Spear, but we're hoping that the Crusader can."
And boy, is that an awkward choice of name around here.

"I don't know if I like handing this over to a Nazi."

"No." She shakes her head. "Crusader is from this Earth. He's not a Nazi. He just a devout Catholic who made an unfortunate choice with his name."
Heck, he started out as 'Kid Crusader' in the Teen Titans' comics (The Noughties one, not the Eighties'.)

"Oh." Superman nods. "That's a little more reassuring. Who's in charge here?"

Overman raises his right arm to beckon Superman and Diana down. Superman nods, and the pair of them join him and The Bat for a discussion.
Probably best to let the oldest capes here handle that. ...And now I find myself picturing Herr Fledermaus as Old Bruce Wayne.

To be fair, the original story never elaborated much on the whole setting, beyond 'A Kryptonian Demon made him do it'...

Bats swarm in the sky to my left, eventually resolving into Count Berlin. He makes sure that he has my attention for a moment and then point eastward.

"There. Lantern. Can you see?"
Something noteworthy? Something other than lurking refugees or cultists?

I scan in that direction. "Looks like a refugee caravan. Or it could just be a caravan. Given all the changes to the atmosphere, farming has become quite difficult."

"No. The smell is wrong."
...Well, then. Because of course some clever spod devised a super-power formula that made vampires.

"How so?"

"Like another vampire, but… Different."
Less 'rotting corpse' scent? I mean, I'm sure they look hale and hearty when they're well-fed, but there'd still be something to upset animals... Especially if you go by Bram Stoker's Dracula?

"I say ag-."

"I do not meet other vampires frequently. Only a few times. I have little to compare it to, but it's… Off."
I suspect such meetings are always tense affairs, like two predators sniffing each other looking for a threat.

"Orange Lantern to everyone. We might have a dozen or so vampire of indeterminate power heading this way."

"Count Berlin." Overman looks around, his eyes pointing in the direction they're coming from. "Take Orange Lantern and speak with them. We have no interest in fighting them, but will do so if necessary."
And with three Kryptonians, two of which willing to use lethal force and the third probably not entirely broken of that habit against non-humans, It would be a short fight.

"Yes, Overman." He doesn't bother looking at me, instead heading towards their current location at moderate speed.

I fly alongside him.
Well, this is a curious combination... What to ask first, eh, OL?

"How does the Reich treat vampires generally?"

"They are exterminated. I was exempted due to my war record and loyal service." His eyes narrow slightly as our target gets into visual range. "But we are not here to destroy subhumans. Just to end a threat to the Reich."
Let me guess, you get your blood supply from convicted criminals?

"A valiant sacrifice on your part?"

"I will not talk about it with you."
Oof, seems like there's some sour grapes there. Knowing that he's only alive because he was useful... Probably seen as something of a sideshow freak by some...

Burly fellow, isn't he? Such a 90's look to his outfit. Hopefully he's sensibly dressed here...

"Hello, cousin!"

"State your business. We're busy."
Such a jovial greeting. Surely he's not here for any untoward reasons...

"We're here to feed on the surviving humans of Germany, of course! Pickings are getting rather thin out east."

"You are from Russia?"
Oof, two strikes in one statement. Yeah, i don't think he's going to be walking away from this in one piece...

"From Markovia."

"Then return to there. Germany is not for you."
Patriotic, even if it isn't your home universe, eh, Baron? That speaks well of you.

The other man looks mildly affronted. "You're claiming all of Germany as your feeding ground?"

"I'm claiming all of Germany as my Fatherland. Is your night vision so bad that you cannot see the swastika?"
...Oh, yeah, Nazi. Just when I want to like him...

The Markovan vampire looks puzzled.

"You're actually a Nazi? I thought it was just for decoration."

"I am a proud National Socialist and a loyal son of the Fatherland."
And Roderick is starting to realise he's just stepped into something nasty, hasn't he?

"Then perhaps you should be concerned to know that I have left followers in every town that I have passed. They are ordered to send a supply of blood to sustain us… But they can easily be ordered to-"

Ring, scan likely route of travel, towns and other settlements they might have encountered. Locate animate humanoids without heartbeats.
Well, thanks for telling them that, because...

Located.

"-kill everyone just as easily-"
...Now you don't.

And if Superman complains, just tell him 'imminent threat of mass murder by vampires'.

I bet the eastern horizon there is about to turn rather orange very soon. :D And Axis Germanica will get a little more idea of what a real Lantern can achieve when he's motivated. It's been a while since OL really opened up on that front, hasn't it? A pity this is only really a distraction from the main mission. And the sooner they sort out Demon-Superman, the better...

Y'know for all the hesitation about working with nazis Paul is awfully quick off the mark to purge a bunch of 'subhumans' for one of them.
1. He hasn't purged anyone yet and he has a range of non-lethal ways to deal with people.
2. He is, prompted by the threat from the new vampire they were talking with, acting to stop others from dying. He's not doing it because he suddenly thinks Count Berlin matters.

A post-apocalypse band of roving marauders, vampire or no, are not that much better than nazis, maybe even worse. At least most nazis have loyalty to their country or family, while these guys have no problems killing and raping everything. Also, in a post-apocalypse world, vampires are a threat to all of humanity, depending on the quantity of blood they need.

Let me guess, you get your blood supply from convicted criminals?

Or they can synthesize blood for him or it's donated.

He might also just subsist on animal blood.

Such a jovial greeting. Surely he's not here for any untoward reasons...

Of course!

I mean when you see a vampire walking around in a post-apocalyptic world you're immediately suspicious, but that doesn't mean they're doing something bad.

But everyone's fucked anyway until they deal with demon superman.

Should one roving gang of vampires really be his priority right now?

I mean sure even count berlin has proven he is loyal to other versions of his country.

Vampire's while a threat to all humanity are probably less of a threat than the mass demon corruption.

I doubt it, these guys were smart enough to arrange for a tithe of blood to feed their vampire warrior caravan as they move on a new area. So it's unlikely they are running around killing people for shits and giggles. Then again it depends on how often they have to fight demon cultists humans.

I am going to call a continuity error in here Mr Zoat Morgana already established that all humans (probably some aliens too if Kara is representative) without protection have their soul infused with demon magic constantly and that humans can only live without becoming crazy demon cultists under the aegis/protection of a greater entity. This being why all the humans in Britain have to live inside/around the castles she and her fae troops maintain.

This is supported by the bird guys that initially attacked the group when they were getting vision blasted by demon Superman.

Germany shouldn't have ANY baseline humans civilians, it either has crazy demon cultists or they are protected by an entity similar to Morgan and her Fae, or the God of the Hawk people. Thus the latest update doesn't really make sense.

Either the Vampires are hunting demon cultists humans thus not really civilians, they are hunting humans under the protection of at least a lesser god or these humans remain non corrupted BECAUSE of the Vampires and their magic and Paul is jumping the gun.

But everyone's fucked anyway until they deal with demon superman.

Should one roving gang of vampires really be his priority right now?

Why shouldn't he stop them?

It's not like they're an actual threat to him and he can easily track them down very quickly so he's neither risking his time or his life.

Vampire's while a threat to all humanity are probably less of a threat than the mass demon corruption

They're also fairly easy to get rid of, while the demon corruption may be much, much more difficult to get rid of.

God of the Hawk people.

I think it was implied that those bird people were worshipping Trigon, seeing as they came from a place where the Church of Blood came from and Mirgan mentioning something far darker than a demon Superman.

And I don't think there's a continuity error here.

It's possible that Morgan wasn't fully correct and there may be places where humans aren't corrupted, she just doesn't know about them and may not be able to check.

If Paragon asked about the Lasso, I feel like he should have asked about the Helm of Fate on Nazi-Earth. I think his actions looking for him show that he's willing to recruit him for a mission like this, though besides possibly Crusader I can't think of any compatible hosts in personality or magic affinity.

I'm still a bit confused why they don't just head back to Earth-16ZP to pick up another Diana and maybe Teth Adom and others. Now that they have the Demon-Earth Spear (I forget if they looked for the Nazi-Earth Spear or not), I think they have a bit more breathing room.

It's 100% a continuity error.

"None of the people I have seen here have the demonic presence of those bound to Demon Superman's service. The wide jaw, the fixation on his crest… They do not have it. Who are your people? What makes them immune?"

"These?" Morgan glances at the closest guard. "These are hobgoblins. They are partly of Earth and partially of the Fae. Demon magic does not capture their minds so easily as it does mortal men."

"And your human subjects?"

"They remain either in my realm of Camelot or in shielded fortresses. The greater part of the countryside is overtaken by those devoted to him."

"You are evacuating to Camelot?"

"When possible. There are few stable gateways and fewer magicians of sufficient power to shield them while they move. And my armies are not large enough to defend the entire realm."

"Is it impossible for you to remove the demonic presence from those infected with it?"

"It's impractical. The process requires me to pull a form of magic energy out of someone in an environment that is full of it. It's like bailing out a boat that is already underwater!"

Normal humans cannot exist in this earth for long, they will get corrupted.

They need to be under literally lock and key in a different Astral plane, under the protection of magical defenses, or under the aegis of a God or powerful magic user.

There cannot be free range civilians in the ruins of Germany.

Either they are wild humans corrupted by the demon magic, or they are under protection of powerful fae creatures, gods or magic users. There is no alternative.

In short the Vampires cannot be preying on hapless civilians, they are preying on crazed corrupted humans or getting in the turf of something powerful enough to shield them from the corruption.

When Paul told Overgirl about it, she was surprised to learn that Krieger really had the Spear of Destiny, so it is most likely lost.

Maybe some parts of the world aren't as corrupted as other parts and civilians can exist there.
