With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

So... what is Whaler's power? Is he white enlightened or something? Did he somehow get a part of Ion and is called the Whaler because of that? Why can he use constructs, and why does his face have white lines?

i'm betting on him being a Proto-White Light user

With green, you can't be fancy because you have to focus on pushing every inch of the way. On the plus side, green can't do anything by accident, and can be aimed in any direction.
The other colors are "pushed" by the users "emotions" to a greater or lesser degree, which makes them easier to use, but limits you to certain directions.
White is broken as hell because you can pick whichever part of the spectrum is pushing in the direction you want to go at the moment.

I understand that according to JLA/JSA Secret Files his powers come from the Aurora Borealis and his tribe comes from the land bridge between Asia and North America, but his origins were never explored in his appearances.

And the only colors I remember his constructs being were green, which is rather odd for his supposed origin.

Unless he was supposed to be a part of like a sentai team-pink, green, yellow, blue, violet, orange and white.

I have unyielding hatred for what is often called a "crack-fic"

I.E Stupid, goofy shit.

Fuck consistency of character/plot/writing. Fuck continuity. Fuck all that because it's so wacky and funny!

That's what I tend to encounter as the "fun" in comics. I've laughed harder at humor in a drama work, then I ever have from a sitcom.

For the second half, I find "Here intelligence and willingness to listen have made dire situations turn into peaceful ones." to be very close to pasifistic nonsense. Which, in fictional form, drives me up the god damn wall. But I prefer to be jovial about it and I couldn't find a good hiss video that the site would actually allow...because it hates me.

Also, "And then they sat down and talked through their problems." Is not a satisfying conclusion that I would pay money for.

But I bet you understood the sound when I said Vampire hiss.

that actually makes me think of Dying light (videogame) a little- when the script wants to, its fucking HILERIOUS, but it hits so hard partly because its serious the majority of the time, and the writers knew when to use levity without ruining immersion/the setting, instead of going full-on-cartoonishly-goofy the entire time.

There will be a random Malvolio that appears to wreck some shit!
Will our intrepid lantern trio be able to stop this font of willpower and evil?????

What's wrong with admitting that most of your information is from extra-dimensional (or possibly "extra-universal") sources that may or may not be accurate locally? Paul has been known to be outside his current universe at least a couple of times by now, so that should be enough truth in a misleading enough manner to not reveal things he doesn't want to reveal.

Paul has been known to be outside his current universe at least a couple of times by now, so that should be enough truth in a misleading enough manner to not reveal things he doesn't want to reveal.

i mean, the way i see it, in a setting like this, there -is- no "real" world-
it'd be perfictly reasonable for their to be projections/infomation leakage between worldlines fairly frequently- a "mutually fictional" type thing-
there's allready arguably a precident with Earth Prime and all- when whiny-little-up-himself-bitch-Prime went psychotic, it leaked into the "real" comics, and his friends/family essetially disowned him for being a genocidal lunatic-
i dont really think the reveal would REALLY be THAT traumatic if presented through the lens of "yes, your world is fictional where i came from- if you went through enough bookshops, there's a very high chance mine is here!"

Personality I am more interested on the conversation Guy will have about Nekkron and the black light. Paul probably doesn't remember he name dropped that during combat, but the Guardians probably do, and since their first attempt to get information on that failed (when Paul went to Oa), I wouldn't be surprised if they tell information to Guy to see if he can get Paul talking.

I am sure the Guardians must be almost shitting bricks by now, in less than two years they have got confirmation of the compassion corps being active for a while, the greed ones are finally a proper lantern core, the love ones are very close (probably being helped along after the guardians/controllers discovered the anti-monitor armor piece), the hope has a powerful user (and Ganted (sp) will probably complete his project now that he knows they failed to erase the anti-monitor) and Siniestro of the fear has been awfully quiet these past few months... As far as they know only the light of rage lacks a lantern core or a powerful user and the black light is already active in the planet they decided to hide/stash the life embodiment.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Hope lantern Paul respects, shows up on earth in a couple of months to meet his senpai Alan, leading to the team mentioning how Paul respected him as a light user and everyone picking up on the issue that he is a new lantern that Paul knew ahead of time.

I would have already used the Ophidian as explanation. I mean, who can account for all the random little things that the Ophidian and Paul did together with their level of power? They probably only noticed the major things and Paul doesn't remember every little thing until some context allows him (like seeing everyone, everywhere, from every angle, naked at least once), so who says if one of those random things wasn't investigating stuff on Earth or random 'True Sight' across the galaxy or watching ancient and significant (conveniently comic book relevant) events from their mark in the Honden of Avarice? The only one that could say that's a lie is the Ophidian... and I don't think she will tell.

At this point he may need to commit, get a good enough lie they can't catch (he can just say he has the information but can't precisely say from which one unique source he got it and use the Ophidian as possible explanation, which is still misdirection and not literally lying) or just own up to it and say he got it from his universe (say like, there's some documented and illustrated stories from his universe that seem to explore other adjacent or random universes, some of which seem to bear remarkable similarities with this universe but not complete parity and Hinon believes my world's version of 'Metahumans' just have a high sensitivity through the Bleed to witness, although not perfectly, events from other universes; again not a lie but sounds with more gravitas than just... graphic novels or comic books).

I can see some sense in not telling Guy. Letting him know that not only is he a fictional character, but is also not very well thought of, has been used in some very cringey ways over the years, and is regularly pushed aside for Hal might just negatively affect his sense of self. Which in turn would greatly weaken him.

Just a thought.

as a counterpoint, you could reinforce how he's... well, not the Guy OL read about- he's a person, not a punchline or 2D comic relief- he's highly compitent, Driven, and geninely dedicated AND successful at
improving society past rightous face-punching in his other job in a way few powered individuals manage,as well as being a genuinely talented Lantern who's arguably the most skilled of the Earther lanterns at this point, to the point of innovating a hard-counter technique to Assimilation entirely on his own- focus on pointing out all the ways the "leaked" infomation/stories isnt entirely accurate past the basics- after all, in the DC canon i remember, we're just in another paralel ourselves....

though i fully agree that any such reveal WOULD be inherently risky given the nature of his power source- i just feel... well...
look at where dodging the truth got Renpaul as of now, twice over (relationship AND AL exposure)...

also, on the practical level, a handful of people (who dont have John Constantine's LITERALLY supernaturally bad luck) to compare notes with could be genuinely useful to fact- check his database

Earth 12
16th January 2005

02:38 GMT, apparently

I blink owlishly at my bedside clock, and for a moment try to remember exactly when I got my first clock radio back on Earth Prime. The one before that had a horrible beeper and I was glad to see the back of it. Behind me, Barbara wriggles and starts sleep-grooming my back, purring throatily as she does it. Which is a bit weird, but people in a relationship make allowances for one another and this is far preferable to the sleep-chew she gave me the first time we slept together, which resulted in a trip to casualty.

Why am I awake?

Yesterday… Not a lot happened. I had to have a chat with Lenny about him skipping his therapy sessions and he accused me of giving him mixed messages by inviting him to a supervillain team up and then blue-balling him, but I'm… Reasonably confident that he was joking. Jan Gisler's retirement party is in a few weeks and as an important client I've been invited to that

No, not coming up with anything. Turn around, nuzzle Barbara and then go back to sleep? Sounds like a plan. Just check-.

My eyes widen and Barbara's left licking a hole in the bed sheet as I climb out of bed at speed, swiftly entering the code for the bedroom safe and taking out the cosmic baton Ted gave me 'for personal protection'. Force field on button three. Then I head towards my home office and my document safe. Someone's touching the ring. I don't exactly know how much harm a near-dead ring can cause but I'm not interested in finding out. Baton in my right hand and pointed forward I shove the door open with my left and hit the light switch.

Batman glances at me, then returns his attention to the orange power ring in his right hand.

"Fascinating. I didn't know they came in this color."

"Put it down, Mister Wayne. Put it down now."

"How did you get it?"

"Is it whispering to you, Mister Wayne? Is it offering you everything you've ever wanted? Because that's what it does. It tells you that you can do anything with it. Please, put it down."

He places it down on the mantelpiece, and I take a moment to-.

"You need a better safe."

"Ninety nine percent of people who might try and rob my safe would just blast it open. I put the ring in my office safe in the hope that they'll assume all that's in there is paperwork."

"How did you get a power ring?"

"Why are you in my house? I don't know what arrangement you have with the Gotham police, but I'm fairly sure you don't have any right to be here."

"Your citizenship application states that you had it in your possession when you arrived."

"Mister Wayne, I'm pretty sure I couldn't beat you in a fist fight but I'm pretty sure I could shoot you through a wall with this on wide beam."

"Peter Wynne, thirty eight years of age. Appeared out of thin air from a parallel universe nine years ago. You claimed to have no idea how it happened."

"And I didn't. Still don't. Look, has one of my employees had a relapse? Is that why you're hassling me?"

"We're speaking because I recently had an encounter with two versions of you from another dimension."

"Do you mean 'parallel universe', or were they really six dimensional?"

"I thought that their voices sounded familiar, but it took me some time to remember where I'd heard them before. May twenty ninth, last year. A phone call was made to my home number. The caller offered to deploy a nuclear device at the Thanagarian construction site in Libya."

An event I haven't spoken about with my Thanagarian employees. Quite a lot didn't make it back to the Command Carrier when their commander ordered a pull out, and while they've mostly been released by the various governments that were holding them as prisoners of war they're obviously not exactly popular due to the whole 'trying to blow up the planet' thing.

"Yes, and Mister Pennyworth politely pretended that he had no idea who you were as I got steadily more frantic, and that's why virtually all of the ring charge I was keeping for emergencies is now gone. I was sitting at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea for hours waiting for someone to contact me, so with the Justice League expanding you might want to work on your coordination a little."

"You know who I am and where I live, and you've done so for years."

"My home parallel doesn't have superheroes. I put the ring on and asked: 'who are these costumed lunatics?'. But given that you're doing good work there's nothing I wanted to do with the information. Although I'm seriously thinking about using it in order to serve you for this."

"What do you intend to do with all of the criminals in your employ?"

"So I remember hearing about a case where Mister Cobblepot was released on licence, then returned to prison after helping some of his former employees find legitimate employment contrary to the terms of his parole. And I seem to remember hearing that you protested both the release and the return to prison." I shrug. "What I'm doing is giving them an avenue to use their abilities for the good of mankind, and to benefit themselves. Without doing anything illegal."

"Except when they turn on you."

"That happened with two out of… Eighty? Both times I was rescued by other employees and I'm pretty sure that one was a LexCorp plant. Supervillains… It's an ingroup-outgroup differentiation thing. Once they categorise you as one of theirs, as being on their side, the.. sane ones are usually alright. You just can't trust them to follow abstract rules."

"Oh, is that what this is." Barbara pads in behind me. "You're my ingroup."

She folds her arms across her chest, putting her weight on her right hip as her tail whips back and forth.

I sigh. "Batman, is there any chance of you leaving?"

"I still need-."

I walk up to Barbara, wrap my arms around her shoulders and curl my hands upwards so that I can stroke her head around her ears. She relaxes slightly as I lean closer, gently kissing her muzzle.

"You're the group I love being in most of all."

I rub a little harder, and she isn't quite able to prevent her eyes closing slightly in pleasure as I continue to kiss her. We've learned that tongues are a bad idea with her teeth and papillae, but her lips are still sensitive enough to enjoy this sort of contact. I press against her-.

"He's gone."

I maintain the pressure on her head. "What, you want me to stop?"

"Nrugh, I need to get up tomorrow."

I pull my face away from hers slightly, my pyjama-clad chest still pressing against her fur-covered breasts and my fingers still kneading her head.

"What did Batman even want?"

"It sounded like he had a run-in with a parallel universe version of me. And in case you're wondering, no, this isn't a sign that I'm secretly planning on picking a fight with the Justice League."

"Goodnrughuhuhuh." She tilts her head back, pressing harder against my hands, her tail wrapping itself around my waist.

"Oh, and I'm assuming that you heard me refer to him by name?"

"I know, don't tell anyone." She shakes her head, pulling her ears out of my grip for a moment. "I have to ask. Could your power ring..? Fix me?"

"Assuming that you'll simply dismiss my claim that there's nothing to fix-."

She pulls further away, looking into the mirror suspended over the mantelpiece.

"This isn't-. Me. I know you don't care-."

I walk up behind her and wrap my arms around her. "This is the only 'you' I've ever known. But in answer to your question… Maybe. It might also have driven you insane, torn you apart because it ran out of power half way through, called the universe's other insane and horrendously powerful Orange Lantern here from Okaara, or… Any number of other things."

I crane my head down and nibble at her neck for a few moments, until I feel her tail wrap around me again.

"It wouldn't be a safe or reliable fix, Barbara. And I love you just the way you are."

She leans her head against me. "Okay. Let's go back to bed. But if Wonder Woman's in there, I'm going to want a better explanation."

I'm enjoying this new story-line. I hope you'll keep writing this.

I shake my head and I take the… Hm. Hinon should qualify as an OAP, shouldn't she? Take the fifteen pounds and eighty pence out of subspace and slide it under the window. "Feel free to report it. Our visit isn't a secret."
...Doesn't Paul still have his problem with fiat currency that means that his contempt of the whole thing makes him unable to use it? I think you meant to have him just give a coin, though I understand the desire for the joke.

He lost that problem quite a while ago, when he became enlightened.

Yes, but the more exotic the less precise the communication, and some concepts fail completely.

Because he believes that the green mindset is limiting in some ways, and that there is benefit to having individuals with a different way of looking at things around.

Due to how focusing willpower works, it is very difficult for Green Lanterns to build things.

i remember from ages back, OL commented on the other Earther Lanterns and their constructs-i cant clearly remember who's it was- it was a situation that had almost everyone in the field/using their rings at once, and he was thinking/comparing their styles internally-it might have been a sparring match, or...
but theirs (i think either Jon or Alan) stood out because..well..they were more REAL, detailed-nuts, bolts and (assumedly)welds- replicas of/actual objects formed out of the green light instead of just the form- it did a really god job of subtly emphasizing how hard/unusual it is to "REALLY" make something with a bobblehead ring, instead of a rough aproximation...

like...say a lawnmower- most who could project one, there'd be the shell, and blades-but they're be sepereate/unconnected, floating in space...

In the comics I remember, Kyle builds by making construct cranes and diggers and having them do the work of regular cranes and diggers. He didn't literally make things until he started turning into Ion.

While all the things he makes are just constructs; read DC One Million and one of the crossovers with the Avengers to see the stuff he can make.

A perfect replica of Iron Man armor? No problem!

.Holding an explosion that might wipe a whole Galaxy? He needs help but still can hold it in his own for a minute or two.

Aren't those sort of considered non-canon? DC One Million is definetely not a good approximation of his actual current powers, since all current heroes are more powerful there, and the Avengers comics do some weird things to make pairs of characters nearly equivalent in power.

I would like to know if the robot chicken DC universe will ever show up. They are quite funny.

That was John Stewart. In theory he does it in the comics as well. In practice, it was mentioned once and then forgotten.

Kyle power levels(and powers) keep changing but if he wants something canon, he was able to fight Parallax away with just a bit of help. And I meant the fear entity.

Depends on which crossover you're talking about. If it's JL/Avengers, then no, it's still canon, even despite flashpoint.

Krona was trapped in a universe egg at the end of that crossover.

That universe was shown to have hatched in Trinity, where Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman replaced Krona as the gods of that universe.

That universe is now Earth-1 of the post flashpoint multiverse.

So that universe is the setting of Superman: Earth-One, Batman: Earth-One, Teen Titans: Earth-One, Wonder Woman: Earth-One, and Green Lantern: Earth-One.

Because then he would have to admit there's a very good chance his information isn't accurate.

And he value's his "all knowing" reputation too much for that.
He knew the secret identities of the entire Justice League, and a huge number of other heros and villains, to a high degree of accuracy. Certainly the Justice League was something like 100% accurate.
He isn't familiar with the exact universe, but he's accurately predicted many plotlines, backstories, ex-cetera.
He was basically fully aware of the general state of Vega, with enough detail in some cases to know where, specifically, to find several different people. One of which was hidden behind a false wall deep inside a heavily secured prison.

I'd say that there's a very good chance that his information is accurate.

The real problem would be if he brought up Guy's Warrior phase. That was... Really something.

And even if Walker's ring has the malware, Being near Alan's green light soul would unlock it.
